Prosecutor In Foxx’s Office Slams Her Handling of Smollett Case: ‘An International Laughingstock’

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:47 AM PDT

Prosecutor In Foxx's Office Slams Her Handling of Smollett Case: 'An International Laughingstock'An anonymous attorney in the Cook County prosecutor's office lambasted state attorney Kim Foxx over her handling of the high profile Jussie Smollett case, and the tendency of her and her allies to resort to accusations of racism when criticized, in an a letter provided to CWB Chicago on Monday.Foxx's office dropped all charges against Smollett last month after he was indicted by a grand jury for allegedly staging a bigoted and politically-motivated hate crime against himself with the help of two friends who were paid for their services. Citing his record of community service and the technically victimless nature of his alleged crime, Foxx's office dropped all charges without requiring that Smollett admit guilt. After briefly reviewing the history of racial discrimination in Chicago, the unnamed assistant state's attorney attacked Foxx and her allies for casting criticism of the decision as racist. The letter reads:> Fast forward to 2019 Chicago. The State's Attorney's Office (SAO) is an international laughingstock, as politicians, comedians, scholars, legal pundits and regular ol' citizens alike blast its handling of the case against Jussie Smollett. The criticism is pointed squarely at Kim Foxx, the first African American female elected to fill the prestigious role of Cook County State's Attorney.> In the wake of said criticism, Ms. Foxx speaks at a Rainbow PUSH coalition meeting and states she cannot run an office "driven by anger and public sentiment." She says "the goal posts change" when an African-American takes the position of head prosecutor, seemingly calling the critique of the SAO's handling of the Smollett case racially-based and derogatory toward her people. He later adds: And blaming Jussie Smollett fallout on race? That is just ignorant and self-serving. It is a complete bastardization of a bona fide movement against acts of racism, which, as a society we should obviously not tolerate. Much like Jussie Smollett's acts bastardized a bona fide movement against hate crimes.  The unnamed prosecutor goes on to accuse Foxx of insulting the Chicago police by dropping all charges without consulting them just weeks after their superintendent, Eddie Johnson, made an impassioned speech about the harm Smollett did to the community by staging a hate crime.> When you demean law enforcement like that you not only strip them of their dignity, you also contribute to the violence in the city. Because young African-American boys and girls who hear the head prosecutor, Jesse Jackson, Bobby Rush, Al Sharpton, et al call police racist, act accordingly," the letter reads. No prosecutors or police officers, and I mean none, thought that the just result would be for Jussie Smollett to go to prison. He was charged with a Class 4 felony. The anticipated outcome was a reduced sentence, a misdemeanor with some community service or restitution. This would have been done on the record, on a regularly scheduled court date, with the Chicago Police being notified, since they are the "victim" in a disorderly conduct of this nature. This case was handled markedly different from any other case at 26th Street. No one knows why, and more importantly, no one can explain why our boss, the head prosecutor of all of Cook County, has decided to so demean and debase both our hard work, and our already tenuous relationship with the Chicago Police Department.Just to be clear - this is not an attack on Ms. Foxx's race, it is an attack on her ethics and her efficacy as State's Attorney.

SNL Gives Joe Biden Sensitivity Training: ‘Let’s Hug It Out, America!’

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:02 PM PDT

SNL Gives Joe Biden Sensitivity Training: 'Let's Hug It Out, America!'Saturday Night Live gave Donald Trump a break this week and instead put Joe Biden through the ringer. Jason Sudeikis busted back onto the show in a cold open sketch that found the former vice president undergoing sensitivity training following a week in which he was repeatedly accused of inappropriate behavior with women over the years and awkwardly tried to dismiss those allegations with a series of jokes. "You guys know that I'm a tactile politician, right?" Sudeikis' Biden asked his campaign staffers. "I'm a hugger, I'm a kisser, and I'm a little bit of a sniffer. The last thing I ever want to do is offend anyone." With that in mind, they brought in a consultant played by Kate McKinnon to school him on how to behave, and Biden immediately started nuzzling her head and rubbing her arms. "Yeah, so this is exactly the kind of thing I'm here to prevent." "Wait, I think nose to nose is going to be OK," Biden replied. "Because look, I did the 23andme thing, like Lizzie, what's her name, Warren, right? It turns out that I'm 1-percent Eskimo, so I'm allowed to do the kissing." When she told him he shouldn't be hugging or kissing any women he meets, he protested. "That's a human connection. That's my whole thing," he said. "That's like telling Mario Batali to take his Crocs off." Later, they presented some female voters so Biden could practice and when he was told one was looking for someone who could beat Donald Trump, he asked, "You mean the guy who actually bragged about assault on tape?""Yes, but unlike his voters, your voters actually care," his staffer replied. Ultimately, Biden admitted he didn't really learn anything from the experience. "But the important thing, I think, is that I'm listening, I hear you, I feel you," Biden said. "So let's hug it out, America, what do you say? Biden and some woman in 2020, right? We can do this!" Read more at The Daily Beast.

