Democrats demand answers on Trump's approach to IranDemocratic lawmakers demanded clarity Wednesday about the Trump administration's position on the use of military force as they sought answers on how the White House plans to address rising tensions with Iran. The lawmakers specifically pointed to what they called tenuous links between Iran and al-Qaida that they fear the administration could use to justify a military attack under an authorization granted by Congress after the Sept. 11 attacks. The U.S. special envoy for Iran, Brian Hook, told the House Committee on Foreign Affairs that questions about the authorization would be better answered by a lawyer.

Jose Vega Meza, a 21-year-old living in a suburb outside of Phoenix, Arizona, has been arrested over suspicion of mutilating the animal. When she opened the box, she found her headless dog inside. Airbus demands chance to bid for IAG's surprise Boeing 737 MAX orderAirbus called on Thursday for a chance to compete for a blockbuster plane order by British Airways owner IAG, which stunned industry executives at this week's Paris Airshow by ordering 200 of Boeing's grounded 737 MAX. Airbus announced a new version of its best-selling A321 with close to 240 orders and commitments in Paris, only to see its grip on IAG's European short-haul networks damaged by the Boeing deal which analysts said shores up the embattled 737 MAX. Boeing's top-selling aircraft has been taken out of service worldwide since an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crashed in March, five months after a Lion Air 737 MAX plunged into the sea off Indonesia.

Could This Old School Gun Be Better than a Glock?

Could This Old School Gun Be Better than a Glock?Truth be told I tend to shy away from comparing any revolver cartridge to any semi-auto handgun cartridge. It's an apples-to-oranges type of comparison — there's no practical reason for it, so ultimately, it's pointless. And I'm also a wheelgun guy so I'm a little biased toward revolver cartridges. But having written a few handgun caliber comparison articles in the past, from time to time I would get emails from some of our readers asking me to do such a comparison. I would always tell them to just look somewhere else to satisfy their caliber-wars curiosity because I couldn't care less about these types of comparisons. I'd rather avoid opening a can of worms — these types of comparisons lead to debates that can get ugly real fast.Recently, a good friend of mine purchased a Ruger LCRx chambered for the 9mm. After trying it out in the range, he brought it to me and asked me to shoot a few rounds and tell me what I think about it.

UPDATE 2-Harley-Davidson strikes deal to build smaller bike in China

UPDATE 2-Harley-Davidson strikes deal to build smaller bike in ChinaHarley-Davidson Inc will partner with China's Qianjiang Motorcycle Co to build a new smaller motorcycle than its trademark "big hogs", making good on promises to move more production outside the United States that have angered President Donald Trump. Trump last year threatened to impose higher taxes on Harley after it made plans to move production for European customers overseas, part of a longer-term strategy for dealing with lower sales in the U.S. and higher costs because of trade tariffs. The partnership Harley outlined on Wednesday is aimed both at taking a bigger chunk of China's huge bike and moped market, while also fitting in with a plan to cut costs and source half of all sales outside the United States by 2027.

Attack mine used on Japanese oil tanker bears 'striking resemblance' to Iranian weapon

