Trump hasn’t ruled out raising the national debt to cut taxes Posted: 30 Mar 2017 03:11 PM PDT WASHINGTON — President Trump may be considering a tax-cut plan that could rankle Republican congressional leadership. While both House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have pushed for deficit-neutral tax cuts, a senior White House official told Yahoo News the president could consider a plan that might add to the national debt. The official cautioned that Trump hasn't settled on a strategy for tax cuts and said it would be "premature" to say he's abandoned the deficit-neutral approach. |

Tillerson says Assad's fate up to Syrian people Posted: 30 Mar 2017 09:38 AM PDT US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Thursday the fate of President Bashar al-Assad was up to the people of Syria, in the clearest indication yet of the new administration's policy in the war-torn country. "I think the... longer term status of president Assad will be decided by the Syrian people," Tillerson told a news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. |

India privately took Amazon to task over insulting flag doormat Posted: 30 Mar 2017 05:25 AM PDT By Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's reaction to an Amazon.com website selling doormats resembling the country's flag involved an unprecedented public and private offensive against the U.S. company by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, a document shows. Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj publicly threatened in January to rescind visas of Amazon employees if the doormats were not removed from its Canadian website. India also escalated the matter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and prompted a global audit by the company to "ensure that such products are not listed on any of its other" websites around the world, according to the document. |

Ex-Christie associate gets two years in prison in 'Bridgegate' scandal Posted: 29 Mar 2017 09:56 AM PDT By Joseph Ax NEWARK, N.J. (Reuters) - A former associate of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison for his role in the "Bridgegate" lane closure scandal that played a part in torpedoing the Republican's White House ambitions. Bill Baroni, 45, the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was found guilty in November of plotting to close down access lanes at the heavily used George Washington Bridge in 2013 in an act of political retribution. Prosecutors said the massive traffic jam they deliberately created in the town of Fort Lee was intended to punish its Democratic mayor for refusing to back Christie's re-election bid, as the governor's aides tried to burnish his bipartisan credentials in advance of his run for president. |

White House finds more ‘material’ on surveillance and offers to share it with Congress Posted: 30 Mar 2017 12:18 PM PDT The White House is offering to share with key congressional leaders "material that has come to light" about the handling of communications intercepts involving American citizens, press secretary Sean Spicer said Thursday. Spicer said the new material was discovered by national security staffers "in the ordinary course of business." He said a letter had been sent, offering to make the information available to House intelligence committee Chairman Devin Nunes and ranking member Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and to the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee. The announcement during Spicer's regular daily press briefing is the latest twist in the controversy that was touched off weeks ago by President Trump's tweet alleging wiretapping of Trump Tower. |
A word of warning to anyone who hasn’t already updated to iOS 10.3 Posted: 30 Mar 2017 03:57 PM PDT Earlier this week, Apple put an end to the beta madness and released iOS 10.3 to the public. Don't worry, a new developer beta — iOS 10.3.2 — was promptly released the very next day. We already told you about all the best new features in iOS 10.3, and we also drew attention to one feature in particular, a hidden change that gives the iPhone and iPad a nice little speed boost. If you haven't already updated though, there's one feature that we should warn you about because we've received a handful of emails from people who have run into some serious problems. Among the behind-the-scenes changes in iOS 10.3, Apple's move to a new file system is clearly the biggest. Prior to iOS 10.3, all iOS devices used the popular HFS+ file system. Beginning with iOS 10.3, however, Apple has moved to the more modern Apple File System (APFS). There are a number of advantages to switching to Apple's new file system, but the big ones are better optimization for NAND flash storage and SSD storage, more accurate time stamping, and support for stronger encryption. HFS+ is 30 years old at this point, so it was clearly time for a change. Here's the problem, however: once you update your phone to iOS 10.3 and your file system is converted to APFS, you can no longer roll back without wiping your phone and reinstalling an older iOS build. Why is that significant? Because if something goes wrong and you roll back to an older build, you'll no longer be able to recover data because everything will have been converted to APFS. So, a word of warning: Back. Up. If you haven't already upgraded to iOS 10.3, be sure to back up all of your data before you do. This can be done either with iCloud (Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now) or by backing up using iTunes. It might take a little while, but waiting a few minutes while your iPhone backs up is much less aggravating than losing some or even all of your data. |
California to seek death penalty in salon massacre Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:09 PM PDT California's attorney general said on Wednesday his office would press ahead in seeking the death penalty for a man who pleaded guilty to killing eight people in a 2011 shooting rampage, even though local prosecutors were sanctioned for acting improperly. The state's top elected law enforcement official assumed responsibility for the penalty phase of the case against Scott Dekraai after a California appeals court upheld a lower-court order recusing the Orange County District Attorney's Office over prosecutorial misconduct. Defense lawyers sought to remove local prosecutors and bar them from seeking the death penalty on grounds that jailhouse informants were improperly used to wring a confession from Dekraai. |

