Quakes, lava and gas: Hawaii residents flee volcanic threatsMany rural residents living on an erupting volcano in Hawaii fled the threat of lava that spewed into the air in bursts of fire and pushed up steam from cracks in roadways Friday, while others tried to get back to their homes. Officials ordered more than 1,700 people out of Big Island neighborhoods near Kilauea volcano's newest lava flow, warning of the dangers of spattering hot rock and high levels of sulfuric gas that could threaten the elderly and people with breathing problems. Officials said highways, buildings and utility lines were not damaged, but residents said they felt strong shaking and more stress as they dealt with the dual environmental phenomena.

Kennedy cousin, Michael Skakel, wins retrial of 2002 murder conviction

Posted: 04 May 2018 02:25 PM PDT

Kennedy cousin, Michael Skakel, wins retrial of 2002 murder conviction A court in Connecticut has ordered a retrial of the 2002 murder conviction of Michael Skakel, a cousin of Bobby Kennedy. The ruling by the Connecticut Supreme Court is the latest chapter in the long-running legal battle centred on the murder of Martha Moxley in 1975 in Greenwich, a prosperous town just north of New York City. Miss Moxley was allegedly bludgeoned to death with a golf club by Skakel when she spurned his advances. At the time both were 15 years old. It took more than a quarter of a century for the case to be brought to court. The Kennedy link, Skakel was a nephew of Bobby Kennedy's widow, Ethel, drew international attention to the trial. In 2002 Skakel was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. However, the conviction was overturned in 2013 and he was freed on $1.2 million bail. But that ruling was reversed by the Connecticut Supreme Court which reinstated the conviction. Martha Moxley Credit: AP In the latest hearing Hubert Santos, Skakel's lawyer told the court that the prosecution had failed to present evidence of an alibi put forward by a witness, Denis Ossorio. Skakel maintained that he was several miles away from the scene of the murder, watching a Monty Python film. Justice Richard Palmer, one of the judges who voted in favour of a retrial, said the case had been prejudiced by the failure to present Mr Ossorio's testimony. Miss Moxley's brother, John, said he was disappointed with the ruling and that it was too soon to say what the family would want next in the case. "I don't know what the next steps are. My mom is getting older. I just don't think she has the strength to go with this," said Mr Moxley, 59. He said he would not trade places with Skakel for anything. "He'll be in jail for the rest of his life," Moxley said. "He may not be physically in jail. He may be walking the streets, but he'll be in hell at some point."

Passengers compare scene inside Caribbean cruise ship to the Titanic after 50 rooms were flooded The scene on board a cruise ship in the Caribbean drew comparisons to the Titanic as 50 staterooms on Deck 9 were flooded. A breach in the Carnival Dream's fire extinguishing system led to water pouring into a corridor. One passenger said people had been relocated to the spa to sleep on yoga mats. Marla DeAnn Haase, a passenger, posted images of the flooding on Facebook . She wrote: "Um....FB folks.....this is a rare moment of internet connection ....we are flooding on a cruise, we heard the violins and the silverware all came crashing down. What in the world....say a prayer for us all." That was a reference to violinists continuing to play as the Titanic went down. Marla DeAnn Haase, a passenger, posted images of the flooding on Facebook Credit: Marla DeAnn Haase /Facebook One user responded: "What in the Titanic?" Another said: "I literally thought this was a scene from Titanic." Images from the ship showed staff trying to clean up the mess with buckets. Carnival Cruises said passengers affected would get full refunds, a 50 per cent credit for a future cruise, and could be flown home before the end of the cruise. Staff used buckets to clean up the water Credit: Marla DeAnn Haase / Facebook A spokesman said: "Our onboard teams began cleanup immediately related to this clean water from a fire suppression system. "We appreciate our guests' understanding and sincerely apologise. We also thank our crew members for their quick action and hard work."

Man reunites with stolen dog after an email to Amazon CEO Jeff BezosBusinessman Richard Guttfield came home from work recently to every pet owner's ultimate nightmare. An Amazon delivery driver had stolen Wilma, Guttfield's black miniature schnauzer, after dropping off a bag of dog food at Guttfield's home.  Per CNBC, Guttfield had a difficult time getting Amazon to respond about Wilma's plight — that is, until he emailed CEO Jeff Bezos, a man whose sizable muscles are matched only by his love for lost miniature schnauzers. Apparently. After Guttfield emailed Bezos, Amazon assigned someone to track the offending driver. Eventually, their search was successful, and they were able to return Wilma to Guttfield. SEE ALSO: Playful Shiba is a little too excited about new toy Amazon told CNBC that Wilma's dognapper will not be given an opportunity to strike again — at least not during an Amazon delivery. "This is inexcusable and does not reflect the high standards we have for our delivery partners," a spokesperson said. "We take these matters seriously and this individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages for the independent delivery service provider." We assume Jeff Bezos now has a photo of Wilma framed on his desk. WATCH: Dogs are a treasure and this GPS will help ensure you never lose yours

