Stelzer's ruling also set a hearing for Wednesday to consider Planned Parenthood's request for a preliminary injunction to stop the state from forcing the clinic to close.

George Nader, Witness in Mueller Probe, Denied Release on Child-Porn Charges

Posted: 04 Jun 2019 12:55 PM PDT

George Nader, Witness in Mueller Probe, Denied Release on Child-Porn ChargesREUTERSGeorge Nader, an emissary to the United Arab Emirates who cooperated extensively with Special Counsel Robert Mueller probe, was denied release on Tuesday after being arrested for possessing child pornography.Nader, 60, a Lebanese-American businessman, will be handed over to federal agents for extradition to Virginia for his prosecution. He was arrested Monday at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport for allegedly possessing child pornography on a cellphone more than a year ago. He was originally charged in Jan. 2018 after he arrived at Washington-Dulles International Airport from Dubai, according to the complaint unsealed Monday, where he allegedly transported "child pornography and child erotica," including videos showing children. Nader previously pleaded guilty to the same charge in 1991. Assistant United States Attorney Miriam Glaser proposed to have two FBI agents drive Nader from New York to Virginia. Nader, who will be picked up at 9 a.m. Wednesday, is expected to spend the night in Alexandria before his next hearing."The investigating agent is willing to take Nader in his car along with another agent with medical expertise and transport him to a courthouse in Virginia," Glaser said. The agreed proposal followed an order by Magistrate Judge Cheryl Pollak for overnight detainment. Nader, appearing disheveled and dressed in a khaki jumpsuit, arrived in Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday alongside his defense lawyer, Chris Clark, who revealed the Dubai resident returned to New York on Monday for a cardiologist appointment at Mount Sinai Hospital. Clark also claimed Nader had open-heart surgery five weeks ago in Germany and has been suffering from complications. At the behest of his doctors in Germany, Nader was scheduled to meet with "renowned cardiologist" Dr. Rony Shimony on Monday to discuss whether he needed another surgery or "treatment at a rehabilitation center."George Nader, Witness in Mueller Investigation, Arrested on Child Porn Charges"Mr. Nader is supposed to be at Mount Sinai Hospital right now," Clark said. "The surgery in Germany took a couple arteries out and put a couple arteries in. This Mount Sinai visit wasn't just a check up."Clark asked Judge Pollack on Tuesday that Nader be allowed free on bond to go to a Virginia medical facility where could seek treatment while under 24-hour armed guard. Prosecutors opposed the request for bail, however, pointing to Nader's access to millions in cryptocurrency, and foreign government connections. Judge Pollack ultimately sided with the U.S. attorneys, arguing what while Nader's medical records do show heart issues, he is healthy enough to travel across the world. After a brief deliberation, Pollack agreed to release Nader "to the custody of the FBI.""He clearly was OK to travel from Dubai to New York to see Dr. Shimony," Pollack said. "I just don't know it raises to the level of some imminent concern."Pollack also ruled Tuesday Nader's request to seek medical attention at a facility will be ruled in Virginia.Nader was a witness in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He testified several times in front of the grand jury and was named throughout Mueller's report. He entered into a cooperation agreement with the Department of Justice, but the terms of that agreement were reportedly limited. Nader has been living in the United Arab Emirates since the spring of 2018. He has long been active in American politics, forging close relationships with both Democrats and Republicans over the years. Before becoming a part of Trumpworld he had forged connections with Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2016. During that time, he represented himself to those he communicated with as someone with close connections to Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed in the UAE and members of the Saudi royal court, including Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Beginning in the summer of 2016, Nader attended meetings and communicated with Trump's inner circle on topics ranging from U.S.-Gulf relations and plans to help Trump win the election. In Aug. 2016, he attended a meeting in New York with Donald Trump Jr., Blackwater founder Erik Prince, and Israeli intelligence expert Joel Zamel to discuss a social-media manipulation plan that could help Trump clinch the election in November. It's unclear if that plan ever went forward but aides in the West Wing have said the proposal was never seriously considered. Following that meeting, though, Nader reportedly paid Zamel $2 million.Later, after the election, Nader helped set up a meeting in the Seychelles between Prince and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of one of Russia's sovereign wealth funds. That meeting was described extensively in the Mueller report. The Daily Beast first reported last year that Dmitriev and Prince talked about a proposed road map for U.S.-Russia relations in the Trump era.An eyewitness saw individuals cleaning out Nader's apartment in Washington last summer, carrying away his valuables in trash bags, including a Kohler toilet. The individual said the men were not with an official moving company. According to publicly available tax documents, it appears Nader still owns his apartment, but individuals in his building say it is being rented out.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Nobody wants to fly on the disastrous 737 Max, even if Boeing fixes it

