Ex-NBA Star Scottie Pippen Names 5-Year-Old in Lawsuit Over Home Damages

Ex-NBA Star Scottie Pippen Names 5-Year-Old in Lawsuit Over Home DamagesPhillip Faraone/GettyFormer Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen has named a 5-year-old girl in a lawsuit over alleged damage to his Florida mansion, claiming she ruined his pad by "defacing" it with crayons and markers. The former basketball player had initially filed the lawsuit against lawyer-turned-comedian Lindsay Glazer and her husband, Jacob Woloshin, in 2018, but amended it this week to include the couple's young daughter. In court documents, Pippen accused Glazer and Woloshin of a "failure as parents" for supposedly allowing their child to "deface certain elements of the property with markers, crayons, and/or cause damage of similar nature" while they rented his six-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion. The lawsuit alleges that damages totaled nearly $110,000 and seeks compensation "in excess of $15,000," excluding legal fees, costs, and interest. In addition to the child's alleged "defacing" of the property with crayons and markers, Pippen has also accused the couple of "neglecting the care of the home," "causing the home to become infected with insects," allowing pets to urinate in the home, and "literally stealing personal household items," among other things. Glazer, who last year jokingly set up a GoFundMe page to "replace [Pippen's] missing knife set" and raised over $700 for charity, laughed off the latest allegations. "All jokes aside, who would have ever thought that Dennis Rodman would be strengthening relations with North Korea, and Scottie 'no tippin' Pippen would be the crazy one suing little girls?" Glazer told the New Times Broward Palm Beach."With all of the publicity this ridiculous case was getting, we thought it good to use it as an opportunity to raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation, which assists military and veteran's families," the comedian told the New Times about the fundraising page.According to The Sun-Sentinel, Pippen was ordered to pay $13,190 more in taxes on the home the same year he sued Glazer. Pippen misidentified the home as his primary residence when he was actually renting the home out, which makes him ineligible for a tax break.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope takes another step towards completion

Posted: 30 May 2019 01:31 PM PDT

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope takes another step towards completionNASA's James Webb Space Telescope is late to its own party, and it's not just a little bit late. NASA originally planned to have the spacecraft ready to roll as early as 2007, but a laundry list of setbacks (and stupid human errors on the part of manufacturer Northrop Grumman) have pushed the project back by over a decade and roughly 20 times its original cost. With that much cash dumped into a project, you can bet that NASA is eager to see some hints of serious progress, especially with its tentative 2021 launch window rapidly approaching. The good news is that half of the telescope just completed a round of testing at its manufacturing facility, besting a vacuum chamber designed to put it through conditions it would experience while in space. The telescope is being built in two parts. One half contains the telescope itself as well as various scientific instruments, and the other half is the spacecraft platform which allows it to move and maintain its orbit. The spacecraft half is the portion that just completed its vacuum chamber testing, which put it up against temperatures ranging from negative 235 degrees Fahrenheit to 215 degrees Fahrenheit."The teams from Northrop Grumman and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center are to be commended for a successful spacecraft thermal vacuum test, dedicating long hours to get where we are now," Jeanne Davis, James Webb program manager, said in a statement. "This incredible accomplishment paves the way for the next major milestone, which is to integrate the telescope and the spacecraft elements."The news is a long time coming, but it's definitely a big step in the James Webb program. Ensuring that all the components will work as planned once they make it into space is, of course, crucial, but plenty of hurdles still have to be scaled before the telescope is ready to head skyward. Integrating all of the components takes time, and new issues could crop up at any moment. Let's hope the 2021 date sticks and NASA isn't forced to delay it yet again.

