#AintNoCinderella: Woman who sparked viral twitter campaign by Indian women 'vindicated' after two men arrested A young woman at the centre of a high profile stalking case that has gripped India for days has spoken of her surprise at becoming a rallying call for women's rights across the South Asian nation of 1.3 billion.   Varnika Kundu, a 29-year-old DJ, told the Telegraph that she felt "vindicated" after two men were arrested and charged on Wednesday with attempting to kidnap her when they chased her car late on Friday night through the northern Indian city of Chandigarh. The arrests followed an impromptu "AintNoCinderella" Twitter campaign of Indian women posting defiant pictures of themselves out after midnight after a senior male politician suggested Ms Kundu was at fault for being "out so late in the night." In a Facebook post that quickly went viral, Ms Kundu described a terrifying ordeal where the perpetrators drove parallel to her car for 25 minutes and then blocked her car before "aggressively" trying to enter her vehicle. Indian woman victim-blamed after being stalked is defended by Twitter users 01:28 She said they enjoyed her distress, and felt lucky that she was "not lying raped and murdered in a ditch somewhere." In an interview, Ms Kundu said her story had struck a chord with many Indian women who had told her of similar experiences. Their support had helped her through attempts to sully her character for driving alone at night. "It's been overwhelming," she said. "I think Indian women are just so sick and tired of being treated like second class citizens, of just being told because you were born different you're not good enough, you can't do the same things that a boy can do." The case shocked India to the core, but the victim was also criticised for going to the cinema in the  evening with a male friend.  The defence lawyer for her attackers claimed that if his own daughter "allowed herself to lose face and character" that he would "set her alight." "Why was she allowed to roam around at night? Parents should not allow their children to stay out late … what is the point of roaming around at night?" he said. She said she was grateful through her ordeal to have been given a platform to challenge deep-seated patriarchal attitudes in modern Indian society.   "I've said things that all Indian women have always wanted to say. Basic questions like why does the victim have to answer?" she said.