Erdogan's party to demand total recount of Istanbul ballots

Erdogan's party to demand total recount of Istanbul ballotsTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party said Sunday it had asked for a recount of all ballots cast in Istanbul, the country's economic capital, during last week's mayoral election after an opposition candidate claimed a slender win. The vice-president of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Ali Ihsan Yavuz made the demand for a recount going beyond one already under way. The AKP won most votes nationwide in last Sunday's election, but results showed the ruling party lost Ankara and was also narrowly defeated in Istanbul in what would be one of their worst setbacks in a decade and a half in power.

The Chicago Sun Times reported on the incident and its aftermath at the hospital. The boy's grandmother confirmed to reporters that he was taken in for surgery that night. The mass shooting wasn't the only gun violence impacting children in Chicago this weekend.A 13-year-old was seriously inured also on Saturday night at 8:20 pm local time when shots were fired at a car the boy was sitting in. He suffered an injury in the hip, police said, and was also transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilised.Only one of the victims in the mass shooting was reportedly in critical condition as of Sunday, a 29-year-old woman who was shot in her chest and shoulder and rushed to Christ Medical Centre. Police said witnesses declined to cooperate after the shooting. The Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pakistan says it has intelligence of new Indian attack this monthShah Mahmood Qureshi's comments came after tensions over a February standoff between the arch enemies had appeared to ease. "India rejects the irresponsible and preposterous statement by the foreign minister of Pakistan with a clear objective of whipping up war hysteria in the region," a spokesman for India's foreign office said in a statement. "This public gimmick appears to be a call to Pakistan-based terrorists to undertake a terror attack in India." The foreign office said India reserved the right to respond firmly and decisively to any cross border militant attack, accusing Pakistan of being complicit in such attacks on India.

Apple rumored to launch two new OLED iPhone models with triple-lens cameras in 2019

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:15 AM PDT

Apple rumored to launch two new OLED iPhone models with triple-lens cameras in 2019We're still months out from the official reveal of Apple's next iPhone lineup, but most of the early rumors and reports have indicated that we will see three direct successors to the XS, XS Max and XR in 2019. There will be more than a few new features, and the standard bump in specifications, but we're not expecting any major design changes or new models. At least, we weren't, until Macotakara released a surprising report on Monday morning.According to the Japanese technology blog, Apple has five new iPhone models planned for 2019. In addition to the updated XS, XS Max, and XR models, reliable supply chain sources claim that Apple is working on two other OLED iPhone models built specifically to accommodate the triple-lens rear camera. The first OLED model is said to have a 6.1-inch display and be 0.15mm thicker than the iPhone XS, but the camera bump will be reduced by 0.05mm. The second model, which features a 6.5-inch display, will be 0.40mm thicker than the iPhone XS Max, but, similarly, the camera bump will see an 0.25mm reduction.Macotakara says that both of these models are expected to ship with USB-C to Lightning cables with an 18W charger, as well as support for reverse wireless charging, which will give the upcoming iPhones the ability to charge the latest AirPods with Wireless Charging Case and other Qi-compatible devices.Considering just how drastically this report diverts from the reports we've seen about the 2019 iPhone lineup so far, it's worth taking everything here with a grain of salt. That said, Macotakara has been a fairly reliable source of iPhone leaks over the years, so we'll be on the lookout for more reports to back these assertions up.

