US tech giant Nvidia in biggest ever deal with $6.9bn takeover of Israel's Mellanox

US tech giant Nvidia in biggest ever deal with $6.9bn takeover of Israel's MellanoxThe US computer giant Nvidia has made its biggest-ever acquisition with a $6.9bn (£5.3bn) takeover of Israel's Mellanox. The deal represents a strategic shift towards cloud computing for Nvidia after a share crash at the end of last year triggered by the end of the cryptocurrency boom and slow sales of its computer game graphics chips. Nvidia is best known for graphical processors, which are used in video and game production but have also become surprisingly proficient at intensive computing tasks such as cryptocurrency mining and artificial intelligence. Its shares rose ten-fold between 2016 and last September amid booming interest in AI and the Bitcoin bubble, but lost half their value at the end of last year as cryptocurrency mining became unprofitable and sales of the graphics cards it sells to video gamers slowed, particularly in China. Mellanox's networking technology is used within data centres, the remote stacks of powerful computers used by companies to store and process vast amounts of information. Its technology transfers data at high speeds within and between the data centres, which are increasingly in demand due to the rise of cloud computing services in which companies rent server space from Amazon, Microsoft and others. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, said: "The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world's data centers." The two companies have previously worked together on the world's two most powerful supercomputers, the IBM-built systems used by the US government. Nvidia reportedly beat away competition from Intel for the acquisition. Intel has also been leaning more heavily on its data centre business as the market for personal computers shrinks. It is by far the company's biggest acquisition to date, worth almost 20 times the $367m it paid for modem company Icera in 2011. Shares in Nvidia rose by more than 5pc on news of the deal.

Trump budget seeks 5 percent cut in non-defense spending: OMBThe Republican president's proposal, slated for release at 11:30 a.m. (1530 GMT) on the Office of Management and Budget's website, is expected to be the first volley in this year's bitter funding fight with Congress, which has control over federal purse strings. Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate immediately panned Trump's request for $8.6 billion to build a wall on the southern border with Mexico, reported by Reuters earlier on Sunday. Congress' refusal to grant him the funds led Trump to declare a national emergency so he could redirect funds approved for other purposes to the project.

"Sterling has been knocked back on the news that Cox is not throwing all of his weight behind last night's amendment to the Withdrawal Plan," said Jane Foley, currency strategist at Rabobank International.

Elon Musk shoots back at US regulators, accusing them of 'retaliation and censorship'

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 11:01 PM PDT

Elon Musk shoots back at US regulators, accusing them of 'retaliation and censorship'Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk shot back against US financial regulators on Monday, arguing that his recent tweet about his company's production numbers did not violate a previous fraud settlement and that he cannot be held in contempt. Lawyers for Mr Musk said that his "single, immaterial" tweet to more than 24 million Twitter followers, claiming that Tesla would produce around 500,000 electric cars in 2019, complied with the communications policy his company has been forced to adopt.  The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had asked a court in New York City to hold Musk in contempt, saying his tweet in February violated a fraud settlement from September which barred him from sharing material information about Tesla on social media without the company's pre-approval. Bur Mr Musk's lawyers argued in a court filing that the SEC was exceeding its power in attempting to hold him in contempt, saying its action "smacks of retaliation and censorship". "This contempt action, following Musk's sincerely-held criticism of the SEC on 60 Minutes [a US TV show], also reflects concerning and unprecedented overreach on the part of the SEC," the filing said. In December, Musk said in an interview with the US news programme 60 Minutes that: "I do not have respect for the SEC." The settlement between Musk, Tesla and the SEC resolved an SEC lawsuit over claims Mr Musk made on Twitter in August that he had "funding secured" to take Tesla private at $420 per share. The SEC called those tweets "false and misleading", and a deal never materialized. As part of that settlement, Musk stepped down as the company's chairman and he and Tesla agreed to pay $20m each (£15m) in fines. The renewed public battle between Tesla's chief executive and the top US securities regulator adds pressure on Mr Musk, the public face of Tesla, who is struggling to make the company profitable after cutting the price of its Model 3 sedan to $35,000. Tesla has backed off a plan to close all its US stores and said it will instead raise prices of its higher-end vehicles by about 3 percent on average. In the filing, Mr Musk's lawyers said his tweet was a "proud and optimistic restatement of publicly disclosed information." Mr Musk corrected his tweet four hours later to say that the "annualized production rate" at year-end 2019 would probably be about 500,000, with deliveries expected to be about 400,000. Moreover, Mr Musk has exhibited self-censorship in dramatically reducing the volume of tweets since the settlement, they wrote, adding that the SEC's request, if granted, would raise free speech issues. "This self-censorship is reflective of his commitment to adhering to the Order and avoiding unnecessary disputes with the SEC," they wrote in the filing. Mr Musk called the regulator the "Shortseller Enrichment Commission" on Twitter after the settlement, and tweeted that "something is broken with SEC oversight" just one day after the agency started pursuing the contempt order. Legal experts have said the SEC could now pursue multiple avenues, including a higher fine, imposing further restrictions on Mr Musk's activities or removing him from Tesla's board or helm. Tesla published a new communications policy in December for senior executives as part of the settlement. It called for Tesla's general counsel and a newly designated in-house securities law attorney to pre-approve any written statements about Tesla that could be material. A disclosure controls committee, made up of board members Brad Buss, Antonio Gracias and James Murdoch, was tasked with overseeing compliance with the new policy.

