| Russia fire: Scores of children feared among at least 64 killed as investigators reveal fire exits were blocked Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:37 AM PDT  Investigators looking into a fire that killed at least 64 people at a busy shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo said on Monday that a security guard had turned off the fire alarm system and that exits had been illegally blocked. The fire, one of the deadliest in Russia since the break-up of the Soviet Union, swept through the upper floors of the Winter Cherry shopping centre on Sunday afternoon where a cinema complex and children's play area were located. As many as 41 children could be among the victims of the blaze in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, which started on Sunday. Around a dozen people are still believed to be missing. Video footage showed a group of people in a smoke-filled staircase trying to smash a fire exit door, which was jammed. Others were seen jumping from windows to escape the flames. Local media quoted two witnesses who said the fire alarm did not go off. "The flames engulfed everything in a moment. "At that moment, my child was hanging one and a half metres up in the air on a zip wire and the man who had tied him on had disappeared… but a girl appeared from somewhere and got him down. Without her he would have died." One woman told the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper that she got a phone call from her 12-year old niece who was trapped in a burning cinema on the top floor of the building. "Tell my mother that I love her," she said. Video shot by witnesses on their mobile phones showed people screaming and running amid a chaotic evacuation. One parent of a child who was caught up in the blaze told Russian television that security guards had refused to allow her daughter to leave the burning building via a stairwell. President Vladimir Putin, re-elected last weekend, has yet to speak publicly about the tragedy, which has stirred deep anger in Kemerovo, a coal-producing region about 3,600 km (2,200 miles) east of Moscow. The Kremlin published a statement, saying Putin "expressed his deep condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those who died." The ceilings of two cinema theaters in the mall reportedly collapsed Russia's Investigative Committee, which handles major crimes, said it was trying to bring in the mall's owner for questioning and wanted to detain a security guard who had turned off the fire alarm system after learning of the blaze. "Serious violations (of the law) took place when the mall was being built and when it was functioning. The fire exits were blocked," Svetlana Petrenko, a spokeswoman for the committee, said in a statement. She said investigators, who have opened a criminal investigation into the blaze, were looking into other possible violations. Four people have already been detained, including the owners and lessees of outlets inside the mall. Alexander Lillyevyali told Russian news website Meduza that his three daughters, two aged 11 and one aged 5, were killed in the blaze. The girls were watching a film in a cinema on the fourth floor of the shopping centre, he said, when he got a call from one who told him there was a fire in the cinema but neither she nor her sisters could get out because the cinema doors were locked. Lillyevyali, who was waiting on the first floor, said he rushed to try and reach them. "When I got to the fourth floor, I broke a window so there would be an upwards draft. I started to crawl but I realised I had no strength, I had inhaled so much smoke that I was on the verge of fainting. My daughter was calling and calling me. I could only shout down the phone that she try to get out of the cinema but I couldn't do anything – there were flames in front of me," he said. Maya Yerokhina, a young girl who was reportedly on the list of people missing in the blaze, updated her status on her profile page on Russian social networking site Vkontakte on Sunday to read: "This is the end." The aunt of 12-year old Viktoriya Pochankina told Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper she got a phone call from her niece who was trapped by the blaze. "Tell my mother that I love her," she said down the phone. Pochankina was reportedly one of a group of eight children from Treschevsky village, 30 miles from Kemerovo, who had been taken to the cinema by their teacher as an end-of-term treat. But having a few famous faces around never hurts. It wasn't just "a few," however. Celebrities were out in full force, and in a variety of locations, to support stricter gun controls and other legislative efforts meant to ensure that incidents like the school shooting in Parkland never occur again. Some showed up to put their familiar face behind a powerful movement. Others pointed back at the brave teens who turned their grief into something positive. Even in this era of Trump, when it feels like there are important, meaningful public demonstrations on a weekly basis, the turnout of famous faces supporting March For Our Lives felt like a lot. Australian airline Qantas has made that trek less arduous with the debut of its non-stop Perth to London flight on Saturday — its travel time has been shaved down to a somewhat brisk 17 hours. The Chinese military's latest fighters and bombers were involved in the exercises over the disputed region, as China continues to flex its muscles on the world stage. The drills come after Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, gave a nationalist speech last week when he warned of Beijing's willingness to fight a "bloody battle" against its enemies. They also come after Gavin Williamson, British Defence Secretary, said last month that the HMS Sutherland, an anti-submarine frigate, would sail through the South China Sea to assert freedom of navigation rights. Days after the inauguration, an expert in crowd science compared photos of Trump's with Barack Obama's and deduced that the former attracted roughly one-third the crowd of the latter. It's hard to be exact when dealing with such massive numbers of people, but with Obama's estimated inauguration attendance 1.8 million, Trump's total falls somewhere in the realm of 600,000. We point this out only because Trump infamously made such a big deal out of his inauguration crowd. He sent his then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer out to proclaim that Trump's crowd "was the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period." Despite the fact that Spicer's statement was provably false, Trump has never backtracked the claim or publicly backed off his contention. March For Our Lives isn't the first demonstration to draw a larger crowd than Trump's inauguration — that distinction inarguably goes to the Women's March on Washington, staged one day after the new president was sworn in.
