Death toll from Mogadishu truck bomb rises to 276 in deadliest single attack ever in Somalia's capital

Death toll from Mogadishu truck bomb rises to 276 in deadliest single attack ever in Somalia's capitalThe death toll from a truck bomb that exploded near to a hotel and market in Mogadishu rose to 276 on Sunday, making it the worst terrorist atrocity in the country's history.  Saturday's savage attack targeted a busy street close to several important ministries in Somalia's capital. Officials say about 300 people were wounded. "This is the deadliest attack ever," police official Ibrahim Mohamed told AFP. "It is very difficult to get a precise number because the dead bodies were taken to different medical centres and some of them [were taken] directly by their relatives for burial." Most of the bodies in have been burnt beyond recognition, and police are braced for the number to rise due to the severity of the injuries sustained in the blast, which is the Horn Of Africa's deadliest single attack. Crowds gathered in Mogadishu yesterday (SUN) with protesters condemning the bloodshed.  The Somali government blamed the attack on Al-Shabaab, an Islamist terror group that has fought a long running insurgency against Mogadishu. The Al-Qaeda affiliated organisation had not claimed responsibility for the attack Sunday evening. Al-Shabaab has carried out multiple recent attacks on the city using grenades, guns and bombs in its quest to topple the government, which is backed by the UN, and rock the African Union.  In January, the group killed at least 28 by ramming a car bomb into a hotel near parliament and then detonating a second device when ambulances arrived on the scene. In June it murdered 31 in an attack on a pizza restaurant. Civilians evacuate from the scene of the explosion Credit: REUTERS/Feisal Omar The organisation was forced out of Mogadishu in 2011, and has recently suffered a series of severe territorial losses to African Union peacekeepers and government troops, supported by US drone strikes.  "They don't care about the lives of Somali people, mothers, fathers and children," Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said of the weekend's bombing. "They have targeted the most populated area in Mogadishu, killing only civilians." Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Sunday: "The UK condemns in the strongest terms the cowardly attacks in Mogadishu, which have claimed so many innocent lives.  "Those responsible have shown no regard for human life or the suffering of the Somali people. The UK will continue to support Somalia in the fight against terrorism." A Somali soldier helps a wounded civilian Credit: AP Photo/Farah Abdi Warsameh Despite the frequency of attacks on Mogadishu, the scale of the blast over the weekend has left the city reeling. Concrete buildings in the Hodan district were flattened by the explosion, with cars set on fire and smoke hanging heavy in the air. Hospitals put out desperate pleas for blood donations, and dazed people searched through piles of rubble, metal and bloodied sandals looking for family members. "With a heavy heart I would say this is the worst attack I have ever witnessed," Masoud Mohamed, who lost family members in the blast, told AP. Among those reported to have died in the attack are three brothers who worked at a nearby shopping centre, four volunteers with the Somali Red Crescent Society, and a local freelance journalist.

Pot farmer's dreams go up in smoke during California wildfiresAndrew Lopas' plans to bring his marijuana business out of the black market with a legal, profitable and organic pot farm went up in smoke in the wildfires that have scorched Santa Rosa, California. After four decades of growing pot illegally, the 54-year-old saw an opportunity last year to start a legitimate business serving the medical marijuana market. Last Sunday, as the wildfires, which have now killed at least 40 people, first erupted, Lopas' cannabis farm in Santa Rosa went up in flames, leaving behind the stumps of two chimneys, heaps of ash, charred marijuana plants and a despairing entrepreneur.

Airbus, Bombardier deal hits Boeing with double whammy

Posted: 17 Oct 2017 06:49 AM PDT

Airbus, Bombardier deal hits Boeing with double whammyAirbus and Bombardier are inflicting double damage on Boeing with a deal that fills a gap in the Europeans' aircraft range and gives Bombardier a fighting chance to avoid punishing US tariffs, analysts say. In the middle of the European night, Airbus issued a surprise announcement that it would take a majority stake in Bombardier's marquee C-Series airliner programme, aiming for significant production savings on the C-Series aircraft and making use of Airbus's international reach for sales. The agreement, which Airbus chief Tom Enders called "a win-win deal for everyone", gives the European company a stake in Bombardiers' mid-range programme without the need to immediately inject cash -- allowing it to keep its war chest intact for future battles with arch-rival Boeing.

