Sean Spicer spars with White House press corps over alleged wiretapping Posted: 16 Mar 2017 07:07 PM PDT White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer had a heated exchange with a pair of reporters at his daily briefing on Thursday. The tense back-and-forth began with questions about President Trump's allegation that he was wiretapped by his predecessor, Barack Obama. It devolved into shouting, repeated interruptions and an accusation from Spicer that the media is attempting to "perpetuate a false narrative" about Trump's relationship with Russia. |
Explosive device discovered at Port Authority Bus Terminal, suspect arrested Posted: 16 Mar 2017 01:34 PM PDT A man with an extensive criminal record allegedly planted an explosive device at New York City's bustling Port Authority Bus Terminal during rush hour on Wednesday. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) said several officers responded to a report of a suspicious bag at Deli Plus, an eatery inside the bus station, at 5:18 p.m. The deli caters to commuters in the south wing of the terminal's main concourse, which is located one block from Times Square. Arsenio Mason, 39, a resident of Jersey City, N.J., was arrested at 8 p.m. — roughly three hours after the officers first responded. |

Man gets 40 years after kidnap victim describes 'hell' Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:55 AM PDT SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California woman who was drugged along with her boyfriend and then dragged from their home described the "hell that we have survived" in emotional testimony before her abductor was sentenced to 40 years in prison in a crime so elaborate and bizarre that police initially dismissed it as a hoax. |

Cuts to poverty programs are ‘as compassionate as you can get,’ Trump budget chief says Posted: 16 Mar 2017 02:16 PM PDT Mulvaney took questions at the daily press briefing about the administration's budget proposals, which call for deep cuts to virtually all federal programs except the military, homeland security and the Veterans Administration. "It is difficult to imagine a scenario in which they will not be significantly and negatively impacted if the president's budget were enacted," Meals on Wheels spokeswoman Jenny Bertolette told CNN on Thursday. |

Russian hackers targeted just one Yahoo employee in order to breach 500M accounts Posted: 16 Mar 2017 09:59 AM PDT More details about the activities that led to one of the biggest data breaches in history are coming to light now that the Department of Justice has indicted four suspects for the 2014 Yahoo hack that affected more than 500 million accounts. An early report revealed how Russian spy operatives and hackers were able to access user accounts without actually stealing passwords. The attackers were able to get their hands on two critical Yahoo resources that they used to trick Yahoo servers into thinking that they were the genuine account owners. A second report now reveals that in order to actually breach the accounts they were targeting, the hackers first needed to hack just one single Yahoo employee. FBI special agent Malcom Palmore told ArsTechnica in an interview that the hack likely started with an attack on a "semi-privileged" Yahoo employee rather than a top executive. Social engineering or spear fishing "was the likely avenue of infiltration" for hackers to gain the credentials they needed to infiltrate Yahoo's server. The direct result of this attack was access to Yahoo's internal networks. That's where one of the hackers conducted reconnaissance work and discovered the key assets the attackers needed to be able to break into specific user accounts. The hackers obtained a large database that helped them create forged cookies, which were enough to access a Yahoo Mail account without the owner's knowledge and without any login credentials. Yahoo disclosed the 2014 security breach that affected more than 500 million accounts only a few months ago. Since then, it confirmed that the company suffered two similar data breaches that affected more than one billion users in total. The FBI agent did not say whether the government or Yahoo discovered the 2014 breach, and he did not reveal more details about the initial attack on the unnamed Yahoo employee. Furthermore, Palmore did not say how long the intrusion lasted. FBI special agent John Bennett said during a news conference in San Francisco that Yahoo was a great partner during the investigation, and that the company was under no obligation to tell customers about the breach. Yahoo apparently withheld the disclosure for nearly two years, he said. |

Amid probe, Pakistan bars German CEO of national carrier from leaving country Posted: 16 Mar 2017 11:55 AM PDT By Syed Raza Hassan KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan has barred the German chief executive of Pakistan International Airlines from leaving the country due to an investigation into corruption at the loss-making carrier, the interior minister said on Wednesday. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said Bernd Hildenbrand has been put on the "exit control list" (ECL), which forbids individuals from leaving the country, due to an ongoing probe into the lease of planes from a Sri Lankan carrier. "(Hildenbrand's) name was placed on ECL some two or three days back," Khan told reporters in Karachi, outlining concerns about management of PIA. |

Israel carries out air strikes on Syria: army Posted: 17 Mar 2017 12:23 AM PDT Israeli aircraft carried out several strikes on Syria overnight, prompting the launch of ground-to-air missiles in response, one of which was intercepted, the army said on Friday. It was the most serious incident between the two countries, which remain technically at war, since civil war broke out in Syria in March 2011. "Overnight... aircraft targeted several targets in Syria," an Israeli army statement said. |
Health care fight raises concerns about Paul Ryan’s political skills Posted: 15 Mar 2017 07:15 PM PDT Paul Ryan's leadership has long been questioned by Republicans who think he's politically naïve, and the current health care fight is raising new concerns about Ryan's political savvy, as the Republican speaker of the House faces the toughest test of his career. The Wisconsin Republican has always prioritized ideas and policy details above political strategies, and that's often been part of his appeal. The latest example: As the GOP health care bill came under fire last week, Ryan held an on-camera briefing with reporters and conducted a half-hour seminar on the details of the legislation. |

