Elon Musk announces an early February launch plan for Falcon Heavy

Posted: 27 Jan 2018 02:31 PM PST

Elon Musk announces an early February launch plan for Falcon HeavyElon Musk's "week or so" until the Falcon Heavy launch is now looking like it'll be closer to two weeks. The SpaceX founder confirmed on Twitter that he's "aiming" to have a Feb. 6 launch for the private aerospace company's largest rocket to date. It will lift off from the Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy, Musk tweeted. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk apparently wasn't joking about a Boring Company flamethrower — it's here "Easy viewing from the public causeway." Aiming for first flight of Falcon Heavy on Feb 6 from Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy. Easy viewing from the public causeway. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 27, 2018 News of the Falcon Heavy's hoped-for launch date comes days after the rocket's successful test on Wednesday, at Cape Canaveral. At the time, Musk predicted in a follow-up tweet the a proper launch would happen soon. The Falcon Heavy is so-named for its ability to launch larger payloads than SpaceX has been able to previously. It's basically three Falcon 9 rockets — the current SpaceX standard-bearer — strapped together. While the added power means it can move heavier payloads into space and out toward distant destinations, such as Mars, the first Falcon Heavy launch is more symbolic. The rocket will contain nothing more than a red Tesla Roadster — another Musk product — blasting David Bowie's song "Space Oddity" on its radio.  Wednesday's firing test shouldn't be taken as a surefire sign of success for the Falcon Heavy. As Musk said last July, there's a "real good chance that vehicle doesn't make it to orbit." The launch timetable is also far from certain. Musk's Saturday tweet is clear enough about Feb. 6 being the "aim," but any number of factors could delay that plan. Still, this is more concrete confirmation of a launch plan than Musk was willing to share just a few days ago. Assuming nothing changes, we'll all get to see how this Falcon Heavy holds up to the rigors of a full launch in roughly a week and a half. Looming water shortages spell catastrophe for Cape Town

Posted: 26 Jan 2018 12:56 PM PST

Looming water shortages spell catastrophe for Cape TownCape Town faces "catastrophic" consequences as water taps to four million citizens will be turned off within the next 80 days.  Unless the skies defy weather forecasts and rain floods the city's six dams, "Day Zero"  is April 12.  This is when the municipality will shut taps and residents will have to queue to collect water daily at about 150 sites around the already congested city.  Many fear lack of water will spark civil unrest and even more crime, as the economy – which is heavily dependent on tourism – shrinks. Many bookings from overseas visitors have already been cancelled for the end of summer season.  Behind closed doors, some in the city's management are predicting nearly a third of better off residents will lock up their homes and leave ahead of Day Zero.  Jean-Pierre Smith, Cape Town's safety and security member within the mayor's office, said the city is unsure how all citizens will be able to collect water when the taps are turned off. People queue to collect water from a natural spring outlet in the South African Breweries  Credit: AP Photo He said the city will set up collection points, or pods, for people to pick up 6.6 gallons (25 litres) a day.  At present residents are restricted to 50 litres a day.  "We have a lead time of five weeks to get the [water collection] sites going," he said on Friday. "It would be catastrophic if we end up having to collect water at pods. It is going to be really unpleasant and difficult. We must not think that it is a viable solution for long. It is, at best, an emergency solution, and should be avoided at all costs," he said.  "We now have a lead time of five weeks to get the sites going…" In a private briefing for a group of influential residents in one of Cape Town's richer suburbs earlier this week, a senior official said one of the great fears ahead of Day Zero was that lack of water will dry up sewage and clog up most of the city's toilets which could ignite dangerous diseases such as typhoid.  Residents were told that there were already some 'water wars' at springs around Table Mountain and that this would increase when taps run dry. Tourists in the city famously perched near two oceans are being asked to flush the toilet as little as possible and swim in the ocean instead of pools Credit: AP Photo Insiders say they do not expect desalination plants would be up and running in time for Day Zero. Water produced at these plants will not be drinkable as Cape Town's sewage is dumped into the sea. Poor, mainly black residents who live in the city's slums only use four percent of the city's water and will not have their water cut off as many of them do not have piped water into their shacks and already collect from communal taps.  Richer residents have sunk more than 20,000 boreholes which are drying up underground aquifers, some experts say.  Helen Zille, Western Cape premier for the city's ruling Democratic Alliance party, said on Friday: "The crash the city has been trying to avoid now seems inevitable. We are bracing for impact. Sticking to the province's constitutional mandate of support and oversight is not enough in these circumstances." "As we begin the countdown to Day Zero‚ the ground has shifted. While we must still do everything possible to prevent this ghastly eventuality, my focus has shifted to overseeing plans for the day the taps run dry, and the weeks that follow." Cape Town city council has ordered drilling into the aquifer to tap water Credit: RODGER BOSCH/AFP/Getty Images Cape Town's crime rate is extremely high in poor areas dominated by gangs, and there are fears that the drought will increase unrest as people become desperate for water.  There are also concerns about how people will access the water-collection points, as the inner-city train system people will need to use to reach them is paralysed by vandalism and will not be repaired until next year.  Little South African government attention is currently focussed on Cape Town's water crisis.  However, when deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa was asked about it at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, he said he was returning home to "urgently corral as many people as possible... to make sure we bring water to the people of Cape Town."

Hacked Tokyo cryptocurrency exchange to repay owners $425 million

Hacked Tokyo cryptocurrency exchange to repay owners $425 millionTokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck Inc said on Sunday it would return about 46.3 billion yen ($425 million) of the virtual money it lost to hackers two days ago in one of the biggest-ever thefts of digital money. Coincheck said in a statement it would repay the roughly 260,000 owners of NEM coins in Japanese yen, though it was still working on timing and method. The theft underscores security and regulatory concerns about bitcoin and other virtual currencies even as a global boom in them shows little signs of fizzling.