The best Sunday roasts for sunny weekends

Posted: 06 May 2018 12:00 AM PDT

The best Sunday roasts for sunny weekendsWe British love our Sunday roasts, but sometimes, when the weather is hot, the traditional dinner can seem stodgy and overwhelming. Thankfully, there are plenty of ingredients that will magically turn a plump chicken or leg of lamb into something light and summery, from a splash of lemon juice to a sprinkling of lavender. These recipes are fresh, light and relatively hassle free, making them even more suited to bunging in the oven so you can go out and enjoy the warm weather (while it lasts).  The main event Diana Henry's roast chicken with peaches, honey and lavender Credit: Laura Edwards SERVES Four to six INGREDIENTS 1.8kg chicken, skin-on, jointed into eight, or eight good-sized skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs 3 tbsp olive oil 200ml medium white wine 3 tbsp white balsamic vinegar 4 tbsp lavender honey 5 small, slightly under-ripe peaches 8 sprigs of fresh lavender METHOD Preheat the oven to 190C/gas 5. Heat one tablespoon of the oil in a frying-pan, season the chicken pieces and, in batches, brown them on each side so they get a good colour. Put them into a broad, shallow ovenproof dish large enough to hold the chicken and peaches snugly together in a single layer. Pour the oil out of the pan then return it to the heat and deglaze the pan with the wine, scraping to dislodge all the bits of flavour. Boil until it has reduced to about 100ml, than add one and a half tablespoons each of the balsamic and honey, stirring to dissolve. Pour over the chicken. Halve and pit the peaches and cut each half in two. Dot these around the chicken and season. Brush each piece of peach with a little olive oil, then whisk the remaining honey and balsamic together with a fork. Drizzle over the chicken and peaches and scatter with the lavender (leave some sprigs of lavender whole, use only the flowers from others). Roast for 40 minutes. The chicken should be cooked through and glazed with the honey, and the peaches should be slightly caramelised in patches. If you stick the tip of a sharp knife into the underside of a thigh, the juice that runs out should be clear. Serve in the dish in which the chicken has cooked (you can transfer it all to a warmed platter if you prefer, but be careful as the peaches will be soft and could easily fall apart). Serve with olive-oil-roast potatoes and green beans.  Stevie Parle's roast chicken leg with braised lettuce and peas Credit: Andrew Crowley SERVES Four INGREDIENTS 1 onion, thickly sliced into rings 4 chicken legs 200ml/7fl oz white wine or water 40g/1 ½ oz butter 6 spring onions, thickly sliced on the diagonal 2 little gem lettuces, cut in half lengthways 400g/14oz frozen or fresh peas 3 tbsp of crème fraîche or double cream 4 slices of rustic-style bread 1 small garlic clove Olive oil METHOD Preheat the oven to its highest setting, spread out the onion in a small baking tray or dish and sit the chicken legs on top. Season well and top each leg with a small knob of butter. Place in the hot oven and immediately turn it down to 180C/gas 4. Roast for 45 minutes, pouring in the white wine (or water) for the last 15 minutes. Check the juices run clear before removing from the oven. Remove and keep warm to rest. Melt the remaining butter in a saucepan over a medium heat and gently fry the spring onions until softened, about five minutes. Push the onions to one side and add the lettuce to the pan. Fry until it begins to colour, then stir in the peas. Tip the juices from the roast chicken into the pan and add a splash of boiling water. Season with a little salt and pepper, cover with a lid and boil for four or five minutes until the lettuce is tender. Stir in the crème fraîche and check the seasoning. Toast or grill the bread and lightly rub with the garlic clove and drizzle with a little oil. Spoon the lettuce and peas over the toast and serve with the roasted chicken legs. Dhruv Baker's braised shoulder of lamb with ras el hanout  SERVES Six to eight INGREDIENTS 2.5kg shoulder of lamb, on bone  2 tbsp ras el hanout  50ml light olive oil  2 large onions, roughly chopped  1 bunch fresh thyme sprigs  5-6 cloves garlic, unpeeled  3 tbsp clear honey  For the couscous  350g couscous  1 chicken stock cube  1 small red onion, finely chopped  10-12 cherry tomatoes, quartered  2 tbsp raisins  2 tbsp flaked almonds  2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley  2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander  juice of ½ lemon  2 tbsp olive oil METHOD Prick the lamb all over with a skewer or a sharp knife. Mix the ras el hanout, olive oil and some salt and pepper and rub all over the lamb (this is best done the day before to maximise the flavours but a couple of hours before will suffice). Preheat the oven to 140C/gas 1. Place the onions, thyme and garlic in a roasting-tin or ovenproof dish and sit the lamb on top. Cover tightly with foil and put in the oven for four to five hours. Check every hour or so to make sure the onions and garlic are not burning (if they are then reduce the heat slightly). Drain off the fat in the roasting tin every couple of hours. Remove the foil and cook uncovered for the last 45 minutes. Meanwhile, tip the couscous into a large bowl and crumble in the stock cube. Pour over 400ml boiling water, stir quickly and then cover tightly with cling film. Leave for five minutes and then use a fork to fluff up the grains. Stir through the remaining ingredients and then taste and adjust the seasoning. Lift the lamb out on to a clean chopping-board and use two forks to shred the meat off the bone. Pile the couscous into the centre of a large serving dish, arrange the shredded lamb on top and drizzle over the honey. 'Spice: Layers of Flavour', by Dhruv Baker (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, £25), is available from Telegraph Books at £22.50 plus £1.95 p&p (books.telegraph.co.uk) On the side Lemon and rosemary roast-potato salad  Credit: Yuki Sugiura SERVES Six as a side dish INGREDIENTS 650g waxy baby potatoes  chopped leaves from 2 sprigs rosemary  juice of ½ lemon  1½ tbsp olive oil  250g green beans, topped but not tailed  2 shallots, finely sliced lengthways For the dressing  smidgen of Dijon mustard  1 small garlic clove, grated to a purée 1 tbsp white balsamic vinegar  1 tsp lemon juice  3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil  3 tbsp whipping cream METHOD Preheat the oven to 210C/gas 6½. Put the potatoes into a roasting-tin large enough to hold them in a single layer. Add the rosemary and lemon juice, drizzle with olive oil, season and toss. Roast for about 45 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and golden. Shake the potatoes around a bit while cooking – dark, crusty edges are especially nice. Meanwhile, prepare the dressing. Put the mustard, garlic, balsamic and lemon juice into a small bowl and whisk together with a fork. Season and whisk in the oil followed by the cream. Check for seasoning – it might seem slightly strong but it's going to dress potatoes so needs to balance them. Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them cool for five minutes or so. During this time steam or boil the beans for three to four minutes or until slightly tender but still al dente. Rinse in cold water, drain and gently pat dry with a clean tea towel. Combine the potatoes and green beans with the shallots in a broad, shallow bowl. Drizzle on half the dressing and very gently toss together. Drizzle the rest of the dressing on the top of the salad, and serve immediately.