'Tomorrow we'll be in paradise': Islamic State followers speak from besieged enclave"Servants of God, keep reciting your prayers and ask for forgiveness," the loudspeaker of a beaten up van cries as it tours the ramshackle camp in the video. "Repent and ask God for forgiveness, oh servants of God, for perhaps the almighty will find a way out for us." The video's tone is a far cry from the jihadist group's earlier productions, which boasted of victories in taking over around a third of Syria and Iraq at its height in 2014 and summoned followers around the world to join a growing society. While acknowledging its military setbacks in the face of a global campaign against it, Islamic State uses the new film to urge followers to maintain their faith in IS even in adversity.

Venezuela blackout has killed 21 people, opposition leaders say

Venezuela blackout has killed 21 people, opposition leaders saySix of the dead are babies and numbers will rise, opposition sayOpposition to hold emergency debate as power cut continues An injured man is carried by paramedics inside Miguel Perez Carreno hospital in Caracas during the worst power outage in Venezuela's history. Photograph: Matias Delacroix/AFP/Getty Images At least 21 people – six of them babies – have so far died as a result of Venezuela's shattering nationwide blackout, opposition leaders have claimed as they prepared to hold an emergency debate on the crisis in the capital, Caracas. "These are not just numbers, these are Venezuelan lives that would not have been lost were it not for the ineptitude of Nicolás Maduro," tweeted José Manuel Olivares, a doctor and opposition politician who is monitoring its impact on Venezuela's already debilitated healthcare system. According to Olivares's count, 15 patients died in the Manuel Núñez Tovar hospital in the north-eastern city of Maturín after the lights went out there following Thursday's outage, which has yet to be resolved. Two newborn babies died in the Hospital de los Magallanes de Catia in Caracas, one of which was suffering from severe malnutrition. Olivares told the Guardian the number of deaths would rise as the true extent of the calamity became clearer. The power cut meant it had still not been possible to communicate with many hospitals. On Monday morning, the opposition leader Juan Guaidó – who most western governments now recognize as Venezuela's legitimate interim leader – hit out at Maduro, who retains the support of China and Russia. "Our people are still living with the threat of new blackouts while these cynics lie and laugh at pain and death," Guaidó tweeted. Venezuela's defence minister, Vladimir Padrino López, said the government was "working tirelessly" to resolve the crisis, which it has blamed on a US-backed conspiracy designed to topple Maduro and bring Guaidó to power. There were reports that electricity had returned to some parts of Caracas while the Chavista governor of the neighbouring state of Miranda claimed electricity had returned to 80% of his territory. Maduro, who has made just one public appearance since the crisis began, claimed progress was being made towards "reconnection". "With intense work, love and resistance we will prevail," he tweeted on Monday. However, experts fear the crisis – which many attribute to poor maintenance and corruption – is far from being resolved. Schools and workplaces were again ordered shut on Monday. "In my house we haven't had any light since Thursday. There is no water, no [phone] signal, no light, no nothing," said Anna Ferrera, a student activist from eastern Caracas. Ferrera said that in the early hours of Monday an electrical substation had exploded not far from her home. "None of us have ever lived through something like this – not my generation, not my parents, not my grandmother. They say this is like living in a war."

