Demonstrator killed and dozens injured in Venezuela clashes as opposition protests fizzle out

Posted: 02 May 2019 03:40 AM PDT

Demonstrator killed and dozens injured in Venezuela clashes as opposition protests fizzle outMay Day clashes between opposition supporters and Venezuela's armed forces in Caracas left a woman dead and 46 people injured on Wednesday.  Venezuelans heeded opposition leader Juan Guaido's call to take to the streets on Wednesday in a bid to force President Nicolas Maduro from power, but there was little concrete sign of change in a crisis that increasingly looks like a political stalemate. Guaido had called for the "largest march" in Venezuela's history and said on Twitter that "millions of Venezuelans" were in the streets in "this final phase" of his move to oust Maduro. But by late afternoon, many of the protesters in the capital Caracas had drifted home. National Guards fired tear gas at a hardcore of demonstrators who remained, and one injured demonstrator was carried by others to a first aid truck, Reuters video showed. Rights organizations said a young woman died in surgery after being shot in the head during a protest in Caracas. Guaido confirmed via Twitter that a woman died after being shot. The standoff in the South American country increased tensions between the United States and Russia, which accused each other of interference in the OPEC-member nation's affairs. Venezuela | Read more Despite Guaido's calls for the military to support him, the armed forces leadership has so far remained loyal to Maduro, who has been in power since his mentor, the late President Hugo Chavez, died in 2013. "If the regime thought we had reached maximum pressure, they cannot even imagine," Guaido told thousands of cheering supporters. "We have to remain in the streets." It was unclear what more Guaido can do at this point. The Venezuelan opposition has often staged huge street protests against Maduro but failed to dislodge him despite a deep economic recession and hyperinflation. Demonstrators said they were prepared for the process of ousting Maduro to last a long time. "We need to keep going," said Laila Amezquita, a 52-year-old nurse from Caracas' downtown Candelaria district. "In three months, Guaido's been able to do what they have not done in 20 years, and one has to be patient." Thousands took to the streets, but it was not enough Credit: FEDERICO PARRA/ AFP Others are frustrated that nothing has changed more than three months after Guaido, head of the opposition-run National Assembly, invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency, arguing that Maduro's 2018 re-election was illegitimate. Guaido is recognized as Venezuela's legitimate head of state by the United States, the European Union and others, while Maduro is backed by countries including Russia, China and Cuba. Those fault lines are increasingly putting Venezuela at the heart of global geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump's administration has imposed sanctions on the Maduro government and refused to rule out military intervention, although it says it prefers a peaceful transition. National Guards fired tear gas at a hardcore of demonstrators after the majority of protesters went home Credit: MATIAS DELACROIX/AFP "Military action is possible. If that's what's required, that's what the United States will do," U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox Business Network. The Pentagon appeared to downplay any active preparations to directly intervene in Venezuela, but acknowledged detailed contingency planning. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Pompeo on Wednesday that further "aggressive steps" in Venezuela would have grave consequences, Russia's Foreign Ministry said.

Russia accuses Venezuelan opposition of resorting to violence

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:14 PM PDT

Russia accuses Venezuelan opposition of resorting to violenceRussia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday accused the opposition in Venezuela of resorting to violence in what it said was a brazen attempt to draw the country's armed forces into clashes. The ministry made the allegation after Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido called for a military uprising to oust President Nicolas Maduro and armed factions exchanged gunfire outside a Caracas air base as the country hit a new crisis point after years of political and economic chaos. Russia, which has supplied weapons to Venezuela and acted as a lender of last resort, has accused the United States of trying to undermine Maduro, someone Moscow counts as one of its closest allies in Latin America.

