The Latest: Saudi Arabia says it shot down Yemen droneSaudi Arabia says it has shot down a drone launched into the kingdom by Yemen's Iranian-allied Houthi rebels. The Houthi drone attacks have picked up amid tensions between Iran and the U.S. in the Persian Gulf as Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers unravels. President Donald Trump says Iran still takes his threats seriously even after he decided against approving strikes in retaliation for Tehran's downing of a more than $100 million American surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ocasio-Cortez: Biden ‘Not a Pragmatic Choice’

Ocasio-Cortez: Biden 'Not a Pragmatic Choice'Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says it would not be "pragmatic" for Democrats to choose former vice president Joe Biden as their 2020 presidential nominee."I think he's not a pragmatic choice," the Bronx progressive said in an interview released Wednesday by Vogue. "If you pick the perfect candidate like Joe Biden to win that guy in the diner, the cost will make you lose because you will depress turnout as well. And that's exactly what happened [in] 2016. We picked the logically fitting candidate, but that candidate did not inspire the turnout that we needed."She punted on the question of which Democrat in the party's large presidential field she would endorse, remarking that "we haven't even had a debate yet.""You can be radical and you can be respectful — and I know that many people may think that that's not cool," she said.Biden still leads his fellow contenders for the Democratic nomination by double digits in polling of the race. Senator Bernie Sanders is currently second, followed by Senator Elizabeth Warren in third.

Death Match: U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat vs. Air Force F-15 Eagle (Who Wins)?

Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:08 AM PDT

Death Match: U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat vs. Air Force F-15 Eagle (Who Wins)?Having spent his entire career flying USAF F-15Cs in Europe, Robert "Scout" Winebrenner never flew the Tomcat but during the 1980s he had the opportunity to fly Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) with 6th Fleet F-14s in the Mediterranean. As he explains in Issue 13 "Grumman F-14 Tomcat" of Aviation Classics magazine, innumerable discussions have been made about which was the better fighter, but although both the aircraft replaced the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 and the F-14 were built to satisfy totally different operational requirements, hence the two fighters could be more or less effective in the different missions they could have performed because of their respective strength and limitations. For instance, the F-14 was the best aircraft to defend U.S. Navy aircraft carriers against a multiple target engagement. In fact thanks to its beyond visual range (BVR) capabilities and assisted by E-2C Hawkeyes, the Tomcat could inflict severe losses to an incoming enemy bombers formation. In fact, in comparing BVR performance, the Tomcat's AWG-9 had true multiple target track and multiple target engagement with the AIM-54 Phoenix, while the Eagle did not gain a multiple target engagement capability until the late 1980s with the introduction of the AIM-120 AMRAAM. Moreover, as told by Scout, the AIM-7 Sparrow didn't possess the range of the Phoenix and the Eagle could only get one or two shots before the merge. So, due to the lack of multiple target engagement capability, the Eagle was not effective in this role.By contrast, the constant mixing of friendly and enemy aircraft typical of a Central European Defensive Counter-Air (DCA) would have rendered the Phoenix unusable in most of the engagements because of the dynamic environment faced by the fighters. Moreover, the agility deficit of the then TF-30 powered F-14 could have caused problems during the several dogfights that crews could have faced in such a complex scenario.Another role where the Tomcat could be very effective was a sweep mission were BVR missiles could be freely shot: this would be the case of a sweep ahead of a carrier-based attack package, a kind of mission where the F-14 would have been able to launch its AIM-54s without limitations due to the absence in the area of any friendly aircraft. Actually, the mission would have been also accomplished also in the case the enemy aircraft had left the area refusing to engage the Tomcats.

