Why can't Twitter stop Trump's hateful tweets about Ilhan Omar?

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:24 AM PDT

Why can't Twitter stop Trump's hateful tweets about Ilhan Omar?Congresswoman received death threats following video Trump posted – but he didn't technically violate the rules The rules just aren't the same for Donald Trump as they are for the rest of us. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey apparently admitted as much this week on a phone call with Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar.As reported by the Washington Post, Dorsey, often criticized for his inaction when it comes removing hateful and threatening content from the platform, was asked by Omar why he hadn't taken down a video posted by Trump earlier in the month. The video, which spliced together misleading and out of context comments from Omar about the issue of Islamophobia with footage of the 9/11 attacks, was clearly targeted harassment to anyone who saw it.Indeed Omar said she saw a sharp uptick in death threats after it was posted. But since it came from Trump, and not an average Twitter user, there was nothing Dorsey could do, he said. The tweet didn't technically violate the rules in any case, he added. (Anyone who has used Twitter will understand the frustration at trying to parse what exactly those rules are.)The call with Omar came the same day Dorsey met with Trump in the White House, a meeting in which the president is said to have largely complained about his follower count."During their conversation, [Dorsey] emphasized that death threats, incitement to violence and hateful conduct are not allowed on Twitter," the social media platform said in a statement to the Post. "We've significantly invested in technology to proactively surface this type of content and will continue to focus on reducing the burden on the individual being targeted."Dorsey has said in the past that the public interest value of Trump's tweets outweigh the harm of his occasional calls for violence or threats against foreign governments or members of the media"Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate," the company explained in statement last year. "It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions."More recently Dorsey declined to say whether a hypothetical direct call from Trump to murder a journalist would be grounds for his banishment. The permissive double standard applied to Trump on Twitter hasn't stopped him from regularly suggesting that he is himself being treated unfairly. This week Trump tweeted that Twitter doesn't "treat me well as a Republican. Very discriminatory…" In fact it seems more probable that Republicans such as Trump are given much more leeway than others. A recent story from Motherboard reported that one of the reasons Twitter has had trouble removing white supremacist content from the platform, as they have largely done with the Islamic State, is that the algorithms they use might end up affecting Republican politicians."When you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything," Trump once said in a prescient boast. When it comes to his behavior as reported in the Mueller report, as well as his social media habits, it seems like Trump behaves like he can get away with anything. So far he's right.

Fighter Fight: Russia's Su-35 vs. America's F-15, F-16 or F-35 (Who Dies?)

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 04:00 PM PDT

Fighter Fight: Russia's Su-35 vs. America's F-15, F-16 or F-35 (Who Dies?)As history shows us, many times in war you do not always get to chose from the most optimal of solutions.Russia's Su-35 fighter certainly has western defense outlets buzzing--and for good reason.Moscow, despite heavy sanctions and an economy that has certainly seen better days, keeps pumping out new combat systems one after another--items like new tanks, submarines, nuclear weapons platforms and more. While many were indeed designed and planned for ahead of the imposition of sanctions, Russia is clearly making a big effort to modernize its armed forces, especially its air force, and moving past older Soviet platforms. The Su-35 is a good example of such efforts. So how would the Su-35 do against America's best planes? How would it fare against an American air force that is clearly the best in the world.  How would, for example, the Su-35 do in a combat situation against Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter? How would Russia's new plane do against older aircraft like the F-15 or say F-16?Such scenarios matter--and not just in the context of a possible NATO/Russia or Middle East situation, but now that Russia is set to deliver the Su-35 to China, such comparisons matter even more. There are many places where all of these lethal aircraft will overlap, making such comparisons even more timely.Compiled below are three articles, written several years ago by TNI's former Defense Editor, Dave Majumdar, that looks at these questions in depth, combined in one posting for your reading pleasure. With that said, let the debate begin. This first appeared in September 2016.

Rosenstein Calls Out Obama Admin For Failing to ‘Publicize’ Russian Election Interference

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 05:38 AM PDT

Rosenstein Calls Out Obama Admin For Failing to 'Publicize' Russian Election InterferenceDuring a private speech Thursday evening, deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein lamented the Obama administration's decision not to "publicize" Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.Rosenstein, who oversaw special counsel Robert Mueller's recently-concluded investigation into Russian election interference, suggested that the Obama administration did the public a disservice by not publicly revealing "the full story" of the Kremlin's attempt to disrupt the election while adequate counter-measures could have been taken."Some critical decisions about the Russia investigation were made before I got there. The previous Administration chose not to publicize the full story about Russian computer hackers and social media trolls, and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America," Rosenstein said during an address to the Public Servants Dinner of the Armenian Bar Association.Rosenstein went on to criticize former FBI director James Comey for his decision to reveal the existence of a counterintelligence investigation into Russian election interference at the height of the 2016 campaign."The FBI disclosed classified evidence about the investigation to ranking legislators and their staffers. Someone selectively leaked details to the news media. The FBI Director announced at a congressional hearing that there was a counterintelligence investigation that might result in criminal charges," he continued. "Then the former FBI Director alleged that the President pressured him to close the investigation, and the President denied that the conversation occurred."Obama administration officials elected not to publicize the extent of the Kremlin's interference efforts because they believed they would be seen to be tilting the scales toward Hillary Clinton by exposing Russia's preference for Trump, NBC News reported in December 2016. Their confidence in Clinton's victory also bolstered their belief that alarming the public about election interference would prove unnecessary.

