Europe is getting its first underwater restaurant and the rest of the world should take note Posted: 25 Oct 2017 01:34 PM PDT Move over Seaworld, there's a new attraction in town and you can eat there. A Norwegian architecture firm, Snøhetta, is building Europe's first underwater restaurant called Under, and it hopefully won't be the last. SEE ALSO: Amazon just added a new feature that could mean big things for restaurants Image: snohetta website Image: snohetta websiteAccording to Snøhetta's website, the restaurant will have three levels: wardrobe area, champagne bar, and the dinning room. The restaurant will also function as a research center for marine life. Wanna eat dinner surrounded by marine life? We do, too. The restaurant will stand five meters deep (about 16 feet) below sea level and will serve seafood from lobster to truffles. Where's the sign up sheet? Image: snohetta websiteThe lead architect Rune Grasdal told CNN the benefits of the project and what guests can expect: "One of the benefits of this building is how it links nature and land, and how you can come safe from the land and in a very dramatic way go down through this concrete tube to the nature at sea level, and experience what normally is not experienced." While the restaurant won't be open until 2019, we'll just have to settle for the ones on land. WATCH: Baby manatees take to the sky for rehabilitation |

Caring police officer steps in after forgotten child is left alone on his birthday Posted: 25 Oct 2017 06:46 AM PDT A kind-hearted police officer has been praised for stepping in to help a boy celebrate his birthday after his parents failed to pick him up. Wisconsin's Green Bay Police Department (GBPD) officer Darryl Robinson took the boy out on his special day when he was left alone. The kind-hearted officer treated the boy to a meal at McDonald's and took him for a ride in his police car. GBPD posted on Facebook: "The parent is incarcerated and there were no other known family contacts. "Officer Robinson responded to a local elementary school for a child that was not picked up at the end of the school day," the post said. "Thanks to the owners of our local McDonald's, we were given free cheeseburger coupons to hand out in certain situations. Officer Robinson took the child for a meal at McDonald's and a ride around in the police car for his birthday." They added the family was eventually located and the child was dropped off. The department added: "Thank you to Officer Robinson for taking some extra time to celebrate the child's birthday; we are proud to have him as part of the GBPD team!" His actions were praised online, with one posting: "What a fine officer. No one is more committed to the community than Officer Darryl Robinson. That little boy will remember that for the rest of his life." Another wrote: "Thank you Officer Robinson for treating that young boy like a human being even though his parents are having a hard time right now." US Northwest could be hit by the worst natural disaster in the history of America any day Posted: 25 Oct 2017 05:36 AM PDT A new report has looked at the different ways an earthquake of epic proportions could wreak havoc in the Northwest of America. Citizens living in the vicinity of the Cascadia Subduction Zone have long been aware a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, which has been branded "The Really Big One", could hit the region on any given day. The quake, which is predicted to be the worst natural disaster in the history of the continent, would release damaging and probably deadly shaking in coastal Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and northern California. |

Republicans launch probe into Obama administration Russian uranium deal Posted: 24 Oct 2017 12:45 PM PDT Republicans in Washington have announced an investigation into a uranium deal with Russia negotiated by the Obama administration. The move was seen by Democrats as a Republican attempt to deflect attention away from continuing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in last year's presidential election. In doing so the Republicans are moving to resurrect allegations that the Obama administration, in which Hillary Clinton served as Secretary of State, mishandled the deal which gave Russia control over more than 20 per cent of US uranium supplies. Donald Trump and Republicans also allege that the uranium company donated to the Clinton Foundation to enlist Mrs Clinton's support - an accusation she dismissed as "baloney". The investigation centres on Rosatom, the state-owned Russian nuclear energy company, which began buying shares in Uranium One - a Toronto based enterprise with interests in the US - in 2009. Hillary Clinton Credit: Patrick Sermansky/AP Rosatom became majority shareholders the following year before later assuming full ownership of the company. The deal was approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a Government body made up of nine different administration agencies including the State Department. Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee insisted the new inquiry was separate from the investigation into its investigation of Russian involvement in the election. "Well, the current Russia investigation is about the election. This is more about uranium and whether or not government functioned properly or not," Mr Nunes said. |

