Missile that downed MH17 came from Russian military: investigators Posted: 24 May 2018 02:54 AM PDT Investigators probing the 2014 downing of flight MH17 said Thursday for the first time that the missile which shot down the plane over eastern Ukraine travelled from a Russian military brigade. The Joint Investigation Team "has come to the conclusion that the BUK-TELAR that shot down MH17 came from 53rd Anti-aircraft Missile Brigade based in Kursk in Russia," top Dutch investigator Wilbert Paulissen said. |

A Planner's Guide to the Mediterranean Diet Posted: 23 May 2018 07:21 AM PDT 2018 might well be dubbed the year of the Mediterranean diet. Not only did it tie for the best overall diet in the U.S. News Best Diets rankings in January, but this year also marks the Mediterranean diet pyramid's 25th anniversary. Beyond being linked to a host of powerful health benefits including a reduction in heart disease risk, potential weight loss, improved brain health and longevity, much of the eating pattern's staying power can be attributed to its flexibility -- there aren't entire food groups excluded, and followers don't calorie count or track macros. |
Pakistan buries teen killed in Texas school shooting Posted: 23 May 2018 02:41 AM PDT Hundreds mourned a Pakistani exchange student killed in a mass shooting at a Texas high school last week during her burial in Karachi Wednesday. Sabika Sheikh was among the 10 people gunned down at a high school in Santa Fe last Friday when a heavily armed student opened fire on classmates. Relatives sobbed and hugged as Sheikh's remains arrived at her family home in a casket draped with a Pakistani flag. |
Posted: 23 May 2018 10:00 AM PDT A new report suggests that there has been a startling increase in the number of instances where US Border Patrol officers have abused children seeking shelter in the United States from violence and poverty in Central America. The report, based on more than 30,000 pages of Border Patrol reports obtained by chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) through Freedom of Information Act requests, alleges a "pattern of inimidation, harassment, physical abuse, refusal of medical services, and improper deportation between 2009 and 2014." The report follows after a previous disclosure from the ACLU that detailed 116 incidents where officers were alleged to have physically, sexually, or psychologically abused children between the ages of five and 17. |

Amnesty highlights sex-for-food claims in Boko Haram-hit Nigeria Posted: 24 May 2018 01:20 AM PDT Amnesty International on Thursday urged Nigeria to act on claims soldiers and members of the civilian militia have raped women and girls in remote camps for people displaced by Boko Haram but the government said the rights monitor was repeating false accusations. Amnesty said it had gathered multiple testimonies about alleged abuse by the security forces, including claimed that soldiers coerced vulnerable survivors into having sex in exchange for food. In November 2016, police vowed to look into allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation in the camps but several months later, the military rejected the allegations. |
Archaeologists Find 'Holy Grail of Shipwrecks' Carrying Stash Worth Up to $17 Billion Posted: 23 May 2018 11:35 AM PDT In 1708, the San José— a Spanish galleon ship carrying a stash of gold, silver and emeralds — sank during a fierce battle against the British in the Caribbean Sea. Now, after sitting at the bottom of the ocean for 310 years, the San José's shipwreck has finally been officially identified, thanks to an analysis of the distinctive bronze cannons that sank with the ship. |
Syria says Iranian withdrawal not up for discussion Posted: 23 May 2018 07:53 AM PDT The withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria, demanded by the United States, is not up for discussion, a top Syrian official was quoted as saying on Wednesday, adding that Damascus was deciding on its next campaign against rebels. "Whether Iranian forces or Hezbollah withdraw or stay in Syria is not up for discussion because it's the (business) of the Syrian government," Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said in an interview with Russia's Sputnik state news agency. |

Pentagon pulls China's invite to Pacific naval exercises Posted: 23 May 2018 01:05 PM PDT The Pentagon has pulled its invitation for China to join maritime exercises in the Pacific because of Beijing's "continued militarization" of the South China Sea, an official said Wednesday, in the latest sign of US-China strains. China hit back at the decision, calling it "very non-constructive" and saying it was taken without due reflection. "China's continued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea only serves to raise tensions and destabilize the region," Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Chris Logan said. |

The attack took place in the predominantly Shi'ite Shula district, in northwest Baghdad. According to a statement from Iraq's National Security media center, the attacker detonated an explosive vest after he was besieged by security forces at the entrance to the Saqlawiyah park, resulting in the death and injury of "a number of civilians." No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though it bore the hallmarks of Islamic State. |

"We are still a long way from a compromise, we take two completely different paths," Heiko Maas told reporters after a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Pompeo on Monday presented a new US strategy on Iran following US President Donald Trump's controversial decision to pull out of the accord, signed in July 2015 by Iran along with China, the US, Britain, France, Russia and Germany. |

Trump to repeal Obama-era rule banning 'inhumane' hunting techniques Posted: 23 May 2018 01:56 AM PDT Donald Trump's administration has proposed scrapping rules that ban hunters from killing wolves and pups in their dens, hunting black bears with dogs and using bait to lure grizzly bears into the open. An Obama-era stricture blocked the practices, dubbed "appalling" by campaigners, on federal lands in Alaska but was at odds with the state's own policy. It may mean hunters being allowed to resume the practice of using spotlights outside the dens of black bear sows and their cubs to make it easier to kill them, government documents showed. |
