Oil tankers hit in new 'attack' in Gulf of Oman

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:20 AM PDT

Oil tankers hit in new 'attack' in Gulf of OmanThe US Navy said it is helping the crew of two oil tankers after a "reported attack" in the Gulf of Oman, just weeks after the US accused Iran of attacking other oil vessels in the same area. Two tankers were reportedly damaged by explosions early on Thursday morning but shipping sources said their crews were safe.  Details were scarce but Tradewinds, a shipping magazine, reported that one of the ships had been hit by a torpedo.  The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKTMO), a unit of the Royal Navy, said it was aware of an incident in the area. "UK and its partners are currently investigating," UKTMO said.  The alleged attack came just weeks after the US accused Iran of sabotaging two oil tankers and two smaller ships near the Emirati port of Fujairah using naval mines on May 12. Iran denied responsibility for the attack.  John Bolton, the US national security advisor, accused Iran of being behind previous attacks Credit: REUTERS/Joshua Roberts/File Photo The latest incident comes amid weeks of heightened tensions between the US and Iran.  The US has been building up forces in the Middle East since early May, when the White House said it had evidence that Iran was preparing attacks against American troops in the region. Since then the US has sent an aircraft carrier, 1,500 additional troops, a bomber task force and several batteries of missile interceptors to the region.  Donald Trump has repeatedly said he is not looking to provoke a war with Iran but the UK and other allies fear that the two sides could stumble into an unintended conflict.  Meanwhile, Shinzo Abe, the prime minister of Japan, is visiting Iran. The trip is officially commemorating 90 years of diplomatic relations between Iran and Japan but Mr Abe has also said he is eager to try to calm tensions between the two sides.

Second Ebola victim dies in Uganda as disease spreads

Second Ebola victim dies in Uganda as disease spreadsA grandmother in Uganda has died from Ebola, health officials said Thursday, the second fatality in the country since a major outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo crossed the border. Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng announced Wednesday that Uganda had recorded three cases of Ebola in the first known cross-border spread since an outbreak began in eastern DRC last August. The patients were from a family of six, including four children, that travelled to DRC to care for a relative and later attended his burial after he died of Ebola. Upon returning to Uganda two brothers - aged five and three - and the 50-year-old grandmother tested positive for the virus, and the family was quarantined in Bwera, a border town in the country's west. The older boy died Tuesday - the first Ebola fatality in Uganda since the start of the DRC outbreak that has seen more than 2,000 cases recorded, around two-thirds of which have been fatal. Ebola | Health workers attacked amid mistrust from communities A health ministry official said Thursday the grandmother had also died overnight. "The deceased has been confirmed as the grandmother of the five-year-old boy who died. Both victims had attended the burial of an Ebola patient in DRC, but returned to Uganda," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The official said arrangements were being made to bury the woman in Kasese, the western district bordering Congo where her grandson was laid to rest Wednesday. About 25,000 people cross the district's main border crossing of Mpwonde at a daily basis, according to the DRC health ministry. The World Health Organization also confirmed the woman had succumbed to the haemorrhagic virus. WHO said 27 others in contact with the family had been placed under close monitoring. Uganda's health ministry said frontline health workers were due to be vaccinated Friday with a new drug designed to protect them against the virus.

Trump news: House votes to take Barr and McGahn to court, as president launches bizarre tirade over European tourism

