Posted: 13 Apr 2017 08:45 AM PDT An attorney for the man forcibly dragged from a United flight earlier this week said passenger Dr. David Dao suffered serious injuries and that both the airline and city of Chicago are responsible. Dao's attorney, Thomas Demetrio, said at a press conference Thursday morning that Dao suffered a significant concussion and a broken nose, lost two front teeth and would need reconstructive surgery after three aviation officers dragged him off a Louisville-bound flight at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. |
Mexico to extradite accused gunman to U.S. for 'Fast and Furious' slaying Posted: 13 Apr 2017 02:20 PM PDT Mexico's government said on Thursday it planned to extradite the man accused of pulling the trigger in the 2010 killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in a case tied to the U.S. government's ill-fated "Fast and Furious" gun-running sting. Heraclio Osorio-Arellanes was arrested on Wednesday on the border of the northern Mexican states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua for the shooting of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, according to the U.S. Marshal for Arizona. Identifying the suspect only as Heraclio "N", the Mexican attorney general's office said in a statement that following his capture by Mexican marines, steps were underway to initiate the process of his extradition to the United States. |
Pope washes feet of mafia snitches in Easter ritual Posted: 13 Apr 2017 01:09 PM PDT Pope Francis washed the feet of former mafiosi on Thursday in a prison known for housing inmates who have informed on old mobster allies. The closed-door visit to Paliano prison outside Rome saw the 80-year-old pontiff kneel before a small group of inmates, pouring water over their feet, drying them with a towel and bending to kiss them in an age-old Easter tradition. "We are all sinners, we all have our limits and our shortcomings," Francis told the prisoners. |
U.S.-backed forces launch new attacks on Islamic State in Syria: statement Posted: 13 Apr 2017 03:25 AM PDT U.S.-backed forces fighting Islamic State in Syria launched a new phase of their offensive on Thursday, a statement said, but they have not yet begun to attack the militant group's stronghold of Raqqa city in an apparent delay in the operation. The multi-phased campaign by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance made up of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighting groups, was launched in November and aims ultimately to drive the jihadists from Raqqa, their de facto Syrian capital. Officials in the Kurdish YPG militia, a powerful component of the SDF, said last month that assaults on Raqqa city itself would start in early or mid-April. |

Nigeria seizes $43 million cash stash in Lagos house Posted: 13 Apr 2017 08:09 AM PDT Nigeria's anti-graft agency seized over $43 million in cash during a raid on a Lagos apartment in what it hailed as a victory for President Muhammadu Buhari's war on corruption following a string of setbacks. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said in a statement issued late Wednesday it discovered the "humongous" amount of money in an apartment in Ikoyi, an upscale district of Lagos. "She comes looking haggard, with dirty clothes, but her skin didn't quite match her appearance, perhaps a disguise," said the anonymous source quoted in the EFCC statement. |

The secret software Uber once used to keep Lyft drivers off the road Posted: 13 Apr 2017 06:16 AM PDT The more one reads about Uber's leadership and the manner in which it goes about conducting business and treating its employees, the harder it becomes to give the company the benefit of the doubt when a new bombshell report emerges. Indeed, it seems that we can't even go a few days without seeing Uber appear in the news for all the wrong reasons. The latest black mark on Uber's reputation comes from Amir Efrati of The Information who writes that the ridesharing company, from 2014 through 2016, utilized a top-secret piece of software called "Hell" which was designed to keep the number of Lyft drivers on the road as low as possible.
Citing an employee who claims to have worked on the software, "Hell" was able to track the location of Lyft drivers looking for passengers. Further, the software was also able to identify which drivers also happened to work for Uber as well. With that information in tow, requests for rides were more likely than not routed to Uber drivers who also operated as Lyft drivers, even if other Uber drivers were closer to a passenger's designated pickup location. The rationale behind the software was simple: if individuals working for both Uber and Lyft were constantly kept busy picking up riders via the Uber app, it would necessarily diminish the number of available Lyft cars on the road.
While this allegation may seem outlandish at first glance, remember that Uber is the same company that had employees make and then cancel 5,560 Lyft rides in order to decrease driver availability, and in turn, make Lyft seem like a less appealing venture relative to Uber. |