At least 14 dead in IS truck bomb at Baghdad checkpoint Posted: 30 Mar 2017 03:12 AM PDT At least 14 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle at an entrance to Baghdad, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group, officials said Thursday. The blast, which hit the checkpoint at the main southern entrance to the city on Wednesday night, also wounded at least 36 people, the officials said. The jihadist group overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces backed by US-led air strikes have since regained much of the territory they lost. |
Pregnant Giraffe Keeps Anxious Viewers Waiting Posted: 31 Mar 2017 06:17 AM PDT By the morning of March 27, April was "relaxed," and the animal frequently raised and lowered her tail, and experienced "significant mammary change," her caregivers posted on Facebook. Giraffe mothers carry their young for about 15 months, and while April's caregivers observed breeding behavior between April and her mate, Oliver, in the middle of October 2015, it is hard to tell for sure if conception occurred, AAP owner Jordan Patch told Live Science in February. AAP shared photos on March 27 on Facebook that showed the whitish plugs, which look "like dried toothpaste at the end of a tube," Patch added. |
Warning: Don’t believe phone scammers who say your iCloud account was hacked Posted: 30 Mar 2017 08:43 AM PDT There's a group of hackers out there that claims it can reset hundreds of millions of iPhones by using stolen iCloud credentials. The attack should occur on April 7th unless Apple pays a ransom, but the iPhone maker denied having its servers breached. If the threat is real, it uses data taken from previous breaches. Information gained from previous hacks might be used to reset iPhones, a report showed, but it's not clear what the scope of the attack would be. So far, the hackers seem to be interested in getting as much publicity as possible. But other scammers have developed a different iCloud con, one that's getting more traction thanks to all the news detailing the potential attack on April 7th. The scammers call unsuspecting iPhone users to tell them their iCloud accounts have been hacked. Whatever you may think, don't believe them — your iCloud account is probably safe. The scammers pretend to call you from Apple's support department, Business Insider explains, and many people posted on Twitter to detail their experiences with this new iCloud con. https://twitter.com/steffartnieee/status/846480180923183104 The callers, who seem to be targeting users at random, will tell you that your iCloud account was hacked, and they will ask for your credentials to verify your identity. The log-in information can then be used by an attacker to sign into the victim's iCloud account, make purchases, access protected messages and backups, and more. Furthermore, Macworld points out that scammers may insist on installing antivirus software on your computer, which is likely malware ready to steal more data from unsuspecting victims. https://twitter.com/HenryKIRO7/status/847238485580718080 If you believe that your iCloud account was hacked, change the password yourself on a machine you know to be secure, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. You can even contact Apple yourself, but don't fall for this scam. |

'El Chapo' prison conditions worst in U.S., prevent proper defense: lawyers Posted: 30 Mar 2017 01:22 PM PDT Held without access to sunlight or his relatives, Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is under more restrictive captivity than any other U.S. prisoner and it is difficult to mount a defense, his court appointed lawyers said on Thursday. Mexico extradited Guzman, who is the head of Sinaloa Cartel, to New York in January, a few hours before U.S. President Donald Trump took office. Guzman, who escaped from two Mexican prisons and was a key figure in a bloody drug war, is seen as a flight risk by the U.S. government. |
Venezuela's Maduro decried as 'dictator' after Congress annulled Posted: 30 Mar 2017 04:41 PM PDT By Diego Oré and Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Opposition leaders branded Venezuela's socialist President Nicolas Maduro a "dictator" on Thursday after the Supreme Court took over the functions of Congress and pushed a lengthy political standoff to new heights. There was swift and widespread international condemnation of the de facto annulment of the National Assembly, where the opposition won a majority in late 2015 amid an unprecedented economic crisis that has seen Maduro's popularity plummet. The head of the 34-nation Organization of International States (OAS), Luis Almagro, said the Venezuelan court had dealt the final blows to democracy and accused Maduro's "regime" of carrying out a "coup." Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala and Panama expressed strong concerns while Peru withdrew its envoy after what it termed a rupture of democracy. |
Houthi rebels in Yemen threatening strategic strait: US official Posted: 29 Mar 2017 11:37 AM PDT Houthi rebels in Yemen are threatening free movement into and out of the Red Sea with missiles, mines and other sophisticated defenses on a key strait, a top US general said Wednesday. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, a strategic passage for world trade. Bordering it to the east, Yemen is locked in a deadly civil war between government forces backed by an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the Iran-supported Houthis. |

Britain does not expect 50 billion pound Brexit bill: Davis Posted: 30 Mar 2017 01:34 AM PDT Brexit minister David Davis said he did not expect Britain to have to pay 50 billion pounds ($62 billion) to the European Union as part of the Brexit process and said the era of huge sums being paid to Brussels was coming to an end. British media reports have suggested that Britain could have to pay around 50 to 60 billion pounds in order to honor existing budget commitments as it negotiates its departure from the bloc. "We haven't actually had any sort of submission to us from the Commission. |

Valls' nod comes less than a month before the first round of the election on April 23, in which polls show Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen running neck-and-neck. The former premier cited the "risks" of a Le Pen victory in confirming his support for Macron, in an interview with BFM TV. |

U.S. priority on Syria no longer focused on 'getting Assad out': Haley Posted: 30 Mar 2017 06:25 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States' diplomatic policy on Syria for now is no longer focused on making the war-torn country's president, Bashar al-Assad, leave power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on Thursday, in a departure from the Obama administration's initial and public stance on Assad's fate. The view of the Trump administration is also at odds with European powers, who insist Assad must step down. "You pick and choose your battles and when we're looking at this, it's about changing up priorities and our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out," U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told a small group of reporters. |
