Netanyahu's annexation pledge condemned by election challenger

Netanyahu's annexation pledge condemned by election challengerThe main challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's elections on Sunday condemned the premier's deeply controversial pledge to annex West Bank settlements, calling it an "irresponsible" bid for votes. Netanyahu said late Saturday he planned to apply sovereignty over at least parts of the occupied West Bank, a move that could prove the death knell for the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Benny Gantz, the former military chief whose centrist Blue and White alliance has posed a stiff challenge to Netanyahu, condemned the premier's remarks in an interview with Israeli news site Ynet.

Ilhan Omar: New York man charged with threatening to kill Muslim congresswoman

Ilhan Omar: New York man charged with threatening to kill Muslim congresswomanA man has been charged with threatening to kill one of the first Muslim women to serve in the US Congress. Patrick Carlineo Jr was arrested after placing a call to Ilhan Omar's office in which he allegedly called the Democrat a "terrorist" before threatening to shoot her, federal prosecutors said. The FBI said that the 55-year-old sounded angry during the call to the Washington DC office of the of Minnesota representative, but he "spelled his name correctly and provided contact information" to a staffer.Mr Carlineo later told bureau investigators that he "loves the president and that he hates radical Muslims in our government," according to the criminal complaint filed by US Attorney's Office in the Western District of New York.Ms Omar became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress at last year's midterms, joining the House of Representatives in January.During the call the 55-year-old allegedly said: "Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she's a (expletive) terrorist? I'll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull."The 21 March call was initially reported to the US Capitol Police, who began an investigation in coordination with the FBI.The prosecutor's office said Mr Carlineo had been arrested and charged by criminal complaint with threatening to assault and murder a US official. He is being held pending a detention hearing on 10 April. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. Mr Carlineo's defence attorney declined to comment on the charges. Ms Omar was met with a backlash for remarks she made earlier this year on Israel, including comments that US supporters of Israel are pushing people to have "allegiance to a foreign country".Both leading Republicans and members of her own Democratic party criticised Ms Omar's comments as antisemitic. She later apologised, saying "antisemitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of antisemitic tropes".Additional reporting by Associated Press

One of Europe's Largest Airlines Is Changing Gates for ErdoganThe move -- a 45-hour sprint slated to end at midnight on Saturday -- is a massive undertaking, involving transporting more than 1,000 tons of equipment every hour from the 1950s-era Ataturk hub to the giant new airport, which occupies an area larger than Manhattan. The transfer by Europe's fifth-largest airline was delayed several times in recent months because of the complexity of starting a facility designed to eventually handle 200 million passengers a year -- roughly triple Ataturk's current traffic. Turkish Airlines plans to wind down services at its old base, with the last flight departing for Singapore at 2 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Timmothy Pitzen: Ex-convict charged with pretending to be long-missing boy

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 07:49 AM PDT

Timmothy Pitzen: Ex-convict charged with pretending to be long-missing boyA former convict accused of pulling a cruel hoax by pretending pretended to be a missing boy from Illinois has been charged with making false statements.Brian Rini, 23, had claimed he was 14-year-old Timmothy Pitzen, who went missing in 2011 after his mother killed herself when he was six-years-old. He said he had escaped from an eight-year ordeal at the hands of sex traffickers. But Mr Rini's claims were debunked earlier this week after DNA tests confirmed he was not the long-lost boy.The FBI said Mr Rini had made false claims twice before, also portraying himself as a juvenile sex-trafficking victim."Law enforcement confronted him with the DNA results, and at that point the person immediately stated that he was not Timmothy Pitzen, and of course law enforcement knew by virtue of the DNA analysis that he was in fact Brian Rini," said US attorney Benjamin Glassman. The charge should send a message about the damage such false claims can do, he said, adding: "It's not okay to do it because of the harm that it causes, the pain, for the family of that missing child."After confessing he was not Mr Pitzen, Mr Rini told federal agents he had heard about the missing boy's case on the ABC television program 20/20 and wanted to get away from his own family, according to court documents."When questioned further, Rini stated that he wished he had a father like Timmothy's because if he went missing, his father would just keep drinking," FBI agent Mary Braun wrote. Mr Rini is being held without bail until his detention hearing on Tuesday after a brief appearance in federal court. He faces up to eight years in prison if found guilty, Mr Glassman said.Mr Pitzen's case has stumped authorities since May 2011. The boy was last seen with his mother, who pulled him out of school and took him on a trip to a zoo and a water park, then took her own life in a motel room, leaving behind a cryptic note about her son's whereabouts."Tim is somewhere safe with people who love him and will care for him," she wrote in the note. "You will never find him."

