Chris Wallace Scolds Kirsten Gillibrand for 'Not Very Polite' Criticism of Fox News Abortion CoverageCarlos Barria/ReutersDuring a Fox News town hall on Sunday featuring New York senator and 2020 contender Kirsten Gillibrand, host Chris Wallace told Gillibrand it wasn't "very polite" of her to criticize Fox News for spreading misinformation on abortions. When Wallace asked the New York senator a question about later abortions, she said the network's role in spreading "infanticide" rhetoric and a "false narrative" surrounding the procedure was "a problem." "Maybe to make your credentials with the Democratic base who are not appearing on Fox News, you want to attack us, but I'm not sure it's frankly very polite," Wallace replied. "OK, I'll do it in a polite way," she responded.Later in the town hall, Wallace asked Gillibrand what she meant when she said "our future is female." The senator responded that she meant bringing the voices of more women to the table. "What about men?" Wallace asked. "They're already there—do you not know?" Gillibrand countered, adding that she meant to be "inclusionary" in her explanation.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast hereGet our top stories in your inbox every day. Can anybody stop Biden? Challengers make their case to California Dems

Can anybody stop Biden? Challengers make their case to California DemsWhile 14 top Democratic presidential candidates swarmed the Golden State this weekend for the California Democratic Party's convention and related events, one was conspicuously absent: former vice president and early frontrunner Joe Biden, who decided to skip the festivities in favor of an LGBTQ-rights gala 2,500 miles away in Columbus, Ohio. "Some Democrats in Washington believe the only changes we can get are tweaks and nudges," Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in her convention speech, much of which amounted to a veiled but unmistakable attack on Biden's belief in "middle ground" policies and bipartisan consensus.

Venice cruise ship collides with river boat and dock in busy canal leaving several injured

Venice cruise ship collides with river boat and dock in busy canal leaving several injuredA big cruise ship that was preparing to dock in Venice lost control on Sunday morning, crashing into the wharf and hitting a smaller tourist boat, local authorities said. Four people were wounded in the accident, which happened in Venice's central Giudecca Canal, rescuers and port authorities said.   Video footage posted on YouTube and local media showed tourists running away in shock, as the Opera MSC cruise ship scraped along the dockside, before smashing into the River Countess tourist boat.  The crash may have happened after a cable used to link the cruise ship to the tugboats that were pulling it into the city's canals broke, a fire fighters' spokesman said.  The Opera ship was unable to stop due to its huge weight and the strong currents pulling it towards the dock. "The situation is now under control," the spokesman said. The accident immediately reignited debate over the damages caused by gigantic ship cruises to Venice's historic infrastructure and their huge impact on the fragile lagoon's environment.  A cruise ship lost control and crashed against a smaller tourist boat at the San Basilio dock in Venice Credit: REUTERS/Manuel Silvestri Venetians have long dubbed these massive ships "monsters" because they often ruin the lagoon's view, but also because they are held responsible for hurting the foundations of the city's historical buildings with the waves they create.  The citizens' biggest complaint is about the traffic of the cruise ships that are currently allowed to pass within a few hundred yards of St Mark's Square and Venice's historic centre on their way to the city's international passenger terminal. A 2017 plan that would force the cruise ships weighing more than 96,000 tons to take a less central route via the industrial area of Marghera is still waiting for the national government's final approval. However, works on the new route -- which would require the dredging of canals and the construction of a new port – could take up to four years.  "This is an epochal issue," said Silvio Testa, a member of Venice's activist group Comitato No Grandi Navi (No Big Ships Committee), which has fought against the big ships' traffic for years. "Instead, we are treating the Venetian lagoon like a big potato field, where everything can be done."  In an informal referendum organised by the committee in June 2017, nearly 99 per cent of the 18,000 Venetians who took part voted in favour of banning giant cruise ships from the city's lagoon altogether.  The high-profile issue has been recently brought into spotlight again by popular street artist Banksy in his "Venice in Oil" installation, showing a large ship floating in the city's Grand Canal, surrounded by the Bridge of Sighs and outraged men steering gondolas.

