Mike Pompeo threatens 'strongest sanctions in history' and vows to 'crush' Iranian proxies

Posted: 21 May 2018 07:01 AM PDT

Mike Pompeo threatens 'strongest sanctions in history' and vows to 'crush' Iranian proxiesMike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, threatened Iran with the "strongest sanctions in history" and vowed to "crush" the regime's proxies around the world. Mr Pompeo also called for a new nuclear treaty with Iran to replace the Obama-era deal that Donald Trump withdrew from earlier this month. But the top US diplomat issued a list of  12 requirements for such a deal, many of which Iran would be unlikely to agree to. He said the US would apply "unprecedented financial pressure" on Iran and send teams of specialists to allies around the world to explain US policy. Mr Pompeo said if Iran makes "major changes" the US was willing to lift all sanctions. Iran deal was a 'loser' Delivering his first major foreign policy speech since taking the job, Mr Pompeo doubled down on the United States' decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month.  He framed the 2015 deal as allowing Iran to increase its malign influence across the Middle East on the back of funding from renewed trade with the West. Mr Pompeo accused the Iranian regime of "playing with house money that has become blood money". And he told the regime: "Understand your current activities will be met with steely resolve". He added: "The Obama administration made a bet.  That bet was a loser with massive repercussions. Mike Pompeo speaking in Washington Credit: Reuters "The bet was a bad one for the US, for Europe, and for the world. Iran's leaders saw it as a starting gun for the march across the Middle East." He added: "We will track down Iranian operatives and their proxies around the world and we will crush them." America 'open' to a new deal Mr Pompeo called for a new treaty with Iran, ratified by Congress, that ends enrichment and gives inspectors access . He said Iran must "stop enrichment" of uranium, which was allowed within strict limitations under the 2015 deal. Iran must also allow nuclear inspectors "unqualified access to all sites throughout the country". The Iranians must also declare all previous efforts to build a nuclear weapon, he said. Mr Pompeo also demanded that Iran must end support for Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, withdraw all forces from Syria, halt support for Hezbollah and stop threatening Israel. It must also release all US citizens missing in Iran or being held on "spurious charges". Mike Pompeo Iran demands Mr Pompeo said if Iran made "major changes" the US would be willing to lift all sanctions, restoring full diplomatic and commercial ties. The US. would even support the modernisation of Iran's economy and help it reintegrate into the global financial system, he said. He added: "A treaty would be our preferred way to go."   Pompeo reaches out to European allies Mr Pompeo reached out to European and Middle Eastern  allies to help ramp up economic pressure on Iran. He said: "We want the support of our most important allies," adding that he welcomed backing from any other nation "sick and tired" of Iran. He said the plan "may seem unrealsistic" but what the US was pursuing was the global consensus befoe the 2015 Iran deal. "Our ears are open to what may be possible," he said, adding that progress with North Korea showed what could be achieved.   Other signatories of the 2015 Ian deal - Britain, France, Germany, the European Union, China, Russia and Iran - have said they will try to keep the agreement alive.  Mr Pompeo said: "I know our allies in Europe may try to keep the old nuclear deal going with Tehran. That is certainly their decision. They know where wee stand." The future of the 2015 deal remains in the balance, with Iran saying it will only keep to the agreement if the economic benefits gained from it remain in placed.  American allies have been clamouring for the Trump administration to explain its 'Plan B' approach to Iran after unilaterally quitting the deal.  US 'fully prepared' to respond if Iran resumes nuclear programme Mr Pompeo said the US was ready if Iran chose to resume its nuclear programme. He said: "Our demands on Iran are not unreasonable - give up your programme. "Should they choose to go back, should they begin to enrich, we are fully prepared to respond to that as well. I hope they will make a different decision, choose a different path." He did not say what the US response would be. European businesses would have to cut ties with Iran Much of the effectiveness of the Trump administration's reimposition of sanctions depends on European businesses cutting economic ties with Iran.   Firms in the EU have taken much more advantage of the 2015 waiving of sanctions to sign contracts increasing business in Iran than those in America.  The EU exported over €10.8 billion (£9.4 billion) worth of goods to Iran in 2017, half of which was made up by machinery and transport. That is up from €6.5 billion (£5.7 billion) in 2015.  Senior Trump administration officials have threatened to impose 'secondary sanctions' on European businesses if they refuse to cancel their contracts. In return the EU has moved to reimpose a "blocking statue" originally meant to circumvent a the US embargo against Cuba in the 1990s that would protect European businesses.

