EU's Tusk warns of risks in rise of U.S. tech giants Posted: 03 May 2019 09:07 AM PDT The world needs to be wary of the rise of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, comparing their powers to those of countries such as China, European Council President Donald Tusk said in Warsaw on Friday. "In the East, we see the rise of those capable of controlling everyone's behavior, and in the West we've seen the rise of an uncontrolled, spontaneous empire," Tusk said in Warsaw in reference to the companies during a speech marking Constitution Day. The European Union has been in the forefront of efforts to tighten control on how social media companies handle the personal data of consumers, with rules introduced last May giving regulators the power to impose fines of up to 4 percent of global revenue for violations.

White House Blasts Mueller Report to Barr: It’s Just a ‘Law School Exam Paper’ Posted: 02 May 2019 12:04 PM PDT REUTERSIn a letter to Attorney General William Barr, White House Counsel Emmet Flood blasted Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report about his probe into Russian collusion and potential obstruction of justice committed by President Donald Trump—calling it "part 'truth commission' report and part law school exam paper."Flood claimed the report "suffers from an extraordinary legal defect," failing to "comply with the requirements of governing law." The White House lawyer took issue with Mueller's conclusion that the evidence his team gathered did not "exonerate" the president."Prosecutors simply are not in the business of establishing innocence, any more than they are in the business of 'exonerating' investigated persons," he wrote. "Because they do not belong to our criminal justice vocabulary, the SCO's inverted-proof-standard and 'exoneration' statement can be understood only as political statements."By making political statements, Flood said Mueller and his team "failed in their duty to act as prosecutors and only as prosecutors." He accused the special counsel's team of not acting independently and insisted the report was "laden with factual information that has never been subjected to adversarial testing or independent analysis."Flood also addressed speculation that the report was intended to be a "road map" for Congress to start impeachment hearings. If that was true, he wrote to Barr that it was further evidence of Mueller's "refusal to follow applicable law."Mueller did not find that Trump or anyone on his campaign colluded with Russians to interfere in the 2016 election, though the report did state that Russians were successful in interfering in a "sweeping and systematic fashion." However, the report asserted that Mueller's team was not able to "conclusively" determine whether or not Trump obstructed justice—adding that the evidence they gathered does "not conclude that the President committed a crime [but] does not exonerate him."Upon receiving the report from Mueller, Barr came to his own conclusions about the obstruction of justice issue alongside outgoing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—with both of them concluding that the 10 instances of potential obstruction outlined in the report were not enough to bring charges against the president.Barr's conclusions about the report were subject to intense scrutiny when he testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) questioning whether or not Barr took a look at the underlying evidence of the report before making the charging decision. Other senators also took aim at Barr's decision to release his own "summaries" of the report rather than releasing Mueller's own executive summaries, calling his decision an attempt at spinning the report before its full release to the public.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? The U.S. Air Force Destroyed North Korea (And It Terrifies Kim Jong Un) Posted: 03 May 2019 07:30 PM PDT Can the United States and North Korea arrive at a deal—any deal—on denuclearization, normalization of relations, or at the very least a nuclear freeze? Given the holding pattern in nuclear diplomacy since the second summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in Hanoi, the prospects don't appear particularly bright. The hold-up in the talks, however, is not simply the product of personality clashes, maximalist negotiating positions, and incongruent objectives between Washington and Pyongyang. History also has a lot to do with it.While the Korean War may have ended in an armistice sixty-six years ago this July, memories from that extremely bloody conflict are never far from the minds of North Koreans. While the three-year-war for control of the Korean Peninsula doesn't get sufficient attention in the United States, it is literally the seminal moment in North Korea's young history as a state. It was a merciless campaign on all sides, with tens of thousands of Americans, hundreds of thousands of Chinese, and millions of Koreans killed in three short years of stalemated fighting. Americans have since regarded the war as a noble attempt to save South Korea from being usurped by communism. The Kim regime's interpretation, drilled into the minds of the North Korean population, is far more sinister: a violent, criminal attempt by an imperialist American aggressor that sought to turn the Korean Peninsula into a colony.

North Korea fires 'projectiles', South Korea says stop raising tensions Posted: 04 May 2019 08:27 AM PDT The South Korean military initially described it as a missile launch, but subsequently gave a more vague description. The latest firing came after the North's test of what it called a tactical guided weapons system in April. Analysts suspected the flurry of military activity by Pyongyang was an attempt to exert pressure on the United States to give ground in negotiations to end the North's nuclear program after a summit in February ended in failure.

Caribbean nation of St. Lucia quarantines cruise ship over measles case Posted: 02 May 2019 12:42 PM PDT Dr. Merlene Frederick-James said in a video statement posted to YouTube on Tuesday that the St. Lucia Ministry of Health ordered the restriction after conferring with the Pan American Health Organization and others about the risk of exposure to islanders. The ministry learned of the confirmed measles case from "two reputable sources," and in light of current measles outbreaks in the United States and the highly infectious nature of the disease "we thought it prudent that we quarantine the ship," Frederick-James said. Verizon’s new BOGO deal covers iPhones, Pixels, and Samsung phones Posted: 03 May 2019 02:56 PM PDT Verizon is back at it with another of its BOGO (buy one get one) devices offers, this time coinciding with Mother's Day which is right around the corner. The limited-time deals are live now, and they include the usual pretty solid offers on some of the hottest smartphones by making them available for free or at a discount when you purchase another phone at full-price. The BOGO this time includes the opportunity to score $1,100 in bill credits when you buy two new Pixel 3s and you also add a new unlimited line. You'll save $300, no trade-in required, when you buy a new Pixel 3, then you'll get another $800 via bill credits when you buy another either Pixel 3 or 3XL, along with the unlimited line.As we always note with these BOGOs from Verizon, there are important caveats. For this particularly offer, both of the new Pixels would need to be paid for on a monthly installment plan. Within two months, the $1,100 would then begin to be applied to your bill, spread over 24 months. It's definitely a good deal if you're already a Verizon customer and thinking about a new line and device. The same goes for anyone thinking about becoming a Verizon customer. The full rundown of deals and the relevant details can be found on Verizon's site here, and among the other offers as part of this BOGO, you can: * Buy one Samsung Galaxy S10+ and get $750 off a Galaxy 10, 10+, 10e or Note 9. * Buy one Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and get $750 off a Galaxy 10, 10+, 10e or Note 9. * Finally, if you buy an iPhone XR, iPhone XS MAX, iPhone XS, or iPhone X you can get a free iPhone XR (or take $750 off a second iPhone X model).Verizon hasn't specified an end-date for this particular BOGO, but since it's tied to Mother's Day you've got at least all of next week, through Sunday May 12, to take advantage of it.

In Christchurch, I wrote about Ibrahim Abdelhalim.