Attack mine used on Japanese oil tanker bears 'striking resemblance' to Iranian weaponA US military expert claimed on Wednesday that explosives allegedly used to attack a Japanese-owned oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz bore a "striking resemblance" to limpet mines publicly displayed by Iran. The US made the presentation as the administration of Donald Trump has come under criticism from both domestic rivals and longstanding international American allies for its handling of Iran policy. Some experts saying attacks on ships as well as recent rocket attacks targeting US installations in Iraq appear designed to roil Washington, and up the costs of its hardline Iran policy. US Navy Cmdr. Sean Kido, described as an explosives expert, spoke to journalists in Fujairah, one of the seven monarchies that make up the United Arab Emirates, which has been a leading cheerleader of Washington's "maximum pressure campaign" against Iran. Both ships attacked last week are moored off the UAE coast.Commander Kido showed reporters pieces of debris and a magnet they he claimed Iran's Revolutionary Guard left behind when allegedly removed an unexploded mine after the 13 June attack in the Gulf of Oman. Iran has not acknowledged taking any mine, and a video shown by the US military claiming Iranian officials were removing a mine appears inconclusive. "The limpet mine that was used does bear a striking resemblance to that which has been publicly displayed in Iranian military parades," Commander Kido said, according to the Associated Press. "There are distinguishing features.""The damage we observed is consistent with a limpet mine attack," he reportedly said. But he declined to describe what those distinguishing features were. Iran has denied being involved in the attack last Thursday that hit the Japanese tanker Kokuka Courageous and also the Norwegian-owned Front Altair last week.Former US intelligence and security officials have strongly criticised Washington's handling of the attacks, which have created tensions between Iran hawks and Democrats different factions on Capitol Hill. But independent analysts and scholars say Iran was likely behind it. "Iran is a strong culprit, anything is else just conspiracy theory," said one former US intelligence officer. "But nobody trusts Bolton, Trump, or Pompeo. Lots of bluster and no substance."Commander Kido said unspecified authorities also recovered a fingerprints from one of the ships, which can be used in a criminal prosecution. It remained unclear why the US military is investigating an attack on two foreign-owned vessels carrying non-US goods between non-US destinations. The monarchical rulers of both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the nations from which the vessels departed, are close to the White House. In recent days, rockets have landed on or near the facilities of US military officials in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and a compound housing international oil officials in Basra. Iranian hardliners have vowed for months to use various tools at their disposal to exact a price for tightening US sanctions on Iran that followed Washington torpedoing of the painstakingly crafted 2015 nuclear deal. The Trump administration has come under criticism by lawmakers and international officials for pushing a confrontation with Iran based on leaks and whispers of wrongdoing by Tehran, with scant evidence or public debate.Iran maybe seeking administration's Iran policy has become so toxic and politicised that it creates an opening for Iran to stage attacks that give Washington hawks just enough reason to accuse Iran, while allowing just enough doubt for critics to accuse them of warmongering. "Does the IRGC Quds force have the ability to do what it needs to do?" said the former intelligence official, who served in the Middle East. "It does,"

New study to examine feeding habits of Cape Cod great whites

New study to examine feeding habits of Cape Cod great whitesResearchers on Cape Cod are launching a new study focused on the hunting and feeding habits of the region's great white sharks following last year's two attacks on humans, including the state's first fatal one in more than 80 years. The hope is that the work, which starts in the coming days, contributes critical information to the ongoing debate over how to keep Cape beachgoers safe, said state marine biologist Greg Skomal, who has been studying the region's great whites for years and is leading the new effort. Cape Cod officials have been wrestling with how to respond to public concern in the aftermath of last year's attacks.

Hypersonic Weapons Are Almost Here (And They Will Change War Forever)

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 03:05 AM PDT

Hypersonic Weapons Are Almost Here (And They Will Change War Forever)A new technological competition has begun, one in which America's rivals, particularly Russia and China, may be ahead. This is the race to build and put in the field super-fast or hypersonic weapons and vehicles. The military defines a hypersonic weapon as one that travels at least Mach 5 or five times the speed of sound. In comparison, commercial aircraft fly at around Mach 1 while some military jets can push themselves to around Mach 3, but only for a short time. There are two basic types of hypersonic weapons: super-fast cruise missiles, and boost-glide vehicles that are mounted on ballistic missiles. Hypersonic cruise missiles, which would most commonly be launched from aircraft, maintain powered flight from launch to impact. Boost-glide vehicles are lofted by a ballistic missile launched from an aircraft, ship, submarine or ground unit to the edge of space from which point they use their speed and aerodynamic design to skip along the top of the atmosphere for up to 10,000 miles.