Fighting flares in battle for Tripoli despite UN appeal for ceasefire in Libya

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 11:06 AM PDT

Fighting flares in battle for Tripoli despite UN appeal for ceasefire in LibyaFighting has flared in southern Tripoli as General Khalifa Haftar's self-styled Libyan National  Army (LNA) intensified its assault on the capital despite a United Nations appeal for a cease fire.  The United Nations mission to Libya (Unsmil) called for an "urgent" two hour truce to allow the evacuation of civilians and wounded from Tripoli's southern suburbs on Sunday, where troops loyal to the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) were battling to halt the LNA assault on the city.  But the violence saw no sign of abating, with Gen Haftar's forces launching at least one airstrike on a Tripoli suburb, and witnesses reported hearing grad rockets firing to the south of the city.  The airstrike was the LNA's first use of air power in the battle. It came after pro-government forces launched air-raids on Saturday.  Militiamen from the western city of Misrata head into Tripoli to reinforce the UN-backed government  Credit: STRINGER/EPA-EFE/REX Clashes were concentrated on the mainly farmland area of Wadi Raba and the disused international airport, 15 miles south of the capital. Haftar's forces claimed to have seized the airport on Saturday.  Colonel Mohamed Gnounou, a spokesman for pro-government forces, on Sunday said a counter offensive had been launched to push Haftar's troops back.  He said operation "Volcano of Anger" was aimed at "purging all Libyan cities of aggressor and illegitimate forces", in reference to Haftar fighters. Pro-GNA forces have been reinforced by powerful militia groups from the western city of Misrata, Zintan, and Zawiya. At least one armed group from Misrata known as Brigade 166 arrived Saturday in eastern Tripoli, according to AFP.  The health ministry in Tripoli said at least 21 people were killed and 27 wounded in the fighting. The United States, which maintains a small contingent in the country to protect diplomatic facilities and help local forces fight al-Qaeda, said it was withdrawing some of its troops for security reasons.  A handout photo made available by Libyan Army Media office on 05 April 2019 shows Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres (R) shaking hands with commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar (L) in Benghazi, eastern Libya  Credit: LIBYAN ARMY MEDIA OFFICE HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/REX "The security realities on the ground in Libya are growing increasingly complex and unpredictable," said Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, the head of U.S. Africa Command. "Even with an adjustment of the force, we will continue to remain agile in support of existing U.S. strategy." Libya has been divided between various armed groups since the Nato-backed uprising that overthrew Muammar Gadaffi in 2011.  The main centres of power are the Tripoli-based GNA, and a rival administration allied to Gen Haftar in the east of the country. Gen Haftar has portrayed himself as a bulwark against militant Islamists and has received military backing from Egypt, France, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates. He is also endorsed by a Saudi Arabia-based Salafist cleric and recently met Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman in Riyadh.     Critics say he wants to be a Gaddafi-style dictator, and his assault on Tripoli is widely seen as a bid to change facts on the ground ahead of a UN-sponsored national reconciliation conference later this month.  The move has drawn international condemnation and analysts say it is not yet clear his forces are capable of defeating the alliance of groups defending Tripoli.

Intel scoffs at report that its 5G modems won’t be ready for Apple’s 2020 iPhone lineup

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 05:17 PM PDT

Intel scoffs at report that its 5G modems won't be ready for Apple's 2020 iPhone lineupThe 5G revolution is slowly getting off the ground but Apple will be sitting on the sidelines for the time being. As is to be expected, and similar to its previous strategy with respect to 4G a few years back, Apple is planning to wait for broader nationwide coverage before joining the 5G party. So while 2019 will see any number of 5G enabled devices from Android hit the market, iPhone users will have to wait a bit. The only question, though, is how long that wait is going to be.Despite the widespread assumption that 5G enabled iPhones will hit store shelves in 2020, recent investor notes from analysts have raised the possibility that Intel -- Apple's chief 5G modem supplier -- will not be able to produce modems at the scale Apple needs. Meanwhile, Apple isn't liable to strike up a deal with Qualcomm given that the two companies are still battling it out over royalty payment issues in jurisdictions across the globe. As to Intel's alleged ongoing technical challenges, a Fast Company report from a few days back relayed the following:> The chip giant was to be the sole provider of the 5G modems in the 2020 iPhones, too, but it has been missing deadlines for the development of the chip, the XMM 8160 5G modem, a source with knowledge of the situation says.> > In order to deliver big numbers of those modems in time for a September 2020 iPhone launch, Intel needs to deliver sample parts to Apple by early summer of this year, and then deliver a finished modem design in early 2020.Not to despair, Intel was quick to squash any rumors that its 5G modem production might not be up to snuff. And though the company naturally didn't reference Apple by name, it's no secret what company it's referencing when discussing delivering 5G modems to partners. In a statement provided to Fast Company, an Intel spokesperson said the following: "As we said in November 2018, Intel plans to support customer device launches in 2020 with its XMM 8160 5G multimode modem."Of course, it goes without saying that missing the 5G boat in 2020 would represent a huge strategic blow for Apple. The good news, though, is that all of the rumors we've seen regarding an alleged 2021 launch window for 5G iPhones have come from analysts with far from perfect records with respect to Apple rumors.