Marx's birth city of Trier led commemorations of the man officials describe as a "great son of the city", with 600 events planned around the 19th-century scholar hailed for foretelling the ills of capitalism. The centrepiece of the festivities was the unveiling of a 5.5-metre (18-foot) tall statue of the philosopher -- a gift from communist China.

Spy agency NSA triples collection of U.S. phone records: official reportBy Dustin Volz WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. National Security Agency collected 534 million records of phone calls and text messages of Americans last year, more than triple gathered in 2016, a U.S. intelligence agency report released on Friday said. The sharp increase from 151 million occurred during the second full year of a new surveillance system established at the spy agency after U.S. lawmakers passed a law in 2015 that sought to limit its ability to collect such records in bulk. The spike in collection of call records coincided with an increase reported on Friday across other surveillance methods, raising questions from some privacy advocates who are concerned about potential government overreach and intrusion into the lives of U.S. citizens.

US condemns China for 'Orwellian nonsense' after Beijing writes to 36 airlines over Taiwan references

US condemns China for 'Orwellian nonsense' after Beijing writes to 36 airlines over Taiwan referencesThe White House on Saturday harshly criticised China's efforts to require foreign airlines to change how they refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, labeling the effort "Orwellian nonsense." In a statement, the White House said the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration sent a letter to 36 foreign air carriers, including a number of US carriers, demanding changes. The carriers were told to remove references on websites or in other material that suggests Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are part of countries independent from China, US and airline officials said. Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue, with China considering the self-ruled, democratic island a wayward province. Hong Kong and Macau are former European colonies that are now part of China but run largely autonomously. "The United States strongly objects to China's attempts to compel private firms to use specific language of a political nature in their publicly available content," the White House said in its statement. "We call on China to stop threatening and coercing American carriers and citizens." The White House said that President Donald Trump "will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens. ... This is Orwellian nonsense and part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies." At a glance | The One China policy The flap comes on the heels of trade talks with China. On Friday, Trump tweeted that he would meet with US trade officials after China meetings. "It is hard for China in that they have become very spoiled with US trade wins! Trump wrote. A spokesman for Airlines for America, a trade group representing United Airlines, American Airlines and other major carriers, said on Saturday, "We are continuing to work with US government officials as we determine next steps." American Airlines Group Inc confirmed earlier Saturday that it had received the demand. In January, China demanded an apology from Delta Air Lines for listing Taiwan and Tibet as countries on its website. Also in January China suspended Marriott International Inc's Chinese website for a week to punish the world's biggest hotel chain for listing Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as separate countries in a customer questionnaire. US-China Relations | What US presidents have said on Taiwan The apparent intensification of efforts to police how foreign businesses refer to Chinese-claimed territories - even if only in pull-down web menus - underscores just how sensitive the issue of sovereignty has become in a China that is increasingly emboldened on the international stage. China's aviation authority also said in January it would require all foreign airlines operating routes to China to conduct comprehensive investigations of their websites, apps and customer-related information and "strictly comply with China's laws and regulations to prevent a similar thing from happening." In a statement in January, Delta apologised for making "an inadvertent error with no business or political intention," saying it recognised the seriousness of the issue and had taken steps to resolve it.