White House 'told Navy to hide USS John McCain' during Trump Japan visit

Posted: 29 May 2019 11:23 PM PDT

White House 'told Navy to hide USS John McCain' during Trump Japan visitDonald Trump's White House wanted the USS John S McCain hidden from sight during his visit to Yokosuka in Japan, it has been reported. The warship is named for the late Arizona senator with whom the president repeatedly and publicly clashed, including by insulting his military service. In an email setting out instructions for Mr Trump's weekend visit an official from the US' Indo-Pacific Command said the destroyer "needs to be out of sight", the Wall Street Journal reported. The email's existence was later confirmed by the Associated Press who spoke to three US officials. The Journal reported that a tarpaulin was placed over the McCain's name before Mr Trump arrived, according to photos it reviewed, and that sailors were instructed to remove any coverings from the ship that included its name.It also reported that sailors from the McCain were given the day off during Mr Trump's visit. Those who did turn up to watch the president speak – wearing uniforms bearing their ship's insignia – were asked to leave, according to the New York Times.McCain's daughter, Meghan, tweeted in response to the story: "Trump is a child who will always be deeply threatened by the greatness of my dads incredible life."There is a lot of criticism of how much I speak about my dad, but nine months since he passed, Trump won't let him RIP. So I have to stand up for him. It makes my grief unbearable."On Thursday Mr Trump tweeted: "I was not informed about anything having to do with the Navy Ship USS John S. McCain during my recent visit to Japan. Nevertheless, @FLOTUS and I loved being with our great Military Men and Women – what a spectacular job they do!"He did not say that he was not told about the ship beforehand. The Independent has contacted the White House for comment. The US Navy denied it had covered up the McCain. It said on Twitter: "The name of USS John S. McCain was not obscured during the POTUS visit to Yokosuka on Memorial Day. The Navy is proud of that ship, its crew, its namesake and its heritage."Pat Shanahan, the acting defence secretary, said the Journal story was "the first I heard about" the request.Commander Clay Doss, a spokesman for the US 7th Fleet, said the tarpaulin was on the ship on Friday but had been removed by Saturday morning, when Mr Trump arrived. "All ships remained in normal configuration during the president's visit," he said. Two US officials said that all the ships in the harbour were lined up for Mr Trump's visit, and they were visible from the USS Wasp aboard which he was due to speak. The officials said, however, that most of their names probably could not be seen since they were side by side but that the McCain's name could be seen from the pier.Officials said the tarpaulin had been placed on the ship for maintenance and removed for the visit. A paint barge was reportedly in front of the destroyer on Saturday morning when 7th Fleet officials walked the pier to see how everything looked for the visit. It was ordered to be moved and was gone by the time Mr Trump arrived, the officials said.Sailors from the McCain were not told to stay away but that many were away for the long weekend, officials also said. They added that some 800 sailors from more than 20 ships and Navy commands were aboard the USS Wasp during the president's visit, and all wore the same Navy hat that has no logo, rather than wearing individual ship or command hats.In 2017, 10 sailors died when the McCain collided with a container ship and suffered serious damage.Additional reporting by AP

Tankers almost certainly damaged by Iranian naval mines, John Bolton says

Posted: 29 May 2019 12:27 PM PDT

Tankers almost certainly damaged by Iranian naval mines, John Bolton saysJohn Bolton, the US national security advisor, has publicly accused Iranian forces armed with naval mines of carrying out an attack on oil tankers earlier this month.  Speaking in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mr Bolton said Iran "almost certainly" used mines in the sabotage attack which damaged two oil tankers and two smaller ships at the Emirati port of Fujairah.   "There is no doubt in anybody's mind in Washington who is responsible for this and I think it's important that the leadership in Iran know that we know," he said.  But Mr Bolton also adopted a softer tone than in the past, saying the US was not planning military action in response to the Fujairah attack.  However, he warned and Iran its proxy groups that "that these kind of activities risk a very strong response from the Americans." Mr Bolton also said Iran had unsuccessfully tried to carry out an attack at the Saudi port of Yanbu but gave no further details.  Persian gulf sabotage attacks Iran denied responsibility and said Mr Bolton's accusations were "ridiculous".   Western officials have long suspected that Iran was behind the May 12 sabotage attack in the UAE, which damaged a Saudi and a Norwegian oil tanker, but Mr Bolton's comments about naval mines are the first time a possible method has been revealed.  The UAE is continuing to lead an international investigation into the sabotage and has not formally accused any state of responsibility.  Meanwhile, Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian president, said the "road is not closed" for negotiations between the US and Iran if Washington agrees to lift crippling sanctions and return to the negotiating table.  Mr Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear agreement last year and imposed sanctions designed to completely choke off Iran's oil exports. The president has repeatedly expressed his hope that Iran would stop supporting militant groups across the Middle East and enter negotiations with the US. "I'm sure that Iran will want to talk soon," he said last week. The US has been building up its forces in the Middle East since early May, when Mr Bolton announced that an American aircraft carrier and bomber squadron was being sent to the region in response to Iranian threats. While Mr Bolton has taken a consistently hard line on both Iran and North Korea, Donald Trump has publicly distanced himself from his aide's hawkish approach.

