Ex-Christie associate gets two years in prison in 'Bridgegate' scandalBy Joseph Ax NEWARK, N.J. (Reuters) - A former associate of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison for his role in the "Bridgegate" lane closure scandal that played a part in torpedoing the Republican's White House ambitions. Bill Baroni, 45, the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was found guilty in November of plotting to close down access lanes at the heavily used George Washington Bridge in 2013 in an act of political retribution. Prosecutors said the massive traffic jam they deliberately created in the town of Fort Lee was intended to punish its Democratic mayor for refusing to back Christie's re-election bid, as the governor's aides tried to burnish his bipartisan credentials in advance of his run for president.

Spicer said the new material was discovered by national security staffers "in the ordinary course of business." He said a letter had been sent, offering to make the information available to House intelligence committee Chairman Devin Nunes and ranking member Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and to the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee. A word of warning to anyone who hasn’t already updated to iOS 10.3

Posted: 30 Mar 2017 03:57 PM PDT

A word of warning to anyone who hasn't already updated to iOS 10.3

Earlier this week, Apple put an end to the beta madness and released iOS 10.3 to the public. Don't worry, a new developer beta — iOS 10.3.2 — was promptly released the very next day. We already told you about all the best new features in iOS 10.3, and we also drew attention to one feature in particular, a hidden change that gives the iPhone and iPad a nice little speed boost. If you haven't already updated though, there's one feature that we should warn you about because we've received a handful of emails from people who have run into some serious problems.

Among the behind-the-scenes changes in iOS 10.3, Apple's move to a new file system is clearly the biggest. Prior to iOS 10.3, all iOS devices used the popular HFS+ file system. Beginning with iOS 10.3, however, Apple has moved to the more modern Apple File System (APFS).

There are a number of advantages to switching to Apple's new file system, but the big ones are better optimization for NAND flash storage and SSD storage, more accurate time stamping, and support for stronger encryption. HFS+ is 30 years old at this point, so it was clearly time for a change.

Here's the problem, however: once you update your phone to iOS 10.3 and your file system is converted to APFS, you can no longer roll back without wiping your phone and reinstalling an older iOS build. Why is that significant? Because if something goes wrong and you roll back to an older build, you'll no longer be able to recover data because everything will have been converted to APFS.

So, a word of warning: Back. Up.

If you haven't already upgraded to iOS 10.3, be sure to back up all of your data before you do. This can be done either with iCloud (Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now) or by backing up using iTunes. It might take a little while, but waiting a few minutes while your iPhone backs up is much less aggravating than losing some or even all of your data.

California to seek death penalty in salon massacre

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:09 PM PDT

California to seek death penalty in salon massacreCalifornia's attorney general said on Wednesday his office would press ahead in seeking the death penalty for a man who pleaded guilty to killing eight people in a 2011 shooting rampage, even though local prosecutors were sanctioned for acting improperly. The state's top elected law enforcement official assumed responsibility for the penalty phase of the case against Scott Dekraai after a California appeals court upheld a lower-court order recusing the Orange County District Attorney's Office over prosecutorial misconduct. Defense lawyers sought to remove local prosecutors and bar them from seeking the death penalty on grounds that jailhouse informants were improperly used to wring a confession from Dekraai.

Warning: Don’t believe phone scammers who say your iCloud account was hacked

Warning: Don't believe phone scammers who say your iCloud account was hacked

There's a group of hackers out there that claims it can reset hundreds of millions of iPhones by using stolen iCloud credentials. The attack should occur on April 7th unless Apple pays a ransom, but the iPhone maker denied having its servers breached. If the threat is real, it uses data taken from previous breaches. Information gained from previous hacks might be used to reset iPhones, a report showed, but it's not clear what the scope of the attack would be. So far, the hackers seem to be interested in getting as much publicity as possible.

But other scammers have developed a different iCloud con, one that's getting more traction thanks to all the news detailing the potential attack on April 7th. The scammers call unsuspecting iPhone users to tell them their iCloud accounts have been hacked. Whatever you may think, don't believe them — your iCloud account is probably safe.

The scammers pretend to call you from Apple's support department, Business Insider explains, and many people posted on Twitter to detail their experiences with this new iCloud con.

https://twitter.com/steffartnieee/status/846480180923183104

The callers, who seem to be targeting users at random, will tell you that your iCloud account was hacked, and they will ask for your credentials to verify your identity. The log-in information can then be used by an attacker to sign into the victim's iCloud account, make purchases, access protected messages and backups, and more.