The stalemate will make it harder for May to argue at a summit next week that she needs only a short extension to Britain's EU membership to get a Brexit deal approved at home. May has failed to get the accord she negotiated with EU leaders ratified by a divided Parliament and so has turned to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for help.

Fight begins over Trump's taxes, lawyer slams Democrats' request

Fight begins over Trump's taxes, lawyer slams Democrats' requestIn a statement that mapped out the legal battlefield ahead, William Consovoy said the request, formally filed on Wednesday by U.S. House of Representatives tax committee Chairman Richard Neal, flouts "constitutional constraints." "The requests for his private tax information are not consistent with governing law, do not advance any proper legislative purpose, and threaten to interfere with the ordinary conduct of audits," Consovoy said. One of the many investigations targeting Trump on Capitol Hill and in the U.S. court system, the House Democrat's probe into the president's tax returns could pull back the curtain on his business empire and his reputation as a savvy dealmaker. Unlike previous presidents over recent decades, Trump has refused to make public past tax returns, while retaining ownership in many enterprises, ranging from golf courses and hotels to Trump Tower in New York City and his Mar-a-Lago private club in Florida.

NASA’s asteroid probe shot Bennu with a laser, and this is the result

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:37 PM PDT

NASA's asteroid probe shot Bennu with a laser, and this is the resultNASA's OSIRIS-REx mission has been steadily progressing since the spacecraft arrived at the diamond-shaped space rock known as Bennu a few months back, but not everything has gone completely to plan. The rock ended up being far more, well, dirty than NASA originally expected. Bennu's surface is absolutely packed with debris, posing a challenge for NASA's team that still has to decide where to have the probe touch down on the asteroid to collect samples. Now, using a laser instrument built into OSIRIS-REx, NASA has a detailed look at how dangerous the surface truly is.In a new blog post, NASA explains how it used a tool called the OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) to scan much of Bennu's surface. The instrument paints a 3D picture of the hard surfaces the laser bounces off of, giving NASA researchers a detailed glimpse at the asteroid's rocky surface.Choosing a location for the probe to touch down could ultimately determine whether the mission's most dangerous maneuver -- a brief touchdown and sample collection -- succeeds or fails. Touching down in an area with too much debris could be catastrophic for the probe, resulting in damage to the spacecraft itself and potentially compromising one of its major objectives. The three-dimensional laser model of the asteroid gives NASA's team a bit more information on what parts of the asteroid appear safer than others. Avoiding large boulders is obviously key, but with so few seemingly "clean" spaces on Bennu it'll still be a challenge to decide where best to collect a sample.NASA still has plenty of time to make that decision, however, with the probe scheduled to remain in orbit around Bennu for the duration of 2019 before attempting its most risky move. In the meantime we'll be learning more and more about the oddly-shaped asteroid as OSIRIS-REx continues to relay data back to Earth.

UK's May says greater risk of no Brexit the longer it takes to find compromise

UK's May says greater risk of no Brexit the longer it takes to find compromiseMay has so far failed to secure backing for her negotiated agreement with Brussels as some Conservative lawmakers and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which props up her minority government, have voted it down. "The fact is that on Brexit there are areas where the two main parties agree: we both want to end free movement, we both want to leave with a good deal, and we both want to protect jobs," May said in comments released by her Downing Street office. "That is the basis for a compromise that can win a majority in Parliament and winning that majority is the only way to deliver Brexit." "The longer this takes, the greater the risk of the UK never leaving at all," she said.  May has a plan to enshrine in law a customs arrangement with the EU to win over the Labour Party, and her aides have discussed offering the opposition a place in the British delegation to Wednesday's EU summit, The Sunday Times newspaper reported.