US-backed forces begin assault on Isil-held Raqqa as scores of jihadis surrender

US-backed forces begin assault on Isil-held Raqqa as scores of jihadis surrenderUS-backed forces have commenced their assault on the last Isil-held districts of Raqqa after hundreds of Isil fighters and their families surrendered or fled the group's self-proclaimed capital. In the hours preceding Sunday's final push on Raqqa, some 275 militants and their families surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of Arab and Kurdish militias operating with hands-on US support. A day earlier, under an agreement brokered by local tribesmen and members of the Raqqa Civil Council, a convoy of fighters and civilians left the city for areas still controlled by the jihadi group: parts of Syria's Deir el-Zour province and Iraq's Anbar province, and a scattering of pockets elsewhere. Both deals aimed to limit the number of casualties in the days to come and reduce the possibility of civilians being used as human shields. Raqqa, the first Syrian city to fall to Isil, has witnessed some of the jihadist group's most obscene brutality. The battle for Raqqa As the self-styled capital of Isil's so-called caliphate, it also drew scores of would-be fighters from across the West and the Arab world. Some of these men are reported to have slipped out of Raqqa in Saturday's convoy, but the SDF and local activists say most of the foreign fighters remain in Raqqa, ready to fight to the end. They are believed to include a French or Belgian national who planned the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, which killed 130 people and injured hundreds more, said Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Mr Abdurrahman said the man was also behind an attack in Belgium in 2016.  The operation to wrest Raqqa from the jihadists' grip began in June and coalition planners say they now control all but 10 per cent of the city. "We still expect there to be difficult fighting," said Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the US-led international coalition. As of last week, an estimated 4,000 civilians were thought to still be inside Isil-controlled Raqqa.

Iraqi and Kurdish forces battle over Kirkuk as 'major operation' launched

Posted: 15 Oct 2017 09:42 PM PDT

Iraqi and Kurdish forces battle over Kirkuk as 'major operation' launchedIraqi and Kurdish forces exchanged artillery fire early Monday south of the city of Kirkuk, after central government forces began a "major operation" to take control of a Kurdish military base and oil fields. Iraqi forces said they had seized an oil field during the operation, which follows soaring tensions over an independence referendum. Iraq's Joint Operations Command said the forces took over the Baba Gargar oil field, one of six in the disputed Kirkuk region, as well as the headquarters of a public oil company. Shortly before, state television announced that government troops had taken "large areas" of the province from Kurdish peshmerga fighters "without fighting", although military sources on both sides reported exchange of Katyusha rocket fire to the south of the provincial capital. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who said this week that he was "not going... to make war on our Kurdish citizens", has "given orders to armed forces to take over security in Kirkuk," state television said. Iraqi troops will "secure bases and government facilities in Kirkuk province" the government said. They are aiming to retake military bases and oil fields which Kurdish peshmerga fighters took in 2014 during the fightback against the Islamic State jihadist group. Multiple peshmergas were injured in the clashes and hospitalised in Kirkuk, a local security source said. Abadi said that members of the Hashed al-Shaabi, the paramilitary Popular Mobilisation forces, which are dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias, would stay away from Kirkuk, where there have been multiple demonstrations against their involvement in the dispute. "Counter terrorism units, the 9th armoured division of the army, and the federal police have recovered control of important areas of Kirkuk province without fighting," a general from the counter terrorism force said. A counter terrorism force source said that their units had retaken the industrial zone of Kirkuk. At the same time, a local security source said four military vehicles were burned in an explosion. An AFP photographer saw columns of Iraqi troops heading north from the town of Taza Khurmatu, which is located south of Kirkuk. This image made from a video provided by RUDAW TV shows what the Irbil-based Kurdish broadcaster says are Peshmerga fighters and volunteers arriving on military trucks in Kirkuk, Credit: AP The advance came days after a standoff between Kurdish forces and the Iraqi army and the expiry of a deadline for Kurdish peshmerga fighters to withdraw from the areas they have controlled since 2014. Iraqi forces are seeking the "K1 base", just eight kilometres (five miles) north of Kirkuk, which was one of the main Iraqi army bases before it was taken over by the peshmerga in 2014. It stands near an oil refinery, The Iraqi troops also hope to retake the nearby airport. Earlier Sunday, Iraq's National Security Council said it viewed as a "declaration of war" the presence of "fighters not belonging to the regular security forces in Kirkuk", including fighters from Turkey's outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Crisis talks on Sunday made little headway in resolving an armed standoff between Kurdish and Iraqi forces in the province. Tensions have soared between the central government and Iraqi Kurds since they overwhelmingly voted for independence in a September 25 referendum, whose results Baghdad has demanded be nullified. Iraqi forces gather in the area of Taza Khurmata on the southern outskirts of Kirkuk  Credit: AFP For their part the Iraqi forces have said that they have no wish to enter Kirkuk but that they wish to retake military positions and infrastructure which were under their control before their troops withdrew in the face of hostility from the jihadists. On the fringes of the town, they used loudspeakers to call on the peshmerga to give up their positions, local sources said. Baghdad has demanded the Kurds scrap the results of the September 25 non-binding referendum that produced a resounding "yes" for independence for the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq. Tensions have soared in the wake of the vote, with the crisis raising fears of fresh chaos just as the country's forces are on the verge of routing IS from the last territory it controls in Iraq. Long claimed by the Kurds as part of their historic territory, the province has emerged as the main flashpoint in the dispute. Polling during the referendum was held not only in the three provinces of the autonomous Kurdish region but also in adjacent Kurdish-held areas, including Kirkuk, that are claimed by both Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan. The referendum was declared illegal by Baghdad and held despite international opposition. The Kurds control the city of Kirkuk and three major oil fields in the province that produce some 250,000 barrels per day, accounting for 40 percent of Iraqi Kurdistan's oil exports. The fields would provide crucial revenue to Baghdad, which has been left cash-strapped from the global fall in oil prices and three years of battle against IS. Iraq is also demanding the return of a military base and a nearby airport, according to the Kurds.

