Hollywood accused of hypocrisy over Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations

Posted: 07 Oct 2017 05:19 PM PDT

Hollywood accused of hypocrisy over Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegationsHollywood has been accused of hypocrisy as allegations of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein, the volcanic-tempered movie mogul, were met with a "deafening silence" from A-list stars. Two days after the New York Times reported that Weinstein had reached at least eight legal settlements with women dating back decades, only a smattering of entertainment industry figures stepped up to condemn a man who has long held the power to make or break careers. Lisa Bloom, a feminist lawyer who had been criticised for her decision to advise Weinstein, announced on Saturday that she was resigning. But Rose McGowan, who reportedly settled a harassment case against Weinstein in 1997, said she had been expecting fellow actresses to speak out publicly.  "Ladies of Hollywood, where are you?" she wrote on Twitter. "Ladies of Hollywood, your silence is deafening." Harvey Weinstein McGowan, 44, best known for her role in the TV series Charmed, accused the industry, including agents, directors, producers, studio heads, and the actor's union of a "30-year cover up" which seemingly continued. By Saturday night those yet to comment publicly on the scandal included a host of actresses who have starred in Weinstein movies. They included Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who won an Oscar for the Weinstein-produced Shakespeare in Love. Harvey Weinstein with his wife Georgina Chapman Only one A-list star, Jessica Chastain, appeared to show support, voicing "respect" for McGowan and Ashley Judd, who told the New York Times that Weinstein, 65, had sexually harassed her in a hotel room. Donald Trump said he was not surprised by allegations that Weinstein sexually harassed women for nearly three decades. "I've known Harvey Weinstein for a very long time, I'm not at all surprised to see it," the US president said. Anthony Bourdain, a high profile celebrity chef, called the Hollywood A-list "nauseating, chicken-hearted enablers all".  He added: "Where's the loud, vocal support for these women? Mostly a shameful silence. I'm talking about all the people who knew and said nothing - and those who are STILL staying silent." Harvey Weinstein with Kylie Minogue According to the New York Times Weinstein targeted young actresses and his own staff, appearing naked in front of them, and asking them to massage him or watch him shower. Weinstein has admitted to having caused "a lot of pain" and apologised. He asked for a "second chance," saying he is undergoing therapy. He also threatened to sue the New York Times for "reckless reporting". In a separate development Lauren Sivan, a television reporter, alleged that Weinstein cornered her in the kitchen of a restaurant in New York, which left her deeply shocked. Weinstein, a father-of-two married to British fashion designer Georgina Chapman, has been a powerhouse in Hollywood for decades. He formed the Miramax production house in the late 1970s with his brother Bob, later selling it to Disney and going on to form The Weinstein Company. He helped propel Oscar-winning movies like Good Will Hunting, The Artist, and The King's Speech The Weinstein Company announced it was launching an investigation and bringing in an outside legal firm to conduct it. Harvey Weinstein has threatened legal action after a bombshell expose of sexual harassment claims Amid suggestions Weinstein would be suspended the company later said he would be on "indefinite leave". Discussions were said to have been typically heated and a third of the nine-member board resigned. In a statement the company said: "As Harvey has said it is important for him to get professional help for the problems he has acknowledged. "Next steps will depend on Harvey's therapeutic progress, the outcome of the board's independent investigation and Harvey's own personal decisions." In an unconfirmed report the New York Post suggested that Bob Weinstein could have leaked details of his brother's history of harassment cases. "Bob's wanted Harvey out for years," a former employee told the New York Post. Later, Mika Brzezinksi, a high profile morning television host, said she was not going ahead with a three-book deal she had signed with Weinstein Books. She said: "Authors, actors, and movie-makers should not work for any Weinstein company until he resigns. Not a close call." Bloom had come under fire for her decision to advise Weinstein. The high profile lawyer previously represented accusers of Bill O'Reilly, the former Fox News host who was revealed to have settled harassment cases. She described Weinstein's behaviour as "gross" but said she had been "blunt" with him, and he was a "dinosaur" who was changing. Bloom's mother, the equally high profile lawyer and women's rights campaigner Gloria Allred, had offered to represent accusers of Weinstein "even if it meant that my daughter was the opposing counsel".

