U.S. airport immigration computers go down temporarily: agency Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:26 AM PST Immigration desk computers at various airports went down for about two hours on Monday, causing long lines for travelers entering the United States after year-end holidays, according to Customs and Border Protection and posts on social media. All airports were back on line after wait times for travelers that were longer than usual, it said. "At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature," the agency said. |

'Life is really difficult': Tehranis share economic grievances Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:35 AM PST The streets of Iran's capital have been relatively quiet as protests hit much of the country, but Tehranis still have plenty to complain about and demand action from the government. My husband is a government worker but his salary is no way enough for us to make ends meet," said Farzaneh Mirzaie, 42, a mother of two. It is a story heard up and down the country as Iran struggles to recover from years of poor economic management and crippling international sanctions. |

California launches legal sale of cannabis for recreational use Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:01 AM PST California will launch the world's largest regulated commercial market for recreational marijuana on Monday, as dozens of newly licensed stores catering to adults who enjoy the drug for its psychoactive effects open for business up and down the state. It becomes the sixth U.S. state, and by far the most populous, venturing beyond legalized medical marijuana to permit the sale of cannabis products of all types to customers at least 21 years old. With California and its 39.5 million residents officially joining the pack, more than one-in-five Americans now live in states where recreational marijuana is legal for purchase, even though cannabis remains classified as an illegal narcotic under U.S. law. |

Iran's Rouhani rejects violence but vows 'space for criticism' Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:08 AM PST Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that government bodies must provide "space for criticism" as he sought to head off days of unrest, but warned protesters that violence was unacceptable. "Criticism is different to violence and destroying public property," he said in a cabinet meeting, according to the state broadcaster. "Government bodies should provide space for legal criticism and protest," Rouhani said in his first public comments since the protests began on Thursday. |

At least 12 people injured in Bronx apartment fire Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:59 AM PST At least 12 people were hurt on Tuesday as a fire tore through an apartment building in the Bronx, just days after another blaze in the New York City borough killed 12 people, a New York City Fire Department spokesman said. The six-alarm fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. local time in a four-story brick structure with a furniture store on the ground floor, Kenneth Reilly told Reuters. More than 200 firefighters were still battling the blaze in frigid temperatures of around 15 degrees Fahrenheit two hours after it started, said Reilly, adding that the cause was yet to be determined. |

Nearly 200 hurt in Philippine New Year revelry despite fireworks order Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:56 PM PST Nearly 200 people were injured during traditionally raucous New Year celebrations in the Philippines despite President Rodrigo Duterte's order limiting the use of firecrackers, the health minister said Monday. The order signed in June restricted the noisy explosives to community fireworks displays in an attempt to curb the bloody merrymaking that leaves scores of Filipinos dead or injured each year. The Philippines is mainly Catholic but the violent New Year festivities draw on ancient superstitions and Chinese traditions, with people firing guns and setting off powerful fireworks in the belief the bangs will drive away bad spirits. |

Is austerity really to blame for Iran protests? Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:08 AM PST Despite demonstrators chanting provocative slogans against Iran's Islamic rulers, analysts say the roots of the current protests lie in the same anger at economic austerity that has roiled many countries. Deadly unrest has broken out across the country after demonstrations began in the second city of Mashhad on Thursday. "It can be an uncomfortable idea for some people to treat Iran the same as other countries," said Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, an analyst and founder of the Europe-Iran Business Forum. |

A visual that shows just how many Rohingya villages have been burned Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:22 PM PST (Reuters) - In the four months since the Myanmar military began a crackdown after Rohingya militants attacked an army base and police posts on Aug. 25, around 655,000 members of the stateless Muslim minority have fled the western state of Rakhine and crossed into neighboring Bangladesh. A Reuters graphic makes use of data from the U.N. Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT) to show hundreds of villages in Rakhine state that were once inhabited by the Rohingya, but have now been burned down. A total of 354 villages have either been completely or partially destroyed, Human Rights Watch said on Dec. 18. |

Death toll from DR Congo violence now 12: protestors Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:41 PM PST The death toll from a crackdown on New Year's Eve protests in Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 12, protestors said on Tuesday. "Eleven people died in Kinshasa and one in Kananga," Jonas Tshombela, a spokesman for the protest organisers, told AFP. Catholic and opposition groups on Sunday defied a ban on demonstrations demanding that President Joseph Kabila leave office. |
Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:48 AM PST Police had responded earlier to a call from inside the house that there had been shots fired, and found that a semi-automatic weapon had been used in the attack. The deaths came on New Year's Eve in Long Branch, a small city on the Jersey Shore, police had said earlier. The police and prosecutors' office had previously confirmed on Twitter that an incident had occurred but that it was believed to be a domestic dispute and posed no danger to residents. |
