Republican slams Democratic women for wearing white to Trump's speechRepresentative Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., strongly criticized the Democratic congresswomen who wore white to President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, dismissing the move as "weird" and characterizing it as an homage to Hillary Clinton's failed presidential bid. "But by the way, did you notice how poorly several of them were dressed, as well?" Cramer said Wednesday, during a radio town hall broadcast from Fargo, N.D., Politico reported. There is a disease associated with the notion that a bunch of women would wear bad-looking white pantsuits in solidarity with Hillary Clinton to celebrate her loss.

Philippines demands proof for rights group's assertion of police 'executions'The Philippines on Thursday dismissed as "thoughtless and irresponsible" a report by Human Rights Watch that President Rodrigo Duterte had turned a blind eye to murders by police in what the group called a "campaign of extrajudicial execution". Duterte's signature war on drugs was in the best interests of Filipinos and the New York-based group's allegations of systematic police abuse were "hearsay" and not supported by evidence, said presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella. "All these accusations of circumventing police procedures should be proven in a competent court and if found meritorious should result in appropriate sanctions against the perpetrators," Abella said in a statement.

Forget Trump’s speech. Look at his budget.

Forget Trump's speech. Look at his budget. It was a kinder, gentler, somewhat maudlin version of his campaign speech that President Trump delivered to Congress Tuesday. Speechifying aside, though, we did learn something significant this week about the president's governing vision, because he also previewed the budget he will send to Congress. A president's budget, as you may know, is really more like a statement of priorities and general direction, which Congress rarely enacts these days in any event.

Amazon finally explained what happened when it accidentally took down the internet

Amazon finally explained what happened when it accidentally took down the internet

The Amazon Simple Storage Service and Amazon Web Services, also known as S3 and AWS, happen to power a lot of the internet as you know it. And they're usually quite dependable, meaning that the companies using the solutions can rest assured that their websites will be up no matter what. But no internet service can have a 100% uptime rating, and the same goes for AWS. It was Amazon's AWS that failed on Tuesday, taking plenty of popular services and sites down with it.

Now, Amazon has finally explained exactly what happened on Tuesday when it took down much of the web.

In lengthy and rather technical note to customers, Amazon explained that an employee entered a command incorrectly and caused a chain of events that ultimately led to parts of the internet going bonkers. Amazon has protocols in place to fix downtime issues like these, but the problem was so ample that not even Amazon could fix it in a timely matter. That's why the outage lasted for several hours — well, technically it wasn't an outage since only subsets of AWS's complex architecture went down.

"We build our systems with the assumption that things will occasionally fail, and we rely on the ability to remove and replace capacity as one of our core operational processes," Amazon said. "While this is an operation that we have relied on to maintain our systems since the launch of S3, we have not completely restarted the index subsystem or the placement subsystem in our larger regions for many years."

The good news is that Amazon was able to restore order in the universe, and it's now looking to prevent this from ever happening again. If you want to read the entire explanation, check out Amazon's full post here.

After drought, Zimbabwe seeks foreign help for flood victims

After drought, Zimbabwe seeks foreign help for flood victimsZimbabwe has appealed for international help for victims of floods that have left 246 people dead and displaced hundreds since December when torrential rains started pounding a country emerging from severe drought. An El Nino-induced drought last year scorched crops in the southern African country, leaving more than 4 million in need of food aid, but Zimbabweans are now having to contend with floods after receiving above-normal rains. Minister for local government Saviour Kasukuwere said floods had swept through villages in the southern and southwestern parts of Zimbabwe, destroying roads, crops and livestock and forcing people into temporary government shelter.

DRC opposition leader's body to return home after weeks of wranglingThe body of Congolese opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi is to be repatriated next week, several weeks after his death, his party said Wednesday, raising hopes of a restart of talks on a deal to end the political crisis. Tshisekedi's death and the delay over repatriating his body from Brussels have blocked the implementation of a December 31 accord between the government and the opposition to end a crisis triggered by President Joseph Kabila's refusal to stand down. The 84-year-old Tshisekedi, head of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), died in Brussels on February 1, eight days after leaving the Democratic Republic of Congo for medical care abroad.

New solar roof technology from Panasonic could eventually end up in Tesla’s Model 3

Posted: 01 Mar 2017 04:01 PM PST

New solar roof technology from Panasonic could eventually end up in Tesla's Model 3

This past November, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter and floated the idea of offering a solar roof option for the Model 3. When asked outright if Tesla had plans to "embed solar panels in the roof," Musk replied that they would "probably offer that as an option."

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/794575003446480896

Right off the bat, Musk's tweet seemed overly optimistic, if not downright absurd. While a solar roof capable of harnessing the sun's power and charging a car as it drives is certainly intriguing, such a design is far from practical given the current state of solar technology. At the core, the size of the Model 3's roof would only be big enough for a solar panel that would, at best, manage to tack on an extra mile or two of range per day. In effect, implementing a solar roof would be far more trouble than it's worth.

Earlier this week, however, Panasonic unveiled a new a type of solar panel technology designed specifically for cars. Dubbed the "HITPhotovoltaic Module for Automobile", the solar roof design is currently available for the Toyota Prius PHV exclusively, but that may change in the coming years.

