Under Trump, the swamp takes to the air — in private jets — and the public pays Posted: 29 Sep 2017 12:12 PM PDT Despite a history of attacking wasteful spending by Democrats, HHS Secretary Tom Price has led a host of Trump Cabinet members in taxpayer-funded private travel. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, EPA head Scott Pruitt, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin — all have been called out for flying high on the government's dime. |

How The GOP Tax Plan Could Radically Reshape U.S. Housing Policy Posted: 29 Sep 2017 11:45 AM PDT WASHINGTON ― The tax reform blueprint Republicans unveiled this week would upend U.S. housing policy if it becomes law. "This proposal will take away any tax benefit for owning homes for the vast majority of people who own homes," said Gregg Polsky, a tax expert at the University of Georgia. Mortgage interest and property tax deductions cost the U.S. Treasury more than $100 billion a year in lost tax revenue, expenditures that are bigger in dollar terms than any other housing program. |

Putin complains Russian media abroad face unacceptable pressure Posted: 29 Sep 2017 03:20 AM PDT President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of Russia's Security Council on Friday that Russian media outlets working abroad were facing growing and unacceptable pressure, Dmitry Peskov, his spokesman, said. "It was stressed that such pressure on Russian media is unacceptable," Peskov told a conference call with reporters. Earlier this week, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Washington of putting unwarranted pressure on the U.S operations of Kremlin-backed media outlet RT, and warned that Moscow could take tit-for-tat measures. |

US says Rohingya 'ethnic cleansing' shames Suu Kyi govt Posted: 28 Sep 2017 03:51 PM PDT The United States accused Myanmar Thursday of the ethnic cleansing of minority Rohingya Muslims, saying the bloodshed in Rakhine state had shamed Aung Sang Suu Kyi's government. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting, US Ambassador Nikki Haley pressed for members of Myanmar's military to face action from the global body in response to the violence and expressed sharp criticism of the civilian government. |

Posted: 29 Sep 2017 02:56 AM PDT President Donald Trump's administration is not forcing Puerto Rican hurricane victims to pay to be evacuated from the island, contrary to some reports, but evacuees from the island of Dominica will still owe money. The US State Department requires all US citizens to repay the costs of an evacuation, but this rule only applies to US citizens based internationally. Puerto Rico is US territory so evacuations do not fall under the department's jurisdiction, officials have explained. |

US to Americans: Stay away from Cuba after health 'attacks' Posted: 29 Sep 2017 05:04 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States delivered an ominous warning to Americans on Friday to stay away from Cuba and ordered home more than half the U.S. diplomatic corps, acknowledging neither the Cubans nor America's FBI can figure out who or what is responsible for months of mysterious health ailments. |
The last thing comet probe Rosetta saw Posted: 28 Sep 2017 10:34 AM PDT Robotic comet explorer Rosetta sent home a last-gasp photo of her target's rocky facade before crashing into its surface to end a 12-year deep-space odyssey, ground controllers said Thursday. Almost a year to the day since Rosetta's demise on September 30 last year, the European Space Agency (ESA) issued the fuzzy image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, pieced together from the final bursts of data relayed by the orbiter. The image of a one-square-metre (3.3 foot by 3.3 foot) section of comet presumed to be Rosetta's boulder-strewn, dusty resting place, was taken from a distance of about 20 metres. |

This Is the U.S. Military's Tank-Killer Missile That Russia Fears Most Posted: 29 Sep 2017 10:33 AM PDT When Russia provided military support to separatists in Ukraine, columns of Russian tanks were instrumental in turning back Ukrainian Army offensives and seizing government strongpoints, notably the Donetsk International Airport in January 2015. For hawks like Senator John McCain pushing for the United States to provide direct military aid to Ukraine, Javelin missiles were cited as a key weapon system that might have reversed the Ukrainian Army's fortunes on the battlefield—and one far more practical to put into action than a main battle tank or jet fighter. The U.S.-made FGM-148 Javelin is one of the premier portable anti-tank missile systems in the world. |