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 12:42 PM PDT

Trump news: House votes to take Barr and McGahn to court, as president launches bizarre tirade over European tourismDonald Trump has tweeted an article about a boom in European tourism as a means of continuing his attack on the US Federal Reserve, arguing domestic interest rates are too high and attacking its policy of "ridiculous quantitative tightening", declaring: "They don't have a clue!"This comes after the House Judiciary Committee announced it had struck a deal with the Justice Department to gain access to redacted interview notes from FBI special counsel Robert Mueller, including "first-hand accounts of misconduct" relating to President Trump, in exchange for not immediately pursing a contempt of Congress action against attorney general William Barr.A full session of the House of Representatives will still vote as planned on Tuesday on a resolution making it easier to sue the administration and potential witnesses if they refuse to comply with congressional subpoenas, as ex-White House counsel Don McGahn did when asked to give testimony before the Judiciary Committee on whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.Meanwhile, Mr Trump and Joe Biden assailed each other during overlapping visits to Iowa on Tuesday, previewing what the country might get in next year's election if Mr Biden becomes his party's nominee.Even before he left the White House, the president unleashed a series of schoolyard taunts, declaring that "Joe Biden is a dummy." Mr Biden quickly retorted that the president is "an existential threat to this country."The back-and-forth laid bare the rising political stakes for each, even with Election Day 2020 still about 17 months away. Mr Trump has zeroed in on Mr Biden as a potential threat to his re-election chances and is testing themes to beat him back. Mr Biden, meanwhile, is campaigning as a front-runner, relishing the one-on-one fight with Mr Trump while making sure he doesn't ignore the demands of the Democratic primary. The former vice president hit Mr Trump on the economy — an issue the president often promotes as his chief strength in a time of low unemployment."I hope his presence here will be a clarifying event because Iowa farmers have been crushed by his tariffs toward China," Mr Biden said. "It's really easy to be tough when someone else absorbs the pain, farmers and manufacturers."The Associated Press contributed to this report. Please allow a moment for our liveblog to load

The F-22 Raptor Has One Problem That Won't Ever Be Solved

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 06:00 PM PDT

The F-22 Raptor Has One Problem That Won't Ever Be SolvedThe time and money needed to develop and build a new F-22s would take money away from PCA and other Air Force program that are more relevant to the 2030 fight. Even an export version of the F-22—should one have been developed—would have used up scarce resources. "The costs to restart production of the F-22 would be extensive even with the involvement of foreign partners," the report states. "Just as F-22 production would compete for fiscal and contractor resources with other Air Force programs, any F-22 export would compete with FMS customers' resources as well, including countries already committed to F-35 purchases. Most nations are not likely to have the resources available for procurement of an export F-22, which extremely limits the ability of FMS to reduce the costs associated with restarting production."A 2017 Pentagon report to Congress detailing production retail costs for Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor show that reviving the powerful stealth air superiority fighter would be prohibitively expensive. Moreover, it would take so long to reconstitute the production line that it would not be until the mid to late 2020s before the first "new" F-22s would have flown. By that time, the F-22 would be increasingly challenged by enemy—Russian and Chinese—capabilities.(This first appeared last year.)

Oil prices surge after suspected attacks on tankers

Oil prices surge after suspected attacks on tankersWorld oil prices surged Thursday on reports that two tankers had been attacked in the Gulf of Oman, worsening frayed tensions in the crude-rich Middle East region, analysts said. The surge in oil prices boosted share prices of energy companies, while global stock markets also won some support from the prospect of US interest rate cuts this year. Rising hopes of a rate cut has helped to offset lingering tensions over the long-running trade war between Washington and Beijing.

Biden Hardens China Stance: U.S. Needs to ‘Get Tough’ on Beijing

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:18 AM PDT

Biden Hardens China Stance: U.S. Needs to 'Get Tough' on BeijingFormer vice president Joe Biden plans to announce a new, hardened stance on China Tuesday, when he will tell Iowans that the country is "a real threat" to U.S. interests."We are in a competition with China. We need to get tough with China," Biden plans to say at a campaign event in Iowa according to prepared remarks, which add that China engages in "cheating" and "abusive behavior" economically.Biden, who chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before becoming Barack Obama's vice president, raised eyebrows by downplaying the influence of the world's second-largest economy earlier this year when he said "they're not competition for us.""China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man," Biden said at a campaign stop in Iowa in April. "They can't figure out how they're going to deal with the corruption that exists within the system. They're not bad folks, folks."Although Biden's planned Tuesday remarks are harshly critical of President Trump's approach to China as a "damaging and erratic trade war," they echo the president's frequent talking point that China is a threat, calling the country "a serious challenge to us, and in some areas a real threat.""China is pressing its advantage all over the world," Biden will say. "And every single step that Donald Trump is taking is only exacerbating the challenge."The White House raised tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports from 10 to 25 percent last month after accusing the country of reneging on the terms of a trade deal it had previously agreed to. The U.S. also currently has a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese high-tech products.Biden and others have criticized the tariffs, saying American consumers and businesses are eating the cost, not China's economy. The leading Democratic presidential candidate says his solution involves a new "initiative in scientific research, cutting-edge infrastructure, and a modern workforce that will help American workers and entrepreneurs compete and win.""We need to rally more than half the world's economy to hold China to account for their cheating. And get a chorus of voices speaking out on China's repression," Biden will say.

