Ecuador grants citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Assange Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:28 PM PST Ecuador said Thursday it had granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in an unsuccessful attempt to provide him with diplomatic immunity and usher him out of its London embassy without the threat of arrest by Britain. Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said the 46-year-old Australian, who has been holed up at the embassy for five years to avoid arrest, became an Ecuadoran citizen on December 12. |

Russia deploys more surface-to-air missiles in Crimean build-up Posted: 13 Jan 2018 02:20 AM PST Russia deployed a new division of S-400 surface-to-air missiles in Crimea on Saturday, Russian news agencies reported, in an escalation of military tensions on the Crimean peninsula. Russian annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, triggering economic sanctions by the European Union and United States and a tense stand-off in the region. The U.S. said in December it planned to provide Ukraine with "enhanced defensive capabilities", which officials said included Javelin anti-tank missiles.. Moscow's latest deployment represents the second division armed with S-400 air defense systems on the peninsula, after the first in the spring of 2017 near the port town of Fedosia. |

Fires and mudslides have some rethinking the California dream Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:48 AM PST A few who live amid the usually serene beauty and year-round warmth of Santa Barbara County say nature's recent onslaughts of wildfires and mudslides have dampened their California dreams. For Hannah Troy, the twin blows of the Thomas Fire, which scorched parts of Santa Barbara last month in the biggest wildfire in the state's history, and this week's deadly mudslides only deepened her unease about the landscapes around her. "California to me feels like it's just becoming a flourishing tinderbox," Troy said at a Red Cross shelter at a college in Santa Barbara, a wealthy city a couple hour's drive up the Pacific coast from Los Angeles. |

Fossil fuels blown away by wind in cost terms: study Posted: 13 Jan 2018 01:48 AM PST New onshore wind and solar energy projects are set to deliver electricity more cheaply than fossil fuels plants, with other green technologies also rapidly gaining a cost advantage over dirty fuels, a report published Saturday said. According to a new cost analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), within two years "all the renewable power generation technologies that are now in commercial use are expected to fall within the fossil fuel-fired cost range, with most at the lower end or undercutting fossil fuels". |

Russia's army warns of 'terrorist' drones after attacks Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST Russia's defence ministry on Thursday said it was concerned about the threat of drones used "for terrorist purposes" following recent attacks on Moscow's bases in Syria. Ten drones equipped with explosives attacked Russia's airbase in Hmeimim in the early hours of January 6, while three others targeted its naval base in the port of Tartus, according to the military. The defence ministry said there were no casualties or damage in the incidents, but warned that similar technology could be used to wage terror anywhere in the world. |

Connecticut police commend 'heroic' response to Sandy Hook massacre Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:55 PM PST The 74-page report detailed state police response to the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School, one of the five deadliest mass shootings by a single gunman in U.S. history. Had it not been for the heroic actions of the teachers, school staff and the response force, the number of victims could have been higher," the report said. The report included a series of recommendations, some based on harsh criticism sparked by hours-long delays in notifying families of the deaths of the 20 children and six school staff. |

By 2020, China Could Have Hypersonic Missiles to Sink U.S. Aircraft Carriers Posted: 13 Jan 2018 04:37 AM PST In November, China tested what may become the world's first operational hypersonic weapon. While Chinese progress in this area surprises no one, the first operational deployment of the weapon will add another weapon to China's growing antiaccess toolkit, posing a dilemma for U.S. military planners in the Pacific. Over the past decade China has conducted several tests of potential hypersonic weapons. |

Las Vegas gunman emailed about bump stocks months before rampage: documents Posted: 12 Jan 2018 09:56 PM PST (Reuters) - Three months before killing 58 people and wounding more than 500 in Las Vegas last October, the gunman behind the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history sent emails discussing buying bump stocks, which can make semiautomatic rifles fire hundreds of rounds a minute, media reports on unsealed search warrants showed. Bump stocks believed to be used in the massacre were found in the 32nd-floor hotel room from where Stephen Paddock fired down on a crowd gathered on a Sunday night for the finale of a country music festival held on the Las Vegas Strip. The details suggesting the attack may have planned months in advance were part of more than 300 pages of search warrants unsealed by a federal judge in Nevada on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times, one of several publications that sought release of the documents. |
