Suspect in Russia metro bombing traveled to Turkey, say co-workers Posted: 09 Apr 2017 05:13 AM PDT (This April 8 story corrects spelling of suspect's family name in paragraphs 26-27) By Polina Nikolskaya and Hulkar Isamova ST PETERSBURG, Russia/OSH, Kyrgyzstan (Reuters) - The man Russian police believe was the suicide bomber who killed 14 people in a blast on the St Petersburg metro this week developed an interest in Islam and soon after traveled to Turkey, two people who know him told Reuters. The two people said they did not know for sure if the man, Akbarzhon Jalilov, went on from Turkey to neighboring Syria. Turkey has been routinely used by radical Islamists as a route into areas of Syria controlled by the Islamic State group. |
Near Mosul, soldiers and displaced meet at the spa Posted: 10 Apr 2017 04:27 AM PDT Hammam al-Alil (Iraq) (AFP) - Hammam al-Alil's sulphur springs and reopened spa have become a spot where the soldiers fighting in Mosul and the civilians fleeing it meet for a rare moment of relaxation. "We fight on the front line and we come here when we get leave," said Sahad Mohammed Jaber, a 32-year-old member of a federal police artillery unit. Hammam al-Alil lies a half-hour drive south of the front line in west Mosul, where thousands of Iraqi forces are attempting to root out diehard Islamic State group jihadists defending their last major bastion in Iraq. |

The Alexandria bombing was carried out by an Islamic State militant it identified as Abu Al-Baraa Al-Masri, while the Tanta church bombing was carried out by an individual it named as Abu Ishaaq Al-Masri. |
Kremlin, angry at Syria missile strike, says Putin won't meet Tillerson Posted: 10 Apr 2017 09:31 AM PDT By Maria Tsvetkova and Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Monday that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will not meet President Vladimir Putin when he visits Moscow on Wednesday, a move that could point to tensions over a U.S. missile attack on a Syrian air base last week. John Kerry, Tillerson's predecessor, often met Putin as well as the Russian foreign minister when he visited Moscow, and Putin granted several audiences to the Texan when he ran oil major Exxon Mobil before taking his current job. Putin even personally awarded Tillerson a top Russian state award -- the Order of Friendship -- in 2013, and it was widely expected that the former oilman would meet Putin on what is his first trip to Russia as secretary of state. |

Serbian president-elect accused of poll fraud Posted: 09 Apr 2017 11:27 AM PDT Serbian president-elect Aleksandar Vucic's main poll rival accused the former premier Sunday of "scandalous irregularities" in the election which handed him victory earlier this month. Centre-left candidate Sasa Jankovic, who garnered 16 percent in the April 2 first-round poll compared to 55 percent for Vucic, called for a partial recount. Thousands of demonstrators, mostly students, have gathered daily in Belgrade and other cities to protest Vucic's election, but this is the first time one of his rivals has alleged poll irregularities. |

New York architects are planning this giant electric car charging tower for Shanghai Posted: 09 Apr 2017 10:29 AM PDT Electric cars are the future of transportation — or at least a big part of the future of transportation — but charging them is still an undeniable hassle. Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric cars and trucks can't simply get a quick tank full of electricity and then zip off a few minutes later. So what will be the future of gas stations when gas becomes a secondary option? New York's Ennead Architects think they've got a good idea, and it's a giant charging tower that scoops up electric cars so it can move them out of the way while they're being charged.
The firm's current concept, which it's planning and brainstorming for potential installation in a new urban center in Shanghai, includes a trio of large towers that will house the vehicles as they're getting charged up. Using modern fast-charging techniques, the cars could conceivably be recharged and back on the road less than a half hour after entering the tower, which would give the passengers enough time to wander around and get only slightly bored before hitting the pavement once again. The conceptual renders are pretty eye-catching, with the semi-transparent towers giving off a very futuristic vibe, but the whole package still manages to feel like some sort of weird roadside attraction which is part of its appeal. The towers have the dual purpose of being aesthetically pleasing while also allowing many more cars to use the facility than would be possible with regular parking and standard chargers. Ennead's concept is still early in its inception, but it's definitely one interesting idea of what the future of "gas" stations may look like. |

A coal museum in Kentucky looks to an unlikely power source: solar energy Posted: 09 Apr 2017 03:23 PM PDT The tiny town of Benham, Kentucky, was originally built to serve the coal mining industry. Now it's embracing solar energy. Benham, population 500, will soon get an array of solar panels atop the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum. The decision to go solar is packed with symbolism, but mostly it just made financial sense, the museum's owners said. SEE ALSO: Interior Dept. agency changes website from family visiting park to a giant pile of coal The solar panels could cut the museum's energy costs by between $8,000 and $10,000 a year, Brandon Robinson, a spokesman for Southeast Community and Technical College, which owns the museum, told reporters last week. The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is converting to solar power. Great decision! https://t.co/XrEQCdClsa — Al Gore (@algore) April 6, 2017 In the U.S. and globally, solar and wind power prices are plummeting as technologies improve and projects reach economies of scale. In 2016, investors built a record amount of renewable energy for less money than in previous years. Energy analysts say those trends will only accelerate in coming years—even as President Donald Trump begins unraveling U.S. policies to address climate change and boost clean energy. Trump has also vowed to revitalize the long-suffering American coal industry, though even mining executives say that's not likely to happen, given the stiff competition from natural gas and renewable energy. A bulldozer operates atop a coal mound in Shelbiana, Kentucky.Image: Luke Sharrett/Getty Images"Despite the changes in tone from the new administration, we think solar and wind will expand in the U.S.," said Angus McCrone, chief editor of Bloomberg New Energy Finance. "All signs are that's going to continue," he said by phone from London. Built in 1994, the Kentucky museum is filled with relics from state's coal mining past, including early mining tools, photographs, and a two-ton block of coal. Country music legend Loretta Lynn, who sang "Coal Miner's Daughter," has housed part of her personal collection on the museum's third floor. The solar rooftop doesn't mean this Appalachian town is bucking the black rock that's long been central to its history and economic fate. At its peak, Benham had about 3,000 residents, until coal industry jobs began to dwindle. However, the solar switch does show how renewable energy is gaining acceptance in Appalachia and far beyond as it becomes more affordable for homeowners and businesses. "The people here are sort of in awe of this solar thing," Wanda Humphrey, Benham's 85-year-old mayor, told the Associated Press. The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity. |