Furthermore, Macworld points out that scammers may insist on installing antivirus software on your computer, which is likely malware ready to steal more data from unsuspecting victims.

https://twitter.com/HenryKIRO7/status/847238485580718080

If you believe that your iCloud account was hacked, change the password yourself on a machine you know to be secure, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. You can even contact Apple yourself, but don't fall for this scam.

'El Chapo' prison conditions worst in U.S., prevent proper defense: lawyers

'El Chapo' prison conditions worst in U.S., prevent proper defense: lawyersHeld without access to sunlight or his relatives, Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is under more restrictive captivity than any other U.S. prisoner and it is difficult to mount a defense, his court appointed lawyers said on Thursday. Mexico extradited Guzman, who is the head of Sinaloa Cartel, to New York in January, a few hours before U.S. President Donald Trump took office. Guzman, who escaped from two Mexican prisons and was a key figure in a bloody drug war, is seen as a flight risk by the U.S. government.

Venezuela's Maduro decried as 'dictator' after Congress annulled

Venezuela's Maduro decried as 'dictator' after Congress annulledBy Diego Oré and Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Opposition leaders branded Venezuela's socialist President Nicolas Maduro a "dictator" on Thursday after the Supreme Court took over the functions of Congress and pushed a lengthy political standoff to new heights. There was swift and widespread international condemnation of the de facto annulment of the National Assembly, where the opposition won a majority in late 2015 amid an unprecedented economic crisis that has seen Maduro's popularity plummet. The head of the 34-nation Organization of International States (OAS), Luis Almagro, said the Venezuelan court had dealt the final blows to democracy and accused Maduro's "regime" of carrying out a "coup." Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala and Panama expressed strong concerns while Peru withdrew its envoy after what it termed a rupture of democracy.

U.S. priority on Syria no longer focused on 'getting Assad out': HaleyBy Michelle Nichols NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States' diplomatic policy on Syria for now is no longer focused on making the war-torn country's president, Bashar al-Assad, leave power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on Thursday, in a departure from the Obama administration's initial and public stance on Assad's fate. The view of the Trump administration is also at odds with European powers, who insist Assad must step down. "You pick and choose your battles and when we're looking at this, it's about changing up priorities and our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out," U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told a small group of reporters.

China says 'no such thing' as man-made islands in South China SeaThere was "no such thing" as man-made islands in the disputed South China Sea, China's Defence Ministry said on Thursday, and reiterated that any building work was mainly for civilian purposes. Completely insane architects are planning to hang a skyscraper from an asteroid

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 03:00 PM PDT

Completely insane architects are planning to hang a skyscraper from an asteroidWords like "insane," "crazy," and "nuts" get thrown around a lot — I use them more than my fair share, if I'm being honest — but a New York design group just revealed plans for a new type of skyscraper that really can't be described any other way. Their plan is to construct a huge structure on the surface of an asteroid and, believe it or not, that's probably the most rational part of the proposal. Clouds Architecture Office is the firm that wants to build the massive skyscraper, which it calls Analemma Tower. The structure, which at this point is completely conceptual and likely completely impossible, would require that an asteroid be captured and brought into near-Earth orbit. With anchor points on the asteroid, the building is designed to — this is the part where things go completely off the rails — hang completely upside down, using the asteroid like a gravitational balloon to hold the structure in place above the Earth's surface. The tower would be in eccentric geosynchronous orbit, and would "travel" between hemispheres on a regular daily schedule, and in a figure eight pattern. The architects say the tower would spend much of its time over New York City thanks to its planned trajectory. The building could remain completely disconnected from the surface indefinitely by drawing power from solar panels situated above cloud level. Water would be filtered within the structure in a semi-closed loop, but the tower could also capture its own water while in-flight. As far as traveling to and from the tower, the concept suggests that people could just parachute down to Earth whenever they needed to leave. As for getting back home, the company doesn't seem to have nailed down exactly how that will work, but by the time the tower is actually built we'll probably have teleportation pads, too.

US-led coalition 'probably' had role in Mosul civilian casualties

US-led coalition 'probably' had role in Mosul civilian casualtiesThe US-led anti-jihadist coalition said Tuesday it "probably" played a role in civilian casualties in west Mosul, as the UN and Amnesty International called for greater efforts to protect civilians. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are still inside west Mosul, caught up in deadly fighting between the Islamic State group and Iraqi forces who are backed by coalition air strikes in the battle to retake the area from the jihadists. West Mosul is both smaller and more densely populated than the city's east, meaning that this stage of the battle poses a greater danger to civilians than those that came before.