Cougar kills mountain biker and wounds another in Washington state

Cougar kills mountain biker and wounds another in Washington stateTwo friends on a morning mountain bike ride 30 miles (48 kilometres) east of Seattle were attacked by a cougar, killing one of the men and leaving the second hospitalised. The cougar was later found up a tree near the dead man's body, where agents for the state's Fish and Wildlife police shot and killed it hours after the Saturday attack, the Seattle Times reported. The names of neither man were immediately released. The 31-year-old survivor said he and his friend were mountain biking in the Lake Hancock forest area at about 11am when they realised they were being chased by the big cat. "So they stopped and they made a lot of noise, said Capt. Alan Myers of the state department of Fish and Wildlife, ''which is exactly what we counsel people to do. "The two victims then took a minute and were catching their breath about this amazing, incredibly scary event that just occurred and suddenly the victim (the survivor) was attacked again by this cougar.  "It latched onto his head. He said he had his whole entire head in the jaws of this animal and was being shaken around very, very horribly."  Here's a photo of the cougar that attacked two men on a mountain bike ride near North Bend today. One man died. Another man is at Harborview Medical Center tonight @komonews#komonews#Cougarattackpic.twitter.com/gVQSLL3CwB— Tammy Mutasa (@TammyKOMO) May 20, 2018 The second victim turned and started to run away, and the cougar went after him and killed the 32-year-old. The injured man rode for about 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) before getting mobile coverage and calling emergency services. Patient status update: The 31-year-old male who arrived at Harborview this afternoon as a result of a mountain lion attack near North Bend is being treated in the Emergency Dept. He is currently awake and alert and in serious condition.— Harborview Seattle (@harborviewmc) May 19, 2018  Sgt. Ryan Abbott said when rescuers arrived it took them about 30 minutes to locate the second victim, who was dead with the cougar standing on top of him. "The deputies shot at him and spooked him, and he ran off," he said. It took several hours before authorities found the cougar up a tree 45 to 182 metres away and killed it. While the cougar was being hunted, rescuers had to wait to retrieve the dead man's body. Rich Beausoleil, the state's bear and cougar specialist, said it was only the second fatality in the state in the last 94 years. "But it's one too many," he said. Cougars, also known as mountain lions and pumas, are a protected species, the Times reported. Each year, the state allows 250 cougars to be hunted and killed in 50 designated zones.

Pope 'says it is ok to be gay' says Chilean clerical abuse victim after Vatican audience

