Michelle Obama's long journey to the White House is a story spanning five generationsFormer First Lady Michelle Obama's family sure has come a long way in five generations. American filmmaker and Selma director Ava DuVernay shared a compelling tweet paying tribute to the former First Lady's great-great-great grandmother, Melvinia "Mattie" Shields McGruder, who was born a slave in South Carolina in 1844. The inscription on the tombstone states that, at age six, Mattie was brought to the Shields farm, located in what is now the community of Rex, in Georgia's Clayton County.  Decades later, Mattie's great-great-great granddaughter, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, not only went to Princeton University but also earned her law degree from Harvard University before going on to become the 44th First Lady of the United States of America. Graffiti on stop signs could trick driverless cars into driving dangerously

Posted: 07 Aug 2017 02:55 AM PDT

Graffiti on stop signs could trick driverless cars into driving dangerouslyDriverless cars could ignore road signs on the streets since they can be confused by simple vandalism, researchers have found. While carmakers have been investigating ways to protect autonomous cars against hackers, more conventional attacks could confuse the vehicles into misreading road signs that would appear normal to ordinary drivers. Placing stickers or posters over part or the whole of a road sign could be used to trick the smart car into ignoring stop signs, even if visually they appear the same to the human drivers. Researchers at the University of Washington demonstrated how car hackers who had gained access to the visual recognition software within the vehicle could create simple alterations to road signs that would cause the car to misread them.  The researchers said changes that trick learning algorithms, such as those used in driverless cars, can cause them "to misbehave in unexpected and potentially dangerous ways." Stickers caused cars to read a stop sign as a speed limit sign Credit: University of Washington In one example, graffiti stickers were added to a stop sign that read "Love / Hate", which caused it to be misread as speed limit sign reading 45. In another trick, the researchers printed out a right-hand turn sign that looked almost identical to a legitimate one, but subtle colour changes caused the sign to be misinterpreted as a stop sign. "Both of our attack classes do not require special resources—only access to a colour printer and a camera," the researchers said. The team said they hoped the research could help build better defensive systems into autonomous vehicles. Although the turn right sign appears very similar the computer misread it Credit: University of Washington The dangers of such attacks could see cars driving straight through junctions or coming to a halt in the middle of the road. Some current cars are already equipped to read and detect signs, such as Tesla's Autopilot feature on its Model S electric cars, although the vehicles are not yet programmed to react to the signs. Threats to self-driving cars that would normally not affect human drivers have proved tricky for researchers to counter. Engineers at Volvo have been trying for two years to teach their cars how to avoid kangaroo collisions, while a team at Waymo was forced to develop a pair of tiny windscreen wipers to clean bird droppings that masked the cars cameras and LIDAR systems. This week the government announced new guidance to develop safer driverless cars. Transport minister Lord Callanan said: "We need to make sure that the designs of the vehicles in the first place are completely cyber secure so that people can't break into them, they can't steal them and more importantly they can't hack them to potentially cause accidents." Donald Trump thanked a black entrepreneur on Twitter, but she might not be real