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 08:21 AM PDT

Nobody wants to fly on the disastrous 737 Max, even if Boeing fixes itEarlier this year, a Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed in Ethiopia, claiming the lives of all 157 people on board. The crash was the second tragic loss of a 737 Max 8 full of passengers within several months, leading aviation authorities to ground the planes until the company and safety officials could determine what went wrong.Plenty of news regarding the troubled planes has surfaced in the intervening months, revealing that certain software features of the planes' computer systems are likely to blame for both crashes. Pilots are understandably upset that the issue wasn't addressed after the first crash (or, even better, before the planes were allowed to fly), but Boeing now has an even larger problem on its hands: Nobody wants to ride in its shiny new planes. As the Los Angeles Times reports, air travelers are now wary about climbing aboard a 737 in the future, and understandably so. A new survey released by the Atmosphere Research Group suggests that nearly half of all travelers would actually be willing to avoid a 737 Max flight even if it meant having to pay more for an alternate trip.A full 20 percent of respondents said they'd be completely avoiding the 737 Max if and when the fleet is finally cleared for travel once more. A mere 14 percent said they were definitely willing to take a trip in one of the troubled planes. The survey, which included some 2,000 recent fliers who answered 38 questions for the poll, doesn't look good for Boeing, which now has around 350 of the 737 Max aircraft collecting dust while officials sort out how to proceed. The company tested software upgrades that could prevent similar crashes in the future, but with two incredibly tragic crashes within the last year, convincing the traveling public that the planes are air-worthy again will take a lot of work.

The defense asked Rugh to dismiss the case or remove prosecutors because of the surreptitious effort to track defense emails without court approval in an effort to find the source of news leaks.

Clothes, Sponges Stained With Missing Mom Jennifer Dulos’ Blood Found in Trash Cans: Police