Elon Musk explains why drivers won’t care about the Model 3’s bizarre dashboard design

Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:30 PM PDT

Elon Musk explains why drivers won't care about the Model 3's bizarre dashboard designWhen Tesla unveiled the Model 3 last year, tech and auto observers couldn't help but notice that the car lacked an instrument cluster. Instead, Tesla representatives suggested that drivers would be able to ascertain all the information they needed right from the car's 15-inch tablet located on the center console. Because the design Tesla showed off was so outside the norm, many Tesla enthusiasts began speculating that Tesla must have a cool and advanced design it was planning to show us later on down the line. This speculation was only fueled by coy remarks from Tesla CEO Elon Musk who said via Twitter that everything would all make sense soon enough. Responding to a question about the lack of a dashboard/HUD, Musk last April said that "it will make sense after part 2 of the Model 3 unveil." Of course, part 2 of the Model 3 unveil came and went and we still didn't hear anything about Tesla's plans for the dashboard area. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Tesla's plans to incorporate a futuristic HUD on the Model 3 began to grow wildly. Looking to keep expectations grounded, Musk over the past few days has come out and said that the Model 3 will not have a HUD and that users won't really care. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/846768171486855169 https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/846768497904369664 Musk later added that drivers don't need an instrument cluster on the dash because "the more autonomous a car is, the less dash info you need." Driving the point home, Musk asked the following question: "How often do you look at the instrument panel when being driven in a taxi?" All that said, the Model 3 dashboard will more or less look like this. While such a design may make sense in a world where cars are fully autonomous, the reality is that many drivers today not only want, but need quick and easy access to pertinent information like range, speed and more. Addressing this, Musk took to Twitter once again where he explained that the final Model 3 design will display such information on the center console. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/847178475970547712

Westeros can't handle the perfection of this 'Game of Thrones' wedding

Westeros can't handle the perfection of this 'Game of Thrones' weddingIf you're going to do a themed wedding — particularly a Game of Thrones wedding — you better get it right.  Well, sometimes miracles do happen and we all feel really bad about making fun of themed weddings. Case in point: the Game of Thrones wedding shoot Katie Lee of Katherine Elena Photography recently helped to design. The photographer took pains to make sure every detail accurately reflected the show for couples who wanted to follow the theme. While it didn't include an actual couple getting married, the stylized wedding conception will surely inspire many lovebirds in the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. SEE ALSO: Everything we know about 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Lee explained her process: "The gowns had a lot to do with finding a happy medium between fantasy and wedding as well," Lee told Mashable. "We knew that we wanted some sort of cape for Austen (who was playing Daenarys) with a very ethereal dress. For Courtney (playing Sansa), we wanted something regal and girly, but very strong. The velvet was the perfect fabric for that and the fur cuffs and stole along with the long train were perfect for her. " Image: katherine elena photography The wedding shoot was filmed at an actual "Castle" in the Blue Ridge mountains. Lee wanted to make a wedding that was simultaneously fantastical but realistic so that other couples could incorporate the theme into their weddings. "I also really wanted to highlight the strong women of the show and show off their grace and beauty, but also their power," Lee said. iOS 11’s big feature could be a massive Siri upgrade

iOS 11's big feature could be a massive Siri upgrade

While there's an abundance of iPhone 8 rumors to check out on a regular basis, we don't see that many iOS 11 leaks. It's surprising, given that iOS represents one of the most important features of the iPhone and a reason why many people would not leave Apple's platform for any competing mobile operating system. A new report out of Israel brings says that Siri will get a massive upgrade in iOS 11, revealing some of the new purported features of Apple's smarter virtual assistant.

According to The Verifier, Siri will gain more powers on all of Apple's devices, including iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. The most important features, if the report is accurate, seem to be Siri integration in iMessage and iCloud.

Siri in iMessage would probably work very similarly to what Google's Assistant inside Google Allo. The assistant would be ready to offer context-based suggestions, like where to go to dinner and how to get there. Apple already has a patent detailing such a feature.

The iCloud integration would allow Siri to identify the user's various devices that might be associated with an Apple ID, and offer actions and responses across operating systems, including Mac and iPhone.

Siri would reportedly learn more details about the user's habits, and offer different actions based on the context, not just in iMessage, the report indicates. The report says Siri will be comparable to Bixby when it comes to feature, which is Samsung's recently introduced voice-based assistant. Bixby, however, is yet to prove itself as it'll only launch in limited form with the Galaxy S8.

Considering that everyone is beefing up their virtual assistants, it's likely Apple will upgrade Siri in iOS 11, even though there's no way of verifying The Verifier's interesting claims at this point.
