‘World’s most dangerous bird’ kills owner after attacking him when he fell over at Florida home

'World's most dangerous bird' kills owner after attacking him when he fell over at Florida homeA 75-year-old man has been killed by the large flightless bird he owned after he fell on his property in Florida.Police found the man badly wounded by a cassowary when they were called to his property, where the victim kept exotic animals, on Friday.Cassowaries are known as the "world's most dangerous bird", according to San Diego Zoo.Alachua County Sheriff Department said the man was probably injured by the bird's 4-inch, dagger-like claws.Police are investigating the incident but say initial information suggests it was a "tragic accident".The victim, named as Marvin Hajos, was taken to hospital by paramedics, where he later died from his injuries. He was reportedly breeding the birds, which are native to Australia and New Guinea."It looks like it was accidental," deputy chief Jeff Taylor told the Gainesville Sun newspaper."My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell. When he fell, he was attacked."Police added that the cassowary involved in the attack "remains secured on private property at this time."A woman who identified herself as the victim's partner told the Gainesville Sun that he had died "doing what he loved" but chose not to make any further statement.Cassowaries are similar to emus and are among the largest bird species in the world, weighing up to 60kg and reaching up to 6ft in height.San Diego Zoo said cassowaries "can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick", due to their long claws. The birds are not traditionally raised in the US but are sought after by collectors. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists the cassowary as Class II wildlife which can "pose a danger to people" and require a permit for ownership.Agencies contributed to this report

Sudan’s Bashir Must Face Justice for His Genocides

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:35 AM PDT

Sudan's Bashir Must Face Justice for His GenocidesSudan's long-time president, Omar al Bashir — among the world's most ruthless rulers — was arrested yesterday in a military coup that followed four months of popular protests in Khartoum, the country's capital. Whatever other charges he will face for terror and corruption, he should be promptly tried for his worst offense: genocide. In 70 years since the adoption of the U.N.'s Genocide Convention, only two genocides have been officially recognized by the U.S. government while they were still occurring. The first was the Bashir regime's genocide in the western Darfur region. In mid 2004, a few months after the Darfur conflict began and a few months before the Bush administration recognized the genocide, the State Department dispatched a team to refugee camps across the border in Chad. The team interviewed survivors from the Muslim Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa tribes, which were targeted for extermination.A preeminent expert in the field, Gregory Stanton, summarized the "shocking" survey results:> Over 60 percent of the people interviewed had witnessed the killing of a family member. Two-thirds had witnessed the killing of a non-family member. Over 80 percent had witnessed destruction of a village. Two-thirds had witnessed aerial bombing of villages by the Sudanese government. And perhaps most chillingly, one-third had heard racial epithets used while they or their relatives were being murdered or raped. Assailants often shouted, "Kill the slaves" and "We have orders to kill all the blacks."The survey's findings convinced the administration to declare the Bashir regime's campaign in Darfur a racially motivated genocide. All told, the State Department estimates that over 300,000 tribesmen have died in in the region, and hundreds of thousands remain displaced today.Despite an arrest warrant for genocide issued against him by the International Criminal Court in 2010, Bashir remained president and protected from prosecution. He continued to receive crucial diplomatic and financial support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, China, and the Arab League, among others. As I wrote 15 years ago in these pages, Darfur should be counted as Bashir's second genocide. He waged the first from the early 1990s to 2002, against the Christians and animists of southern Sudan and the people of the Nuba Mountains. That bloody campaign was undertaken in response to a rebellion against the forcible imposition of sharia law, which violated guarantees of southern autonomy included in the 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement. Though the Nuba are mostly Muslim, they resisted Bashir's call to jihad against the south and were consequently declared "apostates," marked for death along with non-Muslims, in a 1993 government fatwa.Over 2 million eventually perished and 5 million were displaced as a result. Bashir used, as he would again in Darfur, a combination of military and militia tactics, inflicting deliberate mass starvation and sanctioning widespread rape, enslavement, and bombing and strafing of hospitals, schools, and other civilian structures. It ended in 2005 with the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement (SCPA). Its traumatic legacy lives on in the unending conflict and political dysfunction of South Sudan, which became an independent country under the terms of the SCPA.For 30 years, Bashir led a military dictatorship bent on forcibly Islamicizing and Arabizing Sudan's disparate tribes and religious groups. His regime carried out amputations, stonings, and other harsh punishments for such offenses as women wearing pants instead of skirts, the consumption of alcohol, adultery, homosexuality, and apostasy and blasphemy against Islam.Bashir's millions of surviving victims yearn for justice, but it is unlikely to come from the usual international bodies. The ICC, currently preoccupied with trying to prosecute American vets of Afghanistan and Iraq, is too politicized to be entrusted with adjudicating the most egregious of all human-rights violations. And U.N.-backed hybrid tribunals have been infamously slow and expensive.Bashir should instead be tried for genocide by a Sudanese court. Secretary Pompeo should honor the Bush administration's genocide designation by helping Khartoum identify Sudanese jurists and witnesses, many of whom are now in exile, and by providing expert legal counsel and encouragement. It's the best chance the world stands of forcing this monster to answer for his crimes.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mentioned 3,181 times on Fox in six weeks: ‘We have an AOC segment every single day’

