| Astronomers just discovered something awesome about the most Earth-like planet ever found Posted: 06 Apr 2017 03:19 PM PDT 
Do you like Earth? Yeah, it's pretty neat, huh? Well despite living on a planet as awesome as our own, astronomers are super eager to find more Earths, just for fun. A planet called Gliese 1132 B (GJ 1132b if you feel like making it slightly shorter) is one such planet. It's called a "Super Earth" because it's larger than our own planet, but is thought to be made of similar stuff, and researchers just discovered something extremely awesome that makes GJ 1132b the most Earth-like exoplanet humans have ever found: it has an atmosphere.
Finding planets in the depths of space that bear similarities to Earth is a long and complicated process. First we have to find the planet itself, then we have to determine its size, take an educated guess as to what it's made out of, and figure out how far away it sits from its star. If all of those tests, readings, and measurements come back in the right neighborhood, scientists have to determine if the world has an atmosphere, because without that there's essentially zero chance that life is or could be supported on its surface. GJ 1132b has managed to make it past all of those hurdles, but even that strict criteria doesn't confirm the planet's ability to host living things. The planet is thought to be quite hot, with temperatures at or above those of Venus, which is hundreds of degrees hotter than Earth. If life does exist on the planet, it could be dramatically different from anything humans have ever imagined, but we won't know for certain for a long while. In the meantime, researchers are suggesting that observatories around the world give the planet some special attention going forward.

The deal will see state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries provide India with an advanced defence system of medium-range surface-to-air missiles, launchers and communications technology, the company said in a statement Thursday. The "mega" missile agreement is "considered to be the largest defense contract in Israel's defense industries' history", the company said.

| U.S. cautions Americans ahead of Kenya elections set for August Posted: 06 Apr 2017 08:32 AM PDT  The U.S. State Department on Thursday cautioned Americans living in or traveling to Kenya about possible rallies or protests that could turn violent, ahead of general elections slated for Aug. 8. "Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence," the State Department said in a travel alert. "As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors." Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga said in February that mass protests were possible if the August elections were rigged.

Unlimited data, talk and text will be available by mid-year for $65 per line for up to five lines, or $45 per line for customers with Comcast's top X1 packages, which bundle TV, internet and phone services, the company said. U.S. wireless carriers Verizon Communications Inc , AT&T Inc , T-Mobile US Inc and Sprint Corp have recently offered unlimited monthly plans ranging from $50 to $90 for a single line.

| Girl Develops 'Flesh Eating' Infection After Strep Throat Posted: 06 Apr 2017 07:36 AM PDT  A 6-year-old girl in Ohio recently needed to have her leg amputated after she developed a rare complication from an infection with strep throat bacteria. The girl, Tessa Puma, was treated for strep throat in early March, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. At that time, she didn't have symptoms of the illness, but the doctors treated her because she had tested positive for group A Streptococcus, the bacterium that causes strep, after her father had strep throat, the newspaper said.
