CIA: North Korea Only Months Away from Ability to Hit America with Nuclear Weapon Posted: 23 Jan 2018 04:42 PM PST The Central Intelligence Agency assesses that North Korea will have a reliable capability to strike at the continental United States in only a few months. "The way we ought to think about it is reliability," CIA Director Mike Pompeo told an audience at the American Enterprise Institute on Jan. 23. Pompeo notes that there is a world of difference between being able to build a rudimentary capability to build an intercontinental ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead that can possibly hit the United States if everything goes right versus a reliable weapon that will hit the target every time. |

The Tuesday night attack, which struck the city's Salmani neighborhood, also left 47 people wounded, local health official Hani Belras Ali said. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but many assumed it was the work of remnants of an Islamic State group faction largely driven out of Libya. |

Thousands more flee erupting Philippine volcano Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:48 AM PST Tens of thousands more people have fled an erupting volcano in the Philippines, relief workers said Wednesday, as foreign tourists arrived to watch the flaming lava and giant clouds spurting from its crater. More than 70,000 residents are now crammed in schools and other buildings, a figure that has nearly doubled over the past three days, officials said, two weeks after Mayon volcano began showing signs of activity. Volcanologists on Monday warned of a hazardous eruption within days and a no-go zone was extended from six kilometres (3.7 miles) of the crater to nine kilometres, forcing even those beyond it to flee homes being pounded by a rain of ash. |

James Mattis watches Indonesian troops bite heads off snakes and drink their blood Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:00 AM PST James Mattis, the US defence secretary, praised Indonesian troops' "perfect training" as he watched them bite the heads of snakes and drink their blood. In a military demonstration the troops also rolled in glass, broke bricks with their heads, and walked on fire. The ceremony at Indonesia's armed forces headquarters also featured a blindfolded soldier shooting a balloon held between the legs of one of his colleagues. At least one shot missed, although no one appeared injured. To the sounds of beating drums, the Indonesian soldiers performed a series of gripping martial arts techniques, breaking what appeared to be concrete bricks with their heads. They also smashed stacks of burning blocks with their hands. Wearing a hood to blind him, one knife-wielding Indonesian soldier slashed away at a cucumber sticking out of his colleague's mouth, coming just inches from striking his nose with the long blade. A soldier bites the head off a snake Credit: AFP Perhaps the highlight was a demonstration involving live snakes, which Indonesian forces brought out in bags and scattered on the ground, just feet from where Mr Mattis was standing. That included a King Cobra, which widened its neck as it if were going to attack. The soldiers then cut off the snake heads and fed the snake blood to each other, as the crowd looked on. At least one Indonesian soldier bit a snake in half. Mr Mattis appeared to enjoy the demonstration, which came at the end of a three-day visit to Indonesia Credit: AFP Indonesian forces are active in jungle conditions and have to deal with snakes at times. Mr Mattis appeared to enjoy the demonstration, which came at the end of a three-day visit to Indonesia. He said: "The snakes! Did you see them throw them out and then grab them? The way they were whipping them around, a snake gets tired very quickly. "You could imagine how much training went into each individual there, that they were able to do that. When you watch a force do that, many small things, perfectly, you can imagine that they can also put the bigger things together." |

Qatar economy weathers Saudi-led blockade: report Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:52 AM PST Qatar's economy has weathered the impact of a months-long blockade by neighbouring countries, although its tourism and real estate sectors have taken a hit, an economic report said on Wednesday. The tiny Gulf state's economy has maintained positive growth in the seven months since Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed an air and land siege, said the report by Capital Economics. "Recently-released national accounts data confirmed that Qatar avoided the worst fears that the diplomatic crisis would plunge its economy into recession," the independent London-based research firm said. |

Shipwreck discovered in Alabama may be remains of last boat to bring slaves to US Posted: 23 Jan 2018 04:56 PM PST The wreckage of a boat discovered on a riverbank in Alabama is thought to be that of the Clotilda, the last vessel to bring African slaves into the US. The ship wreck, which has not been formally identified, was found when unusually low tides revealed charred wood and rusted metal in a river delta and were spotted by a reporter for Alabama website AL.com. The 86-foot schooner was burned and scuttled after delivering its illegal human cargo at Mobile Bay in Autumn 1859. |