Mueller Sets Up Airing of Trump Probe With Risks for Both Sides

Posted: 26 Jun 2019 07:51 AM PDT

Mueller Sets Up Airing of Trump Probe With Risks for Both Sides(Bloomberg) -- Special Counsel Robert Mueller agreed to testify publicly before two House panels, setting up a dramatic hearing that promises to reinvigorate the national debate over his findings on Russian election interference and possible obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump.Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler and Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, both Democrats, announced the July 17 joint hearing on the eve of Wednesday's first Democratic presidential debate, where several of the candidates on the Miami stage are likely to remind viewers that they support an impeachment inquiry of the president. The chairmen said that Mueller, who issued his report in April, would appear in an open session and that he had agreed to the appearance under subpoenas. The session, sure to be televised live, sets up one of the most dramatic hearings of the Trump presidency -- and a confrontation between Democrats who have been pursuing investigations of the president since they took control of the House and Trump's Republican supporters who dismissed the inquiries as fishing expeditions.Until now, the White House has stymied investigations by Nadler, Schiff and other House Democratic chairmen by refusing to let present and former officials appear.Mueller said in his report that he couldn't conclude whether Trump's 2016 campaign conspired with Russia and also couldn't exonerate the president from attempting to obstruct the investigation.Trump has repeatedly denounced the inquiry and steadfastly denied any wrongdoing. The president has tweeted in the past that "after total exoneration by Robert Mueller & the Mueller Report," Democrats "want a Do Over.""It never ends," Trump said Wednesday in an interview with Fox Business Network's Maria Bartiromo. "We had no obstruction. We had no collusion."Trump also said Mueller "obviously wasn't a Trump fan."Soon after the Mueller hearing was announced, his Twitter post contained just two words: "Presidential Harassment!"Nadler on Wednesday declined to say whether there will be White House lawyers in the room during the Mueller hearing. Nadler acknowledged the possibility that the Trump administration could seek to intervene or block the hearing."They may attempt to," Nadler said. "I doubt they will succeed because Mr. Mueller is an honest man and understands that congressional subpoenas are not optional."Lawmakers from both parties are likely to tread carefully in their questioning of Mueller, a former FBI director, federal prosecutor and decorated Vietnam War veteran with a reputation for scrupulousness. He has said next to nothing about his investigation beyond the report, and made it clear that he'd prefer to say no more."Americans have demanded to hear directly from the special counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia's attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign's acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates' obstruction of the investigation into that attack," Schiff and Nadler said in a statement. In a letter accompanying the subpoenas, the chairmen tell Mueller that they understood that there were "certain sensitivities" associated with his testifying in public, including criminal investigations, some of which are continuing. That may indicate that they weren't ruling out closed-door questioning on some matters."You have also explained that you prefer for the Special Counsel's Office's written work to speak for itself," they added. "Nevertheless, the American public deserves to hear directly from you about your investigation and conclusions," they write, saying they will work with Mueller to address his legitimate concerns. The announcement comes after Republicans have taunted Nadler for not producing Mueller for a public hearing sooner. One of Trump's closest congressional allies, conservative Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows of North Carolina, warned on Fox News, "Bob Mueller had better be prepared because he will be cross-examined and the American people will see the flaws in his report."But next month's hearing carries risks for both parties. Some Democrats have taken comments by Mueller as a virtual invitation to open impeachment proceedings, a course that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has resisted so far and has said could result in a political backlash because the Republican-controlled Senate would be unlikely to follow up by removing Trump from office.Mueller has said Justice Department rules prohibit the indictment of the nation's chief executive, and "the Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting president of wrongdoing."Now, Mueller will be available to directly answer whether impeachment proceedings are what he's suggesting. If he says that, it will be difficult for Pelosi to continue putting off demands to move forward. For Republicans, their gamesmanship in heckling Democrats for not subpoenaing Mueller to this point could come home to roost. Their claims that Democrats have misinterpreted Mueller's findings could be proven false. At a Judiciary hearing in April, after the release of the Mueller report, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Doug Collins of Georgia, chastised Nadler and Democrats for not having produced Mueller as a witness.Collins said that absent an impeachment inquiry, calling Mueller himself to testify would be the best way to learn about his findings — and that the hearing should be held. The timing of the scheduled testimony comes a week before the House is set to break for a six-week summer recess, and members are not scheduled to return to Washington until early September.(Updates with Nadler comments beginning in the eleventh paragraph.)To contact the reporters on this story: John Harney in Washington at jharney2@bloomberg.net;Billy House in Washington at bhouse5@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Kevin Whitelaw at kwhitelaw@bloomberg.net, Wendy BenjaminsonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

'I told him not to' go, mother of drowned Salvadoran migrant laments

'I told him not to' go, mother of drowned Salvadoran migrant lamentsThe mother of a Salvadoran man who drowned with his young daughter while trying to reach U.S. soil, becoming a global symbol of the perils of migration, said she had urged her son not to leave, fearing danger would meet him on the long journey north. A harrowing photograph of Oscar Alberto Martinez, 25, and his 24-month-old daughter Angie Valeria lying face down on the muddy banks of the Rio Grande river between the United States and Mexico ricocheted across social media this week. Speaking with Reuters from her home in the central municipality of San Martin, Rosa Ramirez, Oscar's mother, cradled two of her granddaughter's most treasured toys, a blue-eyed baby doll and a stuffed purple monkey.

