‘Our Dishonest President’: L.A. Times editorial eviscerates Trump Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:59 PM PDT Since Donald Trump began his stunning ascent from real estate mogul and reality television star to wall-building, Muslim-ban-promising Republican candidate to GOP nominee to president, there have been plenty of piercing editorials about him and his policies. But perhaps none have been as scathing as the one published Sunday by the Los Angeles Times. |

Thousands march in Paris after Chinese man's death by police Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:46 PM PDT About 6,000 people took part in angry protests in Paris on Sunday against the death of a Chinese man shot and killed when police responded to a call at his apartment last month, police said. The rally was organised by several Chinese associations in France, and as with previous rallies held over the past week, there were sporadic skirmishes between protesters and security forces. Some of the demonstrators threw bottles, eggs and fruit, prompting the police to respond with tear gas during clashes that lasted more than an hour, according to an AFP photographer. |

Trump insists GOP talks on replacing Obamacare are ongoing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 08:12 AM PDT A little more than a week after telling reporters he was moving on after failing to rally enough Republican support to repeal and replace Obamacare — and vowing to let former President Barack Obama's health care law "explode" — President Trump lashed out at the "fake news media" for casting the negotiations as dead. "Anybody (especially Fake News media) who thinks that Repeal & Replace of ObamaCare is dead does not know the love and strength in R Party!" Trump tweeted on Sunday. |
Chicago police arrest boy, 14, seek others in Facebook rape case Posted: 02 Apr 2017 02:34 PM PDT Police in Chicago have arrested a 14-year-old boy and are seeking a 15-year-old in connection with the gang rape of a teenage girl that was broadcast on Facebook Live, authorities said Sunday. Police were working to identify other suspects -- the Facebook video, since taken down, showed as many as six -- but the trauma suffered by the 15-year-old victim was complicating the investigation, area commander Brendan Deenihan told a news conference. "She's just having a difficult time even communicating what occurred to her," Deenihan said, adding that the teen had been cyber-bullied by people belittling her ordeal, and that her family had received threats. |

Dubai's sky turns black after another skyscraper bursts into flames Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:34 PM PDT Black smoke smothered Dubai's sky on Sunday after a fire broke out near the world's tallest building. The desert metropolis looked almost apocalyptic as dark clouds rose from a high-rise tower complex being built alongside Dubai's biggest mall. SEE ALSO: How a drone helped firefighters battle a blaze in New York City No one was injured in the inferno, though three workers were rescued from inside the structure and taken to the hospital for examination, authorities said. Dramatic skyscraper blazes are a growing problem in Dubai and other rapidly developing parts of the United Arab Emirates. Most of Dubai's fires have been fueled by paneling on the sides of many buildings. The paneling, known as cladding, can be made with fire-resistant material. However, some Dubai buildings instead use quick-burning tiles, without any breaks to stop or slow a fire. Sunday's fire happened only a block away from The Address Downtown Dubai, a 63-story tower that caught fire on New Year's Eve on 2015. The world's tallest tower, a 2,717-foot-high structure called Burj Khalifa, is part of the Downtown Dubai development. عملية اطفاء حريق برج فونتن فيوز . . #سلامتكم_سعادتنا #دبي #الامارات #الامارات_العربية_المتحدة #997 #dubai #uae #dcd #dcd997 #dubai_civil_defenceالدفاع_المدني_دبي A post shared by الدفاع المدني دبي (@dcd997) on Apr 1, 2017 at 11:43pm PDT Officials with the Dubai Civil Defense described this week's fire as an "accident" that began in a parking level of The Address Residences Fountain Views complex. The 60-story structure will eventually connect to the massive Dubai Mall across the street. UAE authorities say they have changed fire safety rules in the territory to address the rising danger from burning buildings, but haven't offered many details. Jetpacks, however, seem to be part of the plan. Video credit: Twitter/Anthea Ayache via Storyful. Associated Press contributed reporting. China to create new economic zone outside Beijing Posted: 02 Apr 2017 04:07 AM PDT China will create a new special economic zone outside Beijing similar to those established in Shenzhen and Shanghai, the government said, in a bid to boost flagging growth and reduce the strain on the capital. The Xiongan New Area, located some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of downtown Beijing in Hebei province, will rival south China's Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, established in the 1980s, and Shanghai's Pudong New Area, set up in the 1990s. The move was a "major historic and strategic choice made by the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core" and would be "crucial for millennium to come", the official Xinhua news agency reported late Saturday. |
Filipino youth stage musical against Duterte's deadly drugs war Posted: 02 Apr 2017 01:57 AM PDT By Ronn Bautista and Neil Jerome Morales MANILA (Reuters) - A Philippine youth theater club staged a musical at a Manila park on Sunday, challenging President Rodrigo Duterte's bloody war on drugs. "The play talks about the problem in the community with the war on drugs and the irony of it, that a few earn money amid this war and all the killings," artistic director Jessie Villabrille told Reuters. More than 8,000 suspected drug addicts and dealers have been killed since Duterte took office on June 30, some in police operations but many others in mysterious circumstances. |

Colombia landslide kills 154 on city outskirts, scores injured Posted: 01 Apr 2017 12:26 PM PDT By Julia Symmes Cobb and Nelson Bocanegra BOGOTA (Reuters) - A landslide in Colombia's southwestern border province of Putumayo sent mud and debris crashing onto houses overnight, killing at least 154 people and injuring scores, officials said on Saturday. Heavy rains caused several rivers to overflow, pushing sediment and rocks onto buildings and roads in the provincial capital of Mocoa and immobilizing cars in several feet of mud. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos flew to Mocoa, population 345,000, to oversee rescue efforts on the city outskirts and speak with affected families. |