Here’s a state-by-state look at the fastest mobile network speeds in the US

Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:02 AM PDT

Here's a state-by-state look at the fastest mobile network speeds in the USOpensignal has released a new report today about mobile network speeds in the US, offering an overview of how smartphone download speeds haven't improved all that much from this time last year. The report goes into greater detail about that, in addition to ranking each state and the top 50 US cities with the fastest speeds.Among the key findings of the report, tech hub cities surprisingly don't excel when compared to the 50 largest cities. For example, San Francisco, Seattle, and Austin are all ranked in the bottom half of that list of 50 when measuring download and upload speeds, plus overall video experience.Across all 50 states, the report continues, smartphone users experienced download speeds that range from 12.1 Mbps in Mississippi to 32.9 Mbps in New Jersey. States with the fastest speeds are mostly concentrated in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions, while the two fastest cities are Cleveland and Minneapolis, according to the report. There's also a wide divergence in speeds between the top and bottom of that list of 50 cities, with the fastest cities offering speeds that are almost twice as fast as Oklahoma City, which ranks at the bottom.High upload speeds in New York and Salt Lake City mean you'll have the best experience there when sharing smartphone photos and videos. Interestingly, Los Angeles (the home of Hollywood) comes in at a middling 30th place when ranked for mobile video experience.5G offers significant promise in these areas, but, of course, it will still be a while longer before most ordinary customers get to experience that level of connectivity. "In even the lowest-scoring US city for 4G availability," Opensignal notes in the report, "smartphone users spend 94.7% of the time connected to 4G rather than older technologies such as 3G. Opensignal expects it will be years before smartphone users spend as much time connected to 5G networks as they do 4G networks and hence measures of 4G mobile experience such as 4G availability will continue to be important."

Gun Owners Are Passionate About Glock: 3 Ways to Make Them BetterA better Glock trigger will take a seasoned shooter and do a few things for you. Someone who's mastered the stock Glock trigger knows they are only chasing fractions of an inch and fractions of a second. First it will make you shrink your groups, you'll gain that fraction of an inch through a better trigger.Since then the Glock has gone on to become an insanely popular handgun. Part of that popularity is modularity. Glock pistols in general have three different frame sizes, the standard, the larger, and the single stack. By frame size I don't mean length and width, I mean compatibility. For example, the Glock 26 and Glock 17 are the same standard frame. There are differences in overall size, but they can accept the same magazines and the same internals. This makes it very easy to find upgradeable parts for any Glock.Today, we are looking and talking about the most popular Glock upgrade out there, the trigger. The compatibility we mentioned is important, because you have to be selective about your trigger, and ensure it fits your Glock frame.HOW THE GLOCK TRIGGER WORKS

U.S. regulators say some Boeing 737 MAX planes may have faulty partsThe U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday disclosed a new problem involving Boeing Co's grounded 737 MAX, saying that more than 300 of that troubled plane and the prior generation 737 may contain improperly manufactured parts and that the agency will require these parts to be quickly replaced. The FAA said up to 148 of the part known as a leading-edge slat track that were manufactured by a Boeing supplier are affected, covering 179 MAX and 133 NG aircraft worldwide. The 737 MAX, Chicago-based Boeing's best-selling jet, was grounded globally in March following a fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash after a similar Lion Air disaster in Indonesia in October.

NASA astronaut captures breathtaking time-lapse of Earth from space

NASA astronaut captures breathtaking time-lapse of Earth from spaceHere on Earth, we see the Sun rise and set once in any given 24-hour period. If you want to see the sunrise or sunset you need to set your watch so you don't miss it, or you'll be left waiting another day for the opportunity. Things are a whole lot different on the International Space Station. Travelers spending time aboard the orbiting laboratory don't just have to deal with the lack of gravity and somewhat cramped quarters, they also have to wrestle with the fact that normal "days" don't really exist when you're speeding around the Earth over a dozen times per day. Astronaut Nick Hague, who is currently on board the ISS, decided to use that to his advantage and filmed a gorgeous time-lapse of Earth from the eyes of an ISS resident. The video, which is just under a minute long, is pure eye candy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75BvlfSbkEA&feature=youtu.be&linkId=68266947 "This time-lapse video taken by NASA astronaut Nick Hague squeezes a 30-minute International Space Station trip over a cloudy Earth into 60 seconds, covering the Pacific to the Atlantic," NASA explains. The International Space Station completes a full orbit of Earth in just around 90 minutes. At that rate, astronauts aboard the spacecraft get to see around 16 sunsets every 24 hours. Those aboard the space station keep to strict schedules to ensure they remain in a rhythm similar to their counterparts on Earth. NASA routinely provides live streaming views of Earth and space from the International Space Station, but it's undeniably cool to see a high-quality timelapse like this that was shot by one of NASA's own astronauts. Hague, who arrived at the space station earlier this year, will remain aboard the spacecraft for Expedition 60 which is slated to begin in July of this year.