President Xi Jinping's visit to a rare earths plant last week had sparked speculation that China would use its dominant position as an exporter of rare earths to the United States as leverage in the trade war.

New renders show Apple’s leaked iPhone 11 design from every angle

Posted: 30 May 2019 05:21 AM PDT

New renders show Apple's leaked iPhone 11 design from every angleApple's upcoming new iPhone 11 series smartphones won't be the most exciting new handsets of 2019. Not even close. From the front, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R (if that's what Apple ends up naming them) will sport a design that looks identical to Apple's iPhones from the last two years. Around back, they'll look the same as the iPhone X and iPhone XS apart from a larger and more unsightly square camera bump and slightly different glass that's frosted instead of clear, or so says TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Will they be elegant and sleek? Sure they will. This is Apple, after all. Will they feature fit and finish that's a cut above anything created by Android phone makers in 2019? Of course. To this day, Apple refuses to cut corners or use lesser materials in an effort to decrease costs. Why should it, when the company can get away with charging as much as $1,450 for a single iPhone? If you're looking for excitement, there's plenty to be found elsewhere in the smartphone industry this year. The Galaxy S10 series is already here with a sleek new all-screen design that's interrupted only by a small "hole-punch" camera. The OnePlus 7 Pro is also already available to buy, and its all-screen design has no interruptions thanks to a selfie camera that pops up out of the top edge of the phone. There are more great designs coming later this year, including a revamped hole-punch design on the Galaxy Note 10, and foldable smartphones will make their debut soon as well. So, the new iPhone 11 and its two counterparts certainly aren't the most exciting phones of the year, but they are still the most hotly anticipated smartphones of 2019. We still have more than three months to go before Apple's next-generation iPhones hit store shelves, but a new series of renders should help pass the time by showing us Apple's leaked iPhone 11 design from every angle. As is the case each and every year, the design files for Apple's upcoming new iPhone models were stolen from Foxconn's factory a few months ago. Accessory makers use them to design cases that will be ready in time for the new iPhone models' release, while others use them to mock up Apple's next-gen iPhones for all to see. Such was the case for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R earlier this year, and now we have a new set of renders to enjoy that are based on those earlier leaks. These latest images come from YouTuber Waqar Khan, who mocked up Apple's upcoming iPhone 11 in all three colors we're expecting to see later this year: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. Here's a closer look at each individual color:Unlike most other mockups we've seen that basically take Apple's iPhone XS and slap a big square camera bump on the back, these renders represent Apple's iPhone 11 much more closely. Aside from the color-matched square camera bump that will now be home to three lenses, the mute switch on the iPhone 11 is small and round like it is on the iPad Pro, and it slides down the side of the iPhone instead of front to back. Here's a video showcasing Khan's new iPhone 11 renders:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHCA32iKKvs

