End of Australia auto-making sector as Holden closes doors Posted: 19 Oct 2017 10:44 PM PDT The last car rolled off the production line of Australian automaker Holden on Friday, marking the demise of a national industry unable to stand up to global competition. The closure of the Elizabeth plant in South Australia is the end of an era for Holden, which first started in the state as a saddlery business in 1856 and made the nation's first mass-produced car in 1948. The brand has long been an Australian household name, with 1970s commercials singing that "football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars" were part of the nation's identity. |

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 03:59 PM PDT The US Central Intelligence Agency thinks that North Korea's Kim Jong-un is a rational actor who is focused on staying in power and "waking up in his own bed" each day. But if Mr Kim should suddenly not show up for work, well, don't ask US spy chief Mike Pompeo about it. "With respect to, if Kim Jong-un should vanish, given the history of the CIA, I'm just not going to talk about it," the CIA director said on Thursday, when asked what would happen if Kim suddenly died. "Someone might think there was a coincidence. 'You know, there was an accident.' It's just not fruitful," he said to laughs from a Washington audience full of national security officials. The US agency has a dark history of involvement in plots to overthrow or eliminate leaders in countries like Iran, Cuba, Congo, Vietnam and Chile. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is reportedly 'nervous' about being assassinated Credit: AFP North Korea alleged earlier this year that the CIA working with South Korean intelligence had tried to kill Mr Kim, 33, without offering any proof. South Korea's intelligence agency said earlier this year that Mr Kim was "extremely nervous" about plots to assassinate him and uses a number of ruses to foil would-be assailants. Mr Pompeo, speaking to a forum held by the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, stressed that US policy was to "diplomatically and economically challenge the North Korean regime" to convince Mr Kim to pull back on his emerging nuclear threat to the United States. North Korea | Kim Jong-un's fiery relationship with the US "Kim Jong-un's mission is just to stay in power," he said. But Mr Pompeo, who became director of the CIA in January, added he was revitalising the agency's field missions. "We are going to become a much more vicious agency," he said. |

With tears and song, China welcomes Xi as great, wise leader Posted: 19 Oct 2017 08:25 AM PDT By Christian Shepherd and Philip Wen BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese officials on Thursday heaped praise on President Xi Jinping's political ideology, unveiled a day earlier at a key Communist Party Congress, a sign that it could be enshrined in the party's constitution and further cement his power. Some ruling Communist Party officials were moved on Thursday to song, dance and tears in adulation of Xi, a day after he opened the twice-a-decade conclave pledging to build a prosperous "modern socialist country" for a "new era". Three outgoing members of the elite seven-man Politburo Standing Committee that Xi heads lauded "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era", according to the official Xinhua News Agency. |