Clothes, Sponges Stained With Missing Mom Jennifer Dulos' Blood Found in Trash Cans: PoliceNew Canaan Police DepartmentAs authorities carry out a feverish search for missing Connecticut mom Jennifer Dulos, court records released Monday show that investigators have recovered clothes and sponges stained with her blood from trash cans in Hartford and based on cellphone tracking placed her estranged husband near the cans the night she disappeared. The new details were released in arrest warrant affidavits for Dulos' husband, Fotis Dulos, and his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, who were formally charged in court Monday with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution, The Hartford Courant reports. The duo was held on $500,000 bond, and prosecutors told a judge they plan to file additional charged in the case. Troconis is reportedly out on bail, while Dulos is not. The newspaper reports that both have declined to cooperate in the investigation.Dulos, who has five children with Fotis Dulos and has been enmeshed in a bitter divorce proceeding for two years, has been missing since May 24.He'll 'Harm Me': Connecticut Mom Jennifer Dulos Missing Amid Two-Year Divorce BattleAccording to the warrants, police went to the mom's home after she failed to show up to multiple doctor's appointment in New York and concerned friends contacted police in New Canaan around 7 p.m. on May 24.Arriving officers found no one home but were able to gain access after friends encouraged a nanny to let police inside. During the search, officers found stains on the garage floor and on a vehicle in the garage, and evidence that someone had tried to clean up the crime scene, the warrants say.The also located a Chevy Suburban registered to Jennifer Dulos about three miles from her home, but no sign of her in or near the vehicle, the documents say.Based on what was recovered from the crime scene, "investigators came to the consensus that a serious physical assault had occurred at the scene and Jennifer Dulos was the suspected victim," the affidavit says. The next day, officers briefly interviewed Fotis Dulos, who met investigators with his attorney at his side and declined to assist in the investigation, but handed his iPhone X to a detective who seized the cellphone, believing it contained evidence of a crime, the affidavit says. Search warrants for the phone place the estranged husband in north Hartford on the night of May 24, the affidavit states. Investigators coupled the cellphone data with footage from surveillance cameras monitored by the Hartford Police Department that show a man who looks like Dulos and a passenger who resembles Troconis driving in a pickup truck that makes more than 30 stops along a four-mile stretch of Albany Avenue discarding trash bags that appear to be stained with blood, the affidavit says. The license plate on the truck appears to match one owned by Fotis Dulos and a sticker matching one on his truck appears in the surveillance footage as well, the affidavit says. The footage shows the bags being thrown into various trash receptacles and in once instance something being pushed through a storm grate, the affidavit states. Investigators responding to the storm grate recovered an envelope that contained two Connecticut license plates that were registered to a SUV owned by Fotis Dulos, the affidavit says. Investigators searched for the trash bags and recovered bags that are consistent with those seen on surveillance cameras, the affidavit says. Inside they recovered clothing that appeared to contain blood, kitchen items including a bloody sponge, and other pieces of evidence that are not detailed.A crime lab determined the blood from items recovered from the trash was that of Jennifer Dulos, the affidavit said.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Cryptocurrency pioneer pays $4.57m for lunch with Warren Buffett, who called Bitcoin 'rat poison squared'Justin Sun, a cryptocurrency entrepreneur, bid $4.57m to have lunch with Warren Buffett, who once called Bitcoin "rat poison squared."Mr Sun launched a cyptocurrency called Tron, or TRX Troken, in 2017. It's valued at $2.56bn, and listed on CoinMarkCap.com as the 10th largest cryptocurrency in the world."As some of you might know, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has said publicly he sees no 'unique value' in Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency," Mr Sun wrote in a Medium post, referencing more remarks from Mr Buffett. "Yet, he has pointed to the potential in blockchain, the underlying technology behind all cryptocurrency."Mr Buffett serves as the chairman of the holding company Berkshire Hathaway, and is thought to be worth over $82bn, making him the third richest person in the world. In 2018, the billionaire said Berkshire Hathaway would "never have a position" in the trend, saying "cryptocurrency will come to a bad ending."The high-priced lunch is part of an annual auction to raise money for the Glide Foundation, a San Francisco-based charity which Mr Buffet's late wife Susan supported. Glide provides meals for the city's homeless, offers support to domestic violence victims, and helps people find shelter. It has raised over $30m over its years. Mr Sun's nearly $5m lunch was the highest a bidder has ever paid for a lunch with the famed investor."I look at the upcoming lunch with Buffett as an opportunity to seek mutual understanding and growth," Mr Sun said his announcement. "To aid in the conversation and support the overall cryptocurrency and blockchain community, I will invite several industry leaders — with your input — to accompany me to New York City for the lunch."The auction for the lunch with Mr Buffet this year drew 18 bidders. Previous winners have included hedge fund manager David Einhorn, of Greenlight Capital, in 2003, and Ted Weschler, who won two years in a row and now works as one of Mr Buffett's portfolio managers at Berkshire Hathaway."I'm delighted with the fact that Justin has won the lunch and am looking forward to meeting him and his friends," Mr Buffett wrote in an email sent to Bloomberg on the lunch. "We are going to have a good time, and Glide will use his contribution to help many thousands of people."