South of New Orleans, Nate spares parish devastated by Hurricane KatrinaBy Jessica Resnick-Ault BELLE CHASSE, La. (Reuters) - Residents of Louisiana's lower Plaquemines Parish, the swampy peninsula that shadows the Mississippi River as it empties into the Gulf of Mexico, know Nate let them off very easy, certainly when compared with hurricanes of years past. As the Category 1 storm approached this weekend, memories of the devastation of Katrina 12 years ago, and to a lesser extent, Issac in 2012, loomed large in the scattered hamlets that cling to the few spots of terra firma that line the river south of New Orleans. "I had prayed for this - that we would be spared," said Amos Cormier, president of the parish, Louisiana's equivalent to a county.

India bans Diwali firecrackers in Delhi in bid to reduce toxic smog

Posted: 09 Oct 2017 05:18 AM PDT

India bans Diwali firecrackers in Delhi in bid to reduce toxic smogIndia's Supreme Court has temporarily banned the sale and distribution of firecrackers in the federal capital New Delhi ahead of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, in a bid to control escalating air pollution. The court ruled on Monday that the ban would last till Nov 1, 13 days after Diwali. But it declared that those who had already bought firecrackers would be allowed to set them off.   The order came in response to several petitions, including one by children, demanding a ban on polluting firecrackers which last year saw Delhi's air reaching hazardous levels and the closure of all city schools for three days. Around 50,000 tons of crackers are let off every year in Delhi on and around Diwali to celebrate the victory of good over evil. "We are the most vulnerable when it comes to air pollution, especially from suspended particles and toxins from firecrackers," stated the children's petition, adding that these led to lung disease, asthma, bronchitis and cognitive impairment. Tens of thousands of firecrackers are sold and set off every year  Credit: AP "This is a nice step, let us look at other sources of air pollution too," tweeted global environmental group Greenpeace, echoing the feelings of many Delhi residents. But others dismissed the Supreme Court ban as an infringement of tradition and custom, and vowed to defy the firecracker ban. "The court cannot impose a ban on bursting firecrackers during Diwali as that is the essence of this festival," said housewife Shakuntla Devi. "We will get firecrackers somehow, and celebrate in traditional style," she added. Critics say the tradition has exacerbated Delhi's existing pollution levels, among the world's highest. Delhi tops the list of 20 most polluted cities in the country, and 1.2 million people die each year due to air pollution, according to a recent report by Greenpeace India. Smog envelopes New Delhi, one of the worst polluted cities in the world  Credit: AFP Pollution levels in the city recently reached their worst level in nearly two decades, almost 15 times over the permissible limit, according to official estimates.  The situation is aggravated further by smoke emanating from thousands of farmers burning unwanted vegetation on their farms in neighbouring Haryana and Punjab states, ahead of planting their winter wheat crop.     Visibility in the smog-choked city of over 17 million people is normally low, with tens of thousands of residents regularly donning gas masks, complaining of breathlessness, watering eyes and of wheezing. Doctors in Delhi said spending a day outdoors in the city is akin to smoking a packet and a half of cigarettes and warn that if these conditions persisted, the atmosphere could turn carcinogenic.  The report by Greenpeace also claimed that fatalities due to air pollution were only a "fraction less" than those caused by tobacco usage.

P&G counters that Peltz's campaign is based on an outdated perspective on the company and ignores key hires of outsiders as well as progress since its decision in 2014 to divest dozens of underperforming products in order to target giant brands that resonate best with consumers.