Ex-GOP House Staffer Rory Riley-Topping: Duncan Hunter Groped Me in 2014

Posted: 26 Jun 2019 12:49 PM PDT

Ex-GOP House Staffer Rory Riley-Topping: Duncan Hunter Groped Me in 2014Reuters/RTA former House Republican staffer on Wednesday alleged that Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) sexually assaulted her during a National Republican Congressional Committee dinner in 2014. In an exclusive interview with Kremlin-backed news network RT, conservative commentator Rory Riley-Topping alleged that the Republican congressman grabbed her from behind at the event while she was a staffer for the House veterans committee."Duncan Hunter had clearly appeared intoxicated and came up to me and said he wanted to speak to me about Agent Orange, which was an issue the committee was dealing with at the time," Riley-Topping recalled to RT host Manila Chan. "He leaned into me very closely and said, 'No, I want to talk to you,' and I felt very uncomfortable and tried to back up and he reached around and put his hand on my behind and said, 'Let me give you my cell phone number.'"Hunter, 42, and his wife were indicted last August with conspiracy, wire fraud, and falsification of records after allegedly spending $250,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses and falsifying Federal Election Commission reports to cover their tracks. After previously denying any wrongdoing with her husband, Margaret Hunter pleaded guilty in federal court last week, admitting the pair stole a quarter-of-a-million dollars in campaign funds to pay for vacations and credit-card payments. In response to a Monday motion to dismiss the case, federal prosecutors requested a judge's permission to tell jurors about several instances in which the congressman used campaign funds to pay for Ubers, bar tabs, and expensive getaways he used to woo five D.C. women into "intimate" extramarital relationships. Some of these women, prosecutors alleged, included three lobbyists and one aide to a member of the GOP leadership team. GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter Used Campaign Funds to Pursue 'Intimate' Extramarital Affairs: Feds"All of the women with whom Hunter pursued these relationships were involved in politics in some manner, and Hunter sometimes met or socialized with them in professional settings," prosecutors stated. "Evidence of the intimate, entirely personal quality of Hunter's specific encounters with these women is essential to demonstrate that his spending to facilitate those encounters was improper."Unlike the women prosecutors alleged had a consensual affairs with Hunter, Riley-Topping  told Chan she "immediately pushed [Hunter] away" and told former Rep. John Runyan (R-NJ) of the encounter. "I went up to Congressman Runyan and said 'please get me out of here,'" she said. "And we left and I actually left my position on the committee shortly thereafter because it was not an environment that I felt comfortable working in after that." Riley-Topping, who served as staff director for the committee for three years before becoming an attorney for the National Veterans Legal Services Program and later starting her own consulting firm, said the MeToo movement gave her the confidence to come forward after five years despite her previous fears of retaliation."Members of Congress are very powerful in this town and you don't want to jeopardize your professional future because somebody has the potential to retaliate against you," Riley-Topping said, adding that the latest revelations about Hunter's multiple trysts are not surprising. "I think when you have a married congressman who is targeting young staffers and lobbyists, that's a big red flag," she added, noting that Hunter could possibly face jail time. Hunter first came to the attention of investigators in 2016 when the Federal Election Commission questioned more than $1,300 spent by his campaign committee on Steam, an online video-game portal. While the Republican lawmaker initially blamed the illegal spending on his son, federal agents executed a search warrant in 2017 on the Alexandria, Virginia office of his campaign treasurer. According to the warrant, law-enforcement officials searched the office in pursuit of evidence that Hunter had defrauded a bank by "making false statements related to video game charges." "We are seeing over and over again, unfortunately, that people are spending this money on personal expenses that are not related to their campaign," Riley-Topping said on Wednesday, pivoting the interview to Hunter's ongoing legal woes.Hunter's attorney did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Supreme Court Voids Residency Rule for Liquor Store Owners