All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn’t reveal at WWDC

Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT

All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn't reveal at WWDCApple executives took the stage in San Jose, California on Monday morning and gave the world its first look at the company's next-generation software platforms. MacOS 10.15 Catalina is packed full of nifty new features, tvOS 13 gets a great new home screen, and watchOS 6 has all sorts of new features as well as new watch faces. You can read a full recap of all the biggest announcements right here, but it goes without saying that the star of the show during Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote was iOS 13. After last year's iOS 12 update focused almost exclusively on fixing bugs and improving performance, the company's new iOS 13 software shifts gears back to adding new features -- and needless to say, there are far too many new features in iOS 13 for Apple to have covered them all during its keynote presentation. We've already detailed the 15 best new iOS 13 features coming to your iPhone and iPad later this year, and it's a fantastic list. Highlights include the new system-wide Dark Mode users have been clamoring for, swipe typing support on the Apple keyboard, a new secure "Sign in with Apple" feature, and new call filtering capabilities that could eliminate spam calls almost entirely. But what about all the smaller iOS 13 features that Apple didn't have time to cover on stage at WWDC 2019?At the end of the iOS 13 section of Apple's WWDC keynote on Monday, senior vice president of software Craig Federighi noted that there were far too many new iOS 13 features to cover them all. As he said that, a slide flashed on the screen behind him and listed nearly 70 additional new iOS 13 features for the iPhone and iPad that hadn't been discussed on stage. Apple news blog 9to5Mac managed to take a screen captured of the slide in question, and it wrote out all the new iOS 13 features shown on that list. Here's the full rundown:iOS 13 system: * Optimized battery charging * Single sign-on extension * Option to download large apps over cellular * Video downloads optimized for congestion in India * Wi-Fi selection in Control center * Enhanced QR code scanning * Reading goals in Apple Books * Low Data ModeAudio: * Dolby Atmos playback * Bluetooth wireless splitterFaceTime, Phone, and Messages: * Improved search in Messages * Silence unknown callers * FaceTime on Dual SIM * iMessage on dual SIMPhotos: * Location controls for Shared Photos * Search enhancements in PhotosReminders & Notes: * Folder Management in Notes * Customize appearance of Reminders lists * View only collaboration in Notes * More powerful search in Notes * New Checklist Option in NotesMDM & Business: * Business Chat Suggestions * Data separation for BYOD * Managed Apple IDS for business * Modern authentication for device enrolmentCalendar & Mail & Contacts: * Add attachments to events in Calendar * New relationship labels in Contacts * Block sender in Mail * Mute thread in MailKeyboard & Language: * Separate Emoji and Globe Keys * Enhanced language setup * Thai-English bilingual dictionary * Hindi and English bilingual keyboard * Typing predictions for Hindi * Typing predictions for Dutch * Adjustable Chinese handwriting keyboard height * Typing predictions for Vietnamese * Typing predictions for Swedish * Language selection per app * Typing predictions for Cantonese * Typing predictions for Arabic * Vietnamese English bilingual dictionary * Refreshed Home accessory controls * Weak password warnings * Simultaneous phone calls on Dual SIM * Keyboard support for all 22 official Indian languages * New Indian language system fonts * Apple News+ in UK and AustraliaSiri: * Indian English Siri voices * Siri Suggestions in Apple Podcasts * Siri Event Suggestions from Third-party apps * Siri Shortcuts in Home automations * Conversational Siri shortcutsCarPlay & Maps: * Second video stream support in CarPlay * CarPlay irregular screen size support * Hey Siri support in CarPlay * CarPlay adjustable screen size support * Do Not Disturb While Driving in CarPlay * Independent CarPlay app views * Light mode in CarPlay * Improved Report a problem in Maps * Maps Place Card enhancementsSafari: * Updated Safari Start Page * Siri suggestions in Safari * Enhanced anti-fingerprinting protections in SafariAs you can see, there are definitely some gems that Apple didn't get to during the WWDC keynote. "Optimized battery charging" and "Low Data Mode" both sound quite promising, and several of our readers likely fainted when they got to "Improved search in Messages" on the list. The search function in Apple's Messages apps in iOS and in macOS has always been horrible, so we can't wait to see if Apple got its act together in iOS 13. Also worth noting, you won't find mention of the new volume HUD on the list above, but Apple FINALLY fixed the little pop up that appears when you adjust the volume in iOS 13. That's right, it doesn't block the entire middle of the screen anymore! Now that iOS 13 beta 1 is out (here's how to install it on your iPhone) and people are testing on their iPhones, plenty more news about new unannounced iOS 13 features will trickle out over the coming days.

Trump supporter hit by milkshake amid chants of "Nazi scum off our streets"Milkshake was thrown at a man during an incident in London's Parliament Square on Tuesday amid arguments between groups supporting and against U.S. President Donald Trump, who is in Britain on a three-day visit. Video from the protest, shot by a reporter for London radio station LBC, showed a male Trump supporter being surrounded by several anti-Trump protesters who chanted "Nazi scum!" to his face. Amid the scuffle a milkshake was seen being thrown at the Trump supporter, landing on his head and dripping down his face. The man, who was later pictured wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat, then threw the milkshake back at the cheering crowd. As the protesters continued to chant at the Trump supporter, voices of several people could be heard in the video telling an anti-Trump female protester: "You're just as bad as this guy!" According to a Reuters photographer at the scene, the incident started with the pro- and anti-Trump groups chanting at each other. The protesters have been largely kept away from U.S. President Donald Trump, with roads closed around Buckingham Palace and Downing Street.

What Exactly Is Bishop Tobin Apologizing For?

Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:51 AM PDT

What Exactly Is Bishop Tobin Apologizing For?I  have yet to hear a satisfying rationale for why people who insist that religion is a series of myths used to manipulate the American underclass are simultaneously qualified to lecture me about the authentic values of Jesus of Nazareth. Silly Christian believer! Don't you know that Jesus Christ — who probably didn't exist and most certainly wasn't divine — would have been on the front lines of smashing the patriarchy? The typical clique of secularists moonlighting as Christian exegetes was out in force this weekend, attacking Bishop Thomas Tobin for his unexceptional recitation of an article of the Catholic Church's bimillennial teaching on sexual ethics. His tweet set the Internet ablaze on Saturday, with Twitter users by the tens of thousands rallying to deride the Catholic prelate over the following statement: "A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ 'Pride Month' events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children."The last line of his tweet, which invoked concerns about the safety of children, was met with predictable accusations of hypocrisy. On the merits, however, is he wrong? Why should children be subjected to any profligate display of sexuality, homosexual or otherwise?Bishop Tobin later apologized, stating that he was upset to learn that his "comments . . . about Pride Month have turned out to be so controversial in our community, and offensive to some, especially the gay community. That certainly was not my intention, but I understand why a good number of individuals have taken offense."Are members of the Church hierarchy now obligated to apologize publicly for reiterating the sexual ethics subscribed to by countless canonized saints?Tobin's original statement on the Church's dogma on homosexuality and his subsequent apology prompted Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen to write a response column with the subtle headline "If Donald Trump were a bishop, he'd be named Tom Tobin."Kevin Cullen grants the reader unique access to the nuanced internal hermeneutic he used to make sense of the bishop's remarks:> My first reaction was, "Jesus, what was he thinking?"> > My second reaction was, "What's Jesus thinking?"> > And I'm thinking Jesus is thinking, "Why is this clown walking around claiming to represent me?"After using the first permutation of his exegetical exercise to take the Lord's name in vain, Cullen asked himself what the Lord of the Universe would think of Bishop Tobin and his statement. After deciding that his own opinion was a better window into the mind of Christ than the unchanging moral dicta of the Church that He founded, Cullen reached a mature terminus by calling the ordained successor to the apostles a "clown."Jesus would hate Bishop Tobin!Forget the old debates over the supposedly low Christology of Mark versus the high Christology of John — Cullen's Jesus is a '60s radical whose good news was meant primarily not for the poor but for "nonconformists" and "nerds":> Jesus loved outsiders and nonconformists. He walked with lepers, prostitutes, and nerds. He embraced anyone and everyone, especially the scorned and the devalued. And gay and transgendered people continue to be scorned and devalued by prominent citizens like the bishop of Providence.Jesus came to call pot-smoking hipsters and World of Warcraft devotees!Christ did indeed love and embrace "anyone and everyone" (and this includes, to the extent that they existed in first-century Judea, Galilee, and environs, "nerds.") But His love never prevented Him from insisting that people change their behavior. To quote an example that Cullen is no doubt familiar with, here is Christ's interaction with a rich young man in Saint Mark's Gospel (emphasis mine):> And Jesus looking on him, loved him, and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.Christ's love is grounded not in license but in truth; in the famous case of the rich young man, even as Jesus "loved him," He still insisted that the man go and make a radically difficult decision to forgo temporal pleasure (could you imagine selling "whatever thou hast?") for the Kingdom of God.The bishop's statement is self-evidently correct. It is an unremarkable statement of fact that "Catholic faith and morals," in the bishop's wording, have been unanimous and unambiguous on the question of sexual ethics since the very first days of the Church. One is free to reject the validity of those values, but the bishop's statement, inasmuch as it plainly reflects the unchanging position of the Catholic Church on same-sex sexual behavior, should be beyond dispute. If you think the Church is wrong, say so. If you think that Jesus of Nazareth was an obscure first-century figure whose death was an ignominious event that sparked a group of schizophrenic followers to fabricate a resurrection story to assuage their consciences, say so. But you can't simultaneously claim the mantle of the New Testament and assert that John Q. Public, waywardly floating about in 21st-century Brooklyn and disconnected from organized Christianity, is speaking in persona Christi while the Church He founded is leading the flock astray. Though it may reasonably surprise an American public that has grown accustomed to the moral imprecision of the post-conciliar clergy, there are still prelates in the Catholic hierarchy who believe what the Church does and always has taught.Bishop Tobin is not a human-resources manager at a woke tech startup; he is a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church, subservient to the deposit of faith and an heir to the unbroken chain of apostles who have served in the episcopate over the past two thousand years. He has duties far higher than currying favor with Mia Farrow.