The Next Best Thing to an F-35?: Check Out Russia's 'New' MiG-35

The Next Best Thing to an F-35?: Check Out Russia's 'New' MiG-35With Russia's MiG-29 nearing the end of its shelf life as Russia's staple multirole fighter, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) are taking an increasing interest in its successor: the MiG-35.For years, its manufacturer has marketed the MiG-35 as a "4++" fighter: "I would say that this is a new plane that surpasses our foreign competitors. In other words, this is a 4++ level plane," stated Mikoyan General Director Ilya Tarasenko in a recent interview.Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed this sentiment at a Kremlin conference: "I note that the new multipurpose MiG-35 fighter has enhanced flight and technical characteristics and is equipped with the very latest weapons systems. You know this better than I. It can follow from 10 to 30 targets at once, and can operate over land or sea. This is a genuinely unique and promising aircraft, 4++, you could say, very close to being fifth generation."But what exactly does "4++" mean, and is the MiG-35 really a hair's breadth away from being considered a fifth-generation fighter?A recent documentary from T24, a Russian state-funded television channel, sheds light on the MiG-35's capabilities while offering plenty of high-fidelity footage of the plane in action.

Louisiana’s Democratic Governor Signs Heartbeat Abortion Bill Into Law

Louisiana's Democratic Governor Signs Heartbeat Abortion Bill Into LawLouisiana governor John Bel Edwards on Thursday signed legislation prohibiting abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which usually occurs around six weeks into pregnancy. The heartbeat bill, which does not include an exception for rape or incest, will be implemented only if similar legislation recently passed in Mississippi is upheld in federal court. It passed the state House of Representatives on Wednesday on a bipartisan 79-23 vote. The bill's sponsor, Democratic state senator John Milkovich, argued that the effective six-week abortion ban reflected the values of his constituents in a statement celebrating the bill's passage."God values human life, and so do the people of Louisiana," the state senator, John Milkovich, said this month. "We believe this is an important step in dismantling the attack of the abortion cartel on our next generation."In a statement announcing his support for the legislation Wednesday night, Edwards, who is the first Democratic governor to sign a heartbeat bill, touted his liberal bonafides, including his expansion of public healthcare options and his defense of LGBTQ rights, and acknowledged that many of his fellow Democrats disagreed with his views on abortion."I know there are many who feel just as strongly as I do on abortion and disagree with me — and I respect their opinions," the governor said.> My statement on the passage of SB 184 following final passage by the Louisiana Legislature. lalege lagov pic.twitter.com/SxadrmuUTC> > -- John Bel Edwards (@LouisianaGov) May 29, 2019Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, and Missouri also passed fetal heartbeat bills earlier this year. Alabama went even further in restricting abortion, passing legislation earlier this month that effectively bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy, even in cases of rape of incest, in an effort to prompt a Supreme Court challenge to Roe v. Wade.

Disney says it won't make any more films in Georgia if draconian abortion laws come into force in the US state

Posted: 29 May 2019 11:57 PM PDT

Disney says it won't make any more films in Georgia if draconian abortion laws come into force in the US stateDisney's chief executive has warned Georgia that the company's film and TV productions are likely to abandon the state if its controversial abortion bill becomes law. Bob Iger said it would be "very difficult" for the entertainment giant to continue working in the state if the so-called "heartbeat bill", which outlaws terminations from as early as six weeks, comes into force. The Walt Disney Company has shot some of its biggest films in the US state, including Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame. Speaking to Reuters, Iger said: "If it becomes law, it'll be very difficult. "I think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. "Right now we are watching it very carefully." Sen John Milkovich speaks outside the State Capitol in Louisiana where the House passed Milkovich's 'fetal heartbeat' bill Georgia has been dubbed the "Hollywood of the South" after it lured production companies with favourable tax laws. The state offers a tax credit that has lured many film and TV productions. The industry is responsible for more than 92,000 jobs in Georgia, according to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and some 455 productions were shot in Georgia in 2018, according to the state. However, its proposed abortion laws have caused fury across the industry, with leading stars lining up to condemn the bill. Netflix has also warned it could pull out of the state. Georgia's bill bans abortions in cases where a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks. It is due to come into effect on January 1 2020, although campaigners have already said they will fight it in the courts. It came as last night Louisiana on Wednesday also passed a bill banning abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, becoming the seventh state to do so. The bans are expected to be blocked in lower courts, but supporters plan to appeal such decisions until they reach the Supreme Court.