Posted: 26 Jun 2019 10:46 AM PDT

Supreme Court Voids Residency Rule for Liquor Store Owners(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Tennessee law that imposed residency requirements on people seeking to run liquor stores, saying the measure unconstitutionally discriminated against out-of-state business people.Tennessee required people to live in the state for two years to get a retail liquor license and for 10 years to get a license renewed.Writing for the 7-2 court, Justice Samuel Alito said the states can't engage in economic protectionism in their liquor regulations. A liquor trade group that supported the law had argued that the Constitution's 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition in 1933, overrides the usual protections for interstate commerce. The goal of the 21st Amendment "was not to give states a free hand to restrict the importation of alcohol for purely protectionist purposes," Alito wrote.Justices Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas dissented. The law was challenged by a couple who bought a liquor store after moving to the state to care for their disabled daughter and by a company affiliated with the Total Wine chain. The case was unusual in that Tennessee hadn't been enforcing its rule and didn't take part in the Supreme Court case. The dispute landed in court only when the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Association, which represents competing retailers, threatened to sue if the state issued a license to Total Wine for a proposed store. The Supreme Court hadn't addressed the reach of the 21st Amendment since a 2005 ruling said states can't bar out-of-state wineries from shipping directly to customers. A 5-4 majority said the 21st Amendment didn't authorize that sort of discrimination.Critics said Tennessee's requirements were the nation's strictest. An initial license lasted only a year, so anyone seeking to maintain a business long-term also had to meet the 10-year requirement for renewals. The rules applied to the directors, officers and shareholders of businesses that own stores. The case is Tennessee Wine and Spirits v. Blair, 18-96.(Updates with details from court opinion in third paragraph)To contact the reporter on this story: Greg Stohr in Washington at gstohr@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Joe Sobczyk at jsobczyk@bloomberg.net, Laurie Asséo, Justin BlumFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Republicans demand Trump face rape investigation

Posted: 26 Jun 2019 11:22 PM PDT

Republicans demand Trump face rape investigationTwo Republican senators have split from their colleagues in calling for Donald Trump's alleged rape of the author E. Jean Carroll to be investigated. Carrol, an advice columnist for Elle magazine, claims in an upcoming book about "hideous men" in her life that the US president forced himself on her in a changing room at New York's Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1995 or 1996. She describes a "colossal struggle" in which Mr Trump entered her "halfway – or completely, I'm not certain".Mr Trump insisted the incident "never happened" and that Carrol was "not my type"; a defence he has used against previous sexual assault allegations. Republican senator Mitt Romney called for an "evaluation" into the claims, though he failed to make clear who should conduct it. "Whether it's Congress or whether it's another setting, I'm not sure," he told CNN on Wednesday. "It's a very serious allegation. I hope that it is fully evaluated. The president said it didn't happen and I certainly hope that's the case."Joni Ernst, a Republican colleague of Mr Romney's said Carrol was right to come forward with the allegation. "But obviously, there has to be some additional information. They need to interview her. They need to visit with him" she told CNN.Many other Republicans, however, dismissed the allegation or claimed they were not even aware of it. "He's denied it, and that's enough for me. Until somebody comes up with something new," said Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator and one of Mr Trump's closest allies in Congress. Despite press coverage in print and on the airwaves, senator Marco Rubio told a reporter they were asking him "about a story that I've never even read". During the 2016 presidential campaign, more than a dozen women accused Mr Trump of sexual misconduct in earlier years. Mr Trump has denied the allegations and said the women are lying.Carroll told CNN: "With all the 16 women who have come forward, it's the same – he denies it, he turns it around, he attacks, and he threatens. Then everybody forgets it, and then the next woman comes along. And I am sick of it. We have to change this culture of sexual violence."