What makes Panasonic's work here so intriguing is that the design houses new technology which makes it possible to actually charge lithium-ion batteries, the very same which power Tesla's fleet of vehicles.

Panasonic's press release reads:

Panasonic's solar cells have a unique structure that combines a crystalline silicon substrate and an amorphous silicon film, and feature high conversion efficiency and excellent temperature characteristics.

Conventional automotive solar cells can output up to several tens of watts and have been used only for the auxiliary charging of 12 V batteries and ventilation power sources for parked cars; however, the use of the features of Panasonic's solar cells allow a high output (approx.180 W) in a limited area on a car's roof, enabling the charging of the drive lithium-ion batteries as well as 12 V batteries, resulting in a possible extension of an EV's travel distance and increased in fuel economy.

An added bonus is that Panasonic's solar roof can be designed to match a car's existing design, thereby enabling an efficient installation process.

That said, a lot more work still needs to be done before solar roofs become an add-on worth paying for, or even considering. Even with Panasonic's solar roof advancements, a parked car equipped with a solar roof panel might still only be able to eek out an additional 3-4 miles of range per day. While that could certainly add up over time, it's hardly a game-changer. Additionally, consider this: the aforementioned Toyota Prius PHV would reportedly need about a full week to go from empty to full charge via a solar roof alone.

In the meantime, Tesla owners can look forward to next-gen Supercharger technology which Musk last year hinted would be a huge leap forward.

What am I looking at here? You know how animals do strange things before storms or natural disasters? Is this one of those times? Could this be an omen? Is this some kind of satanic ritual? Will this dead cat now be beamed up to some mysterious place we can't see with our human eyes? After some research to try to explain such behavior, it turns out that wild turkeys do not normally eat cats, or even dead cats. They typically eat berries, plants, insects and small vertebrates. So, this probably rules out the chance that they were planning on eating the cat. However, cats are predators to turkeys, often preying on them and their eggs. Was this cat a menace to this group of turkeys and now they are circling it as a part of a celebratory ritual?  OR, could this cat have been these turkeys' leader and now they are mourning its death? There is no evidence of turkeys performing "funerals" or rituals for the dead like other animals do, but this could be the start of something new.  People of Twitter are of course very confused by this and had a lot to say about the phenomenon: @TheReal_JDavis pic.twitter.com/sflN2lRBbq — Nigeria'sFinest™ (@DMV_Drummerboyy) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis pic.twitter.com/7bdCFd8EGG — ‍ (@Zincrozine) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis bro, they was waiting for u to give the eulogy — ab_jilla (@kickzjilla) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis Friend : Dude look outsideMe : pic.twitter.com/IyIzaRIj4f — Skully (@oSkullyy) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis Man I don't know what's going on there but you need to get the hell out of that town! — Grateful Deadstock (@Gr8fulDeadstock) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis yo im finna have to look up some facts for this — #¥®  (@1YoungRasta) March 2, 2017 @TheReal_JDavis bruh — str8ballin (@YaFavPlug) March 2, 2017 I don't know, should this guy move to a new house? Audi, Porsche top Consumer Reports scorecard; Fiat, Jeep, not so much

Posted: 01 Mar 2017 12:24 PM PST

Audi, Porsche top Consumer Reports scorecard; Fiat, Jeep, not so muchConsumer Reports has issued its annual Brand Report Card, and as interesting as it is, there aren't many surprises to be found.  To issue its 2017 rankings, the magazine compiled data on 31 brands. That data came from a variety of sources, including Consumer Reports' own road test scores, predicted reliability scores, safety ratings, and owner satisfaction scores. Data was compiled for each model tested, then averaged to create a brand-wide score. As Consumer Reports' Jake Fisher explains, "Our annual analysis reveals that building one or two great vehicles is achievable, but making a whole lineup of excellent ones is much more difficult." To be included in the 2017 Report Card, Consumer Reports had to have tested at least two models from a given brand. That left Alfa Romeo, Genesis, Maserati, Ram, and Smart  out of the running this year.   The findings It won't surprise many people to learn that luxury models dominated the top of Consumer Reports' report card. Audi finished at the head of the class, with an overall score of 81. Its sibling brand, Porsche, nabbed second place, with a score of 78. BMW and Lexus were right behind, with 77 points each (though BMW fared far better on Consumer Reports' road test). And Subaru came in fifth, with a score of 74. The remaining top-ten brands were Kia (74), Mazda (73), Tesla (73), Honda (72), and Buick (72). As with last week's Dependability Study from J.D. Power, Fiat Chrysler brands littered the bottom of Consumer Reports' rankings. Fiat fared worst of all, with an overall score of just 41 points. Jeep didn't perform too much better, earning 45 points. Dodge did slightly better, coming in 27th place with a score of 56. Between Dodge and Jeep were Mitsubishi (51) and Land Rover (52). Other brands at the bottom included Jaguar, GMC, MINI, Volkswagen, and Nissan. As far as U.S. brands are concerned, Tesla was rated the best overall American brand and landed the highest road test rating of all marques included in the study. And though Chrysler ranked only 19th overall, with a score of 66, it took the prize for best road test score from a mainstream brand. However, Consumer Reports notes that Chrysler did so based on scores from just two models, one of which was the highly lauded Pacifica minivan. You can see how your favorite brands performed on Consumer Reports' interactive 2017 Brand Report Card.