Order to hide USS John McCain from Trump not 'unreasonable' – chief of staff

Order to hide USS John McCain from Trump not 'unreasonable' – chief of staff'We all know how the president feels about the former senator'Trump confirms USS John McCain was hidden from his view Donald Trump on order to hide the USS John McCain: 'Somebody did it because they thought I didn't like him, OK? And they were well-meaning, I will say.' Photograph: Ahmad Masood/Reuters An order to have a ship named for the late Senator John McCain hidden from view during Donald Trump's recent visit to Japan was "not an unreasonable thing to ask", the president's chief of staff said on Sunday. Mick Mulvaney made the startling claim even as it was reported that the Pentagon has told the White House to stop politicizing the military. The US navy has confirmed reports about an internal email that said the White House military office wanted the USS John McCain kept "out of sight" when Trump was in Japan. The email was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. McCain died last year at 81, from brain cancer. The 2008 Republican presidential nominee remained fiercely at odds with Trump over his military service in Vietnam and Trump's absence from that war, and over political matters including a healthcare overhaul that sunk on his vote in the Senate. Since McCain's death, Trump has continued his attacks. Trump said this week he knew nothing about the request to hide the ship named after McCain. But he also said: "Somebody did it because they thought I didn't like him, OK? And they were well-meaning, I will say." On Sunday, Mulvaney told NBC's Meet the Press: "The fact some 23- or 24-year-old person went to that site and said, 'Oh my goodness, there's the John McCain, we all know how the president feels about the former senator, that's not the best backdrop, can somebody look into moving it?' "That's not an unreasonable thing to ask." Press interest in the story, Mulvaney claimed, was "outrageous". In South Korea, acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan told reporters he was not planning to seek an investigation by the Pentagon's internal watchdog, "because there was nothing carried out" by the navy. But he also said he needed to gather more information about what happened. "How did the people receiving the information – how did they treat it," Shanahan said. "That would give me an understanding on the next steps." Mulvaney said it would be "silly" if anyone was fired over the email. "The president's feeling towards the former senator are well known," he said. "They are well known throughout the office, they are well known in the media." Shanahan also said he had spoken to McCain's wife, Cindy, though he did not reveal what was said. McCain's daughter Meghan, a television pundit, said this week: "It's impossible to go through the grief process when my father, who's been dead 10 months, is constantly in the news cycle because the president is so obsessed with the fact that he's never going to be a great man like he was." The McCain incident has dogged Shanahan through his trip to Asia, in which he has tried to deal with national security issues involving China and North Korea. Shanahan is yet to be formally nominated. The McCain issue is sure to come up at any Senate confirmation hearing. A spokesman for Shanahan, Lt Col Joseph Buccino, told the Associated Press the secretary told his chief of staff on Friday to speak to the White House military office "and reaffirm his mandate that the Department of Defense will not be politicized". Shanahan told reporters he was told that despite the White House request, the navy did not move the USS John McCain and that a barge in front of it was moved before Trump arrived to visit the USS Wasp. He said a tarpaulin that had been draped over the ship's name was removed, having been put there for maintenance reasons only. Asked if his senior staff were aware of the White House request, Shanahan said he had been told they were not. He has also said he was not aware of the request and would not have authorized it. It is not known who at the Pentagon may have known about the request to hide the USS John McCain. It is also not clear whether navy leaders deliberately chose its crew to be on leave during Trump's visit, or if other measures were taken to ensure that the ship was not visible from where the president stood on the Wasp. The warship was commissioned in 1994 and named for the senator's father and grandfather, both navy admirals named John Sidney McCain. Last year, the navy rededicated the ship to honor the senator too.

America Was Terrified of China's Nuclear Weapons. This Mach 3 Drone Spied on Them.McLucas noted that new spy satellites were spending more time in orbit. In 1971, Corona, Gambit and Hexagon spy sats would rack up a combined 181 days in orbit, McLucas reported. He projected days-on-orbit would grow to 279 by 1974.Between 1969 and 1971, the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office deployed super-fast spy drones over China in an abortive attempt to spy on Beijing's nuclear program. The NRO on March 21, 2019 declassified scores of five-decade-old records documenting the development, deployment and termination of the "Tagboard" drone system.(This first appeared two months ago.)Tagboard's air vehicle was the Lockheed-made D-21 drone. It was an impressive example of brute-force, mid-century engineering.Made of titanium and weighing 12 tons, the 19-feet-wingspan D-21 in its early forms launched from atop a special variant of the A-12, the CIA's version of the Mach-3 SR-71. The A-12, in essence, was the booster for the drone, climbing to 80,000 feet of altitude and accelerating to Mach 3.3 before separating from the pilotless vehicle. The D-21's ramjet engine took over, allowing it to cruise at three times the speed of sound for as far as 3,000 miles. A 300-pound Hycon HR 335 camera peering through the drone's lower fuselage could capture 5,600 exposures covering an area 16 miles wide and 3,900 miles long.