The Great American Eclipse - when is it, where is it , and how to watch it

Posted: 08 Aug 2017 05:46 PM PDT

The Great American Eclipse - when is it, where is it , and how to watch it On Monday, August 21 the sun, moon and Earth will line up in an act of cosmic serendipity that will turn day across the 2,680-mile width of the United States. It will be the first time that has happened in nearly a century, and never will a total solar eclipse be so heavily viewed and studied. From Oregon in the west, to South Carolina in the east, there will be festivals and flamboyant eclipse viewing parties. And of course, traffic gridlock, an social media explosion, and general chaos As one astronomer put it: "This will be the most photographed, most shared, most tweeted event in human history." How unusual an event is this? Full solar eclipses, when the moon positions itself smack between the sun and the Earth, happen every few years but often in remote areas or over the ocean. This will be the first total solar eclipse in 99 years to cross the US coast-to-coast, and the first to pass through any part of the lower 48 states in 38 years. An illustration from Nasa Credit: AFP Where is it happening? The path of totality - where the light of the sun is completely blocked out by the moon - is 70 miles wide and stretches from Lincoln City, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina, passing through 14 states and 21 National Parks The total eclipse will last about 90 minutes as the lunar shadow sweeps across America at more than 1,500 mph beginning about 10.15 am west coast time. On the east coast it will end at 2.49 pm east coast time. Eclipse Fests, StarFests, SolarFests, SolFests, Darkening of the SunFests, MoonshadowFests, EclipseCons, Eclipse Encounters and Star Parties are planned along the path of totality. Vineyards, breweries, museums, parks, universities, stadiums, just about everybody is getting into the act. Schoolchildren wearing protective glasses Credit: Reuters What if you're not in the US? Don't worry, Nasa will be broadcasting the whole thing on the internet and TV. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station will beam back pictures, as will ships and planes and high altitude balloons. "This is a really amazing chance to just open the public's eyes to wonder," said physicist Angela Des Jardins, who is in charge of Nasa' eclipse video ballooning project. Eclipses mean chaos Will there be chaos? Undoubtedly. An estimated 200 million people live within a day's drive of the path of totality and huge crowds are expected. The lightly populated state of Oregon is expecting up to one million eclipse chasers and is treating the event as an emergency. Police everywhere are asking people to be patient. Even stuck in a traffic jam the sight should be wonderful. An eclipse in Beijing in 2010 Credit: Getty Rain means pain... Above all, eclipse viewing is dependent on clear skies, and the best advice is to find somewhere high and dry. Experienced eclipse watchers say the best bet is to avoid both coasts, where rain is more likely. States like Wyoming and Idaho could fare better. Ideally, the best option is to be somewhere remote with access to a fast car and clear roads in case a cloud settles overhead. The  Astronomical League for amateur astronomers, who know a thing or two, are heading for Casper, Wyoming. Majestic solar eclipse lights up Southern Hemisphere 00:31 How long will totality last? It varies in different places, Darkness will last just under two minutes in Oregon, gradually expanding to a maximum two minutes and 44 seconds in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, and into Kentucky, then dwindling to two-and-a-half minutes in South Carolina.  Will there also be a partial eclipse? The partial eclipse will extend up through Canada and down through Central America and the top of South America. Minneapolis will see 86 per cent of the sun covered, Miami 82 per cent, Montreal 66 per cent, and Mexico City sees 38 per cent. NASA satellite witnesses a rare double eclipse 00:36 Are protective eclipse glasses necessary? Absolutely. The only time you can look at the eclipse is during totality. Experts say at any point when the eclipse is partial, even if only a sliver of the sun is visible, it would burn the back of your eyes to look at it. "Unfortunately, I think it is probably true that during every solar eclipse, there's bound to be somebody who does get hurt," said Ralph Chou, an optometry professor and leading authority on eye damage from eclipse viewing. Timelapse Shows Total Solar Eclipse Over Indonesia 02:03 How about watching from a plane South West Airlines has worked out that the eclipse will be visible from a handful of its scheduled flights, taking off from dEnver, Seattle and Portland. They'll be serving "cosmic cocktails" to the lucky passengers. Is there a Trump link to the eclipse? The Boston Globe newspaper made a valiant attempt to link the eclipse to Donald Trump, noting that 92 per cent of the 240 counties in the path of totality voted for the president in last year's election. However, the internet appeared to decide that this was a Trump link too far. Leave it to the Globe to make a solar eclipse political. (BTW Globe, the sun and moon don't care who's president!)— Gary Black (@GaryBlackal) August 4, 2017 What do the experts say about eclipses? Nasa guru Bill Cooke says: "It is the most weird, creepy, awe-inspiring astronomical event you will experience." Rick Fienberg, spokesman for the American Astronomical Society: "Going through life without ever experiencing totality is like going through life without ever falling in love." When's the next one in the US? April 8, 2024. It might be even better with four minutes totality.

Florida man discovers huge snake has been living in his attic for years

Florida man discovers huge snake has been living in his attic for yearsOut of all the stuff that can go wrong in Florida, finding out that a snake has been hiding out in your attic is probably low on the list. Bob van der Herchen recently had the pleasure of discovering a 6-foot boa constrictor living in the attic of his home in Englewood, Florida, rent free. According to WFLA, van der Herchen's son and wife often complained about noise coming from the attic, but he payed no attention to it. SEE ALSO: Commuting snake hitches a ride home on a Boston train "He used to complain he'd hear sounds in the attic. I didn't think much of it, I thought maybe it was rats," van der Herchen told WFLA. Just rats, nothing to see here. Well, the attic intruder was actually a massive snake. A snake trapper helped the family safely remove the boa from the attic, and in the process found it had shed some skin. The man estimates the snake had been living in the attic for years.  According to van der Herchen, the snake's cozy resting spot was right above the chair his wife sat in. "It was actually bunking in the rafter space right above the Florida room chair where my wife sits," he said. The man believes the snake was once a pet, a common problem in Florida, and entered his home by a tree branch that was hanging close to his house. "He hopes this story serves as a reminder to homeowners to trim overgrown trees," WFLA wrote. Yeah, that's the problem here. Overgrown trees.  WATCH: Rogue deer tackles innocent man in a parking lot

Donald Trump 'given daily dossier of positive news about himself'