Man Charged in Timmothy Pitzen Hoax Learned About Missing Boy From ‘20/20’ Episode: Feds

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 10:27 AM PDT

Man Charged in Timmothy Pitzen Hoax Learned About Missing Boy From '20/20' Episode: FedsPolice HandoutThe 23-year-old Ohio man who claimed to be Timmothy Pitzen, an Illinois boy who went missing in 2011, has been charged with lying to federal agents, authorities announced Friday.Brian Rini was arrested Thursday night after DNA evidence revealed he was not the missing 14-year-old. Prosecutors said Friday that Rini wanted to "get away from his family" and was inspired to pose as Pitzen, who was last seen in May 2011, after watching a rerun of a 20/20 episode on the case."He needs to be punished for this," Rini's brother, Jonathon Rini, told The Daily Beast on Friday. "He has been doing stuff like this, stupid stuff, for as long as I can remember and I just hope he finally gets the help he needs. But he deserves to go to prison for this."The real Timmothy Pitzen went missing nearly eight years ago after his mother, Amy Fryer-Pitzen, picked him up at his elementary school for a road trip. Fryer-Pitzen was found dead by suicide days later, with a note saying her son was with people who "would care for him and love him." "You will never find him," the note added."On behalf of the United States, I want to offer my condolences to the family of Timmothy Pitzen," U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman said in a Friday press conference announcing the charges. "I can only imagine the kind of pain that they have been through and that this episode has caused for them."Prosecutors allege that on Wednesday, police responded to a call that Rini was "wandering the street, looking confused and in need of assistance." He repeatedly told investigators that he was Pitzen and just "wanted to go home," authorities said. After correctly providing Pitzen's birth date—though incorrectly spelling his name—Rini gave the feds detailed information about how he had been abducted, suffered physical and sexual abuse, and escaped from a hotel room nearby."Rini allegedly claimed he had recently escaped from a hotel room in which two men had been holding him captive," the affidavit states, adding that Rini claimed he had been "sexually and physically abused for years while in captivity and that he was having abdominal pain." The 23-year-old also said he was the victim of child trafficking.  On Friday, FBI special agent Herb Stapleton said investigators first became skeptical of Rini's claims when he refused to provide fingerprints while getting treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He did eventually provide a swab that the Hamilton County Coroner's Office tested, allowing them to quickly determine he was not Pitzen."I think there were suspicions relatively quickly," Stapleton said, adding that the priority was to "ensure that under any circumstances a victim is getting the care they need."When confronted with the preliminary DNA test results, Rini allegedly confessed that he'd lied."Further investigation by the FBI found that Rini had allegedly portrayed himself as a juvenile sex trafficking victim on two prior occasions. In those instances, he was only identified once he was fingerprinted,'' the affidavit states.Braun revealed on Friday that Rini admitted to concocting the Pitzen story after watching a rerun episode about the missing boy on 20/20. He allegedly told authorities he wanted a father like James Pitzen. "We confirmed that there was such a 20/20 episode, and in fact, a rerun had aired several weeks ago," Glassman said.If convicted, Rini could face up to eight years in federal prison, according to authorities. He is currently being held at Hamilton County jail without bond and is expected to appear at a detention hearing on Tuesday."It is not OK to make false claims to law enforcement in matters like this," Glassman said. "It is not OK because it causes pain to the missing child's family." According to court documents, Rini was released from an Ohio jail on March 7 after he was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for trashing a $400,000 model home during a "tattoo party" with a bunch of friends. As part of his release from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Rini was ordered to serve three years of probation, which requires him to obtain a travel permit before leaving the state. "He was receiving treatment last year, but then he stopped," his brother said. "Then he got into more trouble but we never expected he could do this."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? The biggest thing Apple needs to improve for the iPhone 11 to keep pace with Android