Posted: 20 May 2018 11:29 AM PDT

Pope 'says it is ok to be gay' says Chilean clerical abuse victim after Vatican audienceGod loves gay people and it is fine to be homosexual, Pope Francis has reportedly said. The Pope made the remarks, which went significantly beyond his previous tolerance for homosexuality, during a meeting three weeks ago with a Chilean man who had been sexually abused by Catholic priests. The Pope offered a heartfelt apology to Juan Carlos Cruz, who was a victim of Chile's most notorious abusive priest, Fernando Karadima. Mr Cruz, who is gay, said the conversation moved on from the abuse crisis to the nature of homosexuality. "He told me 'Juan Carlos, that you are gay does not matter. God made you like that and he loves you like that and I do not care. "The Pope loves you as you are, you have to be happy with who you are,'" Mr Cruz told El Pais, the Spanish newspaper. Pope Francis reportedly made the comments to Juan Carlos Cruz three weeks ago  Credit:  VINCENZO PINTO/AFP The Pope's words appeared to go further in terms of tolerance than remarks he made in 2013, when he said of homosexuals "Who am I to judge?" Speaking to the Vatican press corps on his return to Rome from a trip to Brazil, he said gay people should not be marginalised but rather integrated into society. He was responding to questions about claims of an alleged "gay lobby" of clerics working in the heart of the Vatican. "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?" he replied. The Roman Catholic Church insists that while homosexual orientation is not sinful in itself, homosexual acts certainly are because they are "against natural law". The Pope is not changing official Church teaching, but he is at least signalling a much more open and inclusive approach, which will upset many conservative Catholics. The Vatican neither confirmed nor denied the comments that Francis reportedly made to Mr Cruz. "This is not a shift in theological teaching or dogma," said Robert Mickens, a Vatican expert and the editor of La Croix International, a Catholic publication. "It was a pastoral response to an individual. The Pope always likes to deal with the individual." The Pope elaborated on his 'who am I to judge?' comment in a recent book by an Italian expert on the Vatican. The pontiff told him: "I was paraphrasing by heart the catechism of the Catholic Church where it says that these people should be treated with delicacy and not be marginalised." He added: "Let us not forget that God loves all his creatures and we are destined to receive his infinite love." Mr Cruz was one of three former sex abuse victims from Chile who came to Rome to receive an apology from Pope Francis for the years of abuse that they endured. The victims described clerical sexual abuse as "an epidemic that has destroyed thousands of lives." Pope Francis had initially been slow to realise the gravity of the crisis in Chile and even came to the defence of a controversial bishop linked to Father Karadima, the abusive priest. But he performed an about-turn after Vatican investigators presented him with a 2,300-page dossier showing that sexual abuse of minors had been covered up in Chile for decades, in a pattern that has been repeated in many other countries, notably Ireland. On Friday, Chile's 34 bishops offered to resign en masse over the abuse scandal, an act without precedent in the history of the Catholic Church.

The 'child whisperer' nanny who kept the bridesmaids and pageboys in line at the royal wedding

