Nancy Pelosi, leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, held out hope for a bipartisan agreement this month. |
Teacher handcuffed, arrested and removed from school board meeting after challenging teacher pay Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:36 AM PST A Louisiana teacher was forcibly removed from a school board meeting and arrested after saying that pay raises for leadership on the board was a "slap in the face" to all teachers. Deyshia Hargrave, a teacher in the Vermilion Parish School System, asked questions regarding the board's consideration of a $38,000 raise for the superintendent of the school system. Ms Hargrave appeared to leave the meeting willingly after the officer approached her and asked her to do so, but in the hallway video showed that she was on the ground being handcuffed and asking "what are you doing?" repeatedly. |
Conservatives Alarmed By Trump’s ‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform’ Talk Posted: 09 Jan 2018 06:16 PM PST WASHINGTON ― During a televised meeting with lawmakers at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump seemed to endorse a number of controversial immigration positions that are giving conservatives on Capitol Hill some cause for concern, particularly a taboo term among Trump's base: "comprehensive immigration reform." |

China races to prevent environmental disaster from stricken tanker Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:58 PM PST China raced to contain oil leaking from an Iranian tanker stricken off its eastern coast Tuesday amid warnings the burning ship could spark an environmental disaster. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of light crude oil when it collided with a cargo ship on Saturday and erupted into flames 160 nautical miles east of Shanghai. If all the cargo from the Panamanian-flagged 274-metre (899-foot) tanker spills, it would be the biggest oil slick from a ship in decades and could kill marine life across a vast area, analysts have said. |

Judge ends case over standoff in Nevada land dispute Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:47 PM PST By John L. Smith LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday threw out a criminal case against a Nevada rancher and three other men over a 2014 militia standoff with federal agents, saying prosecutors had repeatedly withheld evidence from the defense. U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro dismissed the case "with prejudice," meaning that rancher Cliven Bundy, two of his sons and a militia member will not face another trial. Navarro had declared a mistrial last month. |

Israeli air strikes, rockets hit Syria: Syrian army Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:01 AM PST The Israeli army carried out air strikes and fired rockets at targets in Syria overnight, causing damage near a military position, the Syrian army said Tuesday. Israel's military has carried out several attacks on the Syrian army and its ally Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011. The Israeli air force conducted strikes on the Qutayfeh area northeast of Damascus, causing the Syrian army to retaliate and "hit one of its planes", the Syrian army said in a statement. |

The Evolution of the North Korea Crisis through China's Eyes Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:07 PM PST Beijing is "riding the waves" of the current crisis and hoping for a soft landing. News of border talks between North Korea and South Korea can only be positive given the dangerous depths that this crisis had plumbed in recent months. What could break the alliance, however, is the perception growing in South Korea that Americans are willing to flirt with the possibility of initiating (nuclear) war. |

Supreme Court sides with death row inmate over racist juror claim Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:38 AM PST The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for a black Georgia inmate to challenge his 1991 death sentence for killing his sister-in-law after he argued the case was tainted by a racist white juror who questioned whether black people have souls. The justices, in a 6-3 unsigned decision, threw out a lower court's decision that had rejected his biased jury assertion. Keith Tharpe was found guilty and sentenced to death by a jury of 10 white people and two black people in Georgia's Jones County. |
Protests turn violent in Tunisia over price hikes Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:00 AM PST More than 200 people have been arrested and dozens hurt during clashes in several parts of Tunisia, the interior ministry said Wednesday, after a second night of unrest driven by anger over austerity measures. The North African country has been hailed for its relatively smooth democratic transition since its 2011 uprising, but seven years after the revolution tensions over economic grievances are high. Tunisia has seen rising anger over hikes in value-added tax and social contributions after a tough new budget was applied at the start of the year. |

Poles in shock as PM carries out sweeping reshuffle ahead of EU showdown Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:39 AM PST A number of high-profile ministers in the Polish government have been sacked in a sweeping overhaul of the country's cabinet seen as an attempt to reform the country's international image left battered by a series of bruising conflicts with the EU. The ministers of foreign affairs, defence, health and agriculture were among those who lost their jobs in the shake-up, the extent of which caught many Poles by surprise. It also came just hours before Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister, was due to fly to Brussels to meet Jean Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, to discuss rule of law proceedings against Poland. "This is a new government for a new and better Poland," said Mr Morawiecki when announcing the changes. "For us the most important matter is to build a strong and safe Poland, both at its borders and within in borders." Mr Morawiecki, an English-speaking ex-banker who only became prime minister last month, is also seen as part of a diplomatic offensive to enhance the country's reputation. Poland has become the enfant terrible of the EU owing to numerous disputes between it and Brussels on matters such as rule of law, the environment and migration. The country became the first EU state to face the possible loss of voting rights after the EU triggered Article 7 owing to fears a government overhaul of the legal system threatened the independence of the judiciary. But despite the threats from the EU Warsaw appears happy to defy Brussels in its desire to put what it considers Poland's interests first. Yet the appointment of a new prime minister and Tuesday's cabinet changes appear, in part, to be motivated by a desire to soften and lighten the tone of the Polish government abroad, although few expect its core message to change. Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki poses with his cabinet after a sweeping reshuffle. A showdown with the EU is looming Credit: AGENCJA GAZETA/ REUTERS Among those to face the chop was Jan Szyszko, the agriculture minister. Mr Szyszko triggered an international scandal by overseeing increase in logging in the Bialowieza Forest, one of the last significant tracts of primeval lowland forest left in Europe. Despite the threat of financial penalties from the EU if the logging was not halted, and Mr Szyszko persisted with the policy. He will join Witold Waszczykowski, the former foreign minister, and ex-defence minister Antoni Macierewicz in the political long grass. Mr Waszczykowski had become known as gaffe-prone, while Mr Macierewicz, despite being a fierce ally of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice party, had clashed with the Polish president over the appointment of army commanders. Political experts in Poland pointed out that by dismissing the three ministers, Mr Kaczynski had removed figures who had become focal points of opposition criticism. By cutting out apparent weaknesses in the government Mr Kaczynski may also have one eye on the next general election, due in 2019. |

Ecuador seeks mediator to resolve Assange standoff: minister Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:25 AM PST Ecuador is seeking a mediator to resolve the standoff with Britain on the future of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in its London embassy since 2012, the South American country's foreign minister said Tuesday. Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said the South American country was looking at the possibility of a "third country or a personality" stepping in to settle the five-year impasse. Assange, an Australian citizen now aged 46, moved into Ecuador's embassy to avoid arrest over a now-dropped Swedish investigation into rape allegations. |