Trump condemned for budget cutting welfare while boosting spending for border wall and military: ‘This is for the billionaire class’

Trump condemned for budget cutting welfare while boosting spending for border wall and military: 'This is for the billionaire class'Donald Trump has been accused of proposing a budget for the "military industrial complex and the billionaire class", after the White House released details of a plan that would cut spending on welfare and education while boosting money for the military and a border wall. The $4.7 trillion (£3.5 trillion) budget proposal, which is all but certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and once again put the president on a collision course with congress over his demand for a border fence, called for an overhaul of Medicare, Medicaid and other expensive social programmes. It was a similar demand – rejected by Democrats – that recently led to a five-week government shutdown after the president refused to agree a spending plan that did not include such a measure.

Singapore blocks all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from leaving or landing

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 09:28 PM PDT

Singapore blocks all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from leaving or landingAustralia and Singapore suspended operations of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in and out of Changi airport on Tuesday, and Indonesia and China grounded their fleets of the US planemaker' s latest model after it suffered a second fatal crash in less than five months. The scare has wiped billions of dollars off the market value of the world's biggest planemaker, as the Boeing Co share closed 5 percent down on Monday having fallen by as much as 13.5 percent at one point. The United States says will mandate that Boeing Co implement design changes by April that have been in the works for months for the 737 MAX 8 fleet. An Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Nairobi crashed minutes after take-off on Sunday, killing all 157 aboard and raising questions about the safety of the new variant of the industry workhorse, one of which also crashed in Indonesia in October, killing 189 people. Boeing confirmed the Federal Aviation Administration's announcement late Monday that it will deploy a software upgrade across the 737 MAX 8 fleet "in the coming weeks" as pressure mounted. Two US senators called the fleet's immediate grounding and a rising number of airlines said they would voluntarily ground their fleets. The company confirmed it had for several months "been developing a flight control software enhancement for the 737 MAX, designed to make an already safe aircraft even safer." Boeing did not reference Sunday's Ethiopian Airlines crash in connection to the software upgrade. The statement did express the company's condolences to the relatives of the 157 people who died, however. The FAA said the changes will "provide reduced reliance on procedures associated with required pilot memory items." The FAA also said Boeing will "update training requirements and flight crew manuals to go with the design change" to an automated protection system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System or MCAS. The changes also include MCAS activation and angle of attack signal enhancements. The FAA said in the notice made public that external reports are drawing similarities between the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia. "However, this investigation has just begun and to date we have not been provided data to draw any conclusions or take any actions," according to the Continued Airworthiness Notification to the International Community for Boeing 737 MAX 8 operators. US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao told reporters regulators would not hesitate to act if they find a safety issue. "If the FAA identifies an issue that affects safety, the department will take immediate and appropriate action," Chao told reporters. "I want people to be assured that we take these incidents, these accidents very seriously." Boeing's top executive told employees on Monday he was confident in the safety of the US manufacturer's top-selling 737 MAX aircraft. The company added that it was "still early" in the Ethiopian Airlines investigation. Reuters and other media outlets have reported that Boeing has for months planned design changes after the Lion Air crash in Indonesia but the FAA notice was the first public confirmation. Canada's transport minister also said he will not hesitate to act once the cause of the crash is known. Two Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Richard Blumenthal called for the immediate grounding of the aircraft, as did Paul Hudson, the president of FlyersRights.org and a member of the FAA Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee. Blumenthal said the planes "should be grounded until the FAA can assure American travelers that these planes are safe." Sara Nelson, the president of Association of Flight Attendants union, wrote the FAA on Monday asking it to conduct a comprehensive review and "take steps immediately to address concerns and ensure the safety of the 737 MAX fleet." The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are both at the crash site in Ethiopia, Chao said. Boeing's shares fell as much as 10 percent on the prospect that two such crashes in such a short time could reveal flaws in its new plane. Boeing, whose shares closed down 5.3 percent at $400.01 in the heaviest trading trade since July 2013. The 737 line, which has flown for more than 50 years, is the world's best-selling modern passenger aircraft and viewed as one of the industry's most reliable. China ordered its airlines to ground the jet, a move followed by Australia Indonesia, Singapore and Ethiopia. Other airlines, from North America to the Middle East, kept flying the 737 MAX 8 on Monday after Boeing said it was safe. Boeing's 737 MAX is the newest version of a jet that has been a fixture of passenger travel for decades and the cash cow of the world's largest aircraft maker, competing against Airbus SE's A320neo family of single-aisle jetliners. The 737 family is considered one of the industry's most reliable aircraft. The MAX has a bigger and more efficient engine compared with earlier 737 models. Boeing rolled out the fuel-efficient MAX 8 in 2017 as an update to the already redesigned 50-year-old 737, and had delivered 350 MAX jets out of the total order tally of 5,011 aircraft by the end of January. Actor Jussie Smollett indicted on 16 counts of lying to Chicago police(This March 8 story has been refiled to correct amount of alleged payment by Smollett to $3,500 instead of $35,000 in paragraph 8) By Suzannah Gonzales CHICAGO (Reuters) - Television actor Jussie Smollett, arrested last month on a single charge of perpetrating a hate-crime hoax, has been newly indicted on 16 felony counts of falsely reporting to police that he was assaulted by two strangers shouting racist and homophobic slurs. The indictment, returned by a Cook County grand jury on Thursday and made public on Friday, greatly expands on the legal jeopardy faced by Smollett, whose story of being attacked in Chicago by supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn suspicion since it first surfaced in late January. Smollett, 36, who is black and openly gay and plays a gay musician on the Fox network hip-hop drama "Empire," was charged last month in a single-count criminal complaint with making a false report to police, defined under Illinois law as a form of disorderly conduct.