T-Mobile scrambles as 911 outage leaves two dead in Texas Posted: 16 Mar 2017 04:08 PM PDT We take it for granted that if you pick up a phone and dial 911, someone will pick up at the other end. That hasn't been happening recently in Texas, and T-Mobile is left standing naked in the spotlight after a series of errors left 911 calls on hold, and two people dead.
The Dallas 911 system has been flooded with "ghost calls" from T-Mobile subscribers recently. The 911 switchboard records a call from a number that instantly hangs up. It floods the incoming phone lines, but also means that the 911 operators have to dial the number back, as it could be someone in danger. The end result is that legitimate 911 users have been immediately disconnected when they dial 911, or at best placed on hold for 20 minutes. This has come to a head in two sad incidents. In the first, David Taffet noticed that his husband had stopped breathing and called 911. He was immediately disconnected and it took him 20 minutes to reach a 911 operator. By the time his husband made it to the hospital, he was dead. In the second case, a babysitter was on hold for 30 minutes while trying to get help for an infant. The baby was eventually taken to two area hospitals, but died. Talking to KCENTV, Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax said "This is an unacceptable situation and the citizens of Dallas deserve better. With Mr. Legere's commitment today, I'm hopeful T-Mobile can continue to work with the City of Dallas to finally resolve this situation so that we have a reliable 911 system that can properly serve the emergency needs of our citizens." T-Mobile CEO John Legere has pledged to send "top engineers" to the city to take care of the problem. This isn't the first time T-Mobile has faced 911 issues; in 2015, it was fined $17.5 million by the FCC for nationwide 911 outages. |

Why the Republican health care bill is doomed to fail — even if it passes Posted: 16 Mar 2017 02:00 AM PDT House Speaker Paul Ryan, on March 7, uses charts and graphs to make his case for the GOP's plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. The old Superman comic books used to feature a character named Bizarro, who looked exactly like the Man of Steel, except for his blocky, Frankenstein-like features and the fact that everything about him was reversed. In a sense, what Republican leaders are frantically trying to push through Congress is the Bizarro health care plan — a mirror image of the law it would replace, patched together from spare parts and castoff ideas. |
Opinion polls score much-needed Dutch election win Posted: 16 Mar 2017 08:30 AM PDT By John Geddie and Philip Blenkinsop LONDON/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch election results eased investor concerns on Thursday that opinion polls were systematically underestimating the strength of populist feeling, especially in France, after an outcome broadly in line with surveys of voter intentions. Pollsters had been chastised for not capturing an anti-establishment upsurge before 2016's Brexit vote and Donald Trump's U.S. election, even though both results were within a reasonable margin of error. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's victory, after fending off a challenge from far-right rival Geert Wilders, appears to have silenced some of those critics in what could be an important factor for maintaining financial stability ahead of French, German, and possibly Italian elections, later this year. |

The Galaxy S8 could offer nearly 5x better slo-mo performance than the S7. To put that into perspective, that's almost 5 times better than the 240 fps slo-mo on the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7, and slightly faster than the 960 fps Sony demoed on the Xperia XZ premium it recently unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2017. |

Trump eyes 'flexible' Islamic State war fund, Guantanamo upgrade Posted: 16 Mar 2017 02:57 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Mike Stone WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump is asking Congress to give the Pentagon about $2 billion for a "flexible" fund to use against Islamic State over the next six months, as his administration weighs changes to the U.S.-led campaign against the militant group. Trump is also seeking to upgrade long-underfunded facilities at the U.S. military's Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba that Trump's Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, unsuccessfully sought to close during his eight-year administration. |
Great Barrier Reef may never recover from bleaching: study Posted: 15 Mar 2017 11:18 PM PDT Australia's Great Barrier Reef may never recover from last year's warming-driven coral bleaching, said a study that called for urgent action in the face of ineffective conservation efforts. Record-high temperatures in 2015 and 2016 drove an unprecedented bleaching episode, which occurs when stressed corals expel the algae that live in their tissue and provide them with food. |

Florida governor replaces anti-death penalty prosecutor Posted: 16 Mar 2017 05:02 PM PDT Florida Governor Rick Scott on Thursday replaced a local prosecutor who declared she would not seek the death penalty in a case against a man accused of killing an Orlando police officer and refused to recuse herself. In an executive order, Scott removed State Attorney Aramis Ayala, the elected prosecutor in central Florida's Ninth Judicial Circuit, and reassigned the murder case to State Attorney Brad King of the nearby Fifth Judicial Circuit. Ayala, at a news conference earlier on Thursday, said Florida's death penalty system was the cause of "legal chaos" and said she would not seek the death penalty against Markeith Loyd, charged in the Jan. 9 shooting of the policewoman. |