Israel has treated more than 3,000 war wounded from Syria in what it describes as a humanitarian gesture. |

Ford hybrid police car: Catches bad guys, saves gas too Posted: 10 Apr 2017 05:38 AM PDT Ford Motor Co., which sells more police cars in the U.S. than any other automaker, says it will offer a police pursuit version of the hybrid Fusion midsize sedan, in response to requests from cities nationwide. Police cars spend much of their days idling by the side of a road, and that's where the hybrid has a true advantage, Ford said. Ford said at $2.50 per gallon for gas, the hybrid would save a police department $3,877 per year in fuel costs per vehicle. |

Galaxy S8 vs. iPhone 7 Plus speed test: It’s not even close Posted: 10 Apr 2017 06:16 AM PDT Last week we showed you one of the first real world speed test videos to pit the new Galaxy S8 against the reigning speed champion, Apple's iPhone 7 Plus. Unfortunately, we also explained why it was one of the worst speed test videos we had ever seen. None of these YouTube speed test videos are scientific, of course, but some tests are far more controlled than others. In this particular test, the narrator just tapped a bunch of apps and tried to eyeball which one opened faster each time. We were still waiting for some of the more experienced YouTube gadget vloggers to share their speed test results, and now we have a much better test to share. And to be quite frank, the results are shocking. Each year when new flagship Android phones are released, tech fans scratch their heads as they fail to best Apple's iPhones. On paper, iPhones have much less impressive specs, and yet Apple always manages to deliver the smoothest possible user experience time and time again. This year, Samsung's new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ completely crush Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in terms of multi-core benchmark tests, though they still lagged behind Apple in single-core tests. In theory, that should mean Samsung's new phones might be slower than iPhones at simple tasks, but the new Galaxy S8 phones should be clear leaders when it comes to heavy lifting like launching games and rendering 4K video. According to the results of a new real world speed test from YouTuber EverythingApplePro, that's not the case at all. The speed test video below shows the Galaxy S8 pitted against the iPhone 7 Plus in a number of different ways. While the competition is close at times, it's not close at all in the long run. The most interesting parts of the video show that Apple's iPhone 7 Plus is much faster than the Galaxy S8 when it comes to things like rendering 4K video and launching graphics-heavy games. Anyone who had seen earlier multi-core benchmark tests would certainly have expected the opposite to be the case. Check out the full video, which is embedded below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn-2B82B1mg |

Tesla wants everyone to know: The Model 3 won’t be more advanced than the Model S Posted: 08 Apr 2017 01:30 PM PDT With Tesla poised to begin Model 3 production in just about three months, the company in recent weeks has taken steps to temper unreasonably high expectations surrounding its $35,000 EV designed for the masses. Arguably fueled by Elon Musk's coy remarks about mysterious "reveals" in the future, the speculation surrounding Tesla's Model 3 in recent months was on the verge of spiraling out of control. In a general sense, many people began to assume that the Model 3 would introduce features and technology far more advanced than what is currently available on the company's flagship Model S.
Bringing those expectations back down to earth, Elon Musk about two weeks ago indicated the opposite is true, noting via Twitter that the Model 3 is simply a smaller and more affordable version of the Model S with "less range & power & fewer features." For example, the Model 3 dashboard will not incorporate a HUD and will be as sparse as the dashboard we saw when Tesla first introduced the car last year. Additionally, the Model 3 will not feature the "auto extend handles" available on the Model S and the Model X. As far as dimensions are concerned, the Model 3 will be about 20% smaller than the Model S. In effect, Tesla wants current reservation holders and prospective buyers to be fully aware of the fact that the Model 3 will be a lesser version of the Model S in every regard, save of course for cost. Seeking to drive this point home in a manner far more official than Twitter, Tesla this week went so far as to publish a blogpost clarifying that while the Model 3 may be newer than the Model S, it will not be the company's flagship car. The post reads in part:
Indeed, the two areas where the Model 3 will be able to stand toe to toe with the Model S include overall safety features and the option for autonomous driving software. Tesla's framing of the Model 3 in this regard is a smart move. The last thing the company wants is for reservation holders to fork over $35,000+ for a car with wildly outlandish expectations regarding what the car will be able to do. As some folks have opined on Twitter, the Model 3 vs Model S comparison is akin to the difference between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 7. |
