Why Manafort’s offer to cooperate in probe is less than meets the eye Posted: 24 Mar 2017 01:50 PM PDT WASHINGTON — A surprise offer by Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign manager, to "provide information" to congressional committees investigating links between the Trump campaign and Russia may be far more limited than it first appeared, according to congressional sources and others familiar with the matter. "Paul Manafort to Testify Before House Intelligence Panel," read the headline in the New York Times. |

The coincidences mount, as another Putin critic is shot dead Posted: 24 Mar 2017 03:12 PM PDT An outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in broad daylight in Kiev Thursday, just two days after a lawyer for the family of a slain Russian whistleblower was injured in a mysterious fall from his fourth-story apartment near Moscow. Denis Voronenkov was a former Russian Communist Party member who'd become increasingly critical of Putin's policies after fleeing to Ukraine in 2016. As it has after similar incidents, the Kremlin swiftly rejected any suggestion it was involved in Voronenkov's murder. |
Rail accident at N.Y.'s Penn Station snarls travel; minor injuries Posted: 24 Mar 2017 12:22 PM PDT A slow-moving Amtrak Acela train derailed and sideswiped a New Jersey commuter train on Friday, causing minor injuries and snarling morning rush-hour rail traffic at New York's Penn Station, a major transportation hub, officials said. The accident happened at about 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT), with passengers aboard the New Jersey Transit train describing hearing screeching metal as the Washington-bound Acela hit the commuter train while departing the station. "There was a loud sound of mangling metal and you felt the reverberations of another train raking the side of our train and I just heard screams from behind me as it traveled back," said Jordan Geary, who was traveling on the train with his wife from the New York suburb of Montclair, New Jersey. |

Tillerson's week: How top US diplomat’s ‘big reveal’ offered little clarity Posted: 24 Mar 2017 11:53 AM PDT The event was billed as a counter-ISIS conference, but for Rex Tillerson it was more like a coming-out party – with him starring as the diplomatic debutante. With all eyes on the new secretary of state with no formal diplomatic experience, the former ExxonMobil CEO offered the high-level representatives of the 68 countries in the US-led counter-ISIS coalition a bit of insight into his global philosophy and his approach to his new gig. |

Pro-Houthi court sentences Yemen president to death for treason Posted: 25 Mar 2017 01:10 PM PDT A Yemeni court in territory controlled by the armed Houthi movement sentenced the group's enemy in a two-year-old civil war President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and six other top officials in his government to death for "high treason" on Saturday. Saudi Arabia and a mostly Gulf Arab military coalition have launched thousands of air strikes and a small number of ground troops to try to dislodge the Houthis and restore Hadi to power. The Houthis, allied to Saudi Arabia's arch-enemy Iran, have progressively lost territory to the offensive but maintain control over the capital and most population centers. |

One dead after blasts at eastern Ukraine arms depot Posted: 24 Mar 2017 10:39 AM PDT Ukraine on Friday said one person has died as a result of a fire that broke out at an arms depot in the country's east, sparking explosions and forcing a mass evacuation. Ukrainian authorities have blamed Thursday's fire on an "act of sabotage" and opened investigations into possible "diversion" or negligence of military personnel. "The body of a woman born in 1951 was recovered from under the debris of a collapsed house," the head of Ukraine's emergency service, Mykola Chechotkin, said Friday, Interfax Ukraine news agency reported. |

Democratic opposition to U.S. high court nominee grows Posted: 24 Mar 2017 02:06 PM PDT By Lawrence Hurley and Andrew Chung WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A third of Democratic senators have so far announced they will vote against confirming U.S. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, adding to a chorus of opposition from the left, but leaving questions over whether there will be a concerted effort to block a vote in the Senate. To date, 16 of the 48 Democratic senators have publicly backed their leader, Chuck Schumer, who said on Thursday he opposes confirming appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch. Gorsuch is headed toward a Senate Judiciary Committee vote, likely on April 3, on his nomination to the high court after a marathon four-day confirmation hearing this week. |

Posted: 26 Mar 2017 08:58 AM PDT Bulgarian voters went to the polls Sunday in a tightly fought election pitting Socialists seen as closer to Russia against two-time centre-right premier Boyko Borisov, who is seeking another comeback. Opinion polls ahead of the vote in the European Union's poorest country, where the average monthly salary is just 500 euros ($540) and corruption is rife, also indicated a strong showing by nationalists. A close result is expected between the karate-kicking Borisov's enthusiastically pro-European Union GERB party and the Socialist Party (BSP), newly led by the energetic Kornelia Ninova. |

A Reuters reporter saw hundreds of police deployed to block off access points to the square where the protests were due to take place. Saturday's demonstration is the latest in a wave of protests since February that pose the biggest challenge in years to President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the ex-Soviet state with an iron fist for nearly a quarter of a century. |

Powerful Texas Republican sees tough road for 'bathroom bill' Posted: 24 Mar 2017 02:27 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - The Republican speaker of the Texas House of Representatives said on Friday a bill to limit bathroom access for transgender people would face a tough time in the chamber, where there are worries of an economic hit to the state if it became law. Speaker Joe Straus, who sets the Republican-dominated House's legislative agenda, stopped short of saying the measure was doomed. "I don't feel a great deal of fervor to promote that bill in the House," Straus said. |