Galaxy Note 10 leak reveals a futuristic feature you won’t find on any iPhone

Galaxy Note 10 leak reveals a futuristic feature you won't find on any iPhoneThe Galaxy Note 10, now expected to launch on August 7th, is hardly a secret anymore. We've seen plenty of leaks that have confirmed the phone's design and even the sky-high price tag has been outed. The Note 10 will come in two sizes, both featuring the same Infinity-O display that will have curved edges with tiny top and bottom bezels. In many ways, the Galaxy Note 10 will be similar to the Galaxy S10 when it comes to specs, but an insider now claims the phone will have a futuristic feature that no other popular smartphone has -- not even the iPhone. If this rumor is accurate, it will give Samsung an advantage over almost all competitors out there when it comes to design.Ice Universe, a reliable Samsung leaker, explained on Twitter that the Note 10 will have bezels as narrow as the iPhone, and that's possible thanks to a new display innovation: Sound on Display (SoD) tech.https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1141244216992866304Instead of having to place a speaker at the top of the phone, Samsung can turn the screen itself into a speaker. This tech has been in the making for quite a while, and Samsung is one of the two companies that can pull it off. The other one is LG, which launched its LG V8 ThinQ earlier this year, the world's first phone with SoD tech. LG, however, hasn't been able to match Samsung for a long time when it comes to flagship smartphone sales. The Galaxy S10 still features a speaker at the top. It's almost invisible, but it's there. SoD screens will allow Samsung and every other company that sources OLED screens from Samsung Display to further reduce the size of their top bezels. The iPhone 11, meanwhile, isn't expected to drop the front-facing speaker anytime soon, and certainly not this year on the iPhone 11. Apple is rumored to stick with the same iPhone X notch design for at least one more generation of handsets, which means the front speaker isn't going anywhere for the time being. Google's Pixel 4, one other highly anticipated handset of the second half of 2019, will also have a speaker at the top, right in the middle of a pretty thick top bezel.

Woman whose dead babies were found in home cleared of murderA Massachusetts woman who lived in a squalid, vermin-infested home where authorities found the remains of three babies was cleared Thursday of second-degree murder, but was convicted of lesser charges. Judge Janet Kenton-Walker said prosecutors did not prove that 35-year-old Erika Murray caused the death of one of the babies whom she had been charged with killing and hiding in her home filled with rodents, dead animals, dirty diapers and trash. Kenton-Walker called the case "senseless" and "tragic," but said she had to be guided by the evidence rather than her emotions.

How the Death of This Aircraft Carrier Insured America Would Win World War IICommissioned on December 14, 1927, the Lady Lex, as she became affectionately known, participated with the Saratoga in her first fleet problem on January 23-27, 1929, when Rear Admiral Joseph M. "Bull" Reeves, the U.S. Battle Fleet's air commander, demonstrated carrier tactics with a simulated attack against the Panama Canal.Responding to a November 27, 1941, war warning message from Admiral Harold R. "Betty" Stark, chief of naval operations, America's prized handful of aircraft carriers were fortuitously absent from Pearl Harbor when Japanese planes savaged the Pacific Fleet on Sunday, December 7.The USS Saratoga (CV-3) was refitting in San Diego, the USS Enterprise (CV-6) was returning after ferrying fighters to the Marine Corps defense force on Wake Island, the USS Wasp (CV-7) was serving with the Royal Navy Home Fleet in the Mediterranean, the USS Yorktown (CV-5) was at Norfolk, Virginia, and the USS Lexington (CV-2) was carrying a squadron of Vought SB2U Vindicator dive bombers to the tiny Marine garrison on Midway Island. This first appeared in September 2017.But the sorely needed planes were not delivered. When word came of the Pearl Harbor attack, the Lexington, still 400 miles southeast of Midway, turned and headed southward. She spent several days with other U.S. ships searching unsuccessfully south of Oahu for the Japanese flattops and returned to Pearl Harbor for refueling and reprovisioning.