Apple is looking into building foldable iPhones out of glass

Posted: 29 May 2019 03:04 PM PDT

Apple is looking into building foldable iPhones out of glassSamsung wasted the opportunity to become the first major smartphone vendor to launch a foldable handset, as the Galaxy Fold turned out to have a few design flaws that compromised the screens during regular use. It's not that Samsung had the best foldable phone design out there, but the Korean giant has been at the forefront of foldable smartphone hype for years. We've been waiting for two years for the Galaxy Fold to arrive, but Samsung kept pushing the launch event as it was still perfecting the phone's design and software. Making foldable handsets, as it turns out, isn't easy, and the Galaxy Fold's early misfortune is a testament to that. On the other hand, Samsung does deserve some praise for pushing the envelope when it comes to new form factors. Someone had to do it, regardless of the risk. But Samsung is hardly alone, as everyone else in the business is working on such devices, including Huawei, which unveiled its Mate X at the same time as the Galaxy Fold. One of these companies is Apple, which has been rumored to be working on foldable iPhones for quite a while. Such a radical design change isn't expected for another few years, but it looks more and more like Apple is dedicating ample time to studying foldable devices. The iPhone maker was just awarded a patent for a Foldable cover and display for an electronic device (US Patent No. 10,303,218). The documentation was filed on January 12th, and it's hardly the first proof we got that Apple is interested in foldable handsets. As always, just because Apple owns patents describing new technologies doesn't guarantee these innovations will be included in any future devices. But the patent seems to suggest that Apple has given the subject a great deal of thought, as foldable devices may have several advantages over traditional electronics, whether they're smartphones or laptops:> Traditionally, electronic devices have a single form factor that may be driven by the size and shape of the display. Because many traditional displays are rigid or at least not flexible, a traditional device that is adaptable to accommodate multiple form factors includes the use of a mechanical hinge or pivot joint. However, these traditional configurations used for traditional notebook and tablet devices are inherently limited by the integration and size required by a separate mechanical hinge.> > Embodiments described herein are directed to devices and techniques for forming portable electronic devices having a flexible cover coupled to a flexible display that do not have the limitations or drawbacks associated with some traditional solutions. The documentation reveals not only potential designs for flexible iPhones and iPads but also goes into great detail on how to manufacture flexible covers to ensure they both work as intended, and are durable enough to protect the screen underneath the flexible glass.Apple proposes foldable devices that could have as many as two hinges and three distinct screen parts that could fold in an "S" shape, or a "G" shape, as seen in these drawings. Furthermore, Apple explains that several areas of the screens could be in use at different times and that the device could be partially unfolded to increase the available screen size. The patent looks at various techniques for creating flexible cover sheets, listing several ceramic materials that could be used for the foldable screens, including chemically strengthened glass, sapphire, or zirconia. What's interesting is that Apple focuses on glass/ceramic for manufacturing the cover sheets rather than other materials, whereas phones like the Galaxy Fold and Mate X do not have glass displays.Apple explains how these foldable sheets of glass would have to be manufactured to ensure they can be bent around an axis safely and survive the stress generated by repeatedly folding and unfolding the screen, and describes the complex system of layers of a flexible display. The document also looks at ways to ensure the finished product has a smooth surface, one that would improve the appearance of the device and the user experience. Finally, the patent focuses on the cover sheet of the foldable device, which means it doesn't feature any details about the other important part of a flexible gadget: The hinge. Then again, this isn't Apple's only patent on flexible devices -- just another piece in the flexible iPhone puzzle. That said, we'll have to wait and see whether Apple will launch a foldable iPhone or iPad in the near future that will make use of any of the inventions described in this patent.

