Nearly 200 horses found dead on Navajo land in drought-hit Arizona

Nearly 200 horses found dead on Navajo land in drought-hit Arizona The animals lie in neat circles around the pond that was supposed to sustain them as spring temperature rose and water became harder to find. Instead, they collapsed in the mud, exhausted and weakened from drought. Almost 200 feral horses have been found dead around a pond in Navajo land in northern Arizona, according to tribal leaders, the victims of overpopulation and dwindling water resources. Jonathan Nez, vice president of Navajo Nation, said the deaths were an annual problem that had been getting worse. "These horses weren't shot or maliciously killed by an individual," he said. "These animals were searching for water to stay alive. Navajo leaders say they see same problems every year as a result of growing herds of feral animals Credit: AP "In the process, they, unfortunately burrowed themselves into the mud and couldn't escape because they were so weak." Photographs show the carcases of dozens of horses were they had fallen around the stock pond in Gray Mountain. Tribal officials say they are struggling to cope with a feral population that has grown to as many as 70,000 feral horses on the Navajo Nation. Animals were once accustomed to finding water at the stock pond, but locals say it has dried up more quickly in recent years. Skeletal remains close to the pond Credit: AP This time around a particularly dry winter has made conditions even worse. In California it made for a season of extreme wildfires while New Mexico and Arizona are still struggling with intense water shortages.  "This tragic incident exemplifies the problem the Navajo Nation faces in an overpopulation of feral horses," said President Russell Begaye. Federal and tribal officials have begun the gruesome business of disposing of their remains, spreading hydrated lime over the animals before burying them. In all, they counted 191 carcases. "The horses are anywhere from thigh to neck deep in the mud. Some are even buried beneath others," said Nina Chester, of the office of the president. "This is our most humane and safest option." The plan is to cover over the pond completely, redirecting its meagre water flows elsewhere.

Israel prepared to go to war to block Iran in Syria, say Benjamin Netanyahu

Posted: 06 May 2018 05:00 AM PDT

Israel prepared to go to war to block Iran in Syria, say Benjamin Netanyahu Israel would rather face a military confrontation with Iran "now than later", Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday, as both supporters and opponents of the Iran nuclear agreement made last-ditch appeals to Donald Trump ahead of his decision on the deal next week.  With the clock ticking ahead of Saturday's deadline for Mr Trump to announce whether he is pulling the US out of the Iran deal, Israel said it was prepared for a war to stop Iranian forces embedding in neighbouring Syria. "We are determined to block Iran's aggression against us even if this means a struggle. Better now than later," Mr Netanyahu said.   "Nations that were unprepared to take timely action to counter murderous aggression against them paid much heavier prices afterwards. We do not want escalation, but we are prepared for any scenario." Israel has struck Iranian forces in Syria several times in recent weeks and tensions between the two sides are especially high after Mr Netanyahu announced that Israeli spies had stolen thousands of files on Iran's nuclear programme.  As Mr Netanyahu urged Mr Trump to scrap the "fatally flawed" nuclear agreement, Iran issued its own warning against the US leaving the deal.  "If the United States leaves the nuclear agreement, you will soon see that they will regret it like never before in history," said Hassan Rouhani, Iran's president. "Trump must know that our people are united, the Zionist regime (Israel) must know that our people are united." Iran has said that if the US reimposes sanctions it may resume enriching uranium, potentially putting it back on a path towards conflict with the US, Israel and its Arab rivals like Saudi Arabia.   Israeli officials said Sunday that they still did not know what Mr Trump would decide about the nuclear agreement but they were ready for the potential fallout if he did withdraw.  In a briefing in Jerusalem, Israeli officials suggested that an end to the nuclear agreement would mean a return to a situation similar to the early 2010s - when Iran was enriching uranium but facing biting US sanctions, American and Israeli cyber attacks, and threats of possible airstrikes on its nuclear facilities.  Iran's president Hassan Rouhani  "If they resume [enriching uranium] they risk incurring a response from both the US and Israel," a senior Israeli official said.  The officials said they believed even if the US was alone in reimposing sanctions - while Russia, China and European countries stayed in the deal - it would still put Tehran under major economic pressure.  They said they were hopeful that the economic damage would limit Iran's ability to deploy forces in Syria as well as arming the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah and providing support to rebel forces in Yemen. "The first thing sanctions would do is smash their cash machine," an Israeli official said. They said that the money Iran had gained since the lifting of international sanctions was an "engine for empire" and allowed Tehran to bankroll proxy groups across the Middle East.    Con Coughlin: Israel's only aim is to persuade Trump to scrap the Iran nuclear deal - and it could work Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary, is expected to meet Mike Pence, the US vice president, and John Bolton, Mr Trump's top security adviser, in Washington this week as he makes a final British appeal to the White House to stay in the agreement.  France and Germany are likely to make their final own pitches to Mr Trump this week.  If Mr Trump does announce that he is reimposing sanctions on Iran, the sanctions would not kick back into force straight away - creating a window of time where the US might to try to force Iran and Europe to accept a renegotiation of the agreement.  Mr Trump "would be negotiating from a position of extreme strength" in such a scenario, an Israeli official said.  Mr Netanyahu spoke to Theresa May, the prime minister, on Friday about the Iranian intelligence that Israel stole from Tehran. British officials are expected to come to Jerusalem to inspect the documents.   Meanwhile, it was reported that Mr Trump's aides hired an Israeli intelligence agency to dig for dirt on Obama administration officials involved in negotiating the nuclear deal. The investigation was aimed at discrediting the deal, according to The Observer.

Mr Trump made the claim in a tweet Monday morning, although he offered no evidence about what any such conflicts might be, while claiming he was "fighting back" against the "phony" investigation. "The 13 Angry Democrats in charge of the Russian Witch Hunt are starting to find out that there is a Court System in place that actually protects people from injustice … and just wait 'till the Courts get to see your unrevealed Conflicts of Interest!" Mr Trump's tweet reads.