Google’s awesome new privacy feature will auto-delete your location history

Posted: 01 May 2019 01:30 PM PDT

Google's awesome new privacy feature will auto-delete your location historyWe had our first hint this was coming thanks to a beta version of Google Maps from a few months ago, inside of which code was found that revealed Google was considering an excellent new privacy feature. And today, after getting a black eye from reports last summer that revealed Google was tracking and saving your location even when you thought you'd disabled the feature, Google announced the addition of a new privacy control available to users: Auto-deletion of your location history. The feature, which is coming first to location history as well as to your web and app activity, will roll out in the coming weeks, according to a company blog post penned by Google Search product manager David Monsees and Google Maps product manager Marlo McGriff.Presumably, this new feature covers all of the location data Google collects about you. The company got in trouble last year when an AP investigation revealed that users who thought they'd turned off the location history setting were still seeing their data collected and stored -- not realizing that Google catalogues your location details in a few different places."You can already use your Google Account to access simple on/off controls for Location History and Web & App Activity, and if you choose -- to delete all or part of that data manually," today's announcement reads. "In addition to these options, we're announcing auto-delete controls that make it even easier to manage your data."Here's how it works. All you need to do is choose a time limit for how long you'll allow Google to save your activity data, with the options being between three and 18 months. Any data older than the limit you set gets automatically deleted on an ongoing basis. It's certainly a positive step that Google is taking action here, although it's this kind of thing that drew the ire of European regulators last year, so the company clearly needed a prodding to fix things. Today's blog post also seems to hint that this feature is coming soon to other aspects of your Google experience, with the reference to the fact that it's "coming first" to location history and your web and app activity."You should always be able to manage your data in a way that works best for you -- and we're committed to giving you the best controls to make that happen," today's announcement concludes.

Experts warned '13 Reasons Why' could lead to suicides. A new study suggests they were right.

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:40 PM PDT

Experts warned '13 Reasons Why' could lead to suicides. A new study suggests they were right. When the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why debuted in 2017, suicide prevention experts worried that the show's graphic depiction of suicide might make some vulnerable viewers more prone to increased suicidal thinking and behavior. A new study of the suicide rate following the show's debut suggests those concerns were more than justified. Researchers found that, among adolescents and teens, 195 additional suicides occurred in the nine months after Netflix released the first season of 13 Reasons Why. While the study, which was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, couldn't establish a causal link between the show and the increase, the researchers used approaches that helped them account for various factors that could affect the suicide rate. That included forecasting models to estimate suicide trends, controlling for seasonal variations in the suicide rate, and comparing the suicide and homicide rates, the latter of which is also influenced by social and environmental events. The study's analysis looked at the existing and anticipated trends for the suicide rate and found an unexpected spike after the show launched. The finding was limited to only 10- to 17-year-olds; there was no significant association for those 18 and older. A separate study published in 2017 found an association between 13 Reasons Why and a spike in internet searches about suicide and suicide methods. SEE ALSO: 'Am I depressed?': How teens can find mental health help onlineCritics who've questioned Netflix's decision to show the protagonist's suicide in detail point to research indicating that such portrayals can have a "contagion effect," leading to a temporary rise in the suicide rate. Published guidelines for the media are meant to help reduce this possibility by, in part, avoiding sensationalism. "I think that any media depiction of suicide should follow the recommended guidelines," said Jeff Bridge, the study's lead author and director of the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "The reason for that is to avoid any harm and, in particular, subsequent suicides."Netflix has occasionally resisted criticism of its creative decisions, with some of the show's staff and supporters arguing -- without scientific evidence -- that a gory depiction can raise awareness and act as a deterrent. In the wake of the controversy, one of the show's writers defended the portrayal in a column for Vanity Fair about how his own experience with suicide, and having seen the outcome of a failed attempt firsthand, convinced him not to take his own life. > When @netflix chose to release and promote a show about a teen who committed suicide, experts warned that it could to cause an increase in suicides especially among adolescents. Now, research finds that's exactly what happened. https://t.co/2HqDWqAxO8 pic.twitter.com/me1QMTDxSt> > -- zeynep tufekci (@zeynep) April 30, 2019In general, it took considerable outcry from experts, advocates, and viewers to persuade Netflix to include detailed content warnings at the beginning of each episode. For the second season of 13 Reasons Why, Netflix offered additional resources to help guide conversations about the show's difficult themes. The third season is currently in production. "This is a critically important topic and we have worked hard to ensure that we handle this sensitive issue responsibly," a spokesperson for Netflix told the New York Times. The streaming service is looking into the new study. In addition to the increased suicide rate amongst adolescents and teens, the study also found that boys were most affected. That may seem counter-intuitive given that the show's protagonist is a teenage girl, but suicide attempts made by boys and men are more frequently fatal than those made by girls and women. Though females are more likely to try to take their own lives, researchers did not have data on suicide attempt rates amongst girls during the study's time period. Bridge said future research could look into those patterns, in addition to better understanding the effect of binge-watching content like 13 Reasons Why on the developing adolescent and teenage brain. It's possible that older viewers weren't similarly affected by the show's depiction of suicide because they possess more mature reasoning or coping skills. Nicole Mavrides, medical director of the child psychiatry consultation service at the University of Miami Health System, said that while the new study should be taken with a "grain of salt" because it can't prove a causal connection between the show and higher suicide rate, it does provide clinicians like her with useful information. She and her colleagues actually noticed a spike in the number of adolescents and teens admitted to their department for suicidal behavior following the show's first season; they wondered at the time if the two events were related. Mavrides, who was not involved in the study, recommends that parents discuss 13 Reasons Why's themes with a child who's watched the show, and urges worried adults to ask kids and teens about whether they've had thoughts about suicide. Mavrides said the study is an important reminder for clinicians to also talk to parents and patients about the media they're consuming, particularly if that includes 13 Reasons Why. "This evidence does show us we need to be more cautious about what our kids and teenagers are watching," she said. If you want to talk to someone or are experiencing suicidal thoughts, text the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Will the Culture War Kill the NRA?