Posted: 08 Aug 2017 07:07 PM PDT

Donald Trump 'given daily dossier of positive news about himself'Donald Trump has reportedly been given a dossier of positive news coverage about himself twice a day since entering the White House. Consisting of about 20-25 pages, the packet is filled with screenshots of positive cable news headlines, admiring tweets, transcripts of positive TV interviews, praise-filled news stories, and sometimes just pictures of the president on TV looking powerful, Vice News reported, citing White House sources.  The folder is said to be compiled from the clippings that are sent to the White House from the Republican National Committee's "war room," which monitors local and national news, cable television, social media, digital media, and print media.  Vice reported that the idea came from Reince Priebus, who was chief of staff until his recent ousting, and Sean Spicer, who resigned as White House press secretary last month. Sean Spicer and Reince Priebus Credit: Reuters Both were reportedly eager to deliver the package, which became known by some in the White House as "the propaganda document", the news website quoted an official as saying. "Priebus and Spicer weren't in a good position, and they wanted to show they could provide positive coverage," the official said. "It was self-preservation."  Mr Spicer disputed the nature of the dossier. "While I won't comment on materials we share with the president, this is not accurate on several levels," he told Vice, without elaborating.  Now that Mr Spicer and Mr Priebus have departed, the officials say the folder has been produced less frequently. While Mr Trump has often railed at "fake news", usually targeting the New York Times or CNN, he has regularly tweeted reports that praise him.  In a bid to promote positive news,  Team Trump is now producing what it is billing as the "Real News." The first "Real News" video appeared a little over a week ago on Mr Trump's Facebook page and featured the president's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who is married to his son Eric.

Scientists discover two potentially habitable 'super-Earth' planets just 12 light years away

Posted: 09 Aug 2017 11:08 PM PDT

Scientists discover two potentially habitable 'super-Earth' planets just 12 light years awayTwo potentially habitable "super-Earths" orbit a star just 12 light years away that is our nearest sun-like neighbour, scientists have discovered. The worlds at the edges of Tau Ceti's "habitable zone" belong to a solar system of four rocky planets similar in size to Earth. British-led astronomers speculate that the system might be a potential candidate for future interstellar colonisation. But life on the new outposts may be far from peaceful. There is evidence of a massive debris disc circling the star, increasing the chances of the planets being pounded by asteroids and comets. A key aspect of the discovery was the detection of exoplanets with masses as low as 1.7 times the Earth's, making them the smallest worlds ever spotted around a sun-like star. The scientists used the "wobble" method of planet finding that measures the influence of gravitational interaction on a star. As a planet orbits, it causes its parent star to wobble by a tiny degree. Astronomers can see the signature of this effect in the star's light. Two potentially habitable "super-Earths" have been discovered.  Credit: PA Lead researcher Dr Fabo Feng, from the University of Hertfordshire, said: "We're getting tantalisingly close to observing the correct limits required for detecting Earth-like planets. "Our detection of such weak wobbles is a milestone in the search for Earth analogues and the understanding of the Earth's habitability through comparison with these." Sun-like stars hold out the best hope of finding planets beyond the solar system that host life. Tau Ceti, a favourite destination of science fiction writers, is very similar to the sun both in size and brightness. Like the sun, it has a "habitable zone", a narrow region around it where conditions are favourable for Earth-like life. Within the habitable, or "Goldilocks" zone, temperatures are not too hot or too cold but just right for surface water to exist as a liquid. A habitable zone planet could have oceans, lakes and rivers. Space tourism: 10 ways you can leave planet Earth Neither of Tau Ceti's "super-Earths" lie in the centre of its habitable zone. One orbits on the inner border and the other on the outer. The Earth is situated halfway between the middle of the sun's habitable zone and its inner boundary. The astronomers analysed starlight wavelength data obtained from the European Southern Observatory in Chile and the Keck observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Their findings are to be published in the Astronomical Journal. Co-author Dr Mikko Tuomi, also from the University of Hertfordshire, said improved techniques were making it easier to distinguish between light signals caused by the presence of planets and stellar activity. Two Tau Ceti signals previously identified in 2013 were now known not to have a planetary origin. "But no matter how we look at the star, there seems to be at least four rocky planets orbiting it," Dr Tuomi said. "We're slowly learning to tell the difference between wobbles caused by planets and those caused by stellar active surface. "This enabled us to verify the existence of the two outer, potentially habitable, planets in the system." Life on the Solar System

Scientists finally give the biggest dinosaur that ever lived a name

Scientists finally give the biggest dinosaur that ever lived a name

There's a new king of the dinosaurs. Researchers working with bones found half a decade ago in Argentina have finally classified and named the new species that is thought to have been the largest of all the mighty reptiles. It's called Patagotitan mayorum, and it was so incredibly huge that it would have made even fearsome carnivores like the Tyrannosaurus rex look downright tiny by comparison.