Mexican paper where slain reporter worked closes over lack of security Posted: 02 Apr 2017 11:28 PM PDT The Mexican newspaper where a reporter who investigated drug gangs worked until she was murdered has announced it is closing its print edition due to a lack of security. Breach, 54, who wrote for the newspapers Norte and La Jornada, was found dead in her vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the head on March 23 in the city of Chihuahua, capital of the state of the same name. Ciudad Juarez, located in Chihuahua state on the US border with Texas, was for years one of the bloodiest battlegrounds in Mexico as drug cartels fought over lucrative smuggling routes into the United States. |

Ecuador rivals both claim victory in tight runoff Posted: 02 Apr 2017 04:26 PM PDT Both candidates in Ecuador's presidential runoff claimed victory on the basis of conflicting exit polls Sunday, setting up a tense wait as the country charts its future after a decade under leftist Rafael Correa. The election is being closely watched as a barometer of the political climate in Latin America, where more than a decade of leftist dominance has been waning. It may also decide the fate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in Ecuador's London embassy since 2012. |
Prince Charles visits earthquake-hit Italian town Posted: 02 Apr 2017 06:33 AM PDT Britain's Prince Charles paid a visit on Sunday to one of the towns in central Italy devastated by a major earthquake last August, a day after locals protested against the government because of aid delays. The 6.2 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. More than 45,000 aftershocks have rattled the region, including an even stronger 6.6 magnitude quake in October, the biggest to strike Italy for 36 years. |

Protester dies, minister sacked after Paraguay re-election vote Posted: 01 Apr 2017 05:21 PM PDT By Daniela Desantis ASUNCION (Reuters) - Two top Paraguayan government officials were fired on Saturday after a protester died in violent clashes sparked by a secret Senate vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow President Horacio Cartes to run for re-election. While the capital city Asuncion had calmed down the day after Paraguay's Congress was stormed and set on fire, protests may resume if the lower house votes on the amendment next week. The violent upheaval punctured a period of relative stability under Cartes, in which the soy and beef exporting nation became one of South America's fastest-growing economies and began to move past a long history of political uncertainty. |

According to the IPSOS research institute Vucic won about 55 percent of the vote, far above the 50 percent threshold required to win in the first round. Former ombudsman Sasa Jankovic was projected to come in second with about 16 percent. |
Colombian police seize more than six tonnes of cocaine Posted: 02 Apr 2017 10:27 AM PDT BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian police have seized more than six tonnes of cocaine in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla, the defense minister said on Sunday. The shipment, the third-largest seizure in the history of continental Colombia, was found on Friday and belonged to several drug gangs, among them the so-called Urabenos, Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas told journalists. The shipment would have been worth about 200 million euros in Spain, its final destination. Authorities have already confiscated 103 tonnes of cocaine this year, the minister added. Kiev slams Eurovision call to allow Russian singer Posted: 01 Apr 2017 11:16 AM PDT Ukraine on Saturday hit back at "unprecedented and unacceptable" calls from the Eurovision Song Contest's organisers for it to lift an entry ban on Russia's contestant. In an angry row ahead of the kitsch song contest in May to be hosted in Kiev, Ukraine has barred Russia's 27-year-old singer Yuliya Samoilova over illegally entering Moscow-annexed Crimea for a 2015 performance. Eurovision organisers, the Geneva-based European Broadcasting Union (EBU), have sought to find a compromise but have so far been rebuffed by both sides. |
Venezuela seeks to cool outrage over court power grab Posted: 01 Apr 2017 01:38 PM PDT By Andrew Cawthorne and Girish Gupta CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's pro-government Supreme Court revoked its takeover of the opposition-led Congress on Saturday after it drew international condemnation and protests against socialist President Nicolas Maduro. "This controversy is over," Maduro said just after midnight at a specially convened state security committee. The committee ordered the top court to reconsider Wednesday's court ruling, which effectively nullified the legislature and brought accusations the ruling Socialist Party was creating a dictatorship. |

Tina Fey has a message for all the college-educated white women that voted Posted: 02 Apr 2017 11:20 AM PDT Tina Fey isn't one to mince words—and she had some very important things to say on Friday night. The comedian took part in the American Civil Liberties (ACLU) Facebook Live telethon, fundraising alongside Amy Poehler, Tom Hanks, and more for the organization. During the nearly four-hour-long broadcast, Fey took the opportunity to speak to Donald Trump supporters—and specifically, to the college-educated white women voters among them. SEE ALSO: Like Tina Fey? And the ACLU? Do we have the livestream for you. "A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV," the actress said during an interview with Donna Lieberman and Louise Melling of the ACLU. "I would want to urge them to, like — you can't look away because it doesn't affect you this minute, but it's going to affect you eventually." Fey is referring to exit poll numbers from November's election that show Donald Trump's voters were predominantly white female voters in the country— 53 percent to be exact. "I personally would like to make my own pledge to college-educated white women to not look away, not pretend that things that are happening now won't eventually affect me if we don't put a stop to it," she explained. Hamas warns 'collaborators' after Gaza killing Posted: 01 Apr 2017 01:02 PM PDT The Islamist Hamas group in Gaza said Saturday "radical measures" would be taken against Palestinians who "collaborated" with Israel, a week after one of its military commanders was murdered. Interior ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bozum said measures to be taken soon could mean arrests, trials and even executions. During the summer 2014 conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the group's armed wing publicly executed six men accused of collaboration. |