Iraqi leader visits Iran as Tehran seeks to drive wedge with Washington Posted: 26 Oct 2017 02:59 AM PDT Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told Iraq's U.S.-backed prime minister on Thursday that he should not rely on the United States in the fight against Islamic State, seeking to drive a wedge between Washington and one of its close allies. "Unity was the most important factor in your gains against terrorists and their supporters," Khamenei told the visiting Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, according to state TV. "Don't trust America ... It will harm you in the future." Iraq is one of the only countries in the world that is closely allied to both the United States and Iran. |

Airlines get ready for new U.S. security rules from Thursday Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:00 PM PDT By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New security measures including stricter passenger screening take effect on Thursday on all U.S.-bound flights to comply with government requirements designed to avoid an in-cabin ban on laptops, airlines said Tuesday. Airlines contacted by Reuters said the new measures, which could include short security interviews with passengers, would be in place by Thursday. The United States announced the new rules in June to end its restrictions on carry-on electronic devices on planes coming from 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa in response to unspecified security threats. |
Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Posted: 25 Oct 2017 05:04 AM PDT Who wins? Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Army and industry weapons developers have begun work on an advanced next-generation Abrams tank specifically engineered with new weapons, ammunition, laser-spotters and advanced thermal sights able to outrange, outgun and outmatch the most modern Russian and Chinese tanks, service and industry officials said. Advanced networking technology with new, next-generation sights, sensors, targeting systems and digital networking - are all key elements of an ongoing upgrade to position the platform to, if needed, successfully engage in combat against rapidly emerging threats, such as the prospect of confronting a Russian T-14 Armata or Chinese 3rd generation Type 99 tank. |

Iraq rejects Kurds' offer to suspend independence drive as it launches new push for territory Posted: 26 Oct 2017 04:59 AM PDT An offer by Kurdistan's leaders to "freeze" their plans for independence have been rejected outright by Iraq's prime minister, who ordered his forces to push yet further into territory held by the Kurds. Iraq's central government "will accept only the cancelling of the referendum," Haider al-Abadi said in a statement on Thursday, warning he would protect the unity of Iraq with "high precision." Appearing to reject the olive branch, Iraqi troops launched an offensive against Kurdish fighters near the border with Turkey and Syria. The Fishkhabour and Habur border crossings are vital trading routes for Kurdistan as they host the pipelines through which they export hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil to Turkey. "Iraq's back in civil war," Aziz Ahmad, an adviser to the chancellor of the Kurdistan Region's security council, said. "Today's attack deepens public resentment in Kurdistan (…) in the next 24 hours Abadi will have squandered the world's support." Iraqi Kurds wave flags and chant slogans during a protest outside the US Consulate on October 21, 2017 in Erbil, Iraq. Credit: Getty Sporadic fighting has erupted over the past week between Kurdish and Iraqi forces, former allies in the battle against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), as government forces with allied mostly Shia militias retook the contested areas, including the city of Kirkuk. After days of largely low-level clashes, Kurdish leaders on Wednesday offered to suspend the September vote results to facilitate talks with Baghdad and end the violence. Should the border crossing fall back into Iraq's hand, not only would Iraqi Kurds lose a main trading route, the US-led coalition could lose access to its allies in Syria battling Isil. The spokesman for the coalition said recent fighting has impeded the movement of its military equipment in both Iraq and Syria, negatively impacting the campaign against the jihadist group. Mr Abadi's statement came as he met with Iranian officials in Tehran. Iran increasingly has moved into a prominent role in Iraq, a Shia-majority nation, especially in guiding militias against Isil. Donald Trump's administration has looked to try to limit Iran's influence in the Middle East with little success. For years, Baghdad has carefully avoided antagonising either Washington or Tehran. But the confrontation between the Iraqi central government and its Kurdish minority has threatened to tip the balance in Iran's favour. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei meets with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi in Tehran Credit: Reuters Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Mr Abadi about US policy toward Iraq during their meeting on Thursday, saying: "Be careful about Americans' deceit and never trust them." Kurdish leaders, who had enjoyed the support of the US during the battle against Isil around Mosul, now say they have been abandoned by their allies to fend for themselves against better-resourced Iraqi troops. "This behaviour continues because the US-led Global Coalition fails to apply the pressure necessary to stop Iraq's aggressive military attacks," the Kurdistan security council said in a statement. "We call on the international community to intervene immediately to stop Iraq's reckless behaviour." Washington has offered to broker talks between both sides, but has also stressed its support for "unity" in Iraq. |

