There and back: Elon Musk's SpaceX makes history with epic rocket launch and landing

Posted: 30 Mar 2017 03:44 PM PDT

There and back: Elon Musk's SpaceX makes history with epic rocket launch and landingSpaceX did it.  For the first time in its history, the Elon Musk-founded spaceflight company has relaunched a previously flown Falcon 9 booster.  Oh, and they landed it back on Earth again. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's SpaceX is betting big on its rocket launch this week This rocket, which flew a payload to orbit in April 2016 for its first flight, launched at 6:27 p.m. ET, coming back in for its second landing on a drone ship in the ocean about 8.5 minutes later. This was the ninth successful rocket landing for SpaceX.  "We just had an incredible day today," Musk said during a live broadcast of the launch. "The first reflight of an orbital class booster did its mission perfectly, dropped off the second stage, came back and landed on the drone ship, right in the bullseye. It is an amazing day I think for space as a whole for the space industry. It means you can fly and refly an orbit-class booster, which is the most expensive part of the rocket." And just to put the cherry on top of the rocket sundae, SpaceX also managed to recover the fairing housing the satellite after it was successfully deployed.  This launch and landing marks a huge moment for SpaceX's business model and the private spaceflight industry as a whole.  All of the company's plans for the future — including its big ambitions to fly humans to Mars one day — depend on driving down the cost of spaceflight by reusing rocket boosters for multiple launches.  "If they're successful, it proves that they are able to reuse a rocket which is going to significantly lower their cost, which will allow them to be even more competitive than they are now," Bill Ostrove, an aerospace and defense industry analyst at Forecast International, said in an interview before launch.  Falcon 9 first stage has landed on Of Course I Still Love You — world's first reflight of an orbital class rocket. — SpaceX (@SpaceX) March 30, 2017 Traditionally, rocket bodies are discarded after one use, but SpaceX has figured out a way to bring them back to Earth and refurbish them to fly multiple missions.  By flying these rockets multiple times — and eventually only paying to refuel the boosters — Musk thinks his company can greatly drive down the cost of launching payloads and one day people to orbit.  The rocket stage standing on the drone ship. Image: spacex A Falcon 9 rocket costs about $62 million total, but fuel is just a relatively small portion of that. "If one can figure out how to effectively reuse rockets just like airplanes, the cost of access to space will be reduced by as much as a factor of a hundred," Musk has said. "A fully reusable vehicle has never been done before. That really is the fundamental breakthrough needed to revolutionize access to space." In the time since this rocket's first flight in April 2016, SpaceX has refurbished and tested the booster, making sure that it was okay to fly another mission. This nearly year-long turnaround time isn't ideal. Eventually, SpaceX wants to figure out a quick way of turning boosters around and flying them again without much time sitting on the ground.  Other companies are also aiming for reusability. Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin has landed its suborbital New Shepard rocket five times after five launches, and it plans to make its not-yet-built heavy lift rockets reusable in the future as well.  UPDATE: March 30, 2017, 7:58 p.m. EDT This story was updated to include information about the payload fairing and its successful recovery.  WATCH: Relive SpaceX's incredible daytime rocket landing with this video

Strong iPhone 7 sales saved Apple’s manufacturer from record decline

Strong iPhone 7 sales saved Apple's manufacturer from record decline

The fate of Apple and Foxconn, its gargantuan Chinese manufacturing partner, are closely linked. When iPhone and iPad sales flatlined a little around the iPhone 6s era, Foxconn slipped into decline. From Q3 2015 to Q3 2016, Foxconn's revenue was declining on a year-by-year basis. With little structural change in the business, a decline was expected for the fourth quarter of 2016. But once again, analysts underestimated the iPhone 7.

Net profit was up 30 percent for Foxconn compared to the same quarter in 2015, a major jump by any measure. The fact that it beat analysts' predictions of a loss -- and beat it by $660 million -- shows how far off some predictions were. Net profit was T$68.77 billion ($2.26 billion), up from T$52.93 billion in Q4 2015, according to Reuters.