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 12:40 PM PDT

Donald Trump thanked a black entrepreneur on Twitter, but she might not be realUPDATE: Aug. 6, 2017, 5:56 p.m. EDT A representative of heavy.com has contacted Mashable, explaining they have spoken with "the woman whose name was used to create multiple accounts connected to ProTrump45," who claims her identity has been stolen and plans to file a police report. Heavy's story has since been substantially altered, removing mentions of the real Mincy, who forcefully stated that she doesn't sell Trump merchandise or have anything to do with him. Further, Trump's earlier Twitter shout-out now points to the same tweet as before, but from a different account. This one belongs to @AlexandriaM0ra, and features the same profile photo as the earlier fake Mincey account. There's obviously more to this story than anyone knows right now. We'll  Original post follows: Sure, fake news runs rampant now more than ever—but don't let it distract you from another threat: fake Twitter accounts.  When Donald Trump tweeted his appreciation on Saturday to a "supporter" named Nicole Mincey/@protrump45, Twitter user @Rschooley debunked the account's identity, explaining in a thread exactly why "Nicole" and a variety of other Twitter users were in fact fakes, not actual Trump supporters.  Buckle up—this gets interesting.  SEE ALSO: Meet the Twitter bot that will give you all the Trump news you ever need So the person Trump retweeted today that's accused of being a bot. She joined Twitter in January, a full blown Trump believer. — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 Schooley shared an article from Heavy.com that lays out a vague backstory for Nicole: she's a hardworking student who grew up in poverty and went on to start a pro-Trump apparel company.  The Heavy article makes a case that Nicole is not the "bot" some have proclaimed her to be, pointing to social media accounts belonging to a woman named Ahyanah Nicole Mincy. It's worth noting that none of the publicly visible activity on those other accounts makes mention of Trump or the ProTrump45 business. Further, Schooley points out that all the information uncovered in that article come from another source, the Daily Caller, and that other article seems to have been provided to the site by Nicole herself.  I didn't see any real autobiographical details, such as college name or parents name. — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 We could find only one other instance of ProTrump45's Nicole Mincey appearing in the media, in an apparent interview with WorldNetDaily, a right-leaning news aggregator. Schooley doesn't discuss the WND story, but it's worth noting that the quotes attributed to Nicole are as vague about her life and background as they are in her Daily Caller story. The plot thickens even further here, as other, apparently fake Twitter users — all of which tweet each other — enter the picture.  Schooley found one account, allegedly belonging to Kendra Manning, that actively supports Nicole. Manning claims to be a woman who blogs at Buzzfeed — though she has no bylines on the site. Photos of her on the account are also suspicious: most — possibly all — seem to come from Placeit, a stock photo service that includes pictures of young people in blank shirts.  Just your typical young hipster Trump supporter. https://t.co/EyRTxxtfRk pic.twitter.com/KyCUHM67ap — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 Nicole also has a connection to Placeit. Her old, since-changed Twitter profile photo — which originally appeared (and still appears, as of this writing) in the Heavy story — was also from the stock image site. The woman in Heavy's header image (on the right in the tweet below) is just an extreme close-up of the woman in the stock photo, on the left.  #6 She isn't a real person. pic.twitter.com/p81dYu2rNV — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 At some point after Schooley's above tweet, Heavy changed the article's top image to one of Ahyanah Nicole Mincy.  See here: Different day, different photographImage: Meanwhile, Manning's Medium account — which, as of this writing, is suspended — has a blog post about Nicole and her Trump-focused apparel company—only it's the same exact piece as the ones that appear in the Daily Caller and elsewhere.  Schooley also found that many of the bots, Nicole's included, circulate memes and fake news stories.  Literally dozens of these memes on this bot account. pic.twitter.com/i4k31mrrZi — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 While diversity might be an issue in Trump's base, in Schooley's view that definitely isn't the case when it comes to fake followers.  Never let it be said that Trump doesn't have diverse fictional followers. pic.twitter.com/qbt7UdmOpK — Schooley (@Rschooley) August 6, 2017 Despite overwhelming evidence provided by Schooley's detailed theory, the safest bet to confirm whether or not the person behind the account and ProTrump45 store is real is to hear from the women in the photographs themselves. Mashable has reached out to Ahyanah Nicole Mincy — not through @ProTrump45 — for further clarification. With that being said—will the real Nicole Mincey please stand up?  WATCH: 5 things millennials have ruined

Ex-soldier held in Turkey on terror charges is innocent, parents insistA British solider arrested on holiday for fighting Isil was only in Syria "to help people", his parents have claimed, as they appealed for his release. Joe Robinson, 24, from Accrington, Lancs, was arrested on 22 July while on holiday in the town of Didim in south-west Turkey. He was accused of "being a member of a terrorist organisation", apparently in connection with time he spent in Syria fighting with the Kurdish militia in 2014, and was initially held alongside his girlfriend and her mother. Joseph Robinson Credit: Facebook They were released after six days, but Robinson remains in custody. "I just want information," his mother, Sharon, 48, told the Guardian. "We don't know if there's a court date, how he is coping or what he's actually being charged with. "I've asked if there's any way we can get in touch with him but I've heard nothing at all. "I had no idea about the situation in Turkey and I don't think Joe did either, otherwise he wouldn't have gone there on holiday." Robinson's father Andrew, 53, added: "We can't get anywhere. I'm ringing Turkey and getting no response. "It's not the Foreign Office's fault – they're ringing Turkey and Turkey aren't telling them anything. "He's only just managed to get an English-speaking solicitor after more than a week in custody." Robinson's solicitor, Kaya Kayaoglu, who visited Robinson on Tuesday, told the BBC he was in jail in the town of Aydin, western Turkey. Joseph Robinson Credit: Facebook "He looked fine and in good spirits but we do not know when he will be taken to court," he said, adding that it could take months for prosecutors to write an indictment. Robinson's girlfriend, Mira Rojkan, 22, said: "We were still wet and in our towels when about 20 armed plain-clothed police surrounded us and took us inside the house we were staying in. "They searched the house for more than an hour but found nothing except a water pistol we'd been messing around with the day before. "It was just awful. They said someone had sent them an email saying we were terrorists about to do something in Turkey. "That is complete rubbish. They said pictures on Facebook of Joe in Kurdish uniform proved he is a terrorist." Sharon Robinson insisted her son was "not capable of anything like that". "He's impulsive, he's crackers, but he's not that. He's a really good lad." A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are aware of the detention of a British national in Turkey and have requested consular access."

