Waco Biker Gang Shootout: DA Drops All Remaining Charges

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:32 PM PDT

Waco Biker Gang Shootout: DA Drops All Remaining ChargesHandout/ReutersNearly four years after nine men died and another 20 were injured in a brutal melée at a Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas, the local district attorney announced Tuesday that he will dismiss the remaining 24 cases involved in the shooting—effectively closing the criminal matter that began on May 17, 2015.On that hot and bloody Sunday, a gun battle broke out between members of the Bandidos and Cossacks motorcycle clubs at a quiet outdoor shopping mall. In the aftermath of the shootout, officials said they found more than 300 weapons in the kitchen areas, between sacks of flour and in bags of tortilla chips, inside vehicles, and even down the toilets of the restaurant, which has since shuttered. Outside, blood pooled and bodies were draped between hundreds of motorcycles as men and women were lined up to be handcuffed.More than 200 people were shuttled on city buses to the city's convention center to be detained, most were transferred to the McLennan County Jail where 177 were held on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity in lieu of $1 million bonds. Motorcyclists and others were heavily critical of the mass arrests.A grand jury chose to indict 155 of those people, but only one man, Bandidos Dallas County chapter president Jacob Carrizal, was tried by former District Attorney Abel Reyna. That case ended in a mistrial in November 2017, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald. Carrizal's case is among those that are to be dismissed, the Tribune-Herald reports.McLennan County District Attorney Barry Johnson, who won against Reyna in the most recent election, was heavily critical of the former district attorney in his press statement. Johnson reportedly took over the case in January when he assumed office. "Following the indictments, the prior district attorney had the time and opportunity to review and assess the admissible evidence to determine the full range of charges that could be brought against each individual who participated in the Twin Peaks brawl, and to charge only those offenses where the admissible evidence would support a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt," Johnson said in a press statement. "In my opinion, had this action been taken in a timely manner, it would have, and should have, resulted in numerous convictions and prison sentences against many of those who participated in the Twin Peaks brawl," he continued. "Over the next three years the prior district attorney failed to take that action, for reasons that I do not know to this day," Johnson added.Clint Broden, who represented five criminal defendants involved in the case, said in a statement on Tuesday: "We are, of course, pleased with the actions of the new District Attorney Barry Johnson and applaud him for his efforts.  On the other hand, the fact that this case is going on four years is a true miscarriage of justice. Many lives of those falsely accused were irreparably damaged by former District Attorney Abel Reyna not to mention the victims and their families who were denied justice from those actually responsible.""In the end, my clients are certainly relieved but the anger from the false arrests will never go away," he added.Dallas attorney Don Tittle, who represents about 120 of the bikers in their civil lawsuits, told the Tribune-Herald's Tommy Witherspoon that "things would have gone differently" if "law enforcement had stuck with the original plan to focus on individuals who might have been involved in the violence and let the rest of the motorcyclists go after being interviewed."He added, "It's hard to imagine that turning the operation into a dragnet wasn't a major distraction for the investigation, not to mention a public that grew increasingly skeptical as this thing played out. All this for an ill-advised attempt to prove an imaginary conspiracy theory, which to this day there's not a shred of evidence to support."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? SDF says Syria's Raqqa hit by mine blast, not suicide attack

SDF says Syria's Raqqa hit by mine blast, not suicide attackA blast in Syria's Raqqa on Wednesday that wounded people was caused by an unexploded mine left by Islamic State going off, not by suicide attacks, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said. The head of the SDF's media office Mustafa Bali told journalists in an online message that earlier information it provided about suicide bombings in the city, captured from IS in 2017, was wrong. A string of bombings have in recent months targeted the northeastern corner of Syria held by the SDF, even after its capture of the last Islamic State enclave in the area.

Ethiopian 737 pilots followed Boeing guidelines before crash: WSJ

Ethiopian 737 pilots followed Boeing guidelines before crash: WSJThe pilots of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX plane that crashed last month initially took the emergency steps outlined by the manufacturer but still could not regain control, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The airliner went down soon after taking off on March 10, killing 157 people in the second deadly crash of a 737 MAX aircraft in less than five months, forcing a worldwide grounding of the model. The first -- a Lion Air crash in Indonesia that killed 189 people in October -- led to Boeing issuing a bulletin reminding operators of emergency guidelines to override a specially developed anti-stall system on MAX planes.