Senate Passes $4.6 Billion Border-Funding Bill after Rejecting Pelosi’s Version

Posted: 26 Jun 2019 01:15 PM PDT

Senate Passes $4.6 Billion Border-Funding Bill after Rejecting Pelosi's VersionThe Senate on Wednesday passed a $4.6 billion spending package to alleviate the ongoing crisis at the southern border, just moments after rejecting a similar emergency-funding bill advanced by House Democrats that included restrictions on the funding of certain border-enforcement measures.Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who shepherded the more restrictive spending bill through the House on Tuesday, announced her caucus's opposition to the Senate bill before it was voted on, ensuring a contentious reconciliation process between the two chambers before a final bill can be sent to President Trump's desk."They pass their bill, we respect that," Pelosi said Wednesday. "We passed our bill, we hope they would respect that. And there are some improvements that we think can be reconciled."Republican lawmakers have emphasized the urgency of the border crisis in asking their Democratic colleagues to avoid a protracted reconciliation process by passing the Senate spending bill immediately, before lawmakers leave town for the one-week July 4 recess.Addressing his colleagues on the Senate floor before the vote on Wednesday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell emphasized the bipartisan support behind the upper chamber's spending bill, which ultimately passed 84–8."The House has not made much progress toward actually making a law, just more resistance theater," McConnell said. "The Senate has a better and more bipartisan way forward.""It's a productive compromise that would go a long way to begin to address the border crisis: no poison pills, just a clean bill," he added, referencing the restrictions placed on the use of funds in the House spending bill. The House bill, which fell 19 votes short of passage in the Senate, includes numerous humanitarian provisions related to the detention of migrants and restricts the amount of funding that can be allocated to enforcement mechanisms. The Senate bill, meanwhile, allocates $1.3 billion to improve the Border Patrol and HHS detention facilities, which have been overwhelmed by the 144,000 asylum-seekers that arrived at the border last month, as well as $2.9 billion to improve the medical care and supervision of migrant children, many of whom, according to multiple recent reports, have been deprived of basic hygiene products and proper beds due to lack of resources.House Democrats, particularly those in the progressive wing of the caucus, remain opposed to the Senate bill because they believe it does not do enough to ensure the humane treatment of migrants. Their bill would allow lawmakers to do unannounced checks of detention facilities, would mandate the provision of certain hygiene products, and would limit the amount of time children can be detained to just 90 days.

Galaxy Note 10 might get an exciting iPhone feature, and it’s all thanks to… Windows 10?

Galaxy Note 10 might get an exciting iPhone feature, and it's all thanks to… Windows 10?With each day that gets us closer to the early August launch of Samsung's next flagship handset, we learn about more and more of the Galaxy Note 10's secrets. Now, a brand new report out of Korea says the phone will have an exciting feature that's not available on other Android devices out of the box, and that it's all courtesy of Microsoft. One of the great things about Apple's iMessage service is that all your conversations are available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as long as you're signed in with your Apple ID. Even better, you can use Macs to reply to both iMessages and regular SMS messages via the Messages app, which means you don't have to switch devices to stay on top of your texts while you're working. There's no such thing on Android, however, as Google is still struggling to come up with a worthy iMessage rival. But that's the kind of functionality that's coming to the Galaxy Note 10, per HankYung, as long as you also use Windows 10 computers.Microsoft already announced the Your Phone Windows 10 feature that lets you mirror the screen of an Android phone to your Windows 10 PC. Your Phone will also let you interact with other apps on the phone, not just messaging apps. And that's how you'll be able to reply to all your Galaxy Note 10 SMS and chat messages directly from a Windows 10 PC.The report notes that Your Phone, which will be preloaded on the Note 10, will also let your preview photos you've taken on the Note 10 directly on a PC. And you'll be able to continue watching videos on a laptop or desktop with the same app.Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said a few days ago that his biggest professional regret is missing out on creating Android for Microsoft. But Microsoft has certainly made plenty of popular apps for both iPhone and Android that gives it a growing presence in the mobile world. And Windows apps like Your Phone could further help Microsoft bridge the gap between smartphones and PCs.