The heartwarming moment a family discovers their dog survived a deadly California wildfire

Posted: 15 Oct 2017 10:54 AM PDT

The heartwarming moment a family discovers their dog survived a deadly California wildfireA family was elated to discover that their Bernese Mountain Dog, Izzy, somehow managed to survive the wildfires that have ravaged areas of California.  Jack Weaver and his brother-in-law Patrick Widen hiked miles to Weaver's mother's home in Santa Rosa earlier this week. Despite being turned away by police, the men managed to make their way to the property for an important mission.  SEE ALSO: Striking images reveal wineries devastated by wildfires Although most valuables had been destroyed in the wildfire that ripped through the city, the men returned to the burned down home to retrieve the body of the family dog, which was presumed dead, the Associated Press reports. But when the men arrived on the scene, Izzy was there waiting for them to return, tail wagging as they approached.  "The anticipation is killing me," Jack can be heard saying in a clip, later uploaded to Facebook by Beckyjean Widen, Jack's sister. The men start to desperately call for Izzy, clapping and whistling. Finally, one of the men spots the dog, and the two immediately break down. "Izzy's here! Izzy! Izzy, come here, baby!" Jack says as the very good dog happily approaches. According to the post from Beckyjean Widen, her parents were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night, and in all the chaos, Izzy ran away. Their mother, Kathy Weaver, was obviously upset they were forced to leave the family dog. "They lost everything, but my mom was most devastated about leaving Izzy," Beckjean wrote. "She went from being devastated about losing her home to the being the happiest person I've ever seen. I couldn't get home fast enough. She was really, really happy ... She's still shaken up by the whole thing, but she's in much better spirits now that Izzy is at our house," Jack told the Associated Press.  A vet check revealed that 9-year-old Izzy was unharmed in the fire, which is miraculous considering the destruction the fires have caused.  The Tubbs fire burned over 35,000 acres in Santa Rose, and is only 60 percent contained as of Sunday, according to California firefighters. Overall, the multiple fires that started first on Oct. 8 are responsible for the deaths of at least 40 people, making it the deadliest wildfire outbreak in the state's history. Madrid set to impose direct rule on Catalonia as independence deadline passes

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 03:11 AM PDT

Madrid set to impose direct rule on Catalonia as independence deadline passesThe Spanish government has warned Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont he faces his final chance to relinquish independence within three days or it would trigger Article 155, the so-called 'nuclear option' which would override Catalonia's autonomy. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had set a deadline of 10am local time yesterday for Mr Puigdemont to clarify whether or not the autonomous region had made a unilateral declaration of independence last week. The Catalan president responded with a four-page letter that did not directly answer the question but instead stressed a mandate for independence and called for urgent dialogue.   The Spanish government had made clear that anything less than a "No" would set in motion Article 155, a never-used constitutional tool allowing it to effectively suspend autonomous powers and rule directly from Madrid.  Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has a set a deadline for overriding Catalonia's autonomy. Credit: Lavandeira jr/EFE  That is now set to be applied on Friday, if Mr Puigdemont does not reverse his position during a further three-day grace period. The Spanish deputy prime minister, Maria Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, said the government interpreted his response as a confirmation that declaration had indeed been declared. Demanding Mr Puigdemont retract this by Thursday at 10am, she insisted it was "in his hands to avoid the next steps". Mr Puigdemont, who had been under heavy pressure from independence hardliners to confirm an abrupt split from Spain, had called for an urgent meeting with Mr Rajoy in his letter. He said the banned independence referendum had returned a mandate for an independent state but insisted the regional government's priority was a negotiated solution, eyeing a two-month period for dialogue. Carles Puidgemont delivering a speech at the Fossar de la Pederera Credit: Ivan Alvarado/Reuters Mr Rajoy responded with a letter of his own, in which he told Mr Puigdemont he still had a chance to respond in a "clear and simple way" to Madrid's request. If he did not do so, he "will be the only one responsible for the application of the constitution," he said.  Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish foreign minister, said "the most radical influences had prevailed" in Mr Puigdemont's decision. But the Catalan president's letter did not go far enough to satisfy the CUP, the hard Left partner that is crucial to the Catalan government's parliamentary majority, which is now pushing for a clear affirmation of independence on Thursday.  "The CUP would have sent a very different letter," said parliamentarian Mireia Boya. Further adding to tensions yesterday, the Catalan police chief and the leaders of two major pro-independence groups appeared in court in Madrid to face allegations of sedition. The Spanish attorney general asked the judge to remand Major Josep Lluis Trapero in custody, with judicial sources quoted by La Vanguardia citing fears he could continue to give orders to the Catalan force to subvert Madrid's clampdown. The #MeToo hashtag was used in an enormous number of tweets