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 06:01 AM PDT

The biggest thing Apple needs to improve for the iPhone 11 to keep pace with AndroidNo matter how you try to spin it, there's no getting around the fact that iPhone sales have been stagnant over the past few years. Despite some respectable upgrades over the past few years -- the introduction of Face ID and a brand new form factor with the iPhone X being two prime examples -- the simple reality is that consumers are holding onto their devices for longer. Suffice it to say, the 2-year upgrade cycle that helped transform Apple into the most profitable company on the planet is now nothing but a memory. Looking ahead, there is reason to believe that a monster refresh cycle -- which analysts have been anticipating for the last two years -- may be right around the corner. Most notably, the advent of 5G may prove to be just what Apple needs to inject a little bit of life into the iPhone line. Unfortunately, though, Apple will not be adopting 5G until 2020 at the absolute earliest. A recent analyst report even floated the idea that 5G iPhones may not see the light of day until 2021. So where does that leave Apple in the interim? Are iPhone sales doomed to take another dip in 2019? Not necessarily. One area where it'd be great to see a tremendous improvement in iPhone functionality involves the iPhone camera. While the camera on Apple's iPhone XS is best-in-class across certain categories, there's one category in particular where Apple needs to play a little bit of catch-up with its Android counterparts; low-light photography. If Apple wants the iPhone 11 release to make a huge splash and reinvigorate sales, a vast improvement in low-light photos is certainly one way to go. Now there's no disputing that the iPhone XS takes absolutely stunning photos in ideal lighting conditions, but there's also no denying that its low-light capabilities simply can't keep up with the Google Pixel 3 and the recently unveiled P30 Pro from Huawei. Originally introduced last year, Night Sight mode on Pixel devices is incredible and actually engenders excitement amongst new buyers. With Apple set to unveil its 2019 iPhone lineup in just about 5 months now, we can only hope that Apple will be able to match what Google managed to do with respect to low-light photography. And because a picture is worth a thousand words, Jeremy Burge a few weeks back posted some damning photos comparing low-light photos taken with a current iPhone and a 18 month old Google Pixel 2. The results speak for themselves. https://twitter.com/jeremyburge/status/1083689392722583553 https://twitter.com/jeremyburge/status/1084382858691706881 https://twitter.com/jeremyburge/status/1084386063861329920 https://twitter.com/jeremyburge/status/1085529309047967752 As impressive as that is, the P30 Pro takes things to an entirely new level. The quality of low-light photos taken with the P30 Pro borders on modern-day magic and even puts Google's Night Mode to shame. The following photo comparison is simply jaw-dropping. All that said, we should see some considerable camera improvements with Apple's iPhone 11 lineup later this year. Rumor has it that Apple's flagship -- the iPhone 11 Max -- will include a triple-lens camera scheme. Meanwhile, the entry-level iPhone 11 will reportedly include a dual-lens camera scheme a'la the iPhone X and XS models. That's all well and good, but if Apple wants consumers to truly get exited about its forthcoming iPhone models, it can't go wrong with improved low-light photography. Most consumers simply fall to sleep when you start talking about optical zoom and triple-lens cameras. But one thing that every smartphone user can immediately comprehend and appreciate is a gorgeous photo taken in less than stellar lighting conditions. Google and Huawei have recently set new bars for mobile photography. Hopefully, with the iPhone 11 release looming overhead, Apple will return the favor sooner rather than later.

May Makes Fresh Appeal as Lawmaker Warns of Brexit PurgatoryA long but flexible extension to the Brexit process proposed by the European Union was denounced as "like purgatory" by a leading U.K. lawmaker, as Prime Minister Theresa May appealed to both the public and politicians in search of support for a compromise departure plan. The government needs to move forward with leaving the trading bloc as soon as possible, the Conservative Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss told BBC radio on Sunday. The AKP won most votes nationwide in last Sunday's election, but results showed the ruling party lost Ankara and was also narrowly defeated in Istanbul in what would be one of their worst setbacks in a decade and a half in power. Electoral authorities are conducting a recount in scores of districts in Ankara and in Istanbul where tallies showed the opposition CHP candidate Ekrem Imamoglu with a very slim lead over the AKP.