Doctors' organization: calling abortion bans 'fetal heartbeat bills' is misleading

Doctors' organization: calling abortion bans 'fetal heartbeat bills' is misleadingAmerican College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says term does not 'reflect medical accuracy or clinical understanding' Instead of using "fetal heartbeat bills", as the laws are often called by anti-abortion campaigners, the Guardian will make "six-week abortion ban" the preferred term for the laws, unless quoting someone, in order to better reflect the practical effect of the laws. Photograph: Katherine Frey/The Washington Post/Getty Images America's largest professional organization for doctors specializing in women's health has come out against the term "fetal heartbeat bill" to describe abortion bans recently enacted by US states. The president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists called the bills "arbitrary" bans not reflective of fetal development or science. "Arbitrary gestational age bans on abortion at six weeks that use the term 'heartbeat' to define the gestational development being targeted do not reflect medical accuracy or clinical understanding," said Dr Ted Anderson, president of ACOG. The organization represents 58,000 physicians across the US. Sign up for the US morning briefing "Pregnancy and fetal development are a continuum. What is interpreted as a heartbeat in these bills is actually electrically induced flickering of a portion of the fetal tissue that will become the heart as the embryo develops," Anderson said. "Thus, ACOG does not use the term 'heartbeat' to describe these legislative bans on abortion because it is misleading language, out of step with the anatomical and clinical realities of that stage of pregnancy," Anderson said. The ACOG president called on politicians to base policy on "science and evidence". In addition, the Guardian has updated its style guide more accurately to reflect abortion bans spreading across the United States. Instead of using "fetal heartbeat bills", as the laws are often called by anti-abortion campaigners, the Guardian will make "six-week abortion ban" the preferred term for the laws, unless quoting someone, in order to better reflect the practical effect of the laws. State abortion bans have been enacted from Ohio to Kentucky, in a new and severe strategy from rightwing groups pushing to make abortion illegal. The bans, dubbed "heartbeat" bills by supporters, have the practical effect of banning abortion before most women know they are pregnant. Abortion is legal in all 50 states despite the bans. Anti-abortion campaigners hope the court battles will prompt the US supreme court to reconsider the 1973 landmark decision Roe v Wade, which legalized abortion. The laws are all expected to be challenged in court, and are highly unlikely ever to go into effect. While states have long sought to heavily regulate abortion, outright bans on the procedure were once rare. Nevertheless, abortion care has not always remained accessible. Highly restrictive state regulations have driven many clinics out of business. There are six states that each have only one abortion clinic. In Missouri, the state's last remaining abortion clinic is fighting the state health authorities in order to stay open. Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr Sarah Horvath said that accurately describing the bans is important, to avoid confusion among patients and providers alike. "I don't think the coverage tends to line up with medical reality," said Horvath. "No one seems to know what is allowed – and what isn't – even when it's medically appropriate," she said. Several state bans allow for criminal penalties for doctors performing abortions, including a 99-year penalty in Alabama. Physicians said the bans, if they ever went into effect, will have life-threatening consequences for women. "There's this noble ideal you all have," she said about reporters, but added, "But one is a viewpoint, and one is science and medicine."

TSMC expects short-term impact from U.S. ban on China's HuaweiWashington's move to ban U.S. companies from doing business with China's Huawei Technologies will have a short-term impact on Taiwan's TSMC, its chairman said on Wednesday, although he was upbeat on the outlook for this year. TSMC previously said shipments to its main client Huawei were not affected by U.S. action aimed at curbing the telecom equipment maker's access to American technology, and that it would continue to be a supplier to Huawei. "It certainly will have some impact in the short term," TSMC Chairman Mark Liu told reporters at the company's annual general meeting in the technology hub of Hsinchu.

Stocks higher on hopes of Fed rate cut as oil prices plunge

Stocks higher on hopes of Fed rate cut as oil prices plungeStock markets rose on Wednesday, extending a Wall Street rally sparked by dovish Federal Reserve statements, while oil prices fell dramatically due to an unexpected jump in US inventories. A day after surging by two percent, Wall Street's main exchanges pushed higher in midday trading, despite new US payrolls data showing that hiring crashed last month. The US rally on Tuesday came after Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell opened the door to a potential interest rate cut, saying ongoing trade conflicts had dimmed the growth outlook and the Fed would be watchful as a result to ensure the economy remained on track.
