Burkina links Ivory Coast jihadist with hotel attack in capital Posted: 24 Mar 2017 12:40 PM PDT A jihadist accused of masterminding a deadly attack in Ivory Coast is also suspected of having planned a major assault in Burkina Faso's capital last year, a senior official said Friday. Ivorian officials believe Mimi Ould Baba Ould Cheikh organised the gun and grenade attack that left 19 people dead last March at the beach resort of Grand-Bassam, which is popular with foreigners. Now he is also believed to have been "head of operations" for the attack on a hotel and cafe in Ouagadougou in January 2016 that killed 30 people, said Colonel Serge Alain Ouedraogo of the Burkinabe gendarmerie. |

The state carrier and other airlines said they would bar Ravindra Gaikwad from flying after the fracas which has triggered a debate on the behavior of members of the political elite, and calls for a no-fly list for unruly passengers. Gaikwad, from the Shiv Sena party, allies of India's ruling BJP, did not apologize for Thursday's confrontation and told reporters he had been badly treated. |

Adrenalin-fueled TV drama to spur on China's war on graft Posted: 23 Mar 2017 09:13 PM PDT By Christian Shepherd BEIJING (Reuters) - Helicopter chases, fridges full of cash and officials caught in bed with their foreign mistresses are all in a day's work for China's anti-graft prosecutors, according to a new state-backed TV drama aimed at bolstering China's graft fight. "In the Name of the People", a new show by propaganda department of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), China's top prosecutor, follows an intrepid SPP anti-graft investigator sent to a fictional province from Beijing to tackle corruption at the highest levels of local officialdom. Chinese President Xi Jinping's has pledged that his multi-year war on graft, which has netted tens of thousands of officials, will continue until corruption is fully expunged, warning that the rot could threaten the ruling Communist Party's existence if not cleared. |

Philippines leader scolds EU for 'idiotic' drug rehab solution Posted: 24 Mar 2017 03:43 AM PDT (Advisory: This story contains strong language in paragraph one and four) MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte hit out at the European Union on Friday for hypocrisy and called the bloc "sons of bitches" after its lawmakers issued a resolution calling for restraint and a rethink in his bloody war on drugs. Duterte castigated the EU for urging him to focus his campaign on drugs rehabilitation and stood by his security-centered approach to a crackdown that has left thousands of people dead since he took office nine months ago. The EU, they communicated to us, and they want a health-based solution for the drugs. |

South Korea raises sunken Sewol ferry Posted: 23 Mar 2017 10:57 AM PDT South Korea's sunken Sewol ferry emerged from the waters Thursday, nearly three years after it went down with the loss of more than 300 lives and dealt a crushing blow to now-ousted president Park Geun-Hye. The complex operation -- one of the largest raisings of an entire ship ever attempted -- comes as the third anniversary approaches of one of the country's worst-ever maritime disasters. Almost all the dead were schoolchildren and it is thought that nine bodies still unaccounted for may be trapped inside the sunken ship. |

Pete Souza joins chorus gloating over Trumpcare failure with epic Instagram Posted: 24 Mar 2017 02:15 PM PDT The schadenfreude online when Trumpcare collapsed for a second time was deafening. However, amid all the resurfaced Trump tweets and Art of the Deal jokes one troll stood out once again. Pete Souza, Obama's official White House photographer, added another Instagram post to his mammoth shade collection against Trump after the news broke Friday. SEE ALSO: Obama's official White House photographer is Insta-trolling Trump This time, Souza shared a photo of Obama and Mike Pence from 2010 — and the caption was devastating. "Before voting on the Affordable Care Act in 2010, President Obama met with many members of Congress on both side of the aisle over the course of many months," he wrote. "This picture was taken at the end of a multiple hours-long meeting with the entire Republican House caucus in which he responded to dozens of questions and critiques. It was carried live on cable TV." In other words, Obama knew that healthcare was — you know — complicated, and worked hard with Republicans and Democrats, in the glare of the media, to get the ACA pushed through. An approach that differs, you may say, from Trump's efforts this week. Before voting on the Affordable Care Act in 2010, President Obama met with many members of Congress on both sides of the aisle over the course of many months. This picture was taken at the end of a multiple hours-long meeting with the entire Republican House caucus in which he responded to dozens of questions and critiques. It was carried live on cable TV. A post shared by Pete Souza (@petesouza) on Mar 24, 2017 at 1:40pm PDT Of course, Souza's lesson to Trump is a bit late now. EU risks dying, needs new vigor and passion, says Pope Francis Posted: 24 Mar 2017 10:56 AM PDT By Crispian Balmer VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis told Europe's leaders on Friday the continent faced a "vacuum of values" as they marked the EU's 60th birthday, condemning anti-immigrant populism and extremism that he said posed a mortal threat to the bloc. Prime ministers and presidents from 27 EU member states have descended on Italy to mark the 1957 founding Treaty of Rome, receiving a papal blessing on the eve of the anniversary. "When a body loses its sense of direction and is no longer able to look ahead, it experiences a regression and, in the long run, risks dying," Francis told the leaders gathered in an ornate, frescoed chamber in the heart of the Vatican. |