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mentioned 3,181 times on Fox in six weeks: 'We have an AOC segment every single day'Fox Media channels have mentioned freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez every day for about six weeks, as reported by media watchdog group Media Matters. Fox, headed by Rupert Murdoch, is best known for providing right-leaning news and political talk shows, like Justice Jeanine and Hannity. The New York representative was mentioned at least 3,181 times on the network between February 25 and April 7.President Trump is known to frequently watch Fox during his 'executive time'. Ocasio-Cortez, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, took to Twitter to respond. "Fox News brought me up 3,000+ times in *6 weeks.* That's how hard they're fighting against dignified healthcare, wages, & justice for all; and turning their firepower on the youngest Congresswoman in history to do it. Too bad for them, cause we don't flinch. ForThePeople."Ocasio-Cortez is referring to her championship of what Fox sees as radical liberal causes, like the fight for a liveable minimum wage, Medicare for all, and free college. Media Matters says that "Hosts and guests smear and misrepresent Ocasio-Cortez's agenda, caricaturing it while painting it as dangerous, far-left socialism". The watchdog notes how Fox has repeatedly invalidated Ocasio-Cortez due to her age, calling her a little girl, yet claim she's taken over the democratic party. Fox has also claimed she's pushing her "Latin American values" on the United States, despite the fact that Ocasio-Cortez is Puerto Rican and from the Bronx. Puerto Rico is an American territory.Media Matters notes that host Stuart Varney acknowledged, "We have an AOC segment every single day, almost every single hour. She's good for our ratings"

Yemeni bodegas boycott New York Post over attacks on Ilhan Omar

Yemeni bodegas boycott New York Post over attacks on Ilhan OmarMurdoch-owned paper published front page that Yemeni American Merchants Association says 'provoked hatred' The groups says attacks on Ilhan Omar are making Muslim Americans less safe. Photograph: Jim Bourg/Reuters A group of New York corner-store owners has announced a boycott on the sale of the New York Post, arguing that the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper's attacks on congresswoman Ilhan Omar are making Muslim Americans less safe. On Thursday, the Post published a front page featuring an image of the World Trade Center towers in flames on 11 September 2001 and a quote suggesting that Omar, a Somali American congresswoman from Minnesota who wears a hijab, had minimized the seriousness of the terror attacks in a speech last month. In an open letter in response, the Yemeni American Merchants Association wrote that the front page "provoked hatred" and "aims to harm Omar and her family and other people of the Islamic faith". The group said it was calling on "all Yemeni American bodega and deli owners" as well as "our community and allies across New York City" to boycott the sale and purchase of the Post. This is ugly pic.twitter.com/R2XVyS4dq8— Harry Siegel (@harrysiegel) April 11, 2019 The association represents Yemeni Americans who own and run an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 of New York City's thousands of delis and corner stores, which are known as "bodegas". Such stores are integral to the daily life of most New Yorkers, a crucial source of late-night snacks, morning coffee and newspapers and magazines. Repeated criticism of Omar by the Post, the Murdoch-owned Fox News, Republican politicians and Donald Trump has been condemned by progressive Democrats, including presidential contenders who called the attacks "dangerous" and said they risked "inciting violence". Last week, a Trump supporter from New York state was arrested and charged after making a death threat against Omar. On Friday, Trump tweeted a video featuring part of Omar's remarks to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, cut with footage from 9/11. He retweeted the message on Saturday. The Post published a brief story criticising the New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her defense of Omar. In its letter, the Yemeni American Merchants Association said the New York Post was "undermin[ing] national unity and [enticing] violence and hate". It added: "This rhetoric threatens the safety and wellbeing of Omar, Muslim leaders, and the larger Muslim American community at a time when Islamophobia is at an all-time high." Ayyad Algabyali, the group's director of advocacy, told the Guardian: "It's not the first time that the New York Post basically spreads hate and fear in their newspapers." Selling the New York Post might bring merchants "a little profit", he added, but it also means "you are committing to sell violence and hate in the community, and that's totally unacceptable". There was "no end date" to the boycott, he said, adding: "This might be for good." Algabyali said news of the boycott had gone viral on Twitter, and that the group hoped other merchant associations might join in solidarity. The group had already received support from some Uber and Lyft drivers, he said, who were helping spread news about the boycott from one bodega to another. This is not the Yemeni American Merchants Association's first major political action. It was formed two years ago, in the wake of a a Yemeni bodega strike protesting Trump's travel ban against several Muslim-majority countries.

