Merkel warns Turkey after two more German citizens detained Posted: 01 Sep 2017 09:59 AM PDT Two more German citizens have been arrested in Turkey "for political reasons", Berlin said Friday, as Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Ankara that Germany could reexamine its policies following the latest Turkish action. The latest arrests bring the total number of German political prisoners in Turkish custody to 12 at a time when ties between the two countries have badly frayed. There is "no legal basis" for detention in most of these cases, Merkel said, according to remarks carried by Germany's DPA news agency. |

Hezbollah says buses from IS convoy stuck in the desert Posted: 02 Sep 2017 07:55 AM PDT Lebanon's Hezbollah group said in a statement on Saturday that it and the Syrian army had fulfilled their obligations by safely transporting a convoy of Islamic State fighters and their families out of Syrian government territory. Six buses from the convoy were still in Syrian government territory and in the care of Hezbollah and the Syrian government, the statement said. Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shi'ite group allied to the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, called on the international community to intervene to prevent what it called a massacre of the people stuck on the buses in the desert. |

"We never forgot Cologne," Elizabeth Reichert told the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper by phone from her home in Philadelphia. Reichert said she worked as a hairdresser, while her husband took a job for a wholesaler selling pets and pet supplies, before setting up his own business and making millions. |

Iran sees little chance of enemy attack: military chief Posted: 02 Sep 2017 07:03 AM PDT DUBAI (Reuters) - - Enemies are unlikely to attack Iran, especially on the ground, the country's military chief predicted on Saturday, saying even "unwise" leaders in the West know that any such conflict would have huge costs for them. U.S. President Donald Trump, adopting an aggressive posture towards Iran after its test launch of a ballistic missile, said in February that "nothing is off the table" in dealing with Tehran, and the White House said it was putting Iran "on notice". "In the remote case of an aggression (by enemies), this won't be on the ground because they would face brave warriors," Iran's semi-official news agency Tasnim quoted military chief of staff General Mohammad Baqeri as saying. |
Posted: 01 Sep 2017 06:03 AM PDT Trump tweeted his support apparently in response to a Washington Post report that suggested that the president was bristling at the new White House regime. "General John Kelly is doing a great job as Chief of Staff," Trump tweeted. "I could not be happier or more impressed - and this Administration continues to.....get things done at a record clip. |
Jeff Sessions' Justice Department to put woman who laughed at him on trial again Posted: 01 Sep 2017 10:58 AM PDT Jeff Sessions' Justice Department reportedly intends take a woman who laughed at the now-attorney general back to trial. Code Pink activist Desiree Fairooz, 61, who was taken into custody after she laughed during Mr Sessions' confirmation hearing, will go to trial in November for a second time. In July, a judge had thrown out out a jury's conviction of Ms Fairooz, finding that the government had improperly argued during the proceedings that her laughter was enough to merit a guilty verdict. |

Booming Houston built over land meant for flood projects Posted: 01 Sep 2017 11:37 PM PDT HOUSTON (AP) — The explosive expansion of Houston subdivisions into prairies far to the west helped make the city affordable for the average 345 people who moved there each day, but it also paved over thousands of acres that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had intended for a reservoir and other flood-control projects to help against deluges like the ones from Harvey. |

California governor declares wildfire state of emergency Posted: 01 Sep 2017 11:00 PM PDT California Governor Jerry Brown on Friday issued an emergency declaration for a wildfire burning in the northern part of the state, the same day the man accused of starting the blaze was charged with arson. The so-called Ponderosa Fire has burned 3,715 acres (1,503 hectares) and destroyed 30 homes in Butte County, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders to residents of some 500 homes in the area, officials said. The blaze is burning east of the town of Oroville, about 85 miles (137 km) north of the state capital of Sacramento. |

Posted: 01 Sep 2017 11:57 AM PDT The Treasury Department has confirmed they are investigating if its chief used taxpayer money for a personal trip to view the solar eclipse. A watchdog group believed Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and his wife Louise Linton took a government plane to view the 21 August solar eclipse in Tennessee. The pair joined Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in his home state to view the event atop Fort Knox, an Army base and home of $200 billion US gold bullion depository. |
