‘Well, history’: Fox’s Shep Smith says he tries to avoid quoting Kellyanne Conway Posted: 13 Mar 2017 01:32 PM PDT Fox News anchor Shep Smith dismissed White House counselor Kellyanne Conway's credibility on air Thursday, saying, "We don't really quote [her] anymore, because, well, history." The barbs were in response to Conway's defense of President Trump's unsubstantiated claim that President Obama ordered a wiretap of the phones in Trump Tower. "There are many ways to surveil each other," Conway said in a Sunday interview with the Record, a New Jersey newspaper. |

Key GOP senator: House may change bill after CBO projected hikes for seniors Posted: 14 Mar 2017 01:57 PM PDT President Trump, flanked by Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, left, and Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., at a White House meeting on health care March 10. WASHINGTON — House Republicans apparently told antsy senators in a closed-door meeting Tuesday they may try to amend their health care bill to address concerns that it would significantly increase costs for seniors. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., told reporters after the meeting that Reps. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, and Greg Walden, R-Ore., chairmen of the powerful Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees, said they realized the legislation's projected premium hikes for older Americans was an issue that must be addressed. |

U.S. Plains wildfires ravage ranches in three states Posted: 15 Mar 2017 07:38 AM PDT When the Schwerzenbach family saw a wildfire racing toward their remote ranch in Lipscomb, Texas, there was no time to run. "We had a minute or two and then it was over us," said 56-year-old Nancy Schwerzenbach. The fire, moving up to 70 miles per hour (112 kph), was one of several across more than 2 million acres (810,000 hectares) that hit the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and Kansas last week, causing millions of dollars of damage and killing thousands of livestock. |
After killing TPP, Trump to meet Xi, reassure allies Posted: 13 Mar 2017 02:51 PM PDT President Trump will host Chinese President Xi Jinping early next month, a potentially pivotal summit as the White House tries to reassure allies that the United States will stay engaged in the region after backing out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. The two leaders are tentatively expected to meet April 7-8, potentially at Trump's luxury Mar-a-Lago private club in Florida, a U.S. official confirmed on Monday. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will lock down the exact dates on his trip to Asia this week, the official added. |
White House insists President Trump is ‘proud of’ the health care bill even though ‘it’s not his’ Posted: 14 Mar 2017 02:22 PM PDT White House press secretary Sean Spicer distanced President Trump from the GOP health care bill in his daily briefing Tuesday while insisting the commander in chief is "proud of it." The plan, which would replace Obamacare, has come under fire from Democrats and conservatives. While Trump and his administration have backed the bill, it is the brainchild of House Speaker Paul Ryan, and contradicts many of the health care promises Trump made during his presidential campaign. |

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also announced the deportation of 50 North Korean workers in an apparent exception to a departure ban imposed after the killing of the half-brother of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un. |
Democrats blast ‘Trumpcare’ after CBO finds GOP plan would leave millions without coverage Posted: 14 Mar 2017 08:50 AM PDT Top congressional Democrats fiercely denounced the Republican-backed American Health Care Act (AHCA) on Tuesday, a day after the Congressional Budget Office predicted that the GOP plan would leave 14 million more Americans without health insurance by 2018 than under Obamacare, and by 2026, 24 million would be uninsured. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York speak to reporters about the Congressional Budget Office projection that 14 million people would lose health coverage under the House Republican bill dismantling former President Barack Obama's health care law, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Monday, March, 13, 2017. |

California's desert blooms as drought comes to an end Posted: 14 Mar 2017 09:25 AM PDT Southern California's deserts and hillsides are ablaze with color after a wet winter spurred what scientists say is the biggest wildflower bloom in years. "Plentiful rains in December, January and February have encouraged the development of a spectacular showing of annual plants in the flower fields north of town, along trails in western canyons, and even in the badlands," naturalists wrote on Anza-Borrego's website. Before the state's devastating five-year drought, Southern California families often made an annual trek to see wildflowers at Anza-Borrego and other destinations - some as close as a freeway exit in the high desert. |

Keeping an uncompromising tone in a tumultuous dispute that risks wrecking the entire Ankara-Brussels relationship, Erdogan said a 'yes' vote in a April 16 referendum on expanding his powers would be the best response to Turkey's "enemies". Ankara had a day earlier announced it was suspending high-level relations after The Netherlands prevented two Turkish ministers from holding rallies to woo expatriate support ahead of the referendum. |

OAS head says Venezuela should hold elections or face suspension from bloc Posted: 14 Mar 2017 06:55 PM PDT By Diego Oré CARACAS (Reuters) - The head of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Tuesday said that crisis-wrought Venezuela should be suspended from the regional diplomatic body if it does not hold general elections "as quickly as possible." Venezuela's election board in October suspended the opposition drive for a recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro despite the OPEC nation's crushing economic crisis, the government's unpopularity and public opinion in favor of a plebiscite. Luis Almagro, secretary general of the OAS and a former foreign minister of Uruguay, stressed that elections are key to allowing Venezuela to overcome severe food shortages and spiraling inflation. "What's happened doesn't leave any doubts," Almagro said on Tuesday. |