United passenger suffered concussion, broken nose Posted: 13 Apr 2017 09:25 AM PDT At a press conference on Thursday, the attorney and daughter of Dr. David Dao spoke out about Dao's experience being dragged off a United Airlines flight the previous Sunday. Dao's attorney, Thomas Demetrio, said Dao suffered a significant concussion and a broken nose, lost two front teeth and would need reconstructive surgery. He also said Dao described the experience as worse than fleeing his home country of Vietnam. Dao's daughter, Crystal Pepper, thanked the public for its support of her father. |

Killer whales toss boats like toys while hunting a sea lion Posted: 13 Apr 2017 12:01 PM PDT A couple of boaters found themselves directly in the middle of a pod of orca whales hunting a sea lion off of the coast of Bowyer Island in British Columbia, Canada. According to Viral Hog, the man filming the incident spotted a few whale watching boats and went to go check out the action. After observing the orcas from a distance for 30 minutes, things took a turn when a sea lion sought refuge under one of the boats. The orcas bashed the boats like toys in a bathtub while trying to hunt the sea lion. The boaters were fearful that they would harm the animals with the propellers on their boats if they tried to get away, so the boats stayed put until a guide on the whale watching boat suggested that they move closer to the island so the sea lion could get to safety. Thankfully for the sea lion, the tactic worked. "The sea lion was safe in the end, though clearly a little injured," the boater told Viral Hog. |
Apple has a secret team of researchers trying to solve one of medicine’s biggest challenges Posted: 13 Apr 2017 09:41 AM PDT A fascinating new report from CNBC claims that Apple has a secret team of scientists, researchers, and biomedical engineers trying to develop a way to noninvasive measure a user's glucose levels. As it stands now, the only way for a diabetic to measure his or her glucose levels is to draw blood from a finger or to use an implanted sensor linked up to an external device. That said, if Apple is able to succeed where dozens of biotech firms have previously failed, it would mark one of the more significant medical breakthroughs of our time.
According to the report, Apple's research initiative in this area has been ongoing for five years. Indeed, when Apple began assembling a team to develop the first incarnation of the Apple Watch, it hired a number of individuals with broad and deep experience in the realm of non-invasive blood glucose research.
While there's no doubt Apple is working on and researching such advanced technologies, the prospects of Apple actually succeeding is, by all accounts, extremely low. Over the past many years, innumerable biotech companies have tried to develop sensors and technologies capable of noninvasively monitoring blood glucose levels, and while some companies have seen some extremely mild success, there is no body of evidence to suggest that a marketable solution is right around the corner or even inevitable. I'd love to be proven wrong, but it's hard to ignore the words of John L. Smith -- one of the world's preeminent experts on non-invasive glucose measuring technologies -- who wrote the following back in 2013:
While it's possible for Apple to succeed where others have fallen short, I believe that it's far-fetched to expect Apple to come up with a medical breakthrough in the near future, let alone a miniaturized solution that could fit on a wearable device as compact as the Apple Watch. |
Wall Street's 'Charging Bull' artist challenges 'Fearless Girl' sculpture Posted: 12 Apr 2017 12:13 PM PDT The sculptor of Wall Street's "Charging Bull" statue is seeing red over New York City's decision to keep in place the "Fearless Girl" sculpture that now stares it down, saying the adjacent art has changed the meaning of his work and violated his legal rights. The city's ruling to let the bronze depiction of a defiant girl remain until February 2018 just feet from the bull's flaring nostrils should be reviewed, said a lawyer for sculptor Arturo Di Modica. "How did the process happen and should permits be revoked?" the attorney, Norman Siegel, said in an interview on Wednesday, adding that his client ought to have been consulted. |