Kim Jong-un gives Donald Trump until end of year to change attitude to North Korea nuclear talks

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:25 PM PDT

Kim Jong-un gives Donald Trump until end of year to change attitude to North Korea nuclear talksKim Jong-un said the US must change its attitude to talks by the end of this year if there was to be a third summit with Donald Trump. The North Korean leader made the comments during a speech on Friday at a session of North Korea's rubber-stamp parliament, which made a slew of personnel changes that bolstered his diplomatic lineup amid deadlocked negotiations with the United States. His speech came hours after Mr Trump and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in Washington and agreed on the importance of nuclear talks with North Korea. "We of course place importance on resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations. But US-style dialogue of unilaterally pushing its demands doesn't fit us, and we have no interest in it," Kim said during the speech. According to the Korean Central News Agency, he blamed the collapse of his summit with Trump in February on what he described as unilateral demands by the United States, which he said raised questions over whether Washington has genuine willingness to improve relations. But Kim said his personal relationship with the American president remains good and that they could exchange letters at "any time." Kim repeated earlier claims that North Korea's crippled economy would persevere through heavy international sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons programme and that he wouldn't "obsess over summitry with the United States out of thirst for sanctions relief." The United States has said the summit in Vietnam broke down because of the North's excessive demands for sanctions relief in return for limited disarmament measures. In their first summit last June in Singapore, Mr Trump and Kim issued a vague statement calling for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing when and how it would occur. Kim said the United States has been refusing to withdraw what the North perceives as "hostile policies" while sticking to "mistaken judgment that we would succumb to maximum pressure." He said the North would not compromise on the "fundamental interests of our country and people, even by a speck," and blamed the United States for arriving in Hanoi with "completely unrealisable plans." "If the United States approaches us with the right manner and offers to hold a third North Korea-U.S. leaders' summit on the condition of finding solutions we could mutually accept, then we do have a willingness to give it one more try," he added. "We will wait with patience until the end of the year for the United States to come up with a courageous decision. But it will clearly be difficult for a good opportunity like last time to come up." Kim Jong-un poses in a photo with newly-elected members of the leadership bodies of the state at the headquarters building of the Party Central Committee in Pyongyang Credit: AFP Kim also during the speech made a nationalistic call for South Korea to support the North's positions more strongly and criticised Seoul for acting like an "overstepping mediator" between Washington and Pyongyang. Kim held three summits last year with Moon, who lobbied hard to revive the nuclear talks between the United States and North Korea. Following collapse of the Trump-Kim summit, the North had been urging the South to break away from Washington and proceed with inter-Korean economic projects that are currently held back by U.S.-led sanctions against the North. "The South should not act as an 'overstepping mediator' or a 'facilitator' and should rather get its mind straight as a member of the (Korean) nation and boldly speak up for the interest of the nation," Kim said. When asked about Kim's comments, South Korea's presidential office said Seoul is committed toward keeping the atmosphere of dialogue alive and helping negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang resume at an early date.

SpaceX boss Elon Musk revealed on Twitter that both halves of the spacecraft's nosecone were also picked up, and they're going to send them back into space sooner rather than later.SpaceX's entire business model revolves around being able to reuse extremely expensive hardware. Landing a rocket booster back on the ground so it can be refurbished is one thing, but recovering other parts of the spacecraft, such as the nosecone fairing, helps to boost SpaceX's bottom line even more.https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1116514068393680896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1116514068393680896&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fboygeniusreport.wordpress.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D5705656%26action%3DeditUnfortunately, the fairing halves have proven difficult to recover. The nosecone halves don't have great aerodynamics, and SpaceX has been testing various ways of recovering them for many months. The company has tried catching them, but getting its net-equipped ship into the right position has frustrated their efforts. For the Falcon Heavy, SpaceX didn't catch the fairings but did recover them promptly from the ocean. Seawater isn't the best for rocket components, but the company is confident it can refurbish the fairings after they've been dunked in the ocean. Musk says SpaceX plans on reusing the fairings during the launch of its own Starlink satellite mission later this year. This would be the first time SpaceX has ever reused nosecone fairings it recovered from the ocean, and the company hasn't said a lot about the process(es) it plans to use to give the fairings a second lease on life. We'll see whether things pan out later this year, but SpaceX has been on a winning streak lately and there's little reason to think that will change.