The turnaround was mostly attributed to increased iPhone sales. Apple drives about half of Foxconn's profits, so it makes sense that Apple's record shipment of iPhones in Q4 last year would see Foxconn turn around sharply. Other investments, such as Foxconn's in-house manufacturing robots division and its purchase of screen-maker Sharp, are also starting to pay dividends.

With a strong 2016 final quarter on record, Foxconn is now well set up for a record year. Apple is expected to release three new iPhone models this year, including updates to the iPhone 7 generation and an all-new iPhone 8 (also referred to as the iPhone Edition or iPhone X). Those updates promise a growth in the number of iPhone sales overall, and if the iPhone 8 actually sells for more than $1,000 as has been rumored, the profit margin on every iPhone could also go up.

Add in a revamped iPad line with a new budget model, and things are looking rosy for Foxconn.

U.S. signals policy decision soon on Russian arms treaty allegationsBy Phil Stewart and Kylie MacLellan LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis signaled on Friday Washington might soon decide how to respond to what it says are Russian violations of a Cold War-era arms control agreement, saying the United States was conferring with allies. Washington and Moscow have long questioned each other's commitment to the INF treaty, which banned nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of 500-5,500 km (300-3,400 miles). The United States has accused Moscow of developing and fielding a ground-launched cruise missile, in violation of its INF Treaty obligations.

Apple’s MacBook Pro dongle sale ends today, but there are cheaper options anyway

Apple's MacBook Pro dongle sale ends today, but there are cheaper options anyway

When Apple introduced its revamped MacBook Pro lineup last fall, the backlash was immediate. From complaints about a 16GB ceiling on RAM to concerns about the utility of the Touch Bar, many developers and creative professionals were quick to categorize Apple's new notebook lineup as overpriced and under-powered.

Many Apple enthusiasts also took umbrage with the design of the MacBook Pro itself, specifically lambasting Apple for removing a number of beloved and useful ports, including the MagSafe 2 charging port, the HDMI port, and the standard USB port. Instead, Apple's new MacBook Pro design featured four Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, effectively forcing many users intent on maintaining their workflow to invest in any number of dongles.

Acquiescing to customer complaints about Apple's port revamp, Apple last November began offering users significant discounts on various dongles to help ease the pain.

Conceding that the new MacBook Pro might require a period of transition, an Apple spokesperson at the time said: "We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem."

Apple's dongle sale was only supposed to last until 2016, but Apple, showing its users some mercy, decided to extend its adapter and dongle sale until March 31.

Translation? If you have a MacBook Pro and are keen on picking up one of Apple's many dongles at a nice discount, you'll want to act today.

Now if you're not ready to make a purchase today or are perhaps looking for even better savings on various MacBook Pro dongles, there are a number of affordable alternatives available on Amazon that you might want to check out as well.

Listed below are a few of the better deals we've seen in recent weeks.

Priced reasonably at $26, you can pick up the AUKEY USB C Hub 3 which features 3 USB 3.0 Ports, 1 Ethernet port, and 1 Type-C input charging port. The AUKEY USB C Hub 4, meanwhile, offers up 4 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI port and 1 Type C input charging port for just $43.

For an even more affordable option, HooToo's USB C Hub retails for just $12 and features 3 USB 3.0 ports and an SD Card reader.

US Congress rolls back family planning funding protections

US Congress rolls back family planning funding protectionsUS Republican lawmakers on Thursday successfully rolled back Obama-era rules protecting funding to clinics that offer abortion services, as Vice President Mike Pence broke a Senate tie on the contentious measure. The rules had prevented states from withholding certain federal money -- distributed under a "Title X" program that funds family planning clinics used in large measure by low-income Americans -- to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, for years have sought to defund Planned Parenthood and other clinics that provide abortion.
