US charges former CIA agent with spying for China Posted: 08 May 2018 08:28 PM PDT The US Justice Department announced Tuesday it had indicted a former CIA operative for spying for China, in a case that could be tied to the dramatic collapse of the CIA's China network eight years ago. Three years after he left the CIA in 2007, Jerry Chun Shing Lee took money from Chinese intelligence officers in exchange for information "relating to the national defense of the United States," the Justice Department said. |

This was Mylan's first acknowledgment of possible U.S. supply issues following reports of EpiPen shortages in Canada and Britain last month. Shares of Mylan, which is due to report quarterly financial results on Wednesday, fell 2 percent to $35.37. |

The reported attack came an hour after President Donald Trump announced he was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, calling Tehran a main exporter of terrorism in the region. |

Hezbollah allies gain in Lebanon vote, underscoring Iran sway Posted: 07 May 2018 03:29 PM PDT By Tom Perry, Laila Bassam and Ellen Francis BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hezbollah and its political allies made significant gains in Lebanon's parliamentary election, official results showed, boosting an Iranian-backed movement fiercely opposed to Israel and underlining Tehran's growing regional clout. The leader of Shi'ite Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, called the result a "a very big political, parliamentary and moral victory for the choice of resistance". The number of Hezbollah MPs was the same or little changed, but candidates supported by the group or allied to it gained in major cities. |

"Mr. Pruitt, I can assure you that California, and those who believe in a cleaner future, will win again," Schwarzenegger said. |

Canada looks to stem illegal migration from Nigeria Posted: 07 May 2018 10:36 AM PDT Canada is trying to curb the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria who are flooding into Canada via the United States, officials said Monday. About 2,500 migrants, mostly Nigerian nationals, entered Canada illegally in April, bringing the total so far this year to more than 7,300. At Ottawa's request, US authorities have also recently tightened their visa rules for Nigerians to try to prevent tourists from flying to the US and then hopping across the border to file Canadian refugee claims. |

Decades-long hunt for missing girls leads to Michigan farm: police Posted: 08 May 2018 01:17 PM PDT Investigators were digging in a wooded area where the man, Arthur Ream, led officials 10 years ago to the body of a girl that he was found guilty of murdering, said William Dwyer, commissioner of the Warren Police Department. Dwyer said information from several people, including Ream, led them to believe that the bodies of four to six teenage girls may be buried there. If their remains are located, Ream could face charges related to their disappearances, Dwyer said. |
Posted: 09 May 2018 05:56 AM PDT The Mormon church will cut all ties with Boy Scouts, a week after movement announced its decision to drop 'boy' from its name. A statement issued by the church said it had opted for the split so it could create its own youth programme, although the two organisations' values had clearly diverged over recent years. The announcement was not a complete surprise after the religion last year removed 185,000 boys between the ages of 14 and 18 from the Scouts, signalling an end to a nearly century-old relationship based on shared values. |

US-backed Kurdish fighters resume anti-IS ops: coalition Posted: 08 May 2018 09:49 AM PDT A US-backed Kurdish-led alliance this week launched a new offensive against holdouts from the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, an official said Tuesday. Kurdish members of the Syrian Democratic Forces -- made up of Kurds, Syrian Arabs and other groups -- had quit the Middle Euphrates River Valley in February after Turkey sent troops into Syria and launched an operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia in its Afrin enclave. "This week, following an increase in coalition strikes against the final ISIS controlled areas in Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces resumed offensive operations to clear the final ISIS held territory in eastern Syria," British Army Major General Felix Gedney, a deputy commander of the US-led coalition fighting IS, told Pentagon reporters. |

"We will be moving the Dodd-Frank bill," Ryan told reporters at his weekly news conference, without specifying a timeline. The Senate voted 67-32 in March to endorse a bipartisan bill that would ease oversight of small and mid-sized banks, the first rewrite of the Dodd-Frank reform law enacted after the 2007-2009 financial crisis. |

Israel orders Human Rights Watch representative to leave, says he urged boycott Posted: 08 May 2018 12:44 PM PDT Israel's interior ministry said on Tuesday it had ordered the representative of Human Rights Watch in the country to leave within 14 days, accusing him of supporting a boycott against Israel. Human Rights Watch, a New York-based rights organization, said the decision showed that Israel was seeking to suppress criticism of its human rights record, and that it would challenge the decision in court. |