Teacher writes 'WTF is this?' on child's homework

Teacher writes 'WTF is this?' on child's homeworkA teacher is being investigated after writing "WTF" on a student's homework. The science tutor penned the missive – text-slang for "what the f***?" – after apparently finding the pupil's science assignment somewhat underwhelming."WTF is this?" she wrote. "Absolutely no credit."But after the pupil's mother complained, the unnamed teacher – at Rutherford High School in Florida's Bay County – has been told the incident will be investigated."It wasn't anything about not getting the credit, it was more so the language…that was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever," said Melinda Smith, whose son received the unflattering feedback. "I think for sure she needs to be reprimanded. I believe that something should be placed in her file."Neither her son's name or age have been revealed.Rutherford High's principal, Coy Pilson, said the school was taking action."Once we were notified, I notified district officials and our HR has been involved and they're currently investigating the situation," he told regional TV station WJHG. He would not be drawn on what action may be taken but suggested the incident was out of character for the member of staff involved."She was apologetic and it was a mistake on her part," he said. "All of the teachers at Rutherford High School are caring, loving teachers and we're also human and so, we make mistakes."But we understand that we are called to a high professional standard and when we make mistakes, we try to correct those mistakes and move forward."

Apple, Google and Microsoft are fighting to keep your encrypted chats private

Posted: 30 May 2019 04:02 PM PDT

Apple, Google and Microsoft are fighting to keep your encrypted chats privateJust as more tech companies are starting to see the light when it comes to privacy and security, intelligence agencies would still like to be able to spy on encrypted communication, whether it's text chats or calls. The same goes for the British spies at GCHQ, who proposed back in November that they should be able to eavesdrop on encrypted messages. Several companies, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, WhatsApp, and others, have responded to GCHQ, criticizing its push to undermine the security of end-to-end encryption. Apple has been making a big deal about the fact that its devices and services are meant to protect the privacy and security of users, and that includes using encryption to lock gadgets, as well as to protect the contents of iMessage texts and FaceTime calls. More recently, Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, announced a significant pivot to privacy and security, which includes using end-to-end encryption in chat apps. Google followed with a similar move, although the company looked to redefine what privacy means and to simultaneously suggest that its kind of privacy doesn't come with as steep costs as Apple's.Apple, Google, Microsoft, and WhatsApp are just four of the 47 signatories that signed an open letter that was published on Lawfare to criticize the UK intelligence agency's plans to listen in on encrypted calls whenever necessary. This isn't the first time a coalition of tech giants has spoken out in favor of encryption. The GCHQ seems to believe that adding a silent law enforcement participant to a group call or chat would be enough to allow them access to targeted groups. However, adding this "ghost" member would also imply that the tech companies who develop chat apps would go to great lengths to hide the existence of this ghost from the other members of the chat. That way, the law enforcement officer collecting information on a target would have access to all the contents of a chat or call in an unencrypted format.Lawfare, which worked with those 47 entities on the response, explained in the letter what this proposal would actually mean if implemented, concluding that adding a ghost member to all of these chats would "undermine the authentication process that enables users to verify that they are communicating with the right people, introduce potential unintentional vulnerabilities, and increase risks that communications systems could be abused or misused.""If users cannot trust that they know who is on the other end of their communications, it will not matter that their conversations are protected by strong encryption while in transit," Lawfare writes. "These communications will not be secure, threatening users' rights to privacy and free expression."The letter, available in full at this link, urges GCHQ to abandon the ghost proposal and any other approach that would pose similar risks to security and welcomes further discussion on the topic.