US boy, 8, on joy ride for a cheeseburger Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:03 PM PDT Talk about a craving: an eight-year-old American boy drove his father's van to a McDonald's because he just had to have a cheeseburger. The Ohio boy said he learned to drive by watching YouTube videos, the Weirton Daily Times reported on Sunday evening's adventure. The child, at the wheel with his four-year-old sister riding shotgun, drove for about a mile and a half, stopping at red lights and letting traffic pass before he executed a left turn into the McDonald's in the town of East Palestine in eastern Ohio, the paper said. |
Will Honda bring clarity or confusion to the electric vehicle market with its latest cars? Posted: 13 Apr 2017 06:38 AM PDT Japanese carmaker Honda has set itself a huge target of selling 75,000 electrified cars in the US within the next four years and it believes that the key to meeting that goal is to offer buyers a range of three very different types of plug-in car, all called Clarity. Clarity is the name Honda bestowed on its Hydrogen Fuel Cell car, which has been available for lease in the US since 2016. At this week's New York Auto Show it has turned the name into a three-car range by lunching the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and the Clarity Electric, both of which look similar to the fuel cell original but are very different beneath the skin. |

Walmart has a new program that’s the opposite of Amazon Prime Posted: 12 Apr 2017 01:35 PM PDT Amazon's yearly Prime subscription is supposed to be the ultimate in lazy shopping: pay an annual fee, and in return order as much stuff as you want for home delivery, thanks to the free two-day shipping. In Amazon's model, you trade a modest fixed fee for ultimate convenience and the wonders of never having to put on clothes and leave your home. But Walmart is trying something different.
Pickup Discount is a new Walmart program that offers customers a discount on items bought online, but only if they pick them up at a store. The discounts vary, but it seems like some items that would be expensive for Walmart to ship (a TV, for example) get discounted by up to $50. That's a good discount, which Walmart can fund as it's saving big-time on the cost of shipping. It also gets you into Walmart, which means there's also a chance you'll impulse-buy a $3 pair of sunglasses, bumping up the margins even more. Not everything gets a Pickup Discount. Initially, Walmart is planning on rolling the program out to 10,000 products across 4,000 stores. However, the ambitions go up from there, as Walmart wants to offer a discount on a million items by June. Walmart is also taking this as a chance to make its in-store pickup system slicker and faster for customers to use. Expect to see curbside pickup and automated collection machines roll out, so that even if you have to go to a store to get your packages, you still won't actually have to talk to anyone while doing it. |
Philippines' Duterte cancels visit to disputed South China Sea island Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:01 PM PDT Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte has canceled a planned visit to an island the Philippines claims in the disputed South China Sea, after Beijing warned him against the visit. The brash Philippine leader last week announced his plan to raise the Philippine flag in the island of Thitu and fortify it with barracks, setting off alarm bells. "Because of our friendship with China and because we value your friendship I will not go there to raise the Philippine flag," Duterte said in a speech before the Filipino community in Riyadh late Wednesday. |

Former Trump aide denies wrongdoing amid reports of Russia probe Posted: 12 Apr 2017 04:18 PM PDT A former Donald Trump advisor at the eye of a firestorm over alleged ties to Russia by the billionaire businessman's presidential campaign on Wednesday denied any wrongdoing. Former aide Carter Page, an oil industry consultant, spoke out amid reports that the FBI investigated him last year for ties to Russian intelligence. The Washington Post reported that federal investigators obtained a rare warrant from the top secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to monitor Page's communications -- the first concrete confirmation of government surveillance of Trump's team. |

U.S. government sued over plan to kill cougars and bears in Colorado Posted: 12 Apr 2017 04:10 PM PDT Wildlife conservation groups sued the U.S. government on Wednesday seeking to halt a plan to trap and kill as many as 120 mountain lions and black bears in Colorado in a bid to stem declines in populations of mule deer favored by hunters. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Denver, accuses the Wildlife Services agency, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, of violating federal law by failing to fully assess potential impacts of the predator-control plan on other native wildlife. |

Japan scrambles jet fighters at record pace as Chinese military activity rises Posted: 13 Apr 2017 12:49 AM PDT Japan's air force scrambled fighter jets to chase away foreign aircraft at record pace in the year to March 31, government figures showed on Thursday, as Chinese military activity in and around the East China Sea escalated. Japan worries that China's probing of its air defenses is part of a push to extend its military influence in the East China Sea and western Pacific, where Japan controls an island chain stretching 1,400 km (870 miles) south towards Taiwan. "Recently we have seen Chinese military aircraft operating further south and that is bringing them closer to the main Okinawa island and other parts of the island chain," Japan's top military commander, Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, told a briefing in Tokyo. |