Posted: 20 May 2018 01:13 PM PDT

The 'child whisperer' nanny who kept the bridesmaids and pageboys in line at the royal wedding If you hadn't been looking for her, you would have missed her entirely. Prince George and Princess Charlotte's nanny blended expertly into the background in St George's Chapel on Saturday, looking on from the sidelines as her little charges and their fellow bridesmaids and page boys performed their duties beautifully. But if Maria Borrallo hadn't been present in the chapel, there is a chance the ceremony might not have gone quite so smoothly. Rehearsals for the big day had been shambolic, insiders say, with the children - the youngest of whom, Zalie, daughter of Prince Harry's friend Jake Warren, was only two years old - proving impossible to keep in line. It was decided that the two eldest children, seven year-old twins Brian and John Mulroney, should be tasked with the important job of holding a corner each of the new Duchess of Sussex's five metre-long train. Ms Borrallo became known as "the child whisperer" Credit: Max Mumby The boys are said to have been practising with a train (with mixed results) since Wednesday, learning how to keep the same pace as they walked down the aisle, when to pick up and put down the the hand-embroidered silk and organza veil - which had been sewn with flowers from each of the 53 Commonwealth nations - and just how high to hold it up. Would they step on it and tear it? Would they remember what to do when? Their mother, the Duchess's best friend Jessica Mulroney, must have breathed a sigh of relief when her sons' duties were finally done. One of the gap-toothed twins- Brian - stole the nation's hearts when he peeked out from behind the Duchess as she entered the chapel, his mouth dropping open in delight at the sight of 600 people waiting for him inside. It provided the perfect photo opportunity which his father, Ben Mulroney, has hinted may have earned him a special treat as a reward. "Ok, Brian," Mr Mulroney wrote on Instagram. "You're getting a TV in your room for the summer." The Mulroney twins had a crucial job at the wedding Credit: Owen Humphreys /PA While the boys were concentrating on their job, their little sister Ivy - along with Princess Charlotte, three, Prince George, four, Prince Harry's godchildren Jasper Dyer, six, and Florence van Cutsem, three, and the Duchess' goddaughters Rylan and Remi Litt, seven and six - were to wait in the wings before trotting after them down the aisle. On the day, it all became too much for little Zalie Warren, who had to be picked up and comforted by Prince George and Princess Charlotte's nanny before she could make her way down the aisle, holding Princess Charlotte's hand. Ms Borrallo, who has been with the family for four years now, was on hand to keep the children in check on Saturday, doing such a brilliant job that many of the parents in the congregation commented that she must be "magic", and said they wanted to know "all her secrets". By the end of the morning, she had become known as "the child whisperer", so adept was Ms Borrallo at keeping the children quiet and happy in the midst of the pomp and circumstance which threatened to overwhelm them. Princess Charlotte and the other children were reportedly pacified with promises of smarties Credit: Jane Barlow/PA Her secret? An insider says one of the techniques the Norland Nanny employed to get the children to stand nicely was the promise of Smarties. And who could blame her? What little person wouldn't behave with the possibility of handful of Smarties hanging in the balance? Whatever her technique, it seems to have worked - all ten children executed their role beautifully. Usually sporting the traditional Norland uniform of a brown fifties-style nurse's dress, white gloves, brown brogues and a little brown bowler hat, Ms Borrallo was able to blend into the background on Saturday in a simple navy dress, eschewing her uniform for the day - only a discreet badge with the Norland motto "Love Never Faileth" giving her away. Ms Borrallo, who was appointed by the Duke and Duchess in 2014, when Prince George was just eight months old, has often been called upon to be on hand at royal occasions, in case one of the children needs to be looked after. She lives with the family at Kensington Palace, and travels with them on royal tours and excursions. Ms Borrallo usually wears a brown nurse's style dress Credit: Max Mumby /Getty Norland Nannies are highly accomplished - they have to be adept at everything from sewing and cooking to self defence. The Duchess of Cambridge has said of her in the past she is "amazing". Ironically, when the Duke of York married Sarah Ferguson in 1986, a young Prince William was such a badly behaved page boy (he refused to remain still while the couple exchanged vows, and stuck his tongue out at the flower girls), that his nanny was replaced following the wedding. His children's nanny will have been invaluable to his family in the past month as they have been adjusting to life with their new arrival, Prince Louis. A look back at royal bridesmaids and pageboys Super nanny Kathryn Mewes explains: "Norlanders don't just consider the children, they consider the father and mother, too. "They are aware of the sensitivities of breastfeeding and sleeplessness, and they allow the mum to focus on the newborn while keeping the other children stable, secure and happy." She certainly performed her duties admirably on Saturday. In fact, Her Royal Highness ought to watch out, after Ms Borrallo's performance in the chapel, she could be getting a call from one or two Hollywood mothers in the coming days. The fighting in Ghazni, which has long had a heavy Taliban presence, follows several days of fighting in Farah province, on the other side of Afghanistan on the border with Iran where the insurgents came close to overrunning the provincial capital.

Erdogan holds controversial election rally in Bosnia

Erdogan holds controversial election rally in BosniaTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday addressed thousands of expatriate Turks in Sarajevo at his only election rally outside Turkey after other European countries banned such events. The Bosnian capital was chosen for the event -- ahead of Ankara's presidential and parliamentary elections next month -- after European Union states such as Germany, Austria and the Netherlands barred Turkish politicians from electioneering in their countries, stoking tensions between Ankara and Brussels. Turkey is scheduled to go the polls on June 24, with three million expatriate Turks allowed to vote, including 1.4 million in Germany.