Bernie Sanders First to Sign Pledge to Rally Behind Democratic Nominee

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 12:32 PM PDT

Bernie Sanders First to Sign Pledge to Rally Behind Democratic NomineeLoren ElliottNational progressive outfit Indivisible on Thursday launched a pledge compelling all 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to rally behind the eventual nominee. Bernie Sanders was the first to sign it, the group revealed. The "We Are Indivisible" pledge asks for three commitments from him and any other prospective signers, as first reported by BuzzFeed News. First, Indivisible's pledge requests that candidates "make the primary constructive" by outlining their visions while respecting their opponents. "I'll support the ultimate Democratic nominee, whoever it is—period," the pledge also reads. "No Monday morning quarterbacking. No third-party threats. Immediately after there's a nominee, I'll endorse." And the group also wants a commitment that every candidate will "do the work to beat Trump," including a promise that "As soon as there is a nominee,  I will put myself at the disposal of the campaign.""We believe in rigorous and spirited primaries, and we also know that once we have a nominee, our entire focus must turn to defeating Trump. The 'We Are Indivisible' Pledge commits all of us to a debate of ideas followed by dedicated work to make our ideas reality," said Indivisible's co-executive directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin. "This pledge is about beating Donald Trump and the anti-democratic, xenophobic right wing. And it's about the ideas and vision we need for a post-Trump future."Sanders has consistently pledged to run a positive campaign and to support any eventual nominee, even referring to some of the competitors in the race as friends. Even on Thursday, Sanders referred to the former Vice President Joe Biden—the latest and perhaps most formidable candidate to enter the race—as a friend with whom he has many disagreements. However, Sanders has never been shy about criticizing more establishment-aligned elements of the Democratic Party. He recently sent a scathing letter to liberal think tank Center for American Progress criticizing its corporate contributions and content that was overtly critical of him for his wealth.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? UPDATE 1-Morgan Stanley sees US Q2 GDP growth at 1.1%, Goldman view 2.2%Morgan Stanley's economists said on Friday they expect that U.S. economic growth is running at a 1.1% annual pace in the second quarter due to a reversal of the surge in exports and inventories recorded in the first quarter. Goldman Sachs analysts marked down their estimate on U.S. gross domestic product in the current quarter, but the pace was still twice as fast as Morgan Stanley's projection. "Our preliminary expectations for growth in the second quarter sees large drags from net exports and inventories after their contributions in 1Q," Morgan Stanley economists wrote in a research note.

South Carolina state House passes 'heartbeat' bill to ban abortions after six weeks

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 01:58 PM PDT

South Carolina state House passes 'heartbeat' bill to ban abortions after six weeksThe South Carolina state House passed a bill which prohibits abortion when a heartbeat is detectable. Current law in South Carolina permits abortion up to 20 weeks. This bill, called the "South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat Protection from Abortion Act" reduces that to a mere six weeks, before many women know that they are pregnant, with exceptions for rape, incest, and if the pregnancy endangers the life or health of the woman. This bill is not the first of its kind, heartbeat abortion bills are becoming more popular in states like Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Georgia, Oklahoma, and now, South Carolina where the bill passed along party lines.Despite their increasing popularity, heartbeat bills are hard to enforce due to questions on the constitutionality of abortion restrictions beyond those outlined in Roe V. Wade. Anti-choice bills similar to this one have been introduced in the South Carolina state legislature previously, but died before making it to the floor.Despite this bill passing in one chamber of the state legislature, as the 2019 legislative session is ending, it is unlikely the state Senate will have the opportunity to take it up for a vote.Republican governor Henry McMaster has pledged to sign the heartbeat abortion bill into law if it crosses his desk."What is making its way through suits me fine- it's pro-life. This is a pro-life state and I will be glad to sign that bill," Mr McMaster said.South Carolina Democrat David Mack, who serves as a state representative, said. "This waste of time is sickening to me."Mack continues, "We go through this every year and the bottom line is, it's a woman's body and it's her right to choose."