9/11 victims bill passes House panel after Jon Stewart's plea receives standing ovation

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 12:56 PM PDT

9/11 victims bill passes House panel after Jon Stewart's plea receives standing ovationThe House Judiciary Committee has unanimously passed a bill which would permanently reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund on Wednesday. The decision comes the day after comedian Jon Stewart appeared before the committee with an impassioned testimony in support of the Fund. The bill is a response to a February announcement that future payouts from the Fund would be cut by as much as 70 percent to offset surging claims from those who are ill, as well as from the families of those who have died already. In a speech that quickly drew praise online and elsewhere, Mr Stewart called the House's involvement "shameful," calling attention to how few members of congress had appeared to hear him and meet the many 9/11 first responders accompanying him."None of these people want to be here," Mr Stewart said of those behind him during the speech. "But they are, and they're not here for themselves… They're here to continue fighting for what's right."The fund was established in 2011 to compensate for deaths and illnesses linked to toxic exposure at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after terrorists crashed four hijacked airliners on the morning of September 11, 2001. Mr Stewart, who has been in New York City for the extent of his career, has long been a champion for 9/11 first responders. The bill will now go to the floor for a full vote in the House of Representatives, where it is likely to pass. It's unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will take up the bill in the Senate, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Wednesday that he was "imploring, pleading, even begging" the Republican to bring the bill to the floor as soon as it passes in the House."We will reach the point soon, most likely this year, when more will have died from 9/11-related illnesses than on 9/11 itself," Mr Schumer said Wednesday. "I say to Leader McConnell: This is not politics. This is not a game. These are our heroes, American heroes, who are suffering and need our help."

New leak gives us our best look yet at the Pixel 4 design

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:50 PM PDT

New leak gives us our best look yet at the Pixel 4 designWith the official unveiling of Google's highly-anticipated Pixel 4 lineup now just a few months away, a number of high-profile leaks have recently shed a bit more light on what we can expect to see out of Google's next-gen smartphone models. And given how impressive Google's Pixel 3 line was, it stands to reason that the Pixel 4 will live up to the hype and will offer a premium user experience positioned to rival the iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S10 series.Design wise, recent renders have revealed that the Pixel 4 will likely feature a square camera module on the back, similar to many of the iPhone 11 rumors we've seen over the past few weeks. More recently, the folks over at Unbox Therapy managed to get their hands on metallic molds of both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. The molds are typically used by case manufacturers looking to get a head start on case design and are often based on reliable information from the supply chain. The video below provides us with a good look at the overall Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL form factor. And again, the most interesting takeaway is the square camera module on the back which, according to some rumors we've seen, may include 3 cameras. Also of note is a report that the Pixel 4 lineup may ditch the unseemly notch that appeared on the Pixel 3. Consequently, the Pixel 4 design will boast a more prominent forehead similar, though perhaps smaller, than what we saw on the Pixel 2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQMSno11ho4Other notable tidbits include the fact that the Pixel 4 line won't include a physical fingerprint sensor. Consequently, Google appears ready to embrace facial recognition as an unlocking scheme. In turn, it will certainly be interesting to see how face unlock on the Pixel 4 measures up against Apple's Face ID.

Huawei files to trademark mobile OS around the world after U.S. banLIMA/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's Huawei has applied to trademark its "Hongmeng" operating system (OS) in at least nine countries and Europe, data from a U.N. body shows, in a sign it may be deploying a back-up plan in key markets as U.S. sanctions threaten its business model. The move comes after the Trump administration put Huawei on a blacklist last month that barred it from doing business with U.S. tech companies such as Alphabet Inc, whose Android OS is used in Huawei's phones. A senior U.S. official on Thursday said Huawei's clients should be asking themselves if the Chinese firm can meet its commitments given its dependence on U.S. companies.
