Posted: 04 Mar 2019 10:46 AM PST Hoda Muthana, who left Alabama at the age of 19 to join the terror group Isis in Syria, said she is "not a threat to America" and wants to return to the US as her lawyer battles her case in court. Speaking to CBS News in northern Syria, Ms Muthana claimed to be a US citizen, rejecting denials from Donald Trump's administration, while noting the son she had with a now-deceased Isis fighter does not hold citizenship to any country. Ms Muthana has been held by Kurdish forces allied with the US since January, when she turned herself in amid the caliphate's decline. |
Ex-NY mayor Bloomberg rules out run for US president in 2020 Posted: 05 Mar 2019 03:15 PM PST Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, the centrist billionaire Democrat who positioned himself as a potential challenger to Donald Trump, said Tuesday he would not run for president in 2020. "I believe I would defeat Donald Trump in a general election. Some have told me that to win the Democratic nomination, I would need to change my views to match the polls," the 77-year-old said, acknowledging the leftward tilt among many of the dozen major Democrats already in the race. |

In #MeToo era, Ford lauded on left and right as honest and brave Posted: 05 Mar 2019 06:27 PM PST Before the Senate hearing on Thursday, Ford had never appeared on camera, and was only depicted in news media reports with a grainy photo lifted from the internet. Thousands of conservatives took to social media to accuse Ford of lying to bring down Kavanaugh, who angrily and tearfully denied her accusations in a day of dramatic, high-stakes testimony from both the accused and the accuser. While Republican senators depicted her testimony as part of a partisan attack orchestrated by Democrats, they -- and Kavanaugh -- were careful not to attack Ford personally. |

Trump lashes out at 'crazy' opponents as pressure mounts Posted: 05 Mar 2019 12:41 PM PST President Donald Trump branded Democratic opponents "crazy" and guilty of overreach Tuesday in a fevered response to a huge new probe of his alleged crimes. Trump's exclamation mark -- and capital letter -- laden outbursts indicated a rising temperature in a White House under assault from multiple directions. Democrats, who took control of the House of Representatives last November, suspect Trump of a slew of potentially impeachable offenses, including obstruction of justice and abuse of office. |

Body language: The Russian science keeping North Korea's dead leaders looking fresh Posted: 05 Mar 2019 03:51 PM PST Kim laid a wreath outside Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum in the Vietnamese capital on Saturday, after the conclusion of his shortened summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. Inside the dark interior of the mausoleum, the embalmed corpse of Vietnam's founding father lies displayed in a glass coffin for a steady stream of tourists who silently shuffle by. In Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un's grandfather and father are on similar display in the loftily named Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a monument to the cult of personality that surrounds North Korea's ruling family. |

Guaido Warns Supporters of Long Struggle After Aid Gambit Failed Posted: 04 Mar 2019 12:44 PM PST Obviously not," Guaido told supporters at a Caracas rally. U.S. East Coast digs out from snow, braces for bitter cold Posted: 04 Mar 2019 01:43 PM PST New England dug out from more than a foot of snow on Monday that snarled commutes and canceled flights, although New York City was spared the worst of the late-winter storm, which was expected to be followed by bitter cold in the days ahead. A band of winter weather stretching from Maryland to Maine dumped 15 inches (38 cm) of snow overnight on downtown Boston and some 5 inches (13 cm) on Central Park in the heart of New York City, National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chenard reported. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio took the rare step of shutting the city's massive public school system, and New Jersey Transit canceled about a dozen trains on its sprawling commuter system. |
Three 'explosive devices' found in London Posted: 05 Mar 2019 10:40 AM PST British counter terrorism officers are investigating three "small improvised explosive devices" believed capable of starting small fires that were found in separate locations in London on Tuesday. The suspicious packages containing padded envelopes were found at an office block next to Heathrow Airport, the post room at Waterloo station, and at offices near London City Airport in the east of the capital, according to Scotland Yard. "The packages -- all A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags -- have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive devices," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement. |

Eli Lilly seeks to quell drug price anger with cheaper insulin Posted: 04 Mar 2019 11:26 AM PST Major drugmakers including Lilly, a leading producer of insulin, have come under fire from patients and lawmakers over the rising cost of the life-saving medication used to treat diabetes. Lilly's rebranded product will be called Insulin Lispro, while Humalog, which makes $3 billion in annual sales, will remain available for those wishing to access it through existing insurance plans. The cost of insulin for treating type 1 diabetes in the United States has nearly doubled over a five-year period, leading some patients to put their own health at risk by rationing the medication. |

Roger Stone Lawyers Failed to Tell Judge About His Book Ahead of Gag Order Ruling Posted: 04 Mar 2019 03:40 PM PST Stone's legal team responded Monday to U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson's demand for an explanation as to why she had not been told about the political operative's latest polemic, while she was considering whether to curb his public commentary to avoid tainting the jury pool before trial. Stone's four lawyers wrote that "it did not occur to counsel" to tell the judge about their client's prior writings. Stone's book -- The Myth of Russian Collusion -- had gone to the printer in late January, they said. |