Obama warns progressives to avoid 'circular firing squad' as Democrats prepare for 2020 showdown

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:57 PM PDT

Obama warns progressives to avoid 'circular firing squad' as Democrats prepare for 2020 showdownBarack Obama has urged progressives in the US to avoid becoming part of a "circular firing squad" that takes aim at people who do not share all their views. In what will be interpreted as a comment about the nature of the rivalry between different factions within the Democratic Party, the former president stressed the need for compromise."The way we structure democracy requires you to take into account people who don't agree with you," he said at an event in Berlin hosted by the Obama Foundation. "And that, by definition, means you're not going to get 100 per cent of what you want."According to The Hill, he added: "One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States….is a certain kind of rigidity where we say, 'Uh, I'm sorry, this is how it's going to be', and then we start sometimes creating what's called a "circular firing squad", where you start shooting at your allies because one of them has strayed from purity on the issues. "And when that happens, typically the overall effort and movement weakens."The 2016 Democratic presidential primary was marked by often bitter hostility between the camps of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Supporters of the Vermont senator considered her a Wall Street sell-out, while many of those backing the former secretary of state believed Mr Sanders was out of touch and campaigned for unrealistic policies. As Democrats prepare to select a challenger to Donald Trump for 2020 – congressman Tim Ryan announced on Saturday he was joining the already crowded field – different factions are already becoming clear. Progressives such as Elizabeth Warren and Mr Sanders support policies such as Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.Others, such as Beto O'Rourke and Cory Booker have adopted a more centrist position. With perhaps as many as 20 Democratic candidates running in 2020, there is already a energetic fight underway for supporters and donations, something that will intensify as the contest progresses. At the same time, Mr Obama said it was important for candidates to know what they stood for. "You should take some time to think in your own mind and continually refine and reflect, 'What are my core principles'," he said. "Because the danger is if you don't know what your principles are, that's when you compromise your principles away."He added: "You can't set up a system in which you don't compromise on anything, but you also can't operate in a system where you compromise on everything."

Russian officials agree to free 'whale jail' animalsRussian officials said Monday they will work towards freeing all orca and beluga whales from a notorious facility in the east of the country, after a visit by US-based marine mammal advocates. Nearly 100 whales captured for sale to aquariums have been kept in small pens for months in what the media has nicknamed a "whale jail" in the Russian Far East, as the campaign to release them gathered strength and went global. Kremlin-backed Far Eastern governor Oleg Kozhemyako on Monday announced that he has "made a decision to free the animals into the wild," after meeting noted environmentalists and campaigners Jean-Michel Cousteau and Charles Vinick who visited the facility last week.

Wall Street rally stalls on Boeing slide, earnings jittersShares of Boeing Co slid 4.1%, pulling down Dow industrials and the S&P industrials sector, after the company said it would cut production of its 737 MAX aircraft by nearly 20%. The sector, which weighed the most on the S&P 500, was also pressured by General Electric Co's 7.09% fall after J.P.Morgan downgraded the conglomerate's shares to "underweight". The recent run of gains in U.S. stocks has taken the S&P 500 within striking distance of its record closing high hit in September, lifted by the Federal Reserve's decision to hold off on interest rate hikes in 2019 and on hopes of a trade deal with China.