German president tells Putin: we need to work on our relationship Posted: 25 Oct 2017 07:24 AM PDT German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday he was unhappy about the state of relations between Moscow and Berlin and that both sides needed to work to improve it. The first visit to Russia by a German president since 2010 happened as relations remain strained over Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and a pro-Russian separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine, as well as German accusations of Russian meddling in its politics, something Moscow denies. "It's essential that we use this opportunity for us as presidents to continue our dialogue to try to improve our bilateral relations, the state of which we can't be happy about," Steinmeier told Putin at the start of talks. |

Scandal-hit Japan automakers eye return to 'golden age' Posted: 25 Oct 2017 08:34 PM PDT Repeated quality scandals, stiff foreign competition and lagging technology have knocked Japan's auto giants off pole position but analysts say the once world-beating sector could yet steer itself to a comeback. Toyota, Nissan and small-car maker Suzuki were all showing off their next-generation wares at the Tokyo Motor Show this week, but the exhibition comes at a bad time for the industry. Nissan is embroiled in a quality inspection crisis that has seen it recall more than 1.2 million vehicles and suspend production of cars sold in its home market, while Mitsubishi Motors last year was caught fudging fuel-economy tests to make its cars seem more efficient than they were. |
US woman held hostage by Taliban group in Pakistan reveals truth behind her rescue Posted: 25 Oct 2017 10:22 AM PDT Caitlan Coleman, the 31-year-old American woman who gave birth to three children while held hostage by the Haqqani network, has disputed Pakistan's account of her rescue in an interview likely to embarrass the country's powerful military. Pakistan has long bridled at accusations it harbours militants including the Taliban-linked Haqqanis inside the country. Yet in her first interview since being released, Ms Coleman said that she and her family had spent "more than a year" in Pakistan before their rescue on Oct 11. Pakistan's military had claimed to have freed the hostages as they were crossing the border from Afghanistan. "We were not crossing into Pakistan that day", Ms Coleman told the Toronto Star, explaining that the Haqqanis had often kept her and her husband, whom they had captured in 2012, in Pakistan. The family passed their final few months in between Kohat and Banu, districts in the lawless tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, she said. According to Ms Coleman her husband, Joshua Boyle, 34, understood enough Farsi to keep tabs on their location. Such claims corroborate the view of US officials, who last week told Reuters they believed the couple were held near the Haqqanis' headquarters in northwest Pakistan. However, Ms Coleman also sought to clarify that the couple crossed the border regularly and, in contrast to the statement of CIA Director Mike Pompeo, did not spend the entire five years of their captivity in the country. Freed Canadian hostage Joshua Boyle speaks out after his release 01:55 The revelations come at a time when America is piling on pressure for Pakistan to "do more" in the fight against terrorism. Speaking from Delhi, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson yesterday said that extremists pose "a threat to Pakistan's own stability". "Nobody lends any credence to government claims that Haqqanis are not in Pakistan," said a security analyst, who requested anonymity. But Ms Coleman's statement "is a very blatant bit of counter-narrative". In the interview, Ms Coleman also confirmed that she was victim of rape and forced abortion while held hostage. The sexual assault, she said, came after her and Mr Boyle's attempt to pass out notes written on scraps of paper to passersby. The couple called the child they lost, "Martyr". Ms Coleman says oestrogen was added to her food in order to force a miscarriage, after Mr Boyle – who was previously married to the sister of a Guantanamo inmate – refused to join the Haqqanis. Ms Coleman, who wore a hijab during her interview, refused to comment on whether she had converted to Islam. |