It briefly tailed the Aquarius, operated by French group SOS Mediterranee, one of several NGO boats conducting search and rescue operations in an area notorious for deadly migrant boat sinkings.

Apple's rumored smart glasses may feature 3D cameras without a dedicated display

The enthralling augmented reality videos we've seen iOS developers release over the past few weeks may only be the beginning of Apple's augmented reality ambitions. According to a new report from the Financial Times, Apple is actively trying to develop a pair of AR powered smart glasses, echoing a number of previous rumors we've seen sprout up over the last few months.

Interestingly, the report notes that Apple is exploring a number of different designs for its rumored smart glasses, with one design said to feature 3D cameras with no accompanying display on the device itself. A final design has yet to be determined, with the report adding that Apple is still trying to figure out what type of feature set would provide an optimal user experience.

"A particular area of experimentation, people familiar with the matter say, is a pair of AR glasses that might move cameras, sensors and screens from the smartphone to the face," the report reads. "Yet despite the excitement surrounding ARKit, internally the company is still not sure what the most compelling application for such a headset might be."

The notion that Apple is working on a pair of smart glasses is, again, nothing new. Not only have a number of credible sources confirmed Apple's research in the area, Apple over the last 18 months has hired a number of reputed engineers and researchers with vast experience in fields such as optics and head-mounted displays. Indeed, some of the engineers working on the project previously worked on the Oculus Rift and Microsoft's HoloLens headset.

Last November, Bloomberg added:

While still in an exploration phase, the device would connect wirelessly to iPhones, show images and other information in the wearer's field of vision, and may use augmented reality, the people said. They asked not to be identified speaking about a secret project.

Furthermore, a purported Foxconn insider divulged a number of intriguing tidbits regarding Apple's smart glasses project during an all-encompassing Reddit AMA this past June. According to this mysterious insider -- whose identity was confirmed by Reddit moderators -- Apple's smart glasses will likely be equipped with a microphone for Siri commands along with an accelerometer to determine when a user moves his or her head in a certain direction. It's worth noting that the Foxconn insider believes that Apple's smart glasses will not include a camera due to battery life considerations, a design which is seemingly at odds with what the Financial Times reported above.

Features aside, Apple's smart glasses -- assuming it ever sees the light of day -- will reportedly come in varying sizes for men and women and will be available in a few color options.

Iranian politicians censured after dashing to take selfies with top female EU diplomat

Iranian politicians censured after dashing to take selfies with top female EU diplomat Iranian politicians have been criticised for unprofessional behaviour "unworthy of MPs" after they rushed to take selfies with a senior female EU diplomat. Pictures circulated online showed male politicians – some in suits and others in the robes worn by Shi'ite Islamic clerics – crowding around Federica Mogherini, who was attending Hassan Rouhani's second term inauguration as President. Discussions emerged at the Iranian Parliament after Iranian Deputies' effort to take selfies with Ms Mogherini Credit: Stringer/Anadolu Agency/Getty Images In a green and white checked headscarf, Ms Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, looked taken aback at the crowd forming around her in the Iranian Parliament building in Tehran. The men's actions drew criticism from fellow MPs and Iranians online, who saw their behaviour as an inappropriate sop to the west. The semi-official Fars News Agency described the men's rush for photos with Ms Mogherini, as "strange", accompanying images with the hashtag "selfie of shame". "Major reactions to weird behaviour unworthy of MPs, members of Omid faction, upon meeting Mogherini", the agency said, referring to a reformist group of Iranian MPs. One compared their attraction to Ms Mogherini to the seven dwarves' fondness for Snow White in the classic Walt Disney story, using an image of them lining up at the foot of her bed. لامصب، گفتم اینو من یه جایی قبلاً دیده بودم ها ...#سفیدبرفی#سلفی#مجلس#موگرینی#تحلیفpic.twitter.com/RkTXMt6kv2— شاه دولابی (@SHAH_DULABI) August 6, 2017 Others published pictures of the incident alongside that of Monica Belluci in the film Malena, in which the actress is surrounded by men offering to light her cigarette. Another commented on the EU diplomat's popularity in the Iranian parliament. Close enough#موگرینی#تحلیف#مجلسpic.twitter.com/4rveSUW6e7— Natsu!! But Sadegh Kharrazi, a former Iranian diplomat, called for "a unit of ethics and ethics training for delegates" in response to the controversial photos. MP Alireza Salimi, called the behaviour "self-surrender to the West" and said that further complaints against the men could trigger a inquiry into their conduct, according to the BBC. Ms Mogherini released a statement on her trip to Iran but did not comment on the images. In April the EU extended sanctions against Iran over human rights violations. Conservatives among the Iranian parliament may have been alarmed at their colleagues' willingness to approach a foreign woman, in a country where relations between the sexes remain a significant point of contention. Only one woman has held a ministerial position in the Iranian government since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, according to Human Rights Watch.