Louisiana abortion law: Fury as Democratic governor says he will sign bill banning terminations into law

Louisiana abortion law: Fury as Democratic governor says he will sign bill banning terminations into lawLouisiana lawmakers have passed a strict new abortion ban which will stop some women from having the procedure before they even know they are pregnant. In a 79-23 vote on Wednesday, the Louisiana House gave final passage to a bill barring abortion once there is a detectable fetal heartbeat, as early as the sixth week of pregnancy. The state joins Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio, which have all passed similar "heartbeat" bills this year.Missouri politicians also approved an eight-week ban on abortion and Alabama has gone even further, outlawing virtually all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest. None of the bans have taken effect, and all are expected to face legal challenges.Louisiana Democratic governor John Bel Edwards supports the ban and intends to sign it into law despite opposition from national party leaders who say such laws are attacks on women. He said in a statement after the ban's passage: "I know there are many who feel just as strongly as I do on abortion and disagree with me – and I respect their opinions."As I prepare to sign this bill, I call on the overwhelming bipartisan majority of legislators who voted for it to join me in continuing to build a better Louisiana that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone."Abortion opponents are pushing new restrictions on the procedure in the hope a case will make its way to the high court, and two new conservative justices appointed by US president Donald Trump could help overturn the US Supreme Court's 1973 Roe V Wade decision that legalised abortion nationally.Louisiana's prohibition would only take hold if neighbouring Mississippi's law is upheld by a federal appeals court. A federal judge temporarily blocked that Mississippi law on Friday.Abortion rights activists said Louisiana's bill would effectively eliminate abortion as an option before many women realise they are pregnant, calling the proposal unconstitutional. The legislation includes an exception from the abortion ban to prevent a pregnant woman's death or "a serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function" – or if the pregnancy is deemed "medically futile".However it does not include an exception for a pregnancy caused by rape or incest.A doctor who violates the prohibition under the bill could face a prison sentence of up to two years, as well as having their medical licence revoked.Although similar abortion bans have drawn sharp criticism from Democrats nationwide, Louisiana's proposal won wide bipartisan support and was sponsored by a Democrat from the north-west corner of the state, Senator John Milkovich.Support from Mr Edwards, who is running for re-election this autumn against two Republicans, is expected to help shore up his position with some voters in his conservative home state, even if it puts him at odds with national Democratic Party leaders and donors. The ban is one of several bills that Louisiana politicians are advancing to add new restrictions on abortion.Another bill nearing the governor's desk would limit where medication-induced abortions can be performed to the state's three licensed abortion clinics.Reacting to the news Mr Edwards was poised to sign the bill, Allison Galbraith, second vice chair of Maryland Democratic Party, said: "We keep a big tent, but I've no room for being so incompetent or spineless that you don't get or don't care what these bills do."Adam Best, an activist and co-host of The Left podcast, tweeted: "Democrats are the party of civil rights and social justice. Being pro-choice is non-negotiable. "You can't have DINOs like John Bel Edwards making draconian abortion laws. Should be zero tolerance for Dems like that."Krishan Patel, who described himself as a progressive Democrat from Irvine on his Twitter profile, said: "If John Bel Edwards wants to make the government force a girl violently raped by her own father to carry that pregnancy out to term and give birth, then he does not deserve any Democratic support."Leana Wen, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, added that the law would "devastate the health and well-being of women and families".While Jacob Taber tweeted: "The Democratic Party has no room for misogynists who want to police women's bodies."The chief executive of Walt Disney said it would be "very difficult" for the media company to keep filming in Georgia if a new abortion law takes effect.Bob Iger said the law would mean many people would not want to work in the US state.Georgia's Republican governor Brian Kemp signed the legislation earlier this month. The law bans abortion once cardiac activity can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks. If it survives court challenges, the law is due to take effect on 1 January.Disney has shot blockbuster films such as Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame in the state.Netflix has also warned it would "rethink" its film and television production investment in Georgia if the law goes into effect.Agencies contributed to this report.

Nissan's technology could pay in Renault-FCA deal -sourcesBEIJING/TOKYO, May 30 (Reuters) - Nissan's advanced technologies including platforms and electric powertrains could give it leverage in a merger involving Renault and Fiat Chrysler, thanks to a royalty system it has with the former, two people with knowledge of the matter said. A merged Renault-Fiat Chrysler could face an extra hurdle each time it uses technology developed by Nissan Motor Co or Mitsubishi Motors Corp, while the two Japanese automakers stand to gain a client in Fiat Chrysler (FCA) , one of the people said. Nissan's technology, particularly in electrification and emissions reduction, could give it some sway in the $35 billion potential tie-up between Renault and FCA, even as its stake in the newly formed company would be diluted.