Senior Catholic cleric resigns after secret family revealed

Posted: 08 Oct 2017 07:09 AM PDT

Senior Catholic cleric resigns after secret family revealedThe former rector of a prominent Legion of Christ seminary in Rome is leaving the priesthood after admitting to having a secret family, including two children of his own, which he concealed for years from Roman Catholic authorities.  The conservative Catholic order announced this weekend that Father Oscar Turrion, a popular 49-year-old Spanish priest who was made rector of the Pontifical Maria Matter Ecclesiae International College in Rome in 2014, will leave the priestly ministry in order to dedicate more time to a family he has raised clandestinely until now.   Back in March, Father Turrion first told his superiors at the Pontifical Maria Matter Ecclesiae International College, which houses approximately 100 male diocesan seminarians from around the globe, that he had recently fathered a daughter. As Roman Catholic priests are bound to a vow of celibacy, the order offered him a "period of reflection," and then in August appointed a substitute rector.   The Legion revealed this week that Father Turrion told authorities in a letter he had decided to leave the ministry after admitting that his infant daughter is in fact the second child he fathered with a woman he fell in love with several years ago when the order was going through a period of turmoil. He kept the first-born child, a son reportedly born eight years ago, and the ongoing relationship with the child's mother, a closely guarded secret for years, including during the period he was being considered for rector. In a letter released by the Legion, Turrion asked for prayers and "foregiveness for the scandal . . for my bad example."  Popular and passionate about football,  Father Turrion was one of the few ordained priests invited each year to join the seminarians on the field in the Clericus Cup, an annual football tournament between teams from the Rome seminary colleges. The shock revelation has rattled the institution, which said in a statement it was saddened and "conscious of the impact that the negative example" had set to seminarians and the Christian faithful. The order faced a similar scandal in 2013, when American priest Thomas Williams, a professor of moral theology at the Legion's university in Rome and a prominent TV commentator, also announced he would leave the priesthood after admitting he had fathered a child. And in 2006 the Vatican sentenced its founder, Mexican Father Marcial Maciel Delgollado to a life of "prayer and penance" after discovering he had sexually abused seminarians and fathered at least three children out of wedlock.  Today, the subject of how to manage priests secretly fathering children is gradually becoming less taboo inside the Vatican, thanks in part to the persistent efforts of Vincent Doyle, an Irish Catholic psychotherapist who discovered that his father had been a priest and went on to found the Coping International support group for children of priests, who he said often face emotional, psychological and financial difficulties after years of living with "guilty secrets."  Earlier this year Irish Catholic bishops passed new guidelines for "the principles of responsibility regarding priests who father children while in the ministry," urging the wellbeing of the child to be put first, personally, legally and financially.

How high is air pollution in your city and how does it compare to the most polluted cities in the world?

Posted: 09 Oct 2017 12:18 AM PDT

How high is air pollution in your city and how does it compare to the most polluted cities in the world?Pollution is a greater global threat than Ebola and HIV, according to warnings by the World Health Organisation.  According to its recent report, one in four deaths among children aged under five are now due to environmental hazards such as air pollution and contaminated water. Previously this year, air pollution levels in London were worse than those in Beijing for a brief period - with the UK capital's pollutants frequently breaking UK limits.  Now, the UK Government plans to tackle such dangers by banning diesel and petrol cars by 2040. But how bad is air pollution in other areas of the UK? Search for your postcode to see how bad air pollution is in your area How high is air pollution in your area? How does the UK compare to the world? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), London is just a mid-table city when it comes to the international league table of polluted places. London only ranked 1,389th out of the nearly  3,000 cities and towns around the world monitored in the WHO's database of annual air pollution readings. Which cities have the worst air pollution levels? WHO guidelines state that cities should aim to have an annual average of no more than 10 micrograms of PM2.5 (very fine particulate matter) for every cubic metre of air. London had an annual PM2.5 average of 15 μg/m3 in 2013, far lower than Beijing's average of 85.2 μg/m3. These particles are very small in diameter and are classed as carcinogenic by leading health organisations. Thousands of deaths a year are attributable to air pollution in the UK. London pollution - what causes it and how can you stay safe? 01:33 Which cities have the highest air pollution levels worldwide? According to the WHO, the most polluted city in the world is Zabol in Iran. Zabol's PM2.5 measurements were found to average a massive 217 μg/m3 for the latest available year - more than 20 times higher than the recommended level. The next two entries on the list are both located in India (Gwalior and Allahabad) while the first non-Asian city on the list is Bamenda in Cameroon which came in eighth place.  Tetovo in Macedonia was the most polluted European city in the database, followed by Tuzla in  Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most polluted city in the UK isn't actually London. Glasgow topped that list, followed by Scunthorpe and Leeds with London in sixth place. However, given that these rankings are based on figures taken in 2013, the situation may have changed since. London may also experience greater peaks in air pollution but these figures are all annual averages. Table - The 100 most air polluted cities in the world
