Toxic gas follows molten lava as erupting Hawaii volcano destroys homes

Toxic gas follows molten lava as erupting Hawaii volcano destroys homesResidents evacuated from homes threatened by a volcanic eruption spewing lava and gas on Hawaii's Big Island were able to make a quick return visit on Sunday to rescue pets, medicines and essential documents. Authorities said more lava fissures opened overnight in the Leilani Estates area, where lava leapt up to 230 feet (70 metres) into the air. Nine homes had been destroyed, the Hawaii County Civil Defence Agency said. Some of the nearly 2,000 residents evacuated were allowed to go back during a 10-hour window on Sunday to pick up valuables, the agency said on Facebook, so long as conditions permitted. The Lanipuna Gardens neighbourhood remained off-limits due to dangerous volcanic gases. "This is not the time for sightseeing," the agency said on social media, urging others to stay away from the community about a dozen miles (19 km) from where the Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The southeast corner of the island was rocked by a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake on the volcano's south flank on Friday, the strongest tremor since 1975, and more earthquakes and eruptions were forecast, perhaps for months to come. The rest of the island and state were conducting business as usual with no impact to flights to tourism centers, state officials said. "The area where lava is coming to the surface is very far from resort areas," said George Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Petra Wiesenbauer, owner of Hale Moana Hawaii Bed and Breakfast, evacuated on Friday evening with her two teenage children and pets. US Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a Democrat, called on federal officials to quickly respond to needs such as short- and long-term housing and infrastructure repairs. Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes and one of five on the island, has been in constant eruption for 35 years.

Leopard snatches and eats toddler at Queen Elizabeth National park in Uganda

Leopard snatches and eats toddler at Queen Elizabeth National park in UgandaUgandan authorities are hunting for a leopard in Queen Elizabeth National park  after it snatched and ate a ranger's three-year-old son.  The toddler had been left in the care of a nanny at the unfenced staff quarters of a safari lodge in the park, when he was taken by the leopard on Friday night. Wildlife authority spokesman Bashir Hangi said the child had followed the nanny outdoors. "The maid was not aware the child followed her. She heard the kid scream for help, she intervened but it was too late the leopard had vanished with it in the bush and a search was mounted until we got the skull the next day," he said. "The hunt is on with the intention of capturing the leopard and removing it from the wild because once it has eaten human flesh, the temptations are high to eat another human being, it becomes dangerous," he added. The sun sets over Lake George near Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda, Queen Elizabeth is Uganda's most-visited national park, with tourists flocking to watch leopards roam the Mweya Peninsula, which lies beside Lake Edward. The park also hosts African buffalo, Nile crocodile, lions and chimpanzees.  The attack comes just a week after a British safari park owner was attacked by a lion in South Africa.  Mike Hodge, 71, suffered a broken jaw after he was mauled in Marakele Animal Sanctuary in Thabazimbi. Mr Hodge had been showing visitors around the park when the big cat charged him and dragged him into some bushes. Video footage of the incident showed terrified tourists screaming for help as the lion mauled its victim. Keepers eventually killed the 10-year-old lion, named Samba, and Mr Hodge was taken to hospital.   Two years ago, in South Africa, a year a six-year-old boy was snatched by a leopard at Kruger National park, but the youngster escaped with his life.  Kellan Denny was playing with his brother on a wall when the leopard sunk its teeth into his shoulder and dragged him away.  Big Cats Worldwide However, the leopard let go of the traumatised boy, allowing his father to rush in and carry him to safety.  The incident was the first of its kind in 40 years, according to a spokesman for Kruger National Park.

American boy wakes up after being declared brain deadA teenager in Alabama who was declared brain dead regained consciousness a day before his life support was due to be withdrawn. Trenton McKinley, 13, suffered severe brain trauma in a car accident from which doctors believed he would not recover. His parents were told his organs were a match for five children who needed transplants, and they had already signed the paperwork agreeing to donate them when their son showed signs of life. The teenager suffered seven skull fractures in March when he fell from a car trailer which overturned and crushed his head in Mobile, Alabama. Trenton's mother, Jennifer Reindl, said her son had undergone several rounds of surgery, suffering kidney failure and cardiac arrest.  At one point, she was told he would not recover. Trenton faces more surgery as he recovers slowly Credit: Jennifer Reindl/Facebook "He was dead a total of 15 minutes," Ms Reindl told CBS News. "All I saw was a stretcher with his feet. "When he came back they said he would never be normal again." Ms Reindl said added that she agreed to sign donation papers when she was told her son's organs could save five lives. "That also ensured that they would continue to keep Trenton alive to clean his organs for the donation," she said. "The next day he was scheduled to have his final brain wave test to call his time of death, but his vitals spiked so they cancelled the test." His mother called his recovery "a miracle", saying the teenager has been walking and talking and even reading and doing maths. Trenton is now going through a slow recovery process at home. He needs several more rounds of surgery to rebuild his skull and still suffers seizures. He said he believed he was in heaven while he was unconscious. "There's no other explanation but God," he said. "There's no other way that I could have came back."

British man weds bride days after saving her life when crocodile bit her arm offA British man has described the moment he desperately fought to save his fiancee as her arm was bitten off by a crocodile, five days before they got married. Jamie Fox, 27, wed Zanele Ndlovu in a Zimbabwean hospital. "In one week we went from shock and agony to a truly amazing experience," he said. Fox and his then fiancĂ©e, Miss Ndlovu, 25, were canoeing in an inflatable boat on the Zambezi, one of Africa's longest rivers, when they were attacked by a crocodile on April 30. Mr Fox managed to pull his fiancee, a former national tennis player, back out of the water and applied a makeshift tourniquet, but she had lost so much blood it was feared that she may die from the wound. "I was shouting, trying to save her," he said. "She was not complaining of pain when we managed to pull her out of the water, maybe because of the shock. We were hoping the doctors would save her arm but that was not to be." Doctors were unable to save Zenele Ndlovu's right arm Credit: AP Miss Ndlovu was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo but lost her right arm and suffered injuries to her left hand. Five days later, they married in the hospital chapel. "We were glad we still had our lives and managed to keep our wedding date, although we had to do with a much smaller venue," Mr Fox added. "The celebrations went ahead at the original venue but Zanele and I had to remain at the hospital." He described the wedding as "incredible". The couple had dated for around 18 months before he proposed in February. The couple are hoping to settle in the UK Credit: Jamie Fox/Facebook It is believed Mr Fox's mother, Jennette, 58, and his sister Sophie, 24, flew over from their home in Orpington, Kent, to attend the wedding. "We are hoping to settle in the UK so we are sorting out her visa and then we will think of the honeymoon," he added. Miss Ndlovu was discharged from the hospital on Monday.
