A Climate Change Litmus Test For Democrats Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:00 AM PST In April 2016, at a campaign stop on the campus of SUNY Purchase, just north of New York City, I filmed a short video of Hillary Clinton. The video quickly went viral, partly because of the outsized response from a famously tight-lipped politician, partly because it played so well into the Democratic primary narrative that pitted Clinton, buddy-buddy with Wall Street, against the people-powered challenge of Sen. Bernie Sanders. The furor that the video generated sprang from fissures in the Democratic Party that perfunctory resistance to President Donald Trump has only papered over. |

Trump joins mourners at funeral of U.S. evangelist Billy Graham Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:16 AM PST The faithful from small towns gathered on Friday with President Donald Trump and other powerful politicians in North Carolina for the funeral of evangelist Billy Graham, who preached to millions around the world in a 70-year career. The service for Graham, who died on Feb. 21 at age 99, comes after he lay in honor at the U.S. Capitol in recognition of a clergyman who counseled presidents and became the first noted evangelist to take his message to the Soviet bloc during a time when its communist regimes were hostile to organized religion. The North Carolina native will later be buried in a pine coffin made by a Louisiana prison inmate, and laid to rest next to his late wife, Ruth, at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. |
Roy Moore Is Now Asking For Money On Facebook To Defend Himself Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:46 AM PST Former Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore has asked supporters for financial assistance to defend against a defamation lawsuit brought by an Alabama woman who accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 14 years old. In a Facebook post this week, Moore said his "resources have been depleted" and he has "struggled to make ends meet" due to legal fees and expenses. "I now face another vicious attack from lawyers in Washington D. C. and San Francisco who have hired one of the biggest firms in Birmingham Alabama to bring another legal action against me and ensure that I never fight again," he wrote in the lengthy screed. |

Iran says no missile talks unless West gives up its nuclear weapons Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:22 AM PST Iran's armed forces spokesman said on Saturday that there can be no talks on the country's missile programme without the West's destruction of its nuclear weapons and long-range missiles. "What Americans say out of desperation with regards to limiting the Islamic republic of Iran's missile capability is an unattainable dream," Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri told the official IRNA news agency. US President Donald Trump has threatened to tear up a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers unless more is done to curb Iran's missile programme. |
Delta To Georgia Lawmakers: 'Our Values Are Not For Sale' Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:08 PM PST The CEO of Delta Air Lines on Friday declared his company's "values are not for sale" after Georgia lawmakers retaliated against the airline for cutting ties with the National Rifle Association in the wake of last month's Florida school shooting. Bastian explained the decision to employees a day after Georgia lawmakers passed a tax bill that effectively punishes the airline for rescinding the discount for NRA members to travel to the group's annual meeting. |

Steven Mnuchin Doesn't Want People To See Video Of His Heckled UCLA Talk Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:56 PM PST Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin doesn't want you to see what happened when he spoke at the University of California, Los Angeles on Monday. The Burkle Center for International Relations invited Mnuchin to speak with "Marketplace" public radio host Kai Ryssdal for an open discussion on the Trump administration, its policies and the U.S. economy at the university. The public event went so poorly, however, that Mnuchin asked UCLA not to publish any video of it, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. |

Leaked Emails Appear To Show A Top Trump Fundraiser Abusing His Power Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:39 PM PST Emails and documents an anonymous group leaked to HuffPost this week appear to show a Los Angeles lawyer asking for more than $80 million to scuttle a Department of Justice investigation into a multibillion-dollar scandal involving Van Gogh paintings, the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street," the prime minister of Malaysia — and the lawyer's husband, a Republican National Committee deputy finance chair Elliott Broidy, trying to use his influence with the Trump administration to help. Broidy and his wife, attorney Robin Rosenzweig, deny any wrongdoing. "It's definitely a hack," Rosenzweig said of the emails, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. |

NATO says Russian warnings against allies 'unacceptable' Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:30 PM PST By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin's warnings to NATO allies are "unacceptable" and do not help efforts to calm tensions, the alliance said on Friday, a day after the Russian leader announced an array of new nuclear weapons. Already angry at NATO's expansion eastwards into its old Soviet sphere of influence, Putin said in a speech on Thursday that any attack on Moscow's allies would be regarded as an attack on Russia itself and draw an immediate response. While it was unclear which ally Putin had in mind, the U.S.-led NATO said the speech, one of the Russian leader's most bellicose in years, did not help calm tensions that have surged since Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea four years ago. |
US mother breaks down at New York killer nanny trial Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:33 PM PST The devastated mother of two young children killed by their New York nanny broke down on the stand Friday, yelling that the former caregiver was "evil" and a "liar" before twice fleeing the court room. Yoselyn Ortega is on trial for murdering Lucia, six, and Leo, two, with a kitchen knife in the bathroom of their Upper West Side apartment on October 25, 2012. Marina Krim, 41, tearfully fled the stand twice while testifying for a second day -- once under cross-examination by the defense after becoming increasingly agitated by the questions -- and again while being questioned by the prosecution. |

Trump's Tariff Can't Start A Trade War Because It Started Years Ago Posted: 03 Mar 2018 01:13 PM PST President Donald Trump's announcement that he would place tariffs on steel and aluminum imports has economists cringing. Conservative Republicans are dusting off the principles they learned in Econ 101, liberal Nobel laureate Paul Krugman is warning that Trump will start an economically destructive trade war, and prominent world leaders are vowing to prove Krugman right. On Friday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker threatened to retaliate against "unfair" U.S. tariffs with new levies on American motorcycles, bourbon and blue jeans. |

Amandla Stenberg Passed On ‘Black Panther’ To Make Way For Darker-Skinned Actors Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:33 PM PST Amandla Stenberg put a lot of thought into not entering the Marvel cinematic universe. Last week, "The Hunger Games" actress explained to CBC Arts that she was in the running for a lead part in "Black Panther" but decided to back out because she didn't want to take the role from a darker-skinned actor. The biracial actress said she put a lot of thought into rejecting a role in which she'd play a purely African woman. |
Russia's Navy Might Be Modernizing—But It's Overstretched Posted: 03 Mar 2018 06:17 PM PST President Vladimir Putin's speech on the first of March revealed a whole panoply of new nuclear capabilities, from cruise missiles with nearly unlimited range to unmanned undersea vehicles also operating with extraordinary range, together with unprecedented speed and depth capabilities. Along the maritime periphery of Russia, tensions continue to escalate. Russian warships sortied en masse into the Baltic Sea on 20 February as part of a readiness drill, and in January, Russian news reported that a U.S. drone made a long-range intelligence-gathering sortie along Russia's Black Sea border in the vicinity of Kerch, Sochi, and the Crimea. |

Fractured Ethiopia parliament endorses emergency decree Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:28 PM PST Ethiopia's parliament approved a nationwide state of emergency on Friday despite unusual opposition from some lawmakers, in the latest sign of fractures within the all-powerful ruling coalition. The council of ministers made the emergency declaration last month, one day after Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn's surprise resignation amid a growing political crisis and divisions in the ruling party. The six-month decree, which required approval from two-thirds of lawmakers, has been condemned by several of Ethiopia's allies including the United States and the European Union. |

Brennan responded that he was rattled by the president's strange focus on Baldwin the morning after Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted of his nation's nuclear capabilities to strike anywhere in the world, including the U.S. A simulated video presented by Putin appeared to depict next-generation nuclear missiles striking Florida. |
