| 'Alien' asteroid discovered orbiting the wrong way near Jupiter Posted: 21 May 2018 11:30 AM PDT  An "alien" asteroid from another star system has been discovered sharing Jupiter's orbit. Through a telescope the asteroid look like every other in the solar system save for one crucial difference - it is travelling in the wrong direction. It is the first time an interstellar space rock has been found to be permanently residing in the solar system. Earlier this year, a tumbling cigar-shaped object named 'Oumuamua', hit the headlines after flying into earth's galactic backyard, but it merely passed through and out again. But the new 1.8 mile wide rock - code-named 2015 BZ509 - appears to be a long-term resident, according to a study in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The first clue that it was not a native of the solar system came from its "retrograde" orbit of the sun, the opposite the direction of travel taken by all the planets and almost every other object in our system. Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction Credit: NASA / ESA Dr Fathi Namouni, from the Cote d'Azur Observatory in France, lead author of the study, said: "How the asteroid came to move in this way while sharing Jupiter's orbit has until now been a mystery. "If 2015 BZ509 were a native of our system, it should have had the same original direction as all of the other planets and asteroids, inherited from the cloud of gas and dust that formed them." Scientists have concluded it survived by orbiting the sun exactly in step with Jupiter, but in the opposite direction. Co-author Dr Helena Morais, from the Estadual Paulista University in Brazil, said: "The close proximity of the stars, aided by the gravitational forces of the planets, help these systems attract, remove, and capture asteroids from one another." Computer simulations suggest that the asteroid made the jump to our solar system 4.5 billion years ago when the sun was part of a tightly packed star cluster. "That was completely unexpected...it means it is an alien to the solar system," said Dr Namouni. Since asteroids and comets carry organic chemicals and water, the discovery could shed light on the origins of life on Earth, the scientists believe.

| China 'considering scrapping all limits' on number of children per family Posted: 21 May 2018 08:49 AM PDT  China is considering scrapping the limits it places on how many children families can have, ending one of history's most intrusive and controversial social experiments, a report has claimed. China's cabinet, the State Council, has commissioned research to explore what effects such a move would have, and an announcement could be made later this year or in 2019, Bloomberg News said. In recent years, Beijing has been confronting the consequences of four decades of strict family planning controls - a dwindling workforce and a huge increase in elderly citizens. Authorities scrapped the infamous 'one child policy' in 2016, a move which Beijing hoped would kickstart a baby boom and ward off the looming demographic time-bomb. Communist Party chiefs launched a propaganda blitz urging prospective mothers to "seize the time and conceive". But busy younger mothers in urban areas - where the new rules mainly applied - turned their backs on having a second child. Also, a two-child limit remained in place for many. The relaxation in family planning laws consequently failed to have a significant impact on falling birthrates, causing a major headache for leaders. There were just over 17.5 million births in China in 2016, the first full year after the one child policy was scrapped, which represented an increase in the country's birth rate from 1.54 to 1.6 children per woman. China hopes to increase its birth rate to 1.8 by 2021, pushing the total figure each year to up to 21 million. However, many Chinese experts believe that even with no limits on the size of families, China will struggle to significantly boost the number of births. Observers point to a culture of having small families becoming the norm in the country. The phenomenon has become more entrenched with the latest generation of parents, who enjoy the extra freedom and disposable income associated with smaller family units. Li Jianmin, professor of population studies at Nankai University in the northern city of Tianjin, previously told The Telegraph that he expected China's birth rate would stabilise at around 1.6 to 1.7 percent - even without any restrictions on family sizes. "(That) means even less babies will be born in China than abroad," he said. "It is all about Chinese women now having the same lifestyle as those in the West."

The weapon was one of a range of "invincible" nuclear arms announced by Vladimir Putin during a speech in March. "Since its range is unlimited, it can manoeuvre as long as you want," Mr Putin said. "For now, no one in the world has anything like this." But sources with direct knowledge of a US intelligence report told CNBC that four tests of the missile between November and February all resulted in crashes. The longest flight lasted two minutes and covered 22 miles, while shortest ended only four seconds and five miles after launch, they said. CNN previously quoted a US official as saying the cruise missile had crashed during tests. Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied the reported US intelligence findings when asked on Tuesday.