The renewed public battle between Tesla's CEO and the SEC adds pressure on Musk, the public face of the electric vehicle-maker who is struggling to make it profitable after cutting the price of its Model 3 sedan to $35,000. Flight to Malaysia forced to turn around after mother leaves baby at airport

Flight to Malaysia forced to turn around after mother leaves baby at airportA young mother on a flight from Saudi Arabia to Malaysia reportedly had the shock of her life when she realised she had accidentally left her baby behind in the airport terminal.  The Saudi Arabian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur returned to its gate in King Abdulaziz airport, Jeddah after the panicked woman alerted cabin crew that she had forgotten to bring her child.  A video of the pilot requesting Air Traffic Control in Arabic and English for permission to return has gone viral on social media.  "May God be with us. Can we come back or what?" he is heard asking. One of the surprised controllers can then be heard telling a colleague: "This flight is requesting to come back…a passenger forgot her baby in the waiting area, the poor thing." He then adds: "OK, head back to the gate. This is totally a new one for us!" The Gulf News reported that the bizarre incident took place over the weekend, implying that the plane was already in the air. However, some reports have suggested that the flight had not yet taken off, and the sequence of events is unclear from the video.  The story ended happily, with the mother and baby reunited.  The circumstances that led to her forgetting the baby are not known, but it would not be the first high-profile story of a parent unwittingly leaving a child behind.  Former British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha had a heart-stopping moment in 2012 when they realised they had left a Buckinghamshire pub without their daughter Nancy, 8. After meeting friends at the pub, they left in separate cars, only to realise at their destination that Nancy was not in either of them.  When the prime minister's wife rushed back distraught to the venue, she found her daughter safe and well and helping the staff.    Sign up for your essential, twice-daily briefing from The Telegraph with our free Front Page newsletter.