Why 2018 Could Be the Year China and America Clash in the South China Sea Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:31 AM PST The US military may again conduct Freedom of Navigation Operations in the South China Sea this year as part of an ongoing strategic effort to challenge what it describes as China's "excessive maritime claims" in the region, Pentagon officials said. While Pentagon officials naturally did not offer any specifics regarding operations or current considerations about whether US Navy ships will again sail within the 12-mile territorial boundaries of islands claimed by China, they were clear say it is indeed a realistic possibility. |

Kentucky school shooting: 15-year-old gunman kills two classmates and injures 17 others Posted: 23 Jan 2018 03:41 PM PST A 15-year-old student opened fire with a handgun inside a rural Kentucky high school on Tuesday morning, killing two of his classmates, injuring 19 and sending hundreds fleeing for safety. The shooter, who has not been identified, entered a common area at Marshall County High School in Benton shortly before 8 a.m. local time, pulled out a pistol and began firing at students, witnesses told local media. "I see this guy draw from his side and he pulls out a pistol. I didn't even know what was going on. And then it registered. About the time it registered, this guy was sitting here pulling the trigger into all of us," student Bryson Conkwright told TV station WKRN. "I can hear the gunshots. He was shooting in our group," said Conkwright, showing where a bullet grazed his hand. Police were seen leading a teenager away in handcuffs and said the suspect will be charged with murder. It was the nation's first fatal school shooting of 2018. Family members escort their children out of Marshal North Middle School near Palma Credit: AP Students ran for their lives out of Marshall County High School, jumping into cars and running down a highway. "They was running and crying and screaming," said Mitchell Garland, who provided shelter to between 50 and 100 students inside his nearby business. "They was just kids running down the highway. They were trying to get out of there." A half-dozen ambulances and numerous police cars converged on the school, along with officers in black fatigues carrying assault rifles. Senator Mitch McConnell sent staffers and the state's governor, Matt Bevin, rushed to the scene. Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS...Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded...Much yet unknown...Please do not speculate or spread hearsay...Let's let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us...— Governor Matt Bevin (@GovMattBevin) January 23, 2018 Parents left their cars on both sides of an adjacent road, desperately trying to find their teenagers. At Marshall County High, 14 students were hit by gunfire, two of them fatally, officials said. A 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 15-year-old boy died at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center's trauma unit in Nashville, Bevin and hospital officials said. Four of the other gunshot patients brought to Vanderbilt were expected to survive, doctors said. Less severely wounded students were taken to other hospitals. Another five students suffered non-gunshot injuries, Bevin said, bringing the total number of injured to 17. Police did not release his identity, nor did they describe a motive. "This is a wound that is going to take a long time to heal. For some in this community will never fully heal," Mr Bevin said. After the shooting, signs of chaos in the school were abundant, Marshall County Attorney Jeff Edwards told the Louisville Courier-Journal newspaper. "To walk in, the backpacks laying around, the phones laying around, going off … it's indescribable," he was quoted as saying. Five of the wounded were flown about 120 miles (193 kilometers) to Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University Medical Center, spokeswoman Tavia Smith said. Kentucky State Police are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the shooting. A suspect was taken into custody after one person was killed and others wounded Tuesday morning at a rural Kentucky high school Credit: BBC News The attack marked the year's first fatal school shooting, 23 days into 2018, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive. Mr Bevin expressed his shock that a high school shooting could "happen in a small, close-knit community like Marshall County." Marshall County High School is about 30 minutes from Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky, where a 1997 mass shooting killed three and injured five. Parents leave the school with their daughter Credit: AP Michael Carneal, then 14, opened fire there about two years before the fatal attack at Columbine High School in Colorado, ushering in an era when mass school shootings have become much more common. Meanwhile, in the small North Texas town of Italy, a 15-year-old girl was recovering Tuesday after police said she was shot by a 16-year-old classmate in her high school cafeteria on Monday, sending dozens of students scrambling for safety. |