Posted: 01 May 2019 03:30 AM PDT

Will the Culture War Kill the NRA?The National Rifle Association has big troubles. It's wildly in debt. The attorney general of New York — where the NRA was founded in 1871 and where it remains incorporated — is investigating the tax-exempt status of what she has called a "terrorist organization." The NRA's longtime chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, is in a bitter feud with its outgoing president, Oliver North. Accusations are flying, including of attempted extortion and misuse of perhaps millions of dollars. On the surface, the NRA's problems have little to do with the typical criticisms hurled at it by its biggest detractors. To them, the villainous NRA is too rich, too powerful, and too well-run, not an outfit drowning in red ink and dysfunction. But it turns out that its real problems, in part, may stem from its outsized ambitions. For most of its history, the NRA was a sporting club dedicated to teaching gun safety and promoting hunting and marksmanship as a pastime. It was founded by two Union Army officers who had noticed that the Confederates tended to be better shots. In the 1930s, it started to dip its toes into lobbying, but in favor of limited gun control. The NRA, for instance, supported the Federal Firearms Act of 1938, which established federal gun licensing requirements. It wasn't until the mid-1970s, after passage of the federal Gun Control Act, that new leadership at the NRA made lobbying for gun rights central to its mission.Still, that mission was notably bipartisan. Working from the common-sense assumption that gun rights would be better protected if support came from both parties, the NRA once supported candidates on either side of the aisle. In the 2000 campaign cycle, it spent $372,000 on some 66 Democratic incumbents. But by 2016, it contributed to just four. What happened? The easy answer is that as the GOP increasingly embraced gun rights, the Democrats embraced gun control — or the other way around. Which side is guilty of policy extremism depends on your views on gun policy. Asking which side is guilty of rhetorical extremism is pointless, because both are. The NRA is not a "terrorist organization," but neither are its opponents a horde of anarchists, socialists, and goons, as the NRA's media arm often portrays them. The GOP-NRA alliance came downstream from two larger social shifts. The first is the "Big Sort" — shorthand for how American society has self-organized not just into "red" and "blue" regions, but also worldviews. The end of the NRA's bipartisan lobbying strategy simply reflected the facts on the ground. In 1989, 64 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the NRA, and so did 49 percent of Democrats. Today, those numbers are 88 percent and 24 percent, respectively. The second reason is that the parties are weaker than they have ever been. The common assertion that Republican politicians are pro-gun because they've been bought off with NRA blood money is mostly a paranoid conspiracy theory. The NRA doesn't actually give very much money to politicians, at least compared with, say, organized labor or trial lawyers. What the NRA does do — incredibly effectively — is organize and inform voters, mobilizing them to vote reliably for philosophically aligned candidates. Historically, that was a function of political parties, but now it's been largely outsourced to special-interest groups such as the NRA but also Planned Parenthood for the Democrats. These groups are motivated to get out the vote, but they're also incentivized to monetize the voters. The net effect has been for these interest groups to go all in for the culture war — which is highly effective for fundraising — and take our elections with them.NRA folks today inveigh against "the socialists" with the same vehemence they used to reserve for gun-grabbers. UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, author of Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America, observes that NRATV, the online media outlet of the NRA, has strayed far from the gun lane. "Now it's focused on immigration, race, health care," he told The New Republic. Dana Loesch, an NRA spokeswoman, has called the mainstream news media "the rat bastards of the earth" who deserve to be "curb-stomped."We've come a long way since William F. Buckley came out in favor of the Brady Bill.Political parties once had the desire and resources to manage their own brands — keeping activists and interests at a more healthy distance. Those days are gone. Parties — and the institutions that really run them — are simply uniforms for combatants in the culture war. In such a climate, it's no surprise that things such as good corporate governance became an afterthought at the NRA.© 2019 TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY LLC