Smollett Conspiracy Theories Target George Soros

Smollett Conspiracy Theories Target George SorosNuccio DiNuzzo/GettyThis story originally appeared in Right Richter, a newsletter by Will Sommer. Subscribe now to see what's happening in right-wing media from the safety of your inbox.A couple dozen protesters gathered in Chicago yesterday to demonstrate against the decision to drop charges against former Empire actor Jussie Smollett for his alleged hate crime hoax. But amid the signs criticizing Smollett and prosecutor Kim Foxx, there was one surprising name that drew protesters' ire: billionaire Democratic financier George Soros. Soros has nothing to do with the charges being dropped against Smollett, nor any other discernible connection to the actor. But that hasn't stopped the rumor that Soros and other top Democrats are pulling the strings in the Chicago prosecutor's office over Smollett from circulating widely on the right. In Soros's case, the Smollett "connection" comes in the form of $408,000 Soros gave to support Foxx's election campaign in 2016. Those donations came nearly three years before the Smollett "MAGA Country" incident, but that hasn't stopped various hoaxers on the right from suggesting that Soros paid off Foxx to let Smollett go or is otherwise involved. MAGA personality Jack Murphy falsely tweeted that Soros gave Foxx $408,000 "in return for all charges being dropped," a claim that garnered more than 7,000 retweets.  InfoWars claimed that Soros and Barack Obama were "behind" the decision to drop charges."Where is the media covering this connection?" tweeted Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk. Soros and Obama aren't the only prominent Democrats who have been tenuously pulled into the Smollett saga. A viral graphic passed around on social media claims, wrongly, that Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) is dating Smollett's sister. Meanwhile, columnist Michelle Malkin is blaming the Obamas because they are from Chicago. "How did hate crime huckster Jussie Smollett get away with it?" Malkin wrote in her widely syndicated columnist last week. "All crooked roads in Chicago lead back to the Obamas."The rumors and hoaxes have had the effect of making the Smollett case the kind of lingering mystery that can be "investigated" on the right forever. On Fox News, Laura Ingraham has already promised her audience that she'll investigate whether Soros intervened to save Smollett. Want this in your inbox? Ethiopian crew followed procedure but unable to control jet: inquiry

Ethiopian crew followed procedure but unable to control jet: inquiryThe crew of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed last month, killing 157 people, repeatedly followed procedures recommended by Boeing, but were unable to regain control of the jet, the investigators' report showed Thursday. The initial probe appears to confirm concerns about the flight control system on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 model, with data echoing that from the crash of the Indonesian Lion Air 737 MAX 8 flight in October last year which killed 189 people. The full report has not been publicly released, but according to a draft copy seen by AFP, shortly after take-off a sensor recording the level of the plane began transmitting faulty data, prompting the autopilot system to point the nose downwards.

This gorgeous iPhone 11 concept is probably much more exciting than the real thing

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:26 AM PDT

This gorgeous iPhone 11 concept is probably much more exciting than the real thingThis is going to be a very interesting year in the smartphone industry. Android phone makers typically take cues from Apple and follow the company's every move. Just look at all the shameless Android-powered iPhone X copycats that hit the market after Apple released the phone in 2017. In 2019, however, the smartphone landscape looks nothing like it did in late 2017 and throughout most of 2018. Instead, Android vendors have moved on to even better all-screen smartphone designs while Apple continues to use the same notched screen design it introduced on the iPhone X. And if you're an Apple fan, we have some more bad news: It looks like things are going to get worse before they get any better.According to reports from multiple sources including the most accurate Apple insider out there, the iPhone 11 series that launches later this year will sport a design that's almost identical to the iPhone X and iPhone XS. That's right, Apple apparently plans to use the same phone design three years in a row, just like it did with the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7. This year's iPhone 11 is expected to look just like last year's iPhone XS and 2017's iPhone X from the front, and the back will be the same apart from frosted glass instead of clear glass and a new camera array. Those minor design changes aren't exactly exciting, so one graphic designer decided to play with what we've seen so far and create an iPhone 11 concept that looks much better than what we've seen so far in leaks. For those who need a refresher, here's what we're expecting from the iPhone 11 when Apple unveils it this coming September:In a word, meh.Graphic designer Hasan Kaymak apparently finds the prospect of an iPhone 11 that looks the same as the iPhone X and iPhone XS other than a bulbous camera bump to be just as boring as we do. In an effort to spice things up, he decided to riff on it a bit. He created a series of renders that imagine what the iPhone 11 might look like if it used the same camera design, but also mixed in some retro flavor design trends from 2019.The result is a sleek iPhone 11 that has flat metal edges like the iPhone 5 and iPhone SE that everyone loves, but also a hole-punch display similar to the Galaxy S10. The resulting design isn't perfect, but it's certainly better than using the same design for a third consecutive year.First, we don't like the centrally located hole-punch cameras at all -- the hole looks much better in a corner. On top of that, Kaymak's design doesn't leave room for any of the other sensors that the TrueDepth camera system needs in order to function. Face ID isn't going anywhere, and the tech needed to hide the sensors under the screen isn't yet ready for mass production. As a result, this iPhone 11 concept design is completely unfeasible. The modernized iPhone SE look is fantastic though, and we definitely prefer it to Apple's current rounded edges. Maybe someday Apple will go back to basics and build an iPhone like this, but sadly it won't be in 2019.A video featuring Kaymak's design is embedded below.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YCK4ZZYips

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido stripped of parliamentary immunity

