As Gorsuch is testifying, Supreme Court undermines his decision in school disabilities case Posted: 22 Mar 2017 12:13 PM PDT Senate Democrats seized on a Supreme Court ruling handed down Wednesday morning — less than an hour into the third day of the confirmation hearing for nominee Neil Gorsuch — to question the judgment of President Trump's choice to fill the empty seat on the high court. The unanimous decision in Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District expanded the obligations of public-school districts to provide an adequate education to disabled students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts rejected a standard that Gorsuch had used to decide a similar case in 2008, Thompson School District v. Luke P. |

US suspects N Korea in $81 mn Bangladesh theft: report Posted: 22 Mar 2017 06:50 PM PDT US federal prosecutors suspect the North Korean government directed last year's theft of $81 million from Bangladesh's account at the New York Federal Reserve Bank, according to a media report Wednesday. Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal said prosecutors were developing cases showing Chinese middlemen helped the North Korean government orchestrate the enormous theft from the Bangladesh central bank. In February 2016, thieves transferred the funds from Bangladesh's account at the New York Fed to accounts in the Philippines using authenticated international bank access codes in the SWIFT system, not by hacking the bank. |
UK parliament attacker named as British-born Khalid Masood Posted: 23 Mar 2017 09:42 AM PDT By Michael Holden and Estelle Shirbon LONDON (Reuters) - The attacker who killed three people near parliament in London before being shot dead was named on Thursday as British-born Khalid Masood, who was once investigated by MI5 intelligence officers over concerns about violent extremism. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement issued by its Amaq news agency, but did not name Masood and gave no details. It was not clear whether the attacker was directly connected to the jihadist group. |

Over-excited little girl steals the Pope's hat off his head Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:15 AM PDT Little kids have 10 times the energy most adults have. Put them in contact with a famous person, and anything can happen. MountainButorac, a Catholic blogger, recently took his goddaughter to see Pope Francis II in Rome. And the lucky little one didn't just get to see him, she got close enough to receive a kiss from the head of the Catholic Church. But she wanted so much more than that. Overwhelmed by energy, she reached out, desperate to discharge it somewhere, and pulled the Pope's hat off his head. SEE ALSO: Little kid aims his pro stink eye at a chip thief The Pope's hat is technically called a zucchetto. And he actually seemed to enjoy the moment, or at least have enough social skills to feign enthusiasm. Watch the full interaction and rejoice! The internet has risen! We're sure Pope Francis forgave her for the transgression. WATCH: Robotic glove lets people with limited hand mobility perform daily tasks |

The final tally from Wednesday's vote gave Rutte's People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) a total of 33 seats in parliament, followed by 20 for anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) in a distant second place. The progressive D66 and Christian Democrats (CDA) both garnered 19 seats, followed by the rising GroenLinks (GreenLeft) and Socialist Parties, both with 14. |
First U.S. bumble bee added to endangered species list Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:05 PM PDT The rusty patched bumble bee became the first wild bee in the continental United States to gain federal protection on Tuesday when it was added to the government's list of endangered and threatened species. The bee, once widely found in the upper Midwest and Northeastern United States, was listed after U.S. President Donald Trump's administration lifted a hold it had placed on a plan for federal protections proposed last fall by the administration of former President Barack Obama. |

"This is not going to pass," Biden said on the steps of the Capitol, standing in front of a large group of House Democrats. |

The Turkish military said the soldier was killed in the Turkish province of Hatay, across the border from Syria's Afrin, which is controlled by the Kurdish YPG militia. |

Jesus's tomb restored after months of work Posted: 21 Mar 2017 11:44 PM PDT The tomb where Jesus is believed to have been buried is being unveiled again following nine months of restoration work that will be highlighted at a much anticipated ceremony Wednesday. The shrine, which includes a 19th-century ornate edicule or shrine surrounding the tomb, is a key part of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City. Parts of it were also coming loose, with warnings that it was structurally unsound and posed a risk to the millions of pilgrims who visit the site every year. |
Joe Biden met a puppy named Biden and for a moment, the entire world stopped Posted: 22 Mar 2017 11:42 AM PDT Hello, and welcome to your Wednesday afternoon moment of zen. Former vice president and presidential-level heartthrob Joe Biden (don't @ us) met a 4-month-old Golden Retriever named Biden and for a moment, the entire world stopped spinning, and everything was right again. SEE ALSO: There are many great Obama-Biden bromance memes, but only one made the VP laugh for an hour Biden, the world's most adorable dog™️️, made an early trip to the Capitol on Wednesday in hopes of catching a glimpse of the former VP - there to celebrate the seventh anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. "As soon as he saw the dog during the actual speech, he pointed at the dog, tapped his friend and then started like cracking up," Sydney, Biden's owner, told BuzzFeed News. "Right towards the end, I, like, kind of signaled him, and he... gave me a wink to come over." Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock "As soon as I told him his name was Biden, he started kissing the dog, which is like exactly what I expected Biden would do," Sydney said, noting that "As soon as I told him, his face lit up." Exclusive: Tillerson urges Senate ratification of Montenegro's NATO membership Posted: 21 Mar 2017 06:04 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has written to the leaders of the U.S. Senate urging the ratification of Montenegro as the newest member of the NATO alliance, saying it is "strongly in the interests of the United States." In a letter dated March 7 and seen by Reuters on Tuesday, Tillerson argued that Montenegro's membership in the alliance would support greater integration, democratic reform, trade, security and stability among its neighbors. Moscow opposes any further expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the delay in U.S. approval of Montenegro's accession has fueled questions about whether President Donald Trump's administration and his Republican Party will stand up to Russia despite Trump's desire for better relations. |
Two years on, Yemen stuck in 'quagmire' Posted: 22 Mar 2017 09:58 PM PDT Deadly fighting, a rise in jihadism, the threat of famine -- two years after Saudi Arabia intervened against Iran-backed rebels, Yemen is more unstable than ever. The chaos has also seen fighting erupt in vital Red Sea shipping lanes, and Riyadh's ally the United States stepping up its involvement. The war has become "a quagmire", Peter Salisbury, a research fellow at London's Chatham House, said ahead of the March 26 anniversary of the intervention of the Saudi-led coalition. |

South Carolina church shooter's friend to serve time for lying, silence Posted: 21 Mar 2017 12:47 PM PDT The South Carolina man who suspected his friend Dylann Roof was to blame for the June 2015 massacre at a historic black church but did not immediately call police and told others to stay silent was sentenced on Tuesday to more than two years in prison. Joey Meek, 22, told authorities Roof revealed his plot during a cocaine and vodka-fueled night about a week before the shooting, which was one of several racially charged shootings in recent years that reopened debate about race relations and gun control laws in the United States. Roof, who is white, told Meek he wanted to start a race war by killing black people at a church, court records show. |