Patagotitan mayorum — whose name is derived from Patagonia, Argentina, where its fossils were first discovered — lived some 100 million years ago. A half dozen examples of the species have been unearthed so far, and by averaging their sizes, scientists have been able to get a rough idea for what they looked like in the flesh. The research was published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The massive plant-eaters were true titans of their day, averaging 122 feet in length with a shoulder height of around 20 feet. When the animal raised its mighty neck its height would have been several times taller, and like other sauropod dinosaurs it likely used its impressive reach to pick plant material from towering trees.

With a weight that could top 80 tons, the creature was roughly as heavy as the Space Shuttle (minus a full tank of fuel) and are thought to have been extremely slow moving. Compared to the Tyrannosaurus rex, which weighed just shy of 9 tons in adulthood, the Patagotitan mayorum would have been hard to miss, and scientists believe it could be the largest land animal that ever walked the Earth.

Former Pakistan PM risks wrath of the army as he plans to install his wife in his old seatThe ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan has raised fears of instability in the country by planning to install his politically inexperienced wife in the parliamentary seat he was recently disqualified from. Nawaz Sharif is set to nominate Kulsoom Nawaz, his spouse of 47 years, as the ruling party's candidate to fill the vacant NA-120 seat in Lahore, according to local media reports. The provocative move comes as Mr Sharif plans to take to the streets to protest his ousting by the Supreme Court at the end of last month.  Mr Sharif's attempt to retain control of the country via his wife is unlikely to please Pakistan's military, which has long objected to his desire to improve relations with India. "They," wrote columnist Cyril Almeida, using a common code-word for the army, "came all this way, shook up the system, only to see Nawaz quickly find a way to stay in control?... It doesn't look sustainable" Kulsoom Sharif has no prior political experience Credit: AP "Kulsoom's nomination is desperate," a spokesman for the opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, told The Telegraph. "It will be foiled by voters in the constituency," which Mr Sharif won with a hefty majority of 40,000 votes in 2013. Kulsoom Nawaz has not previously held political office. Although she led a campaign against the imprisonment of Mr Sharif in 1999, following a military coup, as first lady she has largely kept silent. Officials in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) say that Mr Sharif is also considering his daughter as a candidate. Previously seen as Mr Sharif's political heir, Maryam, 43, has gained exposure handling communications in the prime minister's office, and through bolshy use of her personal Twitter account, which has 3.4m followers. However, she faces a forthcoming trial over allegations she assisted her father in laundering money to purchase four flats in Park Lane. Both she and her father deny the allegations. Mr Sharif's reported plan would rip up a previous agreement designed to keep peace in the PML-N, whereby his brother would have shuffled into the vacant seat, and from there swiftly into the role of Prime Minister. "Choosing his wife over his brother will deepen the crisis of credibility for Nawaz Sharif," said Mosharraf Zaidi, a columnist. "How many metros has Mrs Nawaz Sharif built?" On Wednesday Mr Sharif is set to drive in a 'cavalcade' from Islamabad, the capital, to his home town of Lahore, where the 67-year-old will address a large rally of supporters. The ex-PM is expected to develop his claim that a "conspiracy", led by the army, was behind his disqualification following a trial linked to revelations in the Panama Papers.   On Monday night, a bomb exploded along Mr Sharif's planned route, injuring 24 people and prompting the former premier's team to announce he would not leave the confines of his bullet-proof vehicle on the journey south.

Crocodile rock: ancient beast named after Motörhead band's LemmyBy Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A ferocious sea-going crocodile that menaced coastal waters about 164 million years ago during the Jurassic Period has been given a name honoring the similarly ferocious heavy-metal rocker Lemmy, the late front man for the British band Motörhead. Scientists said on Wednesday they have named the 19-foot-long (5.8 meters) reptile Lemmysuchus, meaning "Lemmy's crocodile." Its fossils were unearthed near the eastern English city of Peterborough in 1909 and were recently re-examined and determined to be a distinct genus in need of a name. It boasted large, blunt teeth perfect for crushing turtle shells or other hard-bodied prey like hard-scaled fish, said University of Edinburgh paleontologist Michela Johnson, lead author of the study published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