The #MeToo hashtag was used in an enormous number of tweetsFollowing a week of more devastating and disturbing news about film producer Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood actor Alyssa Milano took to social media to ask women to share their own personal experiences of sexual harassment and sexual assault. In a message posted Sunday, she asked Twitter users to reply "me too" to her tweet if they had been sexually harassed or assaulted in order to "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem." They responded in droves and the resulting hashtag #MeToo swept round the internet as a huge viral moment. SEE ALSO: Women endure a lifetime of sexual harassment even before they enter the workplace Milano's tweet was retweeted more than 17,000 times in 24 hours and on Sunday alone the #MeToo hashtag had been used 109,451 times, according to data from social analytics company Crimson Hexagon.  That's a huge number, especially when compared to other feminist hashtags, such as #YesAllWomen and #EverydaySexism, that have resurfaced over the course of 2017. Image: Crimson hexagon#YesAllWomen exploded onto Twitter itself in the wake of the Elliot Rodger shooting that targeted women in 2014, and was used on 61,500 tweets on May 25 that year. It made a resurgence in January in response to the molestation of women in India during New Year's Eve celebrations. Within the two days following the groping incident, the hashtag had been used almost 6,000 times, according to Crimson Hexagon. Users tweeted out #YesAllWomen over 10,000 times in the month of January.  The official national poster of #IWillGoOut is up! The Twitter account Everyday Sexism acts as a curator of these stories, in order to "show how bad the problem is."#EverdaySexism has been widely used by Twitter users throughout the year, especially in August when it was tweeted out more than 9,000 times, according to Crimson Hexagon. Is there anything more infuriating than a cover letter addressed 'Dear Sirs' #everydaysexism pic.twitter.com/kYl8BZLQ2t — Charlotte Morgan (@charmorgan_) October 16, 2017 As popular as other feminist hashtags have been this year, #MeToo amassed more uses in less than 24 hours than both #EverydaySexism and #YesAllWomen have for the entire year. This instantaneous surge shows a massive success on behalf of Milano and other women to draw attention to the injustices that they have faced. #MeToo tweets by the Women's March, NARAL, and others have been retweeted thousands of times. To all the women sharing stories of sexual assault and sexual harassment, thank you for your bravery to speak up. You are not alone. #MeToo — Women's March (@womensmarch) October 15, 2017 It's not your clothing. It's not your feminism. It's not your education. It's your assailant. #MeToo — quinn cummings (@quinncy) October 15, 2017 To everyone sharing their stories of sexual assault: thank you for your bravery. We see you. We believe you. We stand with you. #MeToo — NARAL (@NARAL) October 16, 2017 If you aren't okay w posting #MeToo, know this:1. I believe you.2. You don't have to speak up to be brave. Living in the after is brave. — Bindas Ladki (@bindasladki) October 16, 2017 There are literally 4 tweets per second of women posting the #metoo, indicating that they were too a victim of sexual assault. This really shows the breadth of just how serious Sexual Assault is, not only in America, but everywhere in the world. I feel disgusted and sad. — Ed Krassenstein (@EdKrassen) October 15, 2017 Per data collected by Crimson Hexagon, tweets using #MeToo primarily focus on assault and harassment, while #EverydaySexism mostly relates to the treatment of women in the workplace, with "bullying" and "management" as two of the top terms used with the hashtag. #YesAllWomen is often used in association with a multitude of other hashtags, including #equality, #humanrights, #blacklivesmater, and #intersectionalfeminism.  #MeToo Word CloudImage: CRIMSON HEXAGON#MeToo has brought female voices back to Twitter in full force after last week's #WomenBoycottTwitter movement in response to actor Rose McGowan's temporary suspension from the site.  WATCH: Meet the female astronaut making record-breaking space history

Exelixis drug improves overall survival in liver cancer patientsExelixis Inc's drug to treat a type of liver cancer improved overall survival in patients in a late-stage study that prompted an independent expert group to recommend no further trial, sending the company's shares soaring 31 percent. In the latest trial, the drug, cabozantinib, showed statistically significant improvement in overall survival in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who had been previously treated with Bayer and Amgen's sorafenib, as compared with a placebo, the company said.