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:36 AM PDT

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido stripped of parliamentary immunityThe Venezuelan government has stripped president Nicolas Maduro's rival Juan Guaido of his parliamentary immunity, opening the door for his possible arrest and prosecution. Mr Guaido, head of the opposition-controlled national assembly, declared himself president on January 23 and has been recognised as Venezuela's legitimate leader by more than 50 countries. Until now, Mr Maduro has given Mr Guaido a remarkably free rein, unwilling to risk antagonising supporters of the 35 year old – including the United States and neighbouring Colombia and Brazil. On Tuesday, however, the constituent assembly – a pro-Maduro rival parliament to the national assembly – voted unanimously to strip Mr Guaido of his immunity, on the recommendation of the chief justice of the Supreme Court.   Mr Maduro's allies argued that Mr Guaido should be prosecuted for violating an order banning him leaving the country while under investigation by the attorney general. He is also accused of inciting violence through street protests, and of receiving illicit funds from abroad. Venezuela's foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza, on a visit to drum up support for Mr Maduro in Beirut and then Syria, warned on Wednesday that Mr Guaido was in breach of the constitution and the judiciary had to "take care" of it. Mr Guaido, however, brushed off the threat. "The regime believes that by attacking me, they will stop us," he told supporters outside his house on Tuesday night. "There's no way back in this process." He said that he knows he now runs the risk of being "kidnapped" by Mr Maduro's allies. His chief of staff, Roberto Marrero, was snatched from his home at 2am on March 21, and is being held on terrorism charges. Mr Maduro has so far stopped short of detaining Mr Guaido himself, but the youthful politician said he knew it was a possibility. "We are aware of that," he said. "But we will not change our path." Juan Guaido's wife Fabiana Rosales, at the White House on March 27 The Trump administration has threatened the Maduro government with a strong response if Mr Guaido is harmed, and Florida Senator Marco Rubio - who has Mr Trump's ear on Venezuela policy - said nations should take any attempt by Mr Maduro's government to "abduct" him as a coup. "And anyone who cooperates with this should be treated as a coup plotter and dealt with accordingly," said Mr Rubio. However, Diosdado Cabello, the head of the constituent assembly and one of the most powerful men in Venezuela, accused the opposition of naively inviting a foreign invasion and of inciting a civil war. "They don't care about the deaths," said Mr Cabello. "They don't have the slightest idea what the consequences of war are for a country." Geoff Ramsey, a Venezuela researcher at the Washington Office on Latin America, said the Maduro government may be assessing its strength within the global community. "This seems like an attempt to test the waters, weighing how the international community would react to detaining Guaido," he said. "The government is reasserting its authority while also sending a clear signal to the opposition: we are in control."

Three importers cut Iran oil shipments to zero: U.S. envoyThe United States reimposed sanctions on Iran after President Donald Trump last May withdrew the country from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and several world powers, accusing it of supporting terrorism and conflicts in Syria and Yemen. While the United States has set a goal of completely halting Iran's oil exports, it granted temporary import waivers to China, India, Greece, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, Turkey and South Korea to ensure low oil prices and no disruption to the global oil market. The Trump administration is currently in consultations with the importers ahead of a May 2 deadline when the waivers expire.

Boeing’s Starliner is officially delayed, again

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:04 PM PDT

Boeing's Starliner is officially delayed, againIt hasn't been a great year thus far for Boeing. The company has been dealing with a whole bunch of its commercial planes being grounded due to a pair of crashes that claimed hundreds of lives, and its contract with NASA to deliver a crewed spacecraft has resulted in nothing but cost overruns and massive delays. Now, after several weeks of whispers, NASA has officially announced the delay of the Boeing Starliner. The Starliner, which along with SpaceX's Crew Dragon was supposed to be NASA's ticket to sending astronauts into space without paying for help from Russia, has had a long and bumpy development. In order to have any hope of salvaging the work done and money already spent on Starliner, NASA was essentially forced to extend its agreement with Boeing or come up empty-handed."NASA and Boeing have agreed to extend the duration of the company's first crewed flight test to the International Space Station after completing an in-depth technical assessment of the CST-100 Starliner systems," NASA says in a statement. "NASA found the long-duration flight to be technically feasible and in the best interest of the agency's needs to ensure continued access and better utilization of the orbiting laboratory."As upbeat as this might sound, it's a terrible admission of failure on the part of Boeing, which has made a habit of coming up short in its Starliner milestones. NASA wants the Starliner to work, and it needs reliable transportation for its astronauts for trips to and from the International Space Station, but it will now be forced to wait even longer and shell out even more cash for the program.Meanwhile, SpaceX, which also failed to meet deadlines with its Crew Dragon capsule but has already completed an uncrewed test flight to the ISS, is now clearly ahead of its competitor. It was just last year that many analysts assumed that Boeing would handily beat Elon Musk's team in delivering a spacecraft to NASA, but things have shifted dramatically in the months since. At present, Boeing's Starliner isn't scheduled for an uncrewed test flight until late summer or fall of this year, and squeezing in a launch with crew on board before the end of 2019 seems like a big stretch.