The Real Reason You Should Fear Stealth F-35s

The Real Reason You Should Fear Stealth F-35sThe sale of F-35 strike fighters to the UAE cannot be limited only to the Emirates. Rather, such a deal will be cited as precedent for other Gulf states and they will demand that they get F-35s as well. How can the United States refuse a future Saudi request for the F-35 once they have been sold to the UAE? Past arms deals with the Gulf states shows that once thresholds are crossed—for example, the sale of advanced fourth generation fighters or long range precision-guided munitions (PGMs)—the proliferation of such capabilities among the Gulf states is widespread and rapid. In a June 2017 article in the National Interest, I advocated that the United States provide Israel a long-lasting regional monopoly on the F-35 joint strike fighter. My line of argument was that since Israel's aerial superiority—which remains critical to its Qualitative Military Edge (QME)—is already being seriously eroded through the sale of large quantities of advanced U.S.-made fighters and munitions to the Gulf states, Israel's only real advantage would be through the exclusivity of its F-35 "Adir" fighters.(This article first appeared in 2017.)

Motorola just unveiled the $499 Moto Z4 with 2-day battery life and upgradeable 5G

Posted: 30 May 2019 06:11 AM PDT

Motorola just unveiled the $499 Moto Z4 with 2-day battery life and upgradeable 5GThe cat was let out of the bag a little early regarding Motorola's new Moto Z4, the $499 handset the company officially unveiled this morning -- and which Amazon mistakenly sold to a user two days before we were supposed to, er, know it existed. Nevertheless, it's here now -- or, rather, it will be soon, as it hits Verizon in the US two weeks from today. In keeping with past Z flagships, Verizon has got the exclusive stateside, and as with the announcement of the Moto Z3 as the world's first "5G-upgradeable" smartphone, the Z4 will likewise be upgradeable to 5G via the company's "Moto Mod" component once 5G networks are available in your area.Among the highlights of this newest addition to Moto's Z series: it will run Android 9 Pie out of the box and sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core processor. You'll have 4GB of memory and 128 GB of internal storage, with up to 512 GB of expandable storage via microSD. The device also comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor and promises a battery life of "up to 2 days."Movies, games, and photos should look stunning on the 6.4-inch Max Vision OLED display that stretches from edge to edge and offers a screen-to-body ratio of 85%. The massive 3600 mAh battery here is also the largest ever on a Moto Z. Additionally, the device is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack and the company's largest-ever 48-megapixel rear camera sensor that uses new Quad Pixel technology to capture high-quality 12 MP images. The Z4's rear camera also includes 4x better light sensitivity, in addition to optical image stabilization plus AI-guided portrait lighting, AR stickers, live filters, support for Google Lens and much more. Motorola specifically touts Night Vision, which is included in the rear camera software and layers together eight separate frames taken with different exposure values. After performing some dynamic noise reduction and sharpening, the result is an image with enhanced detail and more accurate colors even in situations with challenging lighting.Verizon will start selling the Z4 in Flash Gray on June 13, and in Frost White later this summer, for $499. It will be available for $20.83 for 24 months on a Verizon Device Payment plan, but for a limited time if you switch to Verizon or add a new line and get a Z4 you can pay $10 for 24 months, an overall savings of more than $200.Existing Verizon customers can upgrade to a Z4 and save $100 when they buy a new phone on a Verizon Device Payment plan. Starting June 6, meanwhile, a universally unlocked version of the Z4 will be available for $499 bundled with the Moto 360 camera Mod at Best Buy, B&H Photo and at Amazon, with pre-sales starting today.

In its first earnings report as a publicly traded company, Uber said revenue climbed 20 percent to $3.1 billion from the same quarter last year, but that it lost $1 billion.