Now Is Not the Time to Get Rid of the A-10 Warthog (And Replace It with the F-35)

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 01:07 PM PDT

Now Is Not the Time to Get Rid of the A-10 Warthog (And Replace It with the F-35)I admit it, as a former infantryman, I'm a partial to the A-10 Thunderbolt II. I don't mind that it's ugly. I don't mind that it entered service all the way back in the mid 1970s, making it older than me. I don't mind that it's slow, basically a flying 30 mm cannon sheathed in a 1,200-pound titanium "bathtub." In fact, these are exactly the things that endear the A-10 to grunts like me. It's our plane. It was made for us and us alone. The Warthog was, is, and will be for the foreseeable future the premier close-ground support plane. And all the things that I mentioned above — its simplicity and weight — are what make it so effective at its job. The titanium armor encasing the plane makes it impervious to high-explosive and armor-piercing projectiles up to 23 mm. It can even take a few hits from 57 mm rounds. Parts of the cockpit interior is covered with a nylon spall to protect the pilot from fragmentation. In other words, this is a plane meant to fly low and slow, mix it up in close quarters with ground targets that can return fire, and get its hands a little bit dirty. The A-10 is notorious for being able to take damage and keep flying. It's battle tested and soldier approved.(This article by Scott Beauchamp originally appeared at Task & Purpose. Huawei hopes for Britain-like solution in New Zealand 5G bidChina's Huawei Technologies said Britain's decision to allow the firm a restricted role in building parts of its next-generation telecoms network was the kind of solution it was hoping for in New Zealand, where it has been blocked from 5G plans. Britain will ban Huawei from all core parts of 5G network but give it some access to non-core parts, sources have told Reuters, as it seeks a middle way in a bitter U.S.-China dispute stemming from American allegations that Huawei's equipment could be used by Beijing for espionage. Washington has also urged its allies to ban Huawei from building 5G networks, even as the Chinese company, the world's top producer of telecoms equipment, has repeatedly said the spying concerns are unfounded.

Apple recalls UK wall plug adapters over electric shock fears

Apple recalls UK wall plug adapters over electric shock fearsApple has recalled its UK plug adapters after warning there's a risk of some causing electric shocks. The tech giant said that "in rare cases" its AC wall plugs sold between 2003 and 2010 can break open. It warned this could leave people at risk of getting a shock if they then touched the exposed metal components. The Telegraph understands Apple instituted the recall after being made aware of six incidents with the adapters worldwide. The two-part adapters, which were also sold in Hong Kong and Singapore, were shipped with Apple's Mac desktop and laptops, some iPhones, iPods and iPads, as well as in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit. In a blog published yesterday, the company said: "Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange affected wall plug adapters with a new adapter, free of charge. "We encourage customers to exchange their wall plug adapter using the process below." The recalled adapters are white three-prong wall plugs with a slot on the back where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. The recalled two-part adapter, which was sold between 2003 and 2010 Credit: Apple Owners of such adapters can exchange them at Apple Stores or authorized Apple service providers but will need to bring the serial number of the device it was sold with. The latest recall comes after the company recalled two-prong adapters over similar electrocution fears in 2016. Although that recall did not affect adapters widely sold in the UK it covered plugs sold over a 12 year period in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Brazil. At the time, Apple initiated the recall after it said it had been made was aware of 12 incidents relating to them. In 2014, Apple also offered to replace some adapters for the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S in Europe after they were found to overheat.

Biden Says He Asked Obama Not to Endorse Him

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 10:05 AM PDT

Biden Says He Asked Obama Not to Endorse HimAs he threw his hat into the ring for the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday, former vice president Joe Biden was asked whether President Barack Obama, his former running mate, would endorse his candidacy."I asked President Obama not to endorse and he doesn't want to," Biden explained to reporters in Delaware. "Whoever wins this nomination should win this on their own merits."Nevertheless, Obama issued a glowing statement in the wake of Biden's campaign launch."President Obama has long said that selecting Joe Biden as his running mate in 2008 was one of the best decisions he ever made," said Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill. "He relied on the vice president's knowledge, insight, and judgment throughout both campaigns and the entire presidency. The two forged a special bond over the last ten years and remain close today."Of course, the former vice president has a much less cozy relationship with President Trump, whom he attacked by name in his announcement video."If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation, who we are. And I cannot stand by and watch that happen," Biden said. "The core values of this nation, our standing in the world, our very democracy, everything that has made America America's at stake."Biden enters the race as the leader in most national polls, but he will have to contend with an increasingly emboldened progressive wing of the Democratic party that has been quick to brand him as too moderate. Earlier this month, he dismissed such concerns about the direction of the party and his appeal to Democratic voters."The fact of the matter is, the vast majority of the members of the Democratic party are still basically liberal to moderate Democrats in the traditional sense," he said. "Show me the really left-, left-, left-wingers who beat a Republican. So the idea that the Democratic party has kind of stood on its head, I don't get."

Musk would have to adhere to Tesla rules regarding potentially significant comments by executives, and have tweets or other social media posts pre-approved by "an experienced securities lawyer employed by the company," according to the proposed settlement.