"First Cut of Steel": The Navy's New Ballistic Missile Submarine Is Coming Soon

"First Cut of Steel": The Navy's New Ballistic Missile Submarine Is Coming SoonUsing first-of-its-kind digital modeling techniques, and advanced training, the Navy has been making rapid progress staying ahead of the original construction schedule. The ship specs are 100-percent complete, the arrangements are 97.5 percent complete and the ship disclosures are already 43-percent complete.Almost nobody knows where they are at any given time, yet nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines quietly patrol dark domains of the undersea realm in strategically vital waters around the globe, bringing the prospect of unprecedented destruction upon potential enemies -- all as a way to keep peace. It would not be an exaggeration to call the first "cut of steel" for the lead ship in a class of new nuclear-armed Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines an historic ocassion, as the boat is intended to usher in a new era in firepower-reliant strategic deterrence.A "cut-of-steel" for advanced construction of the first boat took place at Newport News Shipbuilding June 17 -- three weeks early -- marking the formal beginning of a long and carefully labored process of building the most technically advanced ballistic missile submarine ever to exist. The submarine's mission is clear: ensure total destruction against anyone launching a first-strike nuclear attack upon the US."We have to have that first boat out on patrol no later than October, 2030. I can tell you today, we are planning to beat that," Capt. John Rucker, Columbia-class program manager, said at the Navy League's Sea Air Space symposium in May.Using first-of-its-kind digital modeling techniques, and advanced training, the Navy has been making rapid progress staying ahead of the original construction schedule. The ship specs are 100-percent complete, the arrangements are 97.5 percent complete and the ship disclosures are already 43-percent complete."The lead ship Virginia had about one percent of the ship done in advanced construction. We are doing 11-percent of advanced construction to get ahead of the curve. We are trying to de-risk this program to get ahead," Rucker explained.

China Says Its Demands for a Trade Deal With the U.S. Haven't Changed

China Says Its Demands for a Trade Deal With the U.S. Haven't Changed(Bloomberg) -- There's no change to China's conditions for making a trade deal with the U.S. as the two nations' leaders prepare to meet this weekend, a government spokesman said."China's core concerns must be addressed properly," Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng said at a regular briefing in Beijing Thursday, when asked about the three demands laid out by Vice Premier Liu He in May.In order to reach an agreement the U.S. must remove all extra tariffs, set targets for Chinese purchases of goods in line with real demand and ensure that the text of the deal is "balanced" to ensure the "dignity" of both nations, according to Liu."We hope the U.S. side could drop its wrong practices, and we can solve the problems through equal dialogue and cooperation," Gao said. The trade teams are in contact to prepare for the meeting, and the respective negotiators had a good phone call earlier in the week, Gao said, without clarifying whether the trade teams will meet in Osaka before the leaders' encounter.Separately, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang also briefed reporters in Beijing on Thursday."The U.S.'s threat to add tariffs cannot scare us," Geng said. "The Chinese people refuse to be misled and will not be intimidated. So I would like to offer a piece of advice to the U.S. -- starting a trade war and adding tariffs harms itself and others."To contact Bloomberg News staff for this story: Miao Han in Beijing at mhan22@bloomberg.net;April Ma in Beijing at ama112@bloomberg.net;James Mayger in Beijing at jmayger@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Jeffrey Black at jblack25@bloomberg.net, Sharon ChenFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Dozens of drivers get stuck in mud after Google reroutes them down dirt roadDozens of cars got stuck in mud after being rerouted by Google Maps to an obscure road near Denver International Airport. After a car crash caused long traffic wait, Google's GPS app rerouted some drivers to East 64th Avenue in Aurora. This new route was supposed to take half the time. The first few minutes on the road were fine, but then, 64th Avenue turned into a dirt road. After a few days of rain, the road had become mud. When Connie Monsees, who was going to pick up her husband at the airport, saw dozens of cars stuck one after the other, not able to move, it was already too late. the road is narrow, so there was no turning back. "That's when I thought, this was a bad idea," Monsees told ABC7NY. She has all-wheel drive, so she was one of the lucky ones able to make it out the mud. She took with her two people who asked for a ride."I tore up the inside passenger wheel well for my tire, but it's not that big of a deal compared to some other people who really tore their cars up and got themselves stuck out there," she said.According to ABC7NY, the road is privately-owned and maintained. Following the incident, the road was closed to the public. It's unclear why the GPS redirected the cars on that road.

Pritzker signed into law a bill that also provides for the removal of certain previous drug convictions and will generate new revenue for the financially troubled state. The Democratic governor hailed the measure, which was passed by the legislature last month, for allowing as many as 700,000 marijuana-related records and convictions to be erased. "This legislation will clear the cannabis-related records of nonviolent offenders through an efficient combination of automatic expungement, of gubernatorial pardon and individual court action," Pritzker said at a bill-signing event.
